This Youth Day will be special one DESIREÉ RORKE
A year of hard work and planning has culminated in a massive all-inclusive youth celebration of the kind Kraaifontein has never seen before.

“In the past Youth Day was celebrated by many different organisations at different places, which led to few people attending the events. But this year the Bergdal Subcouncil obtained some funds and decided to have one event for the Kraaifontein area,” said subcouncil chairman Grant Twigg adding that they intend to have this event annually as funds have already been made available for next year. “We are so excited with all the organisations that will form part of the day. We want the youth of today to appreciate what transpired many years ago that changed the landscape of our country and our education,” he said. The Youth Day festival will take place at Central Park Sport Field in Scottsdene, on Saturday 16 June from 09:00 to 15:00. “It is going to be a day of fun and activities for youth between the ages of seven and 16, with seven-a-side rugby, five-a-side soccer, recreational activities, talent shows, water and inflatable games, with food and refreshments on sale,” says Twigg. The objective of the day is to make the youth aware of their role and responsibilities in today’s life – to become aware of their purpose in society as well as the dan-

gers lurking. “Many of the line departments of the City of Cape Town, the police and organisations will get the opportunity to address the youth. It is our aim and vision to build a strong community by involving the youth in all aspects of community life. We want them to become rolemodels and create a better future for themselves,” says Twigg who will also be the keynote speaker at the event. According to Twigg many crime syndicates have moved to the Kraaifontein area and as subcouncil they needed to intervene, as there is not much for the young people to do in the area. “The police and the Community Policing Forum of the area also approached us and we decided to work together and address issues and concerns that affect everyone in the community. We also realise that many of the children come from poor areas and become involved in illegal activities and we want to show them that there are different and other ways that contribute to a positive outcome.” “The long-term objective will be to get the youth involved in several youth organisations as this event grows bigger each year.” Departments who will be involved in the festivities include Sports and Recreation, Water and Sanitation, Solid Waste (educational section), Health, (HIV tests will be available on the day) Disaster Management, SAPS and the Kraaifontein CPF and some local organisations.
