n an empowering graduation ceremony held on Thursday 15 August, Eersteriver’s Community Women Action – partnered with University of Western Cape’s Collaborative Laboratory (CoLab) – conferred 185 certificates in total to well-deserving graduates of all ages.
Joan Mouton, who founded the organisation as a nursing professional, sought to assist women and children against the violence and abuse which continue to plague the community. “We are bringing the university to the people,” said Mouton. According to Mouton, 80% of the graduates were young women, and 20% men. “The graduation was for the computer
skills graduates, digital identity management and mobile technology for small medium enterprise graduates,” Mouton said. “Most of the graduates come from ward 16, ward 17, ward 114 and ward 14. Students who came from Wesbank area (ward 19) were also included.” Mouton explained to TygerBurger the relationship between the action group and the university.
“The Colab at UWC – which Stands for Collaborative Laboratory – was created to roll out the digital literacy programmes in the community,” she said. “They research, design and implement digital literacy programmes that suit the community’s needs from basic computer skills to introduction to programming and digital economy for township entrepreneurs.” V To page 2.
