ACCIDENTAL FIRE: MOM LOSES EVERYTHING

Fire ravages Wendy house BRENDEN RUITER @ruitervaniewind

P

eople who live in Wendy houses should be extra vigilant to avoid fires during the festive season. This warning was given by the local councillor for Ravensmead, Jackie Visser, after a woman and her three children lost everything they owned when a fire broke out in their dwelling. “At this stage it is not clear what the cause of the fire was, but the family lost everything they owned. She lost her social grant card, as well as her and her three children’s identity documents. I want everyone to take care, especially during the festive season,” says Visser. Visser says that people need to take extra caution over the festive season. “Make sure your appliances are in good, working condition. It is also important that parents make sure that their children know the correct way to use appliances. This is also the season when people braai alot. Make sure your fires are extinguished when you are done. Small things can prevent loss of property or worse, lifes,” says Visser. Danny Bolton, a resident from Ravensmead, says the fire was accidental. “The fire spread rapidly through the Wendy house at the rear of another house. The occupants left immediately and no-one was injured. Unfortunately the delayed response of the fire department can be contributed to other emergency incidents,” says Bolton. Bolton says when the fire trucks finally arrived they tried connecting the hoses to the fire hydrant, but the water pressure caused the pipe to burst. “Another water pipe burst, further delaying the firefighters. They eventually used their own reserve water,” says Bolton. According to him neighbours jumping in to help, prevented the fire from spreading to the main house and neighbours’ houses. “If it wasn’t for the neighbours jumping in to help, there would have been more da-

Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s fire and rescue service says they received an emergency call on Tuesday 1 December at 11:19 of an informal structure alight in Kingston Street, Raven-

smead. “Fire crews from Bellville and Belhar were dispatched to the scene. The fire was contained to the single informal structure and was extinguished at 11:58. The burst of the water mains had no effect on the firefighting

operations as the vehicles (two fire appliances at the scene) have their own water tanks built in. They carried enough water to extinguish the single structure fire. No injuries were reported and four persons were displaced and accounted for,” says Carelse.
