An awareness event to mark World Aids Day was held at Courage to Care Wellness Centre just off Nooiensfontein Road on Tuesday 1 December. The centre has a team of nurses and care workers who also assist patients who are HIV positive within the community. Andrea Titus, registered nurse in charge, says staff members started off displaying placards along Nooiensfontein Road about HIV/Aids, but also incorporated Covid-19 and violence against women and children as relevant themes. Titus says it’s very important for them as
health care workers to salute people who are HIV positive and are adhering to taking their medication. “There are many who still hide and who haven’t disclosed their status. I want to salute those who came forward and spent time with us. We encourage them to continue to take their medication.” Titus oversees an “ARV club” ran from their offices every Wednesday. She explains these are clubs for patients decanted from hospital that are established within communities to ensure easy access to antiretroviral (ARV) medication. “They can come to a club closer to home, so there is no reason not to take their medication.”

Four alleged extortionists arrested

D
Extortion is a serious crime and the Mfuleni police is urging the community to lay complaints against people extorting them. This warning follows the arrest of four alleged gang members after an extortion case was registered on Monday, 30 November by a complainant from Wesbank after the suspects threatened him and his family. “They demanded a substantial amount of money from the complainant, who then made the payment. Police investigators and members attached to the station gang unit made a
breakthrough in the case and arrested four of the alleged gang members. The male suspects aged 21, 31, 34 and 44 from Wesbank area will appear in the Blue Downs Magistrates Court on extortion charges,” says Filander. According to Filander information campaigns helped the community to realise their responsibility. “Through proper pamphlet distribution and informative efforts by the police and their community policing partners in the Mfuleni policing precinct, people have come to learn the seriousness and negative im-
pact extortion has on communities. It has become clearer by the day through a number of media reports how businesses and residents are experiencing extortion from gangsters,” says Filander. The station commander of the Mfuleni police, Brig Fana Dlamini, applauded the officers for their commitment in bringing the suspects to book and urges the public to come forward in reporting similar extortion cases. They can report these crimes anonymously by phoning the Extortion Hotline on 021 466 0011 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
Arrests made by Mfuleni police The Mfuleni police last week made a series of arrests for various crimes in the policing precinct. According to WO November Filander, police spokesperson, on Sunday (29 November) around 10:00 officers received information from an anonymous caller about drugs being sold at a house in Sir Bedivere Street, Camelot. “The officers obtained a search warrant for the address, and during their search they found cocaine and other drugs and arrested a 23-year-old male. “While the officers were still busy searching the house, the suspect received a suspicious phone call from someone who was on his way to him. The officers immediately executed a plan of action to hide themselves and their vehicles. The
moment the four male suspects arrived to buy drugs they were cornered and the black Chrysler they were driving was searched. In the vehicle a prohibited firearm was found and it was also established that the vehicle was hijacked earlier this year in the Mfuleni area,” says Filander. The 23-year-old male suspect was arrested for possession of drugs, while the other four suspects aged between 26 and 37 years, were arrested for possession of a hijacked vehicle and a prohibited firearm. All the suspects appeared in the Blue Downs magistrate’s court. In an unrelated incident on the same day at around 23:25 in Ou Plaas Street, Wesbank, officers on patrol noticed a person throwing an object into a yard.
“When the officers got hold of the suspect, they went back to the spot where he threw the object and recovered a prohibited firearm and ammunition. The 27-year-old male suspect was arrested and appeared in the Blue Downs magistrate’s court. “The officers also confiscated a large quantity of liquor and arrested two people in separate incidents during alcohol crackdown operations in Fairdale and Mfuleni for dealing in liquor without a valid license. They both appeared in the Blue Downs magistrate’s court,” says Filander. The station commander of the Mfuleni police, Brig Fana Dlamini, applauded the officers for their vigilance and hard work in serving and protecting the community.

First men-only health centre opens A
brand new health centre exclusively aimed at serving men, has recently opened its doors in Cape Town. The Metro Men’s Health Centre was officially opened on Monday 30 November at the Karl Bremer Hospital. The facility, the first of its kind in Cape Town, aims to empower boys and men to lead healthy lives and will be a one-stop shop for wellness and chronic conditions screenings, HIV prevention interventions, treating sexually transmitted diseases, and offering medical male circumcision, the Western Cape health department says. Dr Saadiq Kariem, chief of operations at the department, has encouraged men to put their health first, emphasising the importance of men’s health and its impact on society. “I really want to appeal to all men to prioritise their health. I encourage all men to make use of this facility. It is open to all men, as well as young men. You are all welcome to make use of this facility,” says Kariem. Boys who are aged 15 to 18 years can also access the facility, but they will need a
guardian to accompany them. Juanita Arendse, northern Tygerberg health services director, has welcomed families and men from around the city to make use of the men’s health centre based in Bellville. “This project was birthed in the northern Tygerberg sub-structure, but we recognise the broader need and will be serving men from anywhere in the metro, that is why we have named it the Metro Men’s Health Centre,” Arendse says. Some of the services offered at no cost include health education and promotion; wellness screening; chronic disease screening; voluntary medical male circumcision and aftercare treatment; HIV counselling and testing; condom education and distribution, as well as STI treatment and education. V The health centre is open Monday to Friday from 07:00 until 16:00. Call or send a please call me to 079 530 2593 or use WhatsApp or SMS by sending the word “HI” between 08:00 and 15:30 from Monday to Friday. A healthcare worker will return your call to book your appointment.

Fair Cape raises funds for social welfare projects Much-needed funds for its social welfare projects were raised with the annual golf day of Fair Cape Cares Foundation. The golf day held on Friday 20 November at the Durbanville Golf Club is a highlight on the social calendar for all involved. Ongoing beneficiaries of the foundation include Durbanville Children’s Home, the Atlantic Hope Sanctuary for Abandoned Babies, and the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children. This year, to help counter the economic devastation brought on by the Covid-19 lockdown, the foundation has also partnered with Cape Talk twice to donate a total of R600 000 worth of dairy products to feeding schemes in the Cape
Town area. Joel Serman, a trustee of Fair Cape Cares Foundation, says “doing the right thing” is a fundamental driving force of Fair Cape Dairies with social welfare being one of its brand pillars. “The foundation was established to raise and disburse funds to ensure the future sustainability of its beneficiary organisations. “It is extremely rewarding to play a role to add social value to these communities and the various fundraising events that we host every year are what make our welfare projects possible. “We sincerely thank all participants for their contributions toward these causes,” Serman says.
New furniture DC for Brackenfell DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke Trusted furniture store Tafelberg Furnishers has just turned the sod at a new construction site in Brackenfell Industrial where its brandnew distribution centre and warehouse is being constructed. The R190 million project in partnership with VDMV Property Group will provide 225 employment opportunities and service customers in the Cape Peninsula and Boland districts. The bulk of the earthworks is currently underway with completion of construction and civil works anticipated for October
2021. “We are very excited about this project, and trust that we shall be able to serve our customers even better when it comes to deliveries, distribution and turn-around time in all areas of the Cape Peninsula and Boland,” says Tafelberg Furnisher’s CEO, Riaan Lamprecht. Phillips and Associates Architects in Paarl were contracted to design this centre. “They designed a practical, aesthetically pleasing structure with a dome shaped roof. The architecture comprises an equilibrium of concrete, steel and traditional construction methods. The facades are a combination of brickwork and IBR sheeting,” says Lamprecht. According to the
plans, the warehouse and offices will amount to 11 500m² with a state-of-the-art fire protection system and LED lighting in the building. “This all makes a far more efficient and effective warehousing and distribution system. We really endeavour to have this centre be of world-class standard, once it opens its doors in February 2022, and trust that our customers, as well as our warehousing staff members will experience it as such.” With a 57-year track record in the Western Cape Tafelberg Furnishers is a leading furniture and appliance retailer, and now also has a branch in Roodepoort, Gauteng and in Umhlanga, KZN.

Residents irate over illegal racing problem BRENDEN RUITER @ruitervaniewind
T
he same thing over and over again, but it doesn’t solve the problem. This was the opinion of Kenny Marcus, a resident from Malibu Village, after the City of Cape Town’s transport’s directorate answered to complaints. Marcus represents the residents of Malibu in their extended fight to have traffic calming measures put in place as youngsters are using the streets for illegal racing. TygerBurger is in possession of an e-mail that was sent in 2019 in
which the City promises that an investigation into calming measures will take 90 days to complete. More than a year later TygerBurger, after questioning this, got almost exactly the same answer from Natasha Davids, communication officer at the transport information centre: “Thank you for forwarding your request to the Transport Information Centre regarding speed humps. Your reference number is 7200289488. Due to the volume of requests received, our turnaround times for investigation and response typically range between 90 and 110 days,” read the response before referring this journalist to
the “revised Traffic Calming Policy” on the City’s website. Marcus says the frustrating thing is that they cannot get through to someone with knowledge of the investigation being done. “What does the investigation entail? We would think they would talk to the affected parties, but nothing. I think this is just a stalling tactic from people who do not realise their responsibility to keep the community safe,” says Marcus.

Spesialis sê virus is nie moeg nie CARINA ROUX
Dr Emille Reid (voor) ondersteun nog steeds die inisiatief “Frontline Fridays”, waarin The Daily Coffee Shop koffie en ’n koekie aan gesondheidswerkers verskaf as blyk van waardering.
A

Sommige pasiënte was reeds sterwend.
Youth Music Festival free online A
rtscape and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO), with the support of the City of Cape Town, have ensured the 49th Western Cape Youth Music Festival will be celebrated this year. This annual event is a highlight of the classical music calendar and gives young, exceptionally talented instrumentalists and singers the opportunity of performing with an orchestra on a professional stage. As it was not possible to have live auditions, musicians were invited to submit online videos of the work they would play at the concert. The criteria were that they are bona fide music students, performed at a very high standard, and were resident or studying music in the Western Cape. Nine extraordinarily talented musicians were selected to perform with the CPO, conducted by
Brandon Phillips. The concert is approximately 80 minutes long and has been recorded for Artscape’s YouTube channel and Fine Music Radio (FMR). In preparation for the recording, the soloists received individual, comprehensive sessions with Brandon Phillips and the orchestra. Included in the programme are the following works: Mozart Piano Concerto, Weber Bassoon, Albinoni Oboe, Poulenc Piano, Bruch double concerto, Rachmaninoff Piano, Saint-Saens Cello and Brahms Piano. The soloists are Cameron Williams (23) from Stellenbosch on clarinet who will perform a duet with Stephane Lawrenson (23) from Rondebosch on viola, Nicola McLachlan (21) from Rondebosch on cello, Eléna Monvoisin (10) from Loevenstein is the youngest, plays the oboe and Liam Slabbert (18) from Durbanville, bassoon.
There are four pianists. Daniel Brodie (20) from Stellenbosch, Jacqueline Choi (18) from Durbanville, Rosemarie Lemmer (22) from Stellenbosch and Ying-Shan Tseng (18) from Worcester who is blind will perform a piano concerto with the orchestra. The adjudicating panel viewed the audition video recordings, projected on a large screen, giving each applicant the same opportunity to present their work. Louis Heyneman, head of the CPO, says the Youth Music Festival has been one of the most important launching pads for many young musicians and an integral part of its mandate to be an orchestra for all, serving all facets of the community. FMR will broadcast the concert on Sunday 13 December between 15:00 and 17:00 and Artscape YouTube streaming is online from 13 December. Access is free.
Eléna Monvoisin (10) from Loevenstein on oboe is the youngest performer at the youth music festival.
Liam Slabbert (18) from Durbanville on bassoon.

Television actress Chantal Stanfield and director Megan Furniss once again team up to bring sequel uniquely South African comedy, From Koe’siestes To Kneidlach – With Kids! to the Baxter Golden Arrow Studio from Tuesday 22 December to 9 January at 20:15. Written and performed by Stanfield (Getroud met rugby, Binnelanders) with music compiled by RJ Benjamin and produced by Kizara Kreative, this kosher comedy follows the bizarre, funny and true story of what happens when a girl from the Cape Flats falls in love with a Jewish boy from Joburg’s East Rand. She finds herself in the middle of a culture, heritage and traditions, vastly different from her own, while she shares and celebrates her very colourful background too. From Koe’siestes To Kneidlach – With Kids! picks up a few years after the mixedrace-mixed-everything happy couple get married and ride off into the shabbat sunset. Now there’s a “beige” baby on the way
with a myriad of cultural, religious and familial issues to navigate – from the minefield of beautiful names and their unfortunate companion nicknames from the Flats; a proud “bossiekop” dealing with her child’s “gladde hare” (straight hair); celebrating Christmas and Hannukah while explaining barakat to the Jewish in-laws – to how to avoid getting mistaken for the nanny. Along the way audiences will meet interesting characters like the omnipresent voice of her mother, her gay best friend and nosy neighbours and several others. The original production From Koe’siestes To Kneidlach had a four-week season at The Baxter in 2017. All performances will be limited to fifty percent capacity, with Covid-19 protocols in place. Arrive at least an hour before the start to avoid delays. No performances on 24, 25 December and 1 January. V Ticket prices range from R80 to R150 with discounted block bookings and student and pensioner prices at R110. Book at Webtickets on 086 111 0005, www.webtickets.co.za or at Pick n Pay stores.

KRAAIFONTEIN: BASE OPENED
New home for drummies EARL HAUPT @earlhaupt
W
ith almost all of 2020 being blighted by the Covid-19 pandemic, group activities have found it more challenging to stay active, let alone resume activity. However, a group of mothers in and around the northern suburbs are determined not to only keep the sport of drum majorettes alive, but to continue its growth throughout the area. Following its formation in 2018, the Durbanville Majorettes Club (DMC) had the vision to take this sport into the local communities, with athletes being sourced from Aristea Primary School, Fanie Theron Primary, Delft Primary, Gene Louw, Curro Durbanville and Curro Pinehurst. “We aimed to run a low fee, no fee club. We were given access to practise grounds at Curro Durbanville and as they had previously done the sport, they allowed us to use all their equipment and uniforms. We approached all the schools in the northern suburbs,” says chair Yvonne Viljoen. Viljoen recalls their first competitive year last year where they placed first in the provincial championships which garnered an invitation to the national championships in Oudtshoorn, placing nineth out of the 18 teams who participated, a remarkable feat, considering the club relies heavily on its corporate sponsors and parents. The upward trend laid the foundation for a promising 2020, however, the global Covid-19 pandemic quickly halted further progress. However, this did not prevent the club from unveiling its new home at Aristea Primary School in Kraaifontein. “I started drummies in my early days in primary school already. It is a sisterhood. We are a family. There was so much I gained from
Durbanville Majorette Club in full regalia during competition. The club was established in 2018.
the sport. It entrenched such valuable life skills that I still use today. The importance of teamwork, you are only as good as your team member, navigate around your team members, be cognisant of their needs and emotions as you are all one team. “I gained independence. It taught me discipline, time management, to stay focused, to dream big,” adds Viljoen. With drummies traditionally being an all-girls sport, Viljoen believes it is a form of empowerment for young ladies.
“I had always dreamt that one day my daughters would benefit from the sport and this is one of the reasons I started the club. Every one of the DMC girls is like a daughter to me,” she adds, saying that there has always been a misconception drummies is a rich girls’ sport. “My vision was to take this sport back to its grassroots. Make it available to all and any young girl in the vicinity who had a desire to be a part of the DMC sisterhood. With a no-fee/low fee strategy, and transport to and from practices
and our weekend feeding scheme we were able to make this accessible to all girls,” she explains. With drummies allowing anywhere between four and 50 people being able to participate and compete at the same time, DMC have now also broadened their scope by joining a new federation, the Federation of Dance Drill Cheerleading and Majorettes South Africa (FDDCMSA), which also allows transgender and young men to participate. “We practise up to three to four days a week. The girls have to be
110% committed. They have to juggle their academic and drummies and mainstream sporting, we hope to enrich and empower our young girls with these skills to take forth with them into their lives. And most importantly we hope to create a sense of community for each majorette and their family,” says Viljoen. She laments that while demographically, the majority of the athletes participating in majorettes are girls from previously disadvantaged areas, this is not being reflected in the sport’s representation.
Skolekrieket begin vroeg
Nine-hour race yields success: The South African nine-hour race was held at Killarney on Saturday 5 December. The start, with 51 cars entered, was always going to be a frantic affair, but amazingly there were no coming togethers into the first corner and all made it safely into the early part of the race.
