BONTEHEUWEL: ‘MORE FEET ON THE GROUND’

New safety team for a safer area TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07

ishop Lavis police say the efforts of the Bonteheuwel Neighbourhood Safety Team (NST) is paying off as there are more feet on the ground. The NST was deployed to Bonteheuwel at the beginning of July. Since the deployment, the NST has made 49 arrests. Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith shared the following statistics of the teams first month: . 49 arrests (for possession of drugs, illegal firearms and ammunition and possession of suspected stolen property); . two illegal firearms and five rounds of ammunition recovered; . 391 units of drugs impounded; . R4 605 in cash confiscated; . recovered 43 kilograms of stolen cable; . 280 fines (traffic and by-law infringements) issued; . 50 joint, integrated and autonomous operations held; and . 3 374 persons searched. Bishop Lavis police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi says there was a “noticeable decline” in the amount of murders. “This is due to the NST contributing as they are on the ground. The presence of the army has also made a change as they seek to protect the outer perimeters.” Swartbooi explains what happens when the NST has a successful arrest: “The NST makes their own arrests in their area of jurisdiction, after which they then will transport the suspects to Bishop Lavis police cells where suspects are being detained and then

ultimately being prepared for court procedure. The presence of the NST is appreciated as they assist Bishop Lavis police with planned operations in the crime hotspots.” Provincial minister of community safety Albert Fritz has commended the varied successes of the 100 NST officers. “The department will further be assisting the City in its crime fighting initiatives by transferring R4.2m towards school resource officers (SROs) and the creation of safe zones during this financial year. Among these safe zones is Bonteheuwel Secondary School. Additionally, R4.4m will be transferred in the 2020/2021 financial year and R4.6m in 2021/2022.” Fritz further adds, “Initiatives such as these are essential in combatting crime and gangsterism, and work alongside the jointoperations of the SANDF and police. Only by working better together can we ensure the safety of the province.” According to Smith, there’s been a decline in gang-related incidents. “Equally important is that there has been a significant downturn in the number of gang-related murders in the area since the deployment of the NST. Whether coincidence or as a direct result of the increased level of policing is not clear, but we are extremely grateful nonetheless. The community of Bonteheuwel has, like many others, been struggling with crime and violence for many years. It is early days yet, but we hope that, as the NST settles in, that residents will start reaching out more with tips and intelligence that could help bring those with criminal intent to justice, and make the streets of the area safer for law abiding citizens,” adds Smith.
