ELSIES RIVER HIGH SCHOOL: TRAGEDY DAMPENS FESTIVITIES
Taxi rolls, learner dies TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07
I
nstead of celebrating the victory of winning the High School Jam (HSJ), learners at Elsies River High School returned to school, mourning the death of Grade 11 learner, Waydene Priga. The 17-year-old attended the HSJ at GrandWest on Saturday 17 August. On Sun-
day morning, around 06:30 she was a passenger in a taxi which overturned on 35th Street in Clarke Estate. A friend of Priga, Donisha Davids, said she was also in the taxi when it overturned: “We were on our way home. The taxi driver drove very fast, about 120km/h then the taxi rolled at the bridge near Malawi Camp. I can’t express how I feel at the moment.” School teacher Nashville Solomons told
the newspaper the school is at a loss of words: “This morning (Monday 19 August) we were supposed to celebrate winning HSJ, but we could not do so because of the loss of a learner. Instead of a celebratory assembly, we held a memorial service for Waydene,” said Solomons. Her rugby coach, Morné Moses, described Priga as a very bubbly person: “She played netball and rugby and was excellent in both.

I’ll always remember Waydene as the learner who stood up for others. May she rest in eternal peace.” Afrikaans teacher Edlin Olayn said she was a learner who stood out: “Waydene was a very happy girl who always greeted, even if it is from a distance. She was very bubbly, humble and vibrant. We will surely miss her presence in our class.” V To page 3.
