‘Cinderella’ gets to take her prince to a ball Kayla Brand, a learner at Tygerberg High School who lives in a safe house with her mother and her younger brother, is one of the few matriculants who can say that they have had the privilege of attending a ball with prince charming. Kayla (17) was fortunate to be escorted to her matric ball last week by Mr South Africa 2019, Heinrich Gabler, all thanks to the kindness and generosity of the Mr South Africa organisation. The organisation says it was approached by Coastal Radio SA to help make her fairy tale dream come true. The radio station also had help from a few sponsors. “Kayla gets up at 04:30 in the morning to get ready to be on time for school as her studies and education has always come first in her life. She would brave the cold mornings and take a taxi to the Parow train station, and from there walk the rest of the way to her school,” Amanda Trollip says on behalf of the radio station. Heinrich even bought her some flowers as a real gentleman should, the Mr SA organisation says. PHOTO: DIONNE JORDAAN PHOTOGRAPHY
EDGEMEAD: IPHONES TARGETED
‘Apple picking’ on the rise RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj
R
esidents in Bothasig and Edgemead are warned not to make use of their cellphones while walking or driving as criminals often target such individuals. A new crime trend, known as “apple picking”, is said to be on the rise in the area. “Apple picking” according to the Bothasig neighbourhood watch, is slang for Apple iPhones stolen during a robbery. In a recent Facebook post, the neighbourhood watch warned residents about this new and latest crime trend. “A vehicle pulls-up, someone then gets out
on the passenger side and snatches your cellphone,” a short description reads. The perpetrators then drive off. According to the post, the crime takes less than 15 seconds to commit. This type of theft is common and happens every day all around Cape Town, the post reads. Furthermore, it explains that everyone not taking note of their surroundings end up being a target. These include school children and runners using their earphones. WO, Jacques Mostert, Bothasig police spokesperson, last week confirmed that there had indeed been a few such incidents which have occurred in the area.
“Cases have been reported where pedestrians had been targeted while on foot. “Incidents occurred in Bothasig and Edgemead. One incident occurred outside a school in Edgemead where a motorist had been waiting while using his cellphone. According to Mostert, it seems as if a white minibus-taxi with a yellow stripe had been involved. The police would like to advise pedestrians to not make use of cellphones while walking, as it distracts pedestrians from what is happening around them. The same warning is echoed when it comes to driving. To avoid becoming a victim, the neighbourhood watch also recommends that mo-
torists and pedestrians be more mindful of where they use their cellphones; that they become more aware of their surroundings and if possible for pedestrians to walk only where it is safe to do so – preferably on the side of the road facing oncoming traffic. This gives you the advantage of seeing suspicious vehicles before it reaches you, the neighbourhood watch says. According to the latest national crime statistics, Bothasig policing precinct, have seen a decrease of 26,9% in cases of common robbery. Between 2017 and 2018 a total of 26 such cases were reported to the police, while between 2018 and 2019 only 19 cases were reported – a difference of seven cases in total.
