T

he Goodwood ratepayers’ association and Glenwood neighbourhood watch are appealing to the City of Cape Town to have the fence along Betsie Verwoerd Street and Jakes Gerwel Drive repaired.

The two groups have also raised concerns regarding the safety of children who play outside their homes which is mere metres away from the highway.

Concerns of “criminal elements” entering the area through the fence have also been raised.

Regarding criminal elements, the City says they’re “not responsible for the protection of private property against criminals or criminal activities”.

Chairperson of the ratepayers association, Faizal Petersen, says they have been in correspondence with the City for the past year regarding the matter.

omb Alley Shellhole in Brackenfell is on a mission to trace the descendants of the soldiers, sailors and airmen who sacrificed their lives for their country.

The Shellhole, who recently moved to Brackenfell Cricket Club and meets on the third Thursday of every month, is one of the oldest units of the Memorable Order of the Tin Hats (MOTH) in the Western Cape and this year celebrates 75 years, having been established in November 1944 in Bellville.

Founded in Durban on 7 May 1927, MOTH, is the second oldest military veteran’s organisation in South Africa.

“The concepts of true comradeship, mutual help and sound memory have become the inspiration of our remarkable organisation of former soldiers, sailors, airmen and medics of all ranks,” says Gail Jordaan, Old Bill at MOTH. “It operates independently of race, religion or politics in the same way as front-line service, but with full democracy”.

The ideal of true comradeship are expressed through the organisation by practising front line friendship in civilian life, he explains; and the principle of sound memory, by remembering the fallen as a living companionship.

For Lucy, a black-and-tan female dog which was waiting for her forever home for years and years, it was a lucky turn of fate when she was finally adopted by her new family after TygerBurger reported on the dire situation at Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre (ARC) two weeks ago (“About 260 furbabies could be homeless”, 2 October).

However, Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW) has 15 more dogs remaining at the Uitsig ARC, which urgently need to find new homes after Uitsig ARC was recently liquidated.

“We serve their memory in practical actions which rise above divisions of social

status, race, or politics,” he says.

Although there are many memorial services for specific battles all over the country, the MOTH has a dedicated war commemoration service in Bellville which commemorates South African participation in all wars.

This is hosted annually in August by Bomb Alley Shellhole in collaboration with the Bellville sub-council at the Cenotaph at the Bellville Civic Centre.

“Because the names of the brave men and women who died in battles are not always recognised, we want to try and trace their living descendants,” he says.

“We realise that this will be a long process and have decided to start with the northern suburbs of Cape Town as that is where our annual memorial service is held.

“We have the names of those inscribed on memorials in the northern suburbs of Cape Town as well as their addresses at the time of death for the WW1 and WW2 veterans, but need the assistance and input of the public and living relatives to obtain up-to-date information.”

The land Uitsig ARC is situated on, was auctioned last Wednesday 15 October. On their Facebook Page, Uitsig ARC happily announced that a bid was made at the public auction by two animal lovers.

“They are waiting for confirmation and there is then a 14-day period until the offer is accepted. The second the offer is accepted by the liquidators, we will send an updated post, but the great news is that our animals will have a home until (they find) their forever homes,” was stated on the Facebook page.

In the meantime, the animal rescue centre is in desperate need of donations of food for the animals as their resources are running low. Visit their Facebook page for more information on how to donate food.

Nikita is a friendly, loving greyhound-africanis mix dog of about seven years of age. She has been at the shelter since May 2014 and desperately needs a happy home. She would like a male dog friend or to be your one and only.

Chikita is a labrador mix female with a very playful, happy-go-lucky nature. She loves to play fetch and gets on well with other dogs.

She is about three to four years old and is medium-sized.

“Not only is the safety of children a concern, but it also poses a risk of criminals elements that can easily come across the highway from the informal settlement next to Wingfield College.”

Chair of the Glenwood neighbourhood watch, James Ellis, is of the opinion that something bad needs to get the attention of the City.

“What happens if an accident must occur on the highway and a child gets injured in the process? Or if children are playing with the ball and it goes over the

fence resulting in one of the kids being impulsive and running into the road to fetch the ball? Will the City react then?

“This is also an easy access point into Goodwood for those who wish to commit crime. We have a huge number of elderly residents in the area and this is also putting them at risk,” says Ellis.

The Mayco member for transport, Felicity Purchase says it remains the responsibility of each owner to safeguard their home: “We understand the challenges residents face, and it is true that personal safety and the safety of properties in general, are of concern.

“However, the City is not responsible for the protection of private property against criminals or criminal activities – crime prevention is the police’s mandate and function, and they are resourced to

perform this function.

“Also, it remains the responsibility of each owner to safeguard their own property to the extent that they feel comfortable with.”

She says the City’s local roads department has a responsibility to provide fences along higher order roads such as freeways and where posted speed limits are equal to or above 100 km/h.

The purpose of the fences is to enhance the safety of road users – for example, fences are used to prevent pedestrians and animals from entering the roads.”

The current fence was replaced about eight years ago due to the previous fence’s dilapidated state.

“The new fence is of similar height. Adhoc maintenance will be done by the City as and when required.”

he Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust unveiled a brand new redesign of its logo, website and social media platforms last week at a launch event – all of which had been inspired by the children, staff and hospital itself.

The launch was held on the Tygerberg Campus on Thursday 17 October where brand ambassadors Vicky Sampson, best known for her 1995 hit “Afrikan Dream”, and Quanita Adams, a stage and screen actress, were in attendance.

Jennifer Geib, brand designer described as the mastermind behind the trust’s new logo, took the guests through the process of the new design step-by-step. “It is a logo, but more than that, there is a lot of thought that go into it,” she says.

The process for the design involved tapping into the minds and thoughts of key stakeholders, and diving deep into the trustees and finding out who they are, she says.

“We held workshops and worked out what the vision and mission is for the trust. We also looked at the challenges and the opportunities faced by the trust. A lot of this process involved looking at the audience of the brand – both internally such as the patients, doctors and trust, as well as externally such as the media and donors.

“We wanted to touch these audiences in different ways,” Geib explains.

The trust’s new logo also took some inspiration from the artwork done by the young patients, and also the building blocks of children’s healthcare.

Kirsten Samuels, digital account director who heads up the online platforms, unveiled the brand new website’s homepage. “It is all nice to be on social media, but it is important that we are present on the right ones.”

The updated social media accounts include LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.

He says that they are all privileged for having the opportunity to relaunch the trust and its image. “A lot of people and stakeholders were involved.”

He says the machinery they use in theatres cost millions and that with this rebranding and new image, the trust can hopefully help acquire new equipment, and also help make the experience of the children and mothers and fathers more pleasurable.

Wes-Kaap kraai koning in musiekkompetisie ge pianis Gerhard Joubert van Stellenbosch.

Gerhard is ook die wenner in die klavierkategorie en stap weg met die Pauline Nossel-prys van R4 000 vir die beste uitvoering van ’n klassieke werk deur ’n pianis.

Die graad-12 leerder aan die Hoërskool Jan van Riebeeck in Kaapstad wen ook die uitnodigingsprys van die Namibiese Nasionale Simfonie-orkes om volgende jaar in hul Concerto-fees in Windhoek op te tree.

Jordan en Gerhard het albei ook ’n bykomende R2 500 ontvang vir die beste uitvoering van ’n Suid-Afrikaanse werk in enige ronde van die kompetisie.

Daniel Brodie (19), ’n pianis oorspronklik van Oos-Londen en student aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch, het die bronsmedalje en R6 500-prysgeld gewen. Daniel en Leo Huan (16), ’n pianis van Pretoria, is albei ook aan-

gewys as die naaswenners in hul kategorie.

Liam Slabbert (16) van Brackenfell is as die wenner van die R5 000-kontantprys vir die houtblaaskategorie aangewys. Dié leerder aan die Hoërskool Durbanville het ook die Leon Hartshorne-prys vir die beste houtblaas-instrumentalis verower.

Altesame 17 musici het van Dinsdag 8 Oktober tot Saterdag 12 Oktober in die musiekkompetisie meegeding. Elkeen moes ’n wye repertoire uit verskillende styl-tydperke uitvoer en is beoordeel deur nege vooraanstaande musiekkenners.

“Dit was van die begin af duidelik dat dié opkomende sterre die gehalte van die kompetisie gaan verhoog. Elke deelnemer het in eie reg presteer,” sê Michael Maas, stigter van die kompetisie en voorsitter van die Nasionale Jeugmusiekkompetisie.

Jordan Brooks, ’n leerder aan die Hoërskool Westerford in Nuweland, is aangewys as die algehele wenner van die Nasionale Jeug-musiekkompetisie.

illarney race track will burn rubber the coming weekend as Killarney Motor Show returns. The event will give car enthusiasts an opportunity to ride along as the drivers of the E36 Cup throw their BMW 3 Series racers sideways on the Extreme Arena.

The E36 is the third-generation BMW 3 Series, built from 1990 to 2000; immensely popular in South Africa to this day, it’s regarded as one of the best-balanced and most ‘chuckable’ sports sedans ever offered to local petrol-heads. Powered by a screaming three-litre straight six, it’s a popular basis for rallycross and drifting specials.

Local groups at the E36 Cup race these models in main circuit races or rallycross, and they’ll have about 10 cars on parade at the Killarney Motor Show on Sunday 27 October, ready to give you the ride of your life.

The cars are modified for racing with very short gearing so, although their top speed is only around 185km/h, their acceleration is electrifying – and will be even more so

in the tight confines of the Extreme Arena.

To be part of the action will cost you R200 for five intense laps; the ride is open to all adults and children who are tall enough to see over the dashboard when strapped in.

The E36 crew will provide you with a crash helmet and strap you in for the slide of your life.

Book at the E36 pits at the end of the main straight, where the dragstrip crosses the Kfm Straight. You won’t have to wait there for your turn – the crew will tell you exactly when your ride is scheduled, so you can go off and enjoy the Killarney Motor Show until then.

That includes a full Tar Oval Racing event; you’ll get to see them at no extra cost at the biggest, most hands-on motor show in the Western Cape, open from 10:00 to 17:00.

There will be public karting on the ‘K’ circuit, while the new car dealers have their own dedicated test drive circuit for the first time, offering test drives on the latest models all day. Social media assists in duo’s arrest

Cape Town law students win at competition The Unisa Law Clinic recently hosted its Inter-regional Moot Court Competition for its students at the Unisa main campus in Pretoria. Each region or province had three representatives who competed against each other in the competition. The students had to appear before a real panel of advocates and magistrates as their judges. The best oralist was awarded to Christie-Lee Britz (22) from Durbanville, who described the competition as being a big learning curve. Her winning team consisted of Rieyaaz Narodien from Cape Town and Anelisa Mkotswana from Bellville. The team is already planning for another Moot Court Competition for next year where teams from all over Africa will compete in Senegal. A video which circulated on social media led to the arrests of two men in Elsies River on Thursday 17 October.

According to Goodwood police spokesperson Capt Wayne Theunis, the duo, aged 17 and 24, were involved in a robbery which occurred at the corners of Hugo Street and Voortrekker Road.

“Police officers saw the video footage, saw the suspects and apprehended them.

However, they could not be kept in police custody without a complaint or case made against them.

“In a joint operation between Goodwood police and law enforcement on Thursday 17 October, the two men were arrested in Elsies River when the complainant opened a case after identifying the suspects on a video that went viral on social media.

The investigation led police to an address in Bellville where the stolen cellphone was recovered,” said Theunis.

He explained that after the video did its rounds on social media, more complainants came forward stating that they too were robbed by the duo.

There have been no arrests after four robbers targeted a retail store in N1 City Mall on Sunday 20 October.

The mall’s spokesperson Andrea van Rensburg told TygerBurger the Foschini store was robbed at around 13:18.

It’s alleged that the men stole cellphones.

“The police were contacted immediately following the incident and are currently investigating the matter. At this time, we can confirm that no one was harmed, but no further information may be disclosed as it is an ongoing investigation,” said Van Rensburg.

Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed that a case of business robbery has been opened for investigation.

“According to reports, the armed men entered the business, threatened the staff with firearms and fled the scene with cellphones.

“Police detectives were on the scene combing for clues with no arrests so far.”

Bring terug die dae voor tegnologie ons lewens oorheers het Waar is die goeie ou dae toe jy die telefoon opgetel het om lang gesprekke met familie en vriende te hê om oor hul wel en weë uit te vind of om iemand met sy of haar verjaardag geluk te wens?

Deesdae is telefoongesprekke – net om sommer te klets, ’n rare verskynsel, want alles moet blitsig gedoen word.

Teksboodskappe, maar meer WhatsAppboodskappe, is aan die orde van die dag.

Woorde word tot die minimum beperk, want om emoji’s te gebruik is net sóveel vinniger en makliker!

Moet my nié verkeerd verstaan nie, tegnologie is hier om te bly en dit maak ons lewe inderdaad makliker.

Ek kan my nie indink hoe ek al my afsprake gaan nakom sonder programme soos “Waze” of “Googlekaarte” wat ons male sonder tal na ons bestemmings lei nie. Maar oorheers hierdie tegnologie nie ons lewens nie?

Die vierde industriële rewolusie is op almal se lippe en ons predik aan ons jeug dat hulle gerat moet wees vir werksgeleenthede wat hierdie nuwe era gaan bied.

Ons leef in ’n veranderende wêreld waar jy jou vaardighede voortdurend moet verbeter om by te bly met al die hedendaagse tegnologie.

Ons lees koerante op slimfone om op hoogte van nuusgebeure te bly, ons ontvang e-posse op ons Apple-horlosies, ons bevriend en gesels met onbekendes op sosiale media en volg vriende met mening om tred te hou met hul doen en late.

Maar dan tog, met al die hipermoderne tegnologie, word belangrike e-posse, teksen WhatsApp-boodskappe, in die werksplek of sosiaal, net ignoreer. Dit het byna ’n algemene tendens geword, en die verskoning gewoonlik dat daar nie genoeg tyd in die dag is om alles gedaan te kry nie.

Ek dink dat in hierdie hele tegnologiese proses iets van menswees verlore gegaan het. Wat het van etiket geword? Gee mense nie meer om hoe hulle optree nie?

Is dit nie net goeie maniere om op boodskappe, van watter aard ook al, te reageer nie? Wat het van ons samelewing geword as hierdie soort gedrag heel aanvaarbaar is?

Ek het ’n broertjie dood hieraan. Dit is ’n alledaagse taak om opvolgwerk te móét doen, van watter aard ook al.

Almal praat van die wetteloosheid en verval van ons pragtige land. Maar kyk bietjie om jou rond wie almal padreëls en wette verontagsaam.

As jy jou selfoon gebruik terwyl jy bestuur, is dit in orde? Elke nuwe e-pos of teksboodskap moet nóú gelees word; dit kan nie wag nie – of jy bestuur of nie, maar tog is dit nie ’n antwoord werd nie.

Ons kan nie vinger wys na ander terwyl ons self skuldig is nie.

Myns insiens is ons land nie slegs in wetteloosheid gedompel nie, maar ook in ’n emosionele verval van sy mense.

Matrics: follow your passion I want to commend all the Grade 12 learners for their persistence and hard work.

This is the culmination of all the effort that you have invested throughout your high school career.

This journey was surely filled with exciting moments, but also turbulent times.

The sad fact is that not all of you are quite certain what the future holds. In my experience as a professional speaker, I have come across this phenomenon, unfortunately mainly in our public schooling system.

I want to give our learners something to reflect on in order to achieve success, and discover their passion.

Most of the kids do not even know what their passions are, and settle on the mundane in choosing a career path.

I have discovered that the key ingredient of passion is essential in charting the path towards a satisfying vocation.

If you do not possess passion you will find yourself in a rut. You will be like a passenger on a bus, enjoying the ride but not entirely sure where to exit.

If you do, however, know what your passion is, you will know what you are doing and why. If you are into the arts or sports, for instance, it will become natural to achieve excellence.

Passion will drive you to garner the internal potential to succeed at whatever you set your mind to. You, however, also need to understand what are the limitations of this passion.

A key component to look at is also the environmental limitations on your passion.

You have to believe that you are unique, and possess enormous potential, but these

barriers can limit you. In order to break free and become all you are destined to be, you need to become fearless.

You should be in competition with yourself.

Stir yourself to move from good to great, from outstanding to excellent, and from excellence to influence.

If you want to inspire your generation you need to keep drawing on your uniqueness, skill and talent.

Let nothing hold you back.

You are meant for greatness, so don’t settle for just being good.

In the words of Anthony. S. Nanchou: “A proper attitude towards your passion, will give you wings to outfly eagles”.

All the best for the challenge that awaits you, I am confident you will be successful.

Klippies mooier as sand, onkruid So twee weke gelede het iemand van Durbanville gekla oor huiseienaars wat klippies op die sypaadjies gooi, en wie dan verantwoordelik gaan wees as iemand seerkry op die sypaadjie met die klippies (“Pavements are a huge concern”, TygerBurger 9 Oktober).

Ons weet almal sypaadjies behoort aan die munisipaliteit, maar meneer die munisipaliteit onderhou nie die sypaadjies nie. Die goedkoopste manier om jou omgewing en sypaadjie voor jou huis netjies te hou, is om klippies te gooi. Party eienaars laat doen plaveisel op hul eie onkoste, maar almal het nie die geld om dit te doen nie.

Wat doen die munisipaliteit om die sypaadjies en parke in Sonkring, Brackenfell netjies te hou? Net mooi niks!

Hier is mense wat nie omgee hoe die sypaadjie voor hul huise lyk nie – dit is net sand en onkruid. So, wat verkies jy om jou omgewing netjies te hou? Die onkruid en sand of die klippies?

Ek kan jou verseker die klippies lyk baie netjieser.

As jy of enigiemand die munisipaliteit sover kan kry om die sypaadjie te kom teer of in stand te hou, tel ek al my klippies persoonlik op.

Where else must we walk I agree totally with the letter which appeared in your newspaper this week regarding misuse of pavements (“Pavements a huge concern”, TygerBurger 9 October). The letter was written by Tammy Coetzee, in response to an earlier letter by someone who called himself of herself Stapper (“Skerp klippe op sypaadjies is ’n gevaar”, 18 September).

There is really not much more that I can add other than to voice my frustration and amazement regarding this subject: pavements are the property of Cape Town City and municipalities that fall under it. Imagine being a cyclist who needs to avoid a car, or being someone who walks their dog on the pavement and not having access to the space because of rocks, stones or the excessive use of plants.

Over the past few weeks, I have noticed more and more pavements being covered by very large and sharp rocks, one, in particular, being on the corner of Witboom and Reservoir Road, Kenridge, right opposite the back gate of Fairmont High School. This area, and indeed, any area near schools, need to be a safe space and to remain so.

The rocks in that area are so large that they conceal the name of the road!

I appeal to the authorities to take immediate action.

Ek noem hier twee spesifieke voorstede, Heemstede en Groenvallei, waar ek woon.

Hier blaf honde dag en nag – toegesluit agter ysterhekke en hemelhoë mure 24 uur van die dag.

Die arme diere is so gefrustreerd dat hulle moet uiting gee aan hulself en dit is daarom die aanhoudende geblaf tot my en jou ongerief.

Mnr. en me. gaan vir ’n Sondag by vriende kuier vir die dag. Die hondekind moet by die huis bly en die heel dag blaf. Ons wat die naweek by die huis is, moet nou die heel dag en nag na ’n aanhoudende geblaf luister, wat jou teen die mure uit dryf.

Sommige diere-eienaars dink “as hulle vir die diere ’n bak kos en water gee dan is dit mos oukei”. Nee mnr. en me., hulle wil buite die erf ook wees om bietjie te hardloop en te ruik om van hul frustrasies ontslae te raak (op ’n leiband natuurlik).

Komaan diere-eienaars, hê ’n bietjie respek vir ons ouens ook wat nie diere het nie.

Maak jou hond(e) stil. En laat die outjies bietjie oefening kry. Moenie eers probeer om die wetstoepassing te bel nie; hulle stel geensins belang nie.

Hulle vra eerder vir jou om vorms te voltooi en tyd te hou van hoe lank die honde blaf.

Derde interkerklike konferensie gehou D

ie derde jaarlikse konferensie van die interkerklike vrouebediening Daughters of God Unite word van Vrydag 25 tot Saterdag 26 Oktober in die Good Hope Suite by GrandWest gehou.

Die konferensie staan onder leiding van past. Susan de Villiers van die Apostoliese Geloofsendingkerk en sy is dienend by die Eersteriviergemeente.

“Ek het vir ongeveer tien jaar die enkelouerbediening van die AGS in Eersterivier gelei en het toe besluit om vanweë die groot behoefte aan leiding, ondersteuning en kameraadskap ander vroue te bemagtig.

“Met die goedkeuring en seën van ons senior pastoor, Trevor Herbert, het ek drie jaar gelede die interkerklike Vrouebediening begin,” sê sy.

Die tema van hierdie konferensie, #Destruction Impossible, is juis gerig op die skrifgedeelte 2 Korinthiërs 4 verse 8 tot 12.

“Vroue gaan deur soveel trauma, byvoorbeeld mishandeling (fisiek, emosioneel, verbaal en soveel meer), asook finansiële druk en werkloosheid. Soms spook hulle ook met die uitdaging van kinders wat betrokke is by bendegeweld en dwelmmisbruik en dit alles word in stilte gedoen. Soms word die nood so groot dat hulle selfs hul eie lewe wil neem,” sê sy.

Jodi takes Open Mic Jazz crown The nail-biting final of the Open Mic Jazz singing competition at GrandWest took place on Wednesday 16 October. The six finalists had the audience on their feet supporting their favourites.

At the end of the night, the judges crowned Jodi Fredericks (23) from Parow as the winner. Leah Adams (27) from Heathfield came second and Caitlin Farmer (21) from Maitland third.

Jodi, who is studying music at the University of Cape Town (UCT), walked away with R40 000. Leah, a music teacher won R15 000 and Caitlin, also a music student at UCT, went home with R10 000.

“All the finalists put on a superb show, the talent was astounding,” says Elouise Matthys, promotions manager at GrandWest.

“With an audience of more than a 1 000 people, it certainly felt like a proper jazz show.

Matthys congratulated all the finalists and especially the winner, Jodi. “We’d also like to thank and congratulate the organisers for putting together this excellent competition.

“The whole competition was an incredible success. GrandWest is looking forward to hosting it again next year.”

Die Kaapse weergawe van die jaarlikse Liefde by die dam-konsert vind op Saterdag 16 November op die Meerendal-wynplaas buite Durbanville plaas.

Liefde by die dam, genoem na Valiant Swart se treffer met dieselfde naam, is ’n vertoonvenster vir plaaslike talent.

Dit word in samewerking met Bok Radio en Via (DStv-kanaal 147) aangebied.

Die program, met musiek vir jonk en oud, beloof ’n musiekbelewenis vir die hele gesin of ’n

lekker dag uit saam met vriende.

Die bekende Suid-Afrikaanse kunstenaars en groepe wat vanjaar die verhoog gaan laat vlamvat is Die Heuwels Fantasties, Francois van Coke, Early B, Arno Carstens, Majozi, Karlien van Jaarsveld, Snotkop en Loki Rothman.

Pierre Greeff van Die Heuwels Fantasties en een van die organiseerders, sê: “Ons help graag ander; bring jou kombers en los dit na die konsert agter. Liefde Wen sal seker maak dit kry die regte

huis.”

Greeff sê Meerendal is die ideale venue vir die Kaapse konsert.

“Vanjaar sal daar meer ruimte wees vir konsertgangers en daar sal ook meer kroegfasiliteite wees.”

Konsertgangers kan hul eie piekniekmandjies bring.

Daar sal ook ’n verskeidenheid kosstalletjies wees.

Die konsert word aangebied deur Bakgatpromosies, wat reeds meer as 20 jaar ervaring in die musiekbedryf het.

Dit is ’n piekniek-konsert, waar jy jou kombers kan bring en lekker saam met jou gesin of vriende op die gras kan kuier met goeie musiek. Die kunstenaars wat gaan optree is Jo Black, Roan Ash en The Voice SA wenner, Tasché Burger.

Om te verseker dat almal kan sien, sal hoë stoele (op pote) nie toegelaat word voor die verhoog en op die grasperk tydens die Jo Black konsert nie. Sambrele kan saamgebring word maar moet afgeslaan word tydens die optrede. Daar sal pouses tussen die

onderskeie kunstenaars se optredes wees. Bring ’n hoed saam en smeer genoeg sonroom aan.

Die venue het genoeg parkering, maar dit is ’n entjie se stap na die grasperk waar die konsert gehou word.

V DJ Omar Morto and friends will host a Halloween Party at the Hanover Street night club at GrandWest on Thursday 31 October. V Danger in the Dark, David Kramer’s new musical is at the Baxter Theatre until Saturday 2 November. This re-imagining of the Kramer Petersen hit of the 90s: Poison, tells the story of a young, idealistic social worker, who stands up to the drug dealers on the Cape Flats. When she discovers that her friend is caught in an unhappy relationship with a drug lord, she tries to rescue her. Most of the original Taliep Petersen compositions have been retained, while Kramer has written a new libretto. The shows are weekdays at 19:30 and Saturdays at 14:00. Curro, Fairmont en Stellenberg was die afdelingwenners in verlede week se ses-aandie-kant toernooi en sal saam met Edgemead (as ’n ongelukkige verloorder) vandag (Woensdag) op die Fairmont Oval sake in die eindronde uitspook. . Philip Veldman (Stellenberg, 73) en Jake Collinge (Curro, 6/12) was die groot uitblinkers in die kwarteindronde-kragmetings van PNA Cape Gate se uitklopkompetisie vir o.15-spanne. In vandag (Woensdag) se halfeindwedstryde speel HS Durbanville teen Curro en Brackenfell teen Stellenberg.

In die halfeindronde van die Cemstoneuitklopkompetisie vir o.14-spanne vandag is Fairmont en D.F. Malan slaags terwyl Stellenberg gasheer speel vir HS Durbanville.

Connor skitter in Maleisië: Conner Thiart van Goshukan Karate in Durbanville het onlangs vir Suid-Afrika in Maleisië by die vyfde Goju Ryu-karate-wêreldkampioenskap verteenwoordig. Connor het in die afdeling vir seuns tussen 10 en 11 jaar (o.43 kg-afdeling) meegeding en ’n vyfde plek behaal in individuele kata, ’n bronsmedalje in individuele kumite en ’n goue medalje vir spankumite.

yden Senger (Durbanville Golf Club) bounced back from the heartache of losing in a play-off at Clovelly last month to win his first Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series title of the season at Royal Cape Golf Club recently.

By shooting a 2-under 70 in challenging conditions at Royal Cape, 18-year-old Ayden qualified for the #BridgeJuniorSeries regional final, where he will compete for the ultimate prize – an allexpenses-paid trip to the North and South Junior Championship at Pinehurst in the United States of America (USA) in July 2020.

Ayden was the only player in the field to match the testing way that Royal Cape had been set up for the tournament, with all of the pins seemingly placed at inaccessible spots on the greens. One junior golfer who had no problem finding at least one of the pins, was 15-year-old Paarl Boys High learner John Rabie who took home a R5 000 Bridge Fund Man-

A chip in for birdie on the tough 3rd gave Ayden the early lead. But a double drop on the following hole set him back. A birdie on the short 8th got him back to level, but he immediately gave the shot back on the 9th. However, consecutive birdies on 12 and 13 and on 15 and 16 saw Ayden pull away from the field and seal the victory.

“I haven’t played Royal Cape in a while and it was much tighter than I remember,” he said. “I hit my driver so straight today and that is probably why I won, because keeping your ball out of the trees off the tee was key.”

Ayden is determined to win the Bridge Junior Series regional final and follow in the footsteps of fellow Durbanville Golf Club member Tyran Snyders, who in July became the first South African to win the North and South Junior Championship at Pinehurst.

“Every young South African

golfer dreams about playing in America, against the best in the world,” he said. “So, having a shot at playing Pinehurst was one of my goals for the year.”

The juniorseries.bridgefm.co.za launched in 2017, is managed by the SA Golf Development Board and endorsed by GolfRSA. Open to boys and girls in the u.13 and u.19 divisions, the Series is played across 18 tournaments hosted by leading courses countrywide. The 18 tournament winners contest 36-hole regional finals in April 2020 with the two winners jetting off to Pinehurst.

“We are delighted that Ayden managed to secure a spot in the regional finals by winning at Royal Cape,” said Paul Stewart, chief executive at Bridge Fund Managers. “He is a young man with a very calm head, which is a big advantage when facing the challenges golf inevitably throws your way.”
