EFF demands Supporters of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) makes their way to the municipal buildings in Kraaifontein during a peaceful protest on Friday 27 November. Houses equipped with toilets, equal job opportunities for all and working street lights. These are just some of the demands made by the EFF to the local council in during its planned protest. This was after the “red beret brigade”, led by regional chair Unathi Ntame, visited the police station to demand, among other things, that the next station commander to succeed Brig Gerda van Niekerk not be white. The next stop was at the day hospital where Ntame alleged that statuses of HIV-positive people receiving antiretroviral treatment at the facility are being exposed without their consent as their patient files are of a different colour to other patients. The group then proceeded to the Kraaifontein municipality. At each of these institutions, Ntame gave representatives five days to respond to the demands made. This followed protests in Brackenfell in the previous weeks. PHOTO:JACO MARAIS
BURST PIPE: CITY OF CAPE TOWN TAKES NO PRIDE
Water-leak from cemetary THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo
A
concerned Kraaifontein resident has expressed her concern about what she referres to as the City’s lack of pride in the quality of services it provides. Ronell Backhouse of Windsor Park says she has noticed water from the cemetery flowing along the pavements. “Upon investigating, I found out that the water comes from a manhole just outside the
cemetery and it seems to be that it comes from a burst pipe,” she says. “I have reported this a number of times, but I have not seen a single official come to inspect it.” Backhouse says this shows that the municipality does not take pride in its job to make the city one that residents can be proud of. “One can only imagine how much money is being wasted from every litre that flows through the street. “Cape Town has just come out of a drought
and we might hit Day Zero if such problems are not fixed on time.” Mayco member for waste and water Xanthea Limberg says the problem is “likely explainable” as the area is known to have a high water table. “A common occurrence at this location is for the Telkom manhole to act as a subsoil drain, allowing groundwater to run from it during rainy days. “However, the City will have the water tested to confirm whether it is groundwater as
suspected or municipal water running to waste,” Limberg says. She further says there is no reason to believe this originates from the City’s drinking water supply network. Limberg says Backhouse’s concerns and water-wise attitude is appreciated and encourages her and other residents to continue reporting possible water-wastage instances in the city. V Leakages can be reported through the City’s call centre on 0860 103 089 or by SMS on 31373.
