M
eeste winkeleienaars by The Village Square-winkelsentrum in Durbanville het verlede week ’n petisie vir verskerpte sekerheid geteken na nóg ’n voorval van misdaad die afgelope maande. Ses diewe het op Dinsdag 30 Julie omstreeks 03:00 by Dolce Bella Boutique toegeslaan. Die diewe het binne twee en half minute bykans ’n halfmil-
joen rand se goed gesteel. Hoewel die boetiek in ’n aanliggende gebou geleë is, maak dit op die sentrum se parkeergebied oop. Dit is na verneem word die vierde misdaadvoorval by dié spogwinkelsentrum in Oxfordstraat, Durbanville, wat einde November verlede jaar geopen is. Rowers het in Maart vanjaar helder oordag by Computer Mania toegeslaan terwyl daar klante in die winkel was, onder meer ’n 13-jarige seun.
Een van die rowers het buite in ’n wit VW Polo gesit en wag, terwyl die ander drie die winkel in is. Hulle het 15 skootrekenaars uit die stoorkamer geroof. Die waarde van die verlore items is op R100 000 geskat. Inbrake by ander winkels is ook aangemeld. In die jongste voorval kan daar op sekerheidskameras gesien word hoe die diewe in ’n blou VW Polo reg voor die boetiek stilgehou en die voordeur oopforseer het. V Na bladsy 2.

He, or she, could be the older, active neighbourhood watch patroller walking the streets at 04:00, feeding the children in their street, driving the sick to the clinic, knitting beanies and blankets for unwanted babies or giving free boxing lessons to keep the youth off the streets, all out of their own pockets. Tell us what wonderful deeds they’ve done for their community.
Nominations close on Tuesday 27 August Elders making a difference can once again be nominated in one of two categories: “70-80 years” or “80 plus”. Six finalists will be selected and notified by Tuesday 3 September. All their wonderful deeds will be featured in the newspaper in the weeks following, whereafter our readers can vote for the People’s Choice winner. The winners in both categories, as well as the People’s Choice winner, will be announced at a morning tea in Cape Town on Saturday 12 October.
