DURBANVILLE: CITY INVESTIGATES CLAIMS
Historic bluegum trees poisoned ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme
T
he City of Cape Town is investigating the possible poisoning of nine bluegum (Eucalyptus) trees in the historic avenue of bluegum trees in Race Course Road in Durbanville. Shock was expressed after the discovery that the trees are dying after being poisoned, assumingly on purpose. The trees are dead or dying and grass and weeds around the trees are dead – compared to the green grass and weeds around the other trees. A piece of the wheat field behind the dead bluegum trees north of Race Course Road is also dead. A criminal charge will also be laid, said Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community services and health of the City of Cape Town. This historic avenue of trees dates back more than 150 years old and demarcates the old wagon route between Cape Town, Wagenmakersvallei (Wellington), Roodezand (Tulbagh) and other areas. It is one of few left and resembles the old Durbanville Lane bluegum trees from Durbanville to Bellville station (today Durban
Road), which was destroyed for development. Badroodien said officials from the City’s recreation and parks department conducted an on-site inspection two weeks ago. “They have concluded that there is a strong possibility of the poisoning of nine historical bluegum trees along Race Course Road. “The inspection showed various methods of possible poison applications. This include soil application in little dams around three tree basins; holes drilled into trees and poison injected, as well as possible full cover spray. “The matter has been referred to the City’s scientific services for investigation and analysis,” she said. On a question by TygerBurger whether the City is planning to do an analysis of the soil to establish which poison was used, Badroodien said the City is currently investigating the matter and the legal course will depend on the outcome of the investigation. The City’s recreation and parks department requested any person with information to contact the City arborist at arborist@capetown.gov.za. V To page 2.
