Pastors are calling for more prayer to curb crime in the area. While the group, Pastors of Wesbank, is concerned about the constant rise of gangsterism and drug abuse, the recent discovery of three bodies in a field in the area has prompted them to start a series of prayer sessions that will be held at the Wesbank taxi rank, but want to invite congregations from all areas where crime is becoming rampant. On Saturday at about 10:30 police

were called to a crime scene at an open piece of ground in Voorbrug Road, next to Voorbrug High School. A passerby informed police that several bodies were lying in the field. On further investigation police recovered the bodies of three men, lying 20m apart. The identities of all three deceased are currently unknown and the men all suffered gunshot wounds to the head and back. All the victims appear to be in their mid-twenties and police suspect that they might be from the

Wesbank area. One of them was dressed in a blue and navy top, blue jeans and white shoes. Another victim was clothed in a bright yellow hooded top and grey, check pants with no shoes. The third victim had on grey jeans, a cream jacket, a brown hooded cap, and a navy-blue jersey. At the time of going to press the circumstances for this shooting were unknown but the possibility that the incident might be drug or gang-related will be investigated. Anyone with information or who might have witnessed the crime is

kindly requested to contact the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Paul Cillier on 021 954 9062, all information will be treated with the strictest confidentiality. A resident in the vicinity of the discovery, who did not want to be named for fear of victimisation, said the area surrounding the field was known for its drug outlets. She said this also impacted on the school because many of these drug dens held an open-house for learners, with disastrous results for the whole area. “I know that they are targeting the learners because they want to

destroy our children in the community,” she said. “You can sit here all day and see those yards with no fences that just have gangsters sitting around waiting to invite their customers in, and the police are doing nothing. “With so many of them operating we were waiting for something like this to happen – there was bound to be a drug war starting, and this is the start of it. I also blame the neighbours of these dens because they know what is happening but won’t come forward to tell the police, and its destroying the community.” . To page 2.
