BORN ON WOMEN’S DAY: DEEMED A ‘MISCARRIAGE’
‘Miracle baby’ an inspiration DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
A
zariah Gordon was stillborn on Women’s Day six years ago. Her mother Megan calls her “a true Women’s Day miracle baby” – and that’s no exaggeration. Little Azariah, who turned six on Friday 9 August and is now a healthy little girl attending Eikendal Primary School in Kraaifontein, was born prematurely at 25 weeks. First, she was deemed as a miscarriage and later stillborn, only to be revived minutes later when air was blown back into her lungs. Megan recalls the day as if it happened yesterday. “I woke up around 04:00 on Friday 9 August 2013 to go to the bathroom and this is when I saw light pink stains on my underwear. At first, I did not want to say anything because maybe it was normal,” she says. “I couldn’t be sure so I mentioned it to my family and that is when everything turned into a nightmare.” Megan recalls being absolutely calm. “I wasn’t sure what to do because she was moving and kicking and to my knowledge, she was okay and alive. “Everyone else was stressed and praying and my family quickly started to suspect that I was having a miscarriage.” When Megan got to the day hospital in Kraaifontein she was informed by medical staff that she was experiencing an inevitable miscarriage. “Moments later another nurse came in and asked what I was there for and I explained. She then took a heart monitor and checked the baby’s heart. “She said to me, “I’m calling Tygerberg Hospital. This child’s heart is still beating. “I knew Azariah was fighting although
she was dying inside of me. I was confused not knowing whether my baby will make it or not. “No one explained anything to me. Next thing I know I am at Tygerberg Hospital where several doctors told me they could do nothing to save my baby. “Such things happened. I was in my early stages of birth and they could do nothing to keep her heart going, they told me. “I was just 20 years old and scared. My womb had torn, and I was bleeding internally, and my baby was lying breech. I had to wait for her to turn before I could push. “In my mind, I thought, how do I give birth to a dead child, how do I even push”. “I could only cry as she was still moving inside me, but every doctor and nurse kept saying she’s not going to make it. “I did not want to give birth because inside me she was alive and when she comes out ... she would be gone.” Moments later Azariah turned herself and Megan gave birth at 25 weeks to a baby weighing 770g and whose veins could be clearly seen through a transparent body. “I watched as death covered her little body from pink to blue.” Her heart stopped countless times and being too young, her lungs were only just developed and she could not breathe. “The next few minutes were a blur to me. I was in shock and I thought it was the end. I would never see her again. I did not even get to hold her”. She was then taken out of the room wrapped in a blanket and after what seemed like an eternity, the sister rushed back to tell her Azariah was breathing again and is in an incubator. “I couldn’t believe she was alive.” Mom and daughter spent the next three months in hospital.
