PARENTS CONCERNED: ANXIETY AMONG CHILDREN

Lockdown: ‘Kids are not okay’ DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

W

ith the opening of schools extended to 14 February, the pandemic is taking a heavy toll on children. As parents may have mixed emotions about the impact of schools opening so late in the term, children show their anxiety by throwing tantrums and displaying anti-social behaviour and depression. A mother in Brackenfell tells of the impact lockdown regulations had on her nine-yearold daughter. “My daughter has always had a strong personality, so much so that I sometimes worried that she was overconfident. But with lockdown her personality started to change,” says the parent whose name is not published to protect the identity of the child. “When she had to go back to school last year, she did not want to and the things she said had me very worried. She started getting panic attacks and was referred to a psychologist who diagnosed her with social anxiety. She didn’t want to be around people at all and said things like ‘What does anything matter and why are we alive anyway?’ “Every day is different; some days better than others,” she says. The identity of all the parents TygerBurger spoke to will be protected. One such parent is very worried about her son. “He is generally a quiet child, but its getting worse. He misses his friends and routine. He is tired of playing computer games and bored with himself,” she says. Yet another parent spoke out about her two children. “During hard lockdown my 11-year-old did

not want to do anything and was paranoid about everything. Yesterday he told me, ‘Schools must open now, I cant handle this anymore’! His younger sister is very emotional as she misses her friends,” the mom says. Several other parents TygerBurger spoke to say their children have shown behavioural changes mostly due to the fact that they are bored and miss interaction with their friends, and are prone to temper tantrums. “My teenager ended up in the clinic last year and is currently on anti-depression medication. She was on a waiting list to get into the clinic as there were so many cases,” one mom says. Dr Iqbal Karbanee, paediatrician at Cape Gate Mediclinic and CEO of Paed-IQ Babyline, says this behaviour may be a normal reaction under the current uncertainty. Karbanee says it is essential to prioritise the wellbeing of your child or children during this uncertain time. “We are seeing an increase in the number of children displaying unusual behaviour as a direct consequence of the circumstances brought on by the pandemic,” he says. These changes can be very subtle, and may be mistaken for bad behaviour, rather than seen in context, which if not addressed correctly, could have a long-term negative impact. Children under the age of three may be experiencing mood swings, nightmares, fidgeting or the sudden onset of bedwetting. “I’ve seen this in my own child, who suddenly started getting nightmares of getting sick after eating food given to her by a stranger. ietsryers en motoriste word gewaarsku om op die uitkyk te wees vir aanvallers in die omgewing van Morningstar in Durbanville. In die jongste voorval is ’n fietsryer verlede Saterdag deur twee mans langs Langebergweg aangeval. Hy is geslaan met ’n sak met ’n swaar voorwerp, vermoedelik ’n baksteen. Volgens kapt.

Head for the rolling hills The beach might be off limits, but there are other options to enjoy the outdoors. The Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy (BHRC) offers a 92km trail network for mountain bikers through rolling hillsides, conservation areas, vineyards and farmland. Annual permits or day permits allow for access to multiple route options that cater for various skill and fitness levels. The BHRC is a registered non-profit organisation that forms part of the Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve. While the core focus is to care for, expand and sustain the remaining Renosterveld in the area, there is also an emphasis on community development. Unlike Fynbos, which grows in poor soils, Renosterveld grows in very rich fertile soils. As a result, most of it has been replaced with vines and other commercial crops. Less than 4% of the original Renosterveld in the Western Cape remains. Concerned landowners together with Cape Nature Conservation initiated a conservation programme to protect the remaining vegetation, rehabilitate sensitive areas and reintroduce species lost to

the area. The member farms commit to implementing environmentally sustainable farming practices, fire management and alien eradication, with the conservation and protection of the Renosterveld a major priority. The MTB permit fees go towards trail maintenance, alien clearing and community development. Only permit holders are allowed access to the trails from sunrise to sunset and bike boards must be displayed on handlebars. Annual permits valid until 31 December are available online with the option to collect from Cyclosport in Kuils River, Attitude Cycles in Brackenfell or Chris Willemse Cycles at Willowbridge. It costs R700 for a main member, R600 for a spouse, R500 for students and pensioners and R400 for juniors (u.18). Day permits cost R70 and are sold at the route access points, including Zevenwacht and Hazendal wine farms, and at Engen Soneike. V Visit www.bottelaryconservancy.co.za for details and a map.

Building sites a new target Following two armed robberies at construction sites in Brackenfell last week, police are urging people in the building industry to be vigilant. On Friday 29 January two gangs of robbers hit two different sites. The first robbery occurred at 05:30 in the morning at a building site on the corner of Angelier Street and Brackenfell Boulevard. “Six men all dressed in blue overalls entered the site and informed the security guard that they were there to drop of steel. After gaining access to the site they drew firearms and held the guard at gunpoint while opening the containers on site. They stole tools form the containers before fleeing in an unknown vehicle,” says police spokesperson Capt Erica Crouse. Later the same day at 15:10 another gang of six driving a bakkie en-

tered a brick paving company on the Botfontein Road in Brackenfell. “They entered under the pretence to buy bricks. There was only one employee left on the site. They informed him that they would load the bricks themselves. One robber asked the employee for a glass of water and while walking with him pulled a firearm on him and held him up in the office demanding cash, laptops and cellphones before fleeing,” says Crous. According to police the two incidents are not linked as the description of the men are different. However, it does fit the modus operandi of another incident that took place in Bothasig on the same day. Nobody was injured and no shots were fired. Both investigations continue. – Desirée Rorke

Still no permanent principal after 2 years THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo

W

hile waiting to hear when an advertisement for a principal at Northpine Technical High School would be placed, current deputy principal Van Loubser will continue running the school. This comes after the department did not approve the appointment of a new interim principal who had already been identified. “Loubser took over the duties in October 2019 and would have served until January this year,” spokesperson Bronagh Hammond says. “Ntombi Mqumbisa would be appointed as interim principal as from 1 January 2020, however this position had not been approved by the department, thus Loubser continued to act as principal.” Hammond says everyone who meets the requirements is free to apply. “By satisfying the post requirements, a candidate becomes eligible for appointment, but is not guaranteed such appointment.” She explains that the school governing body is responsible for the establishment of a selection committee. “This selection committee is responsible for determining the selection criteria and related tools that will be applied, shortlisting candidates for interviews as well as interviewing all shortlisted candidates. They also refer shortlisted candidates for posts on the senior management team of a public school to the provincial competency assessment centre for the competency based as-

sessment. Then, preferred candidates for possible recommendation for appointment are listed before submitting this to the governing body concerned. “A final recommendation may then be made by that governing body to the provincial head of the department.” Final consideration and approval is then given and, depending on the processes, the vacancy can be filled. Hammond says this could happen between July and October this year. This lengthy process has some people thinking a plan to get Loubser permanently assume the position is being devised. A source with close ties to the school says the latter was not a fitting candidate for the position, accusing him of mismanagement. “He has poor leadership skills and mistreats some staff members as well,” the source says. “His conduct towards this role has been savoury at times, no one has faith in him.” Hammond calls the accusations baseless and says they have not been proven. The school’s governing body’s secretary Stephanie Noble says the structure is aware of the allegations and requested that a new interim principal be appointed. “We are aware of some teachers that have made claims of victimisation. This was off the record though so no official charges were made. We met with the circuit manager and director and the only explanation given was that the secretary-general Brian Schreuder did not see a need for a caretaker principal as there was a deputy principal,” she says.

Kraaifontein woman turns 100: Peerless Park North’s Freda Rickards turned 100 years old on Thursday 29 January. The century-year-old woman owes her longevity to healthy eating and respect for elders when she was younger. She has outlived three of her five children as well as her husband, who died at age 65. Her five children blessed her with eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

“The last communication we received from the circuit manager Dr Van der Voort on Wednesday 9 December 2020 was that Schreuder must sign off on the appointment.” This, according to Noble, did not happen. Instead, the SGB later received information that the selected candidate was not suitable and the second choice, who was suitable, has since taken another principal’s post and that the post must be readvertised. “We can neither confirm nor deny this statement except to say that it is curious and very frustrating that this post is still not filled almost two years since the last principal left. We go through all the necessary processes, but to date no vacant posts have been filled at this school.” Noble also says there has been two attempts from their side to appoint a head of department for mathematics, but the post is still vacant. She questions Loubser’s ability to take over the position permanently. “Whenever we question Loubser on the mistakes he makes, he claims to not know how things work in those situations. That should give an indication on whether he has the knowledge and expertise to lead.” She finds it sad that the school is not delivering and that it is without proper management, something that is disempowering to learners. “What is going to happen to these learners if they fail because of a lack of poor leadership at this school? That is the concern of the parents and that is why there needs to be proper management at the school,” she concludes.

FROM PAGE 1 “This anxiety was a direct result of learning at school that she should not share food or cutlery because it may make her sick,” explains Karbanee. He adds that children are having to unlearn many social norms, from “sharing is caring” to not sharing at all, given how the coronavirus is spread. This can create confusion. Young children that have not been going to crèche may become less confident in social settings and even refuse to interact with their peers. “Anxiety may turn usually sociable and playful children into clingy, tearful kids who instead of being happy to go to crèche, only want to sit on their mothers’ laps.” How to identify anxiety in children “Parents know their children. Every child

has a baseline behaviour. If they do something that deviates from their normal baseline set of behaviours, then it may very well be that your child is being impacted by the uncertainty brought on by the pandemic,” explains Karbanee. Karbanee says it is also essential for parents to become aware of their own emotional states, as their own anxiety could spill over to the child. “For school-going children, it is best to deal with it cognitively through reasoning or explaining to them and talking to them about what is happening; both around them and their own emotional state of being. For children who are in the process of developing their cognitive skills and cannot yet reason, it is best for the parents to be extra sensitive to their children’s needs,” he advises.

Pipers cheer up staff at hospitals NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

edical staff at hospitals across Cape Town are experiencing a change of scenery when their shifts change – in the form of bagpipes. Members of the Cape Town Highlanders Pipe Band Association have started playing at different hospitals to pay tribute to those frontline workers battling the Covid-19 pandemic. Mike Taljaard, the band officer of the association, who lives in Panorama, says their first hospital concert took place last week at Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt hospital in Bell-

ville. A total of 14 of the 32 members of the band took to the streets in front of the hospital, playing old bagpipe band favourites like Scotland the Brave and Amazing Grace. Staff of the hospital and passers-by gathered in front of the building and took videos, while others stood in windows or the raised staff parking area, looking down. Taljaard says a highlight was when an audiologist came to speak to them, amazed to hear a band of pipers and drummers playing together. “And it’s nice when people clap hands.” Louis Leipoldt was their first hospital of choice, because of one the members’ wives working there. Once they got the all-clear to play there, they started contacting other hospitals in the area. They played from 18:30 to 19:15, as this is when the shifts change and new personnel take over. The group printed a special drum cover which says “Supporting Frontline Workers,” especially for their hospitals project. According to Taljaard they started the project in part because they cannot perform anymore, as well as a way of giving back to those doing so much for the ordinary citizen. They have a band member who is a doctor, family members who are doctors or who work at hospitals and some of their members have had the virus themselves. Yesterday they played at Vincent Pallotti Hospital in Pinelands. They’ve lined up playing gigs at 10 hospitals in total, but are willing to play at more. The band is one of three in Cape Town. They regularly tour overseas (when it’s allowed) and are based at the Castle of Good Hope. Currently the band gets together via Zoom to practise. Palliative care takes back seat THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo

W

ith Thursday 4 February being World Cancer Day, TygerBurger looks into how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected patients who make use of facilities for treatment, patient management in the public sector and the provincial health department’s plan of action in minimising the risk of exposure at facilities. The pandemic has affected the lives of many chronic disease patients, causing panic about what would become of them if the need for urgent medical care comes. Gloria Mbunyana from Kraaifontein says last year was the most worrisome period she had to deal with her three-year battle with breast cancer. “From the day the lockdown was announced in March, I had questions if I would ever be able to continue receiving chemotherapy at Tygerberg hospital,” she says. She soon realised there was no reason to worry because the management at the hospital had safeguarded the place. “There was absolutely no reason for us, patients, to worry because the hospital had everything taken care of.” Mbunyana says care for cancer patients has been the department’s priority from the beginning. Although the pandemic has not had much of an effect on the paediatric oncology department at Tygerberg Hospital, fear of the virus might have led to many children being undiagnosed. The pandemic also led to a slight decrease in the paediatric cancer patients, probably due to parents reluctant to access state hospitals due to Covid-19,” the hospital’s Rozaun Botes says. “The hospital did, however, see a reduction in referrals of adult patients in the third quar-

ter of last year due to the limited numbers of oncology surgical lists and reduced movement of the population resulting in the hard lockdown. The referrals increased again in the last quarter,” she says. These do lead to delays in cancer patients whose primary treatment is surgical. Access to theatres and advanced imaging were limited and had to be negotiated on individual patient basis to ensure crucial investigations and operations were done for emergency purposes. “Long-term paediatric survivors could not access these necessary investigations and therefore were negatively affected. At the same time only one parent could accompany a child that had to be admitted for chemotherapy and parental discussion had to be online, sometimes difficult in the context of limited resources for families,” Botes explains. For immediate admissions, individual patient case negotiations took place with management to ensure access. “All other patients have continuing access to the oncology department as there has been no limits on seeing new patients.” During the third quarter in 2020, Botes explains that new referrals did reduce for all patients as they struggled to navigate through the primary health clinics and hospital outpatients during the hard lockdown of the second quarter. While some staff from the oncology unit have assisted in the Covid-19 wards, those who remained managed the load without detriment to patients. With the paediatric oncology unit housed in a separate wing far from the Covid-19 wards, having good resources for personal protective equipment and strict access control, Botes says the unit has been fortunate in ensuring the safety of patients and staff all together.

Be the Difference Foundation kicked off its annual back-to-school campaign which seeks to provide over 500 Kraaifontein learners with school supplies and help ease the burden from parents.

Donate to school campaign THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo Local non-profit organisation, Be the Difference (BTD) has kicked off its sixth annual back-to-school campaign, which seeks to raise school supplies for Grade 1 to 7 learners from seven Kraaifontein schools in the 2021 academic year. For this to become a reality, the foundation’s Granthem Abrahams says he needs help from residents. “Anything that Kraaifontein residents can donate is welcome, whether it is a pair of shoes, socks, a shirt or stationery. Every one of those donations will be of good use to the learners.” Some of the items residents can donate include school shoes, socks, shirts and stationery. There is also an option to a monetary donation of R150, which is enough to cover the cost of the supplies for one learner. “The BTD Back2School campaign is aimed at making a positive impact on our community youth and prevent kids from missing school days,” he says.

“Furthermore, with many families struggling to put food on the table, school supplies are usually not high up on the budget list. So we wanted to ease the burden on parents.” Since its inception in 2015, Abrahams says the campaign has managed to positively impact over 500 of its beneficiaries annually. “Our first campaign saw learners, who went to school either barefoot or without proper shoes, having shoes they became proud of.” Those who stand to benefit from the campaign are identified by teachers at their respective schools and added to a list which gives an idea of how much supply is needed. “The foundation then scrutinises the list to ensure that deserving learners do not lose out on benefitting from the campaign,” Abrahams explains. This year the campaign will focus on fewer learners than usual, who will all be given support throughout the year. V For more information visit www.btdf.co.za or email info@btdf.co.za.

Health services at clinics Residents are encouraged to continue accessing essential health services at the City of Cape Town’s clinics. According to a statement by the City’s health department, several overflow facilities opened in July last year to increase capacity at clinics and to ensure continuous services amid the Covid-19 pandemic. “We currently have 34 overflow facilities at our clinics and it is heartening to see residents continue to access our normal services and adhering to their health schedules, such as immunisation and antenatal and family planning services. While the current Covid-19 situation has impacted every aspect of our lives, and requires us to adhere to additional health protocols, there is still screening for HIV and TB, as well as medical checks for chronic conditions that need to be done and medication that needs to be

collected,” said the City’s Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien. By November last year there was a dramatic increase in the number of patients diagnosed with hypertension and diabetes, as well as the number of women who had cervical smear tests done (as opposed to June). The number of children under one year who were fully immunised remained stable at an average of 3 100 children per month. Badroodien said the overflow facilities became necessary to enable adherence to Covid-19 protocols and to continue general service delivery. “Some of these services are critical such as child immunisations and visits by clients with chronic conditions. Other services also continue and residents are encouraged to visit the clinics when they need to.”

SLICE OF LIFE

Beaches reopen: People across Cape Town took part in a peaceful protest action on Saturday 30 January against the government's decision to ban people from using beaches. Pictured are protestors at Bloubergstrand. Some of the people who took part in the protest went for a walk on the beach. Some even decided to go surfing. Police officials had their hands full and at least two people were arrested and taken to the police station where they were released with a warning. President Cyril Ramaphosa has since announced on Monday evening that a decline in the number of new cases meant the country could begin to ease some of the restrictions under level 3 lockdown. Public places such as beaches, dams, rivers, parks and public swimming pools has been reopened under strict health protocols. PHOTO: JACO MARAIS

afhaal. Toe ek my omstandighede aan

Uitstekende diens, baie dankie Jolene! JEANETTE VAN ROOY Bellville

Thanks to everyone who helped to save puppy “Firefighters rescue pup from sewer line” (TygerBurger 20 January) refers. I would like to commend and thank the people involved in giving this

pup a second chance at life in Ruyterwacht. Thank you to the family who heard the puppy’s distant cry from their toilet. They could’ve ignored

the crying for help but they acted on their faith to save the pup. Thank you to the fire crews from Epping and Goodwood. Thank you to

For virtually the whole week (25-30 January) the street lights in Cambridge Street, Goodwood were burning during the day. It could have been in surrounding streets as well, I don’t know but it wouldn’t surprise me. Previously the municipality’s excuse was that they are checking for dead street lights! Now on Sunday evening there are no street lights burning. How do they explain this? It is a laugh a minute! Over and over. ANTHONY SCHEEPERS Goodwood

Art fresco on promenade The photo of the art fresco at the Sea Point promenade (“Unity”, TygerBurger 27 January) refers. Shame, what a waste of labour and materials, since only seagulls and skydivers could get a view of it. I walked on the promenade last week and all I could see was an ugly looking lawn, brown silvery colour. No art work could be distinguished from a person’s view point. HANS Plattekloof 2

The new phase marks a switch-up in the development of Greenville, which was launched by Garden Cities, the Cape's oldest and largest residential developer, in 2016, and where up to now, 1 583 Breaking New Ground (BNG) homes have been occupied by families that qualify for full home subsidies. Garden Cities is currently setting up a show house for the new phase, where the sales team will be based, to assist walk-in clients from the local community and the surrounding areas. Following phases will be dependent on the need and affordability of the interested applicants. Greenville is an integrated development combining people from all walks of life, and is a prime example of a human settlement where provision is made across the spectrum for economic, affordable, and also middle to higher income homeowners. The bonded houses at Greenville offer excellent value, in terms of accommodation, erf size and fixtures and fittings. Among the items included in the sale are counter-top hobs in the kitchen and builtin ovens. A choice of carpeting or floor covering is also offered in the living areas and bedrooms. Bathrooms are well-equipped, with the further cost-effective advantage of gas geysers. All homes have off-street parking and walled back gardens. At Greenville, the core components of the facilities that are a usual part of a Garden Cities suburb, are well advanced. Sports and cultural facilities are also high on the agenda for joint ventures with specialists in this field. Open, planted and landscape spaces are a vital feature in the town planning. An artist's impression of a virtual walk through of a 3 bedroomed house is also available –Contact the sales team for the video.

2. Jy was eers ’n joernalis. Totdat daar die een dag in standerd nege (deesdae graad 11) ’n driedaagse joernalistiekkursus by my hoërskool in Mitchells Plain aangebied is.

Nadat ek my Wel, ek hoop regtig nasionale diploma so.
