Crowds at pool raise concern TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07

Goodwood resident has raised concerns about an increased number of patrons at the local swimming pool. According to James Ellis, who is also the chair of the Glenwood Neighbourhood Watch, there has been a huge increase in numbers at Goodwood swimming pool over weekends since the recent lift of Covid-19 restrictions “Saddest part is that it is not even residents or children from Goodwood, but from neighbouring areas like Elsies River, Ruyterwacht, Parow and more. “These recreational areas are for all in the City and we cannot keep people away, but, we need to take control of these facilities. The custodians should not just put these facilities out for people to use, but should also take responsibility for all actions going along with it.” In response to the claims, the City’s mayco member for community service, Zahid Badroodien, said each municipal swimming pool, including Goodwood, has signage around the facility requesting patrons to adhere to Covid-19 regulations whilst at the facility. He also noted that the City has received complaints of crowd control at this facility. The rules and regulations are stipulated as follows: . The number of patrons allowed at all open municipal swimming pools has been significantly reduced, depending on each pool’s capacity. Currently, a maximum of 100 patrons are allowed inside Goodwood swimming pool at any point. . There is access control at the entrance
limiting the number of patrons allowed entry into the facility. Screening is done on entry and persons with a temperature reading of over 38 °C are not allowed in. . Patrons are required to observe social distancing in and around the pool and take cognisance of social distancing floor/wall stickers, specifically at the entrance and around the pool deck. . While facility staff is on hand to clean and disinfect facilities, patrons are required to sanitise their hands frequently and adhere to all the safety signage displayed around the pool at all times. . No showers or change rooms are available. Patrons are required to come dressed and ready to swim. Badroodien said the main challenge is with young children who come to the facility without parent or adult supervision and struggle to adhere to social distancing. “Whilst the rules are implemented as far as possible by all staff on duty (including lifeguards, security guards and facility management), we appeal to the public to ensure that they accompany their children to the swimming pool and do not leave them unsupervised. “There have been numerous engagements with the Goodwood Ratepayers’ and Residents Association about the increase in foot traffic and congestion outside the facility, from when it opened for the season late last year. “Law enforcement and traffic services have been working with the community through the local councillor to apply multiple interventions on days when it is busy. This is ongoing and seasonal, and with schools reopening, the numbers have declined during weekdays,” he added.
