VERN JEFTHA : A ROLE MODEL FOR MANY

Man of the people missed CARINA ROUX

ondolences streamed in from across the Kuils River community after the passing of Vern Jeftha (60) on Friday 11 December. Jeftha, who had lived in Gersham for the past 30 years, was not only a role model to his three sons – Chad (35), Jason (33) and Lance (20) – but they and many others will remember him for his passion and willingness to assist within the community. His long-time friends Graham and Fay Daniels said he fell ill on Sunday 6 December and drove himself to Karl Bremer Hospital from where he was transferred to Tygerberg Hospital the next day. He tested positive for

Covid-19. Jeftha was very involved within the neighbourhood watch (NHW) structures. He was a founding member of the Gersham Sector 2 NHW and the interim chair at the time of his death. Sgt TP Hoffman, the police sector 2 manager, says Jeftha was a dedicated NHW member who ensured even the administration work was done ‘‘perfect and timeously”. Emlyn Whitman, secretary of Kuils River Sector 1 NHW, said Jeftha was his mentor and friend. “He was selfless, generous and had a boundless love for the community. Jeftha helped to start Sector 1 and many other NHWs, said Whitman. “About a month ago he saved the life of a lady with dementia who had gone missing.

He searched day and night and eventually found her unharmed in an alley next to Kuils River Primary. A few weeks ago he foiled and caught someone in the community who stole a bakkie load of bricks from Excelsior Park in Highbury. He made countless more contributions like these and kept our community safe.” Whitman says Jeftha also sourced donations of food and bread for the feeding schemes and soup kitchens. “Uncle Vern was our local hero and the foundation he set has left a lasting legacy.” Desiree Visagie, ward 11 councillor, said it was like her heart was ripped open when she heard the sad news. She knew Jeftha for many years through the NHW, but worked

closer with him since he became one of the ward safety officers at the beginning of the year. The safety officers are deployed as a ward initiative to be visible and vigilant to crime related issues and to report these and any service delivery issues, explained Visagie. She said they played a huge role during lockdown to ensure regulations were adhered to. Jeftha was always available to help, said Visagie, and was one of few who assisted throughout the hard lockdown period and up until his death. “He would do pickups of community donations of which we received hundreds and deliveries of the food hampers to those in need.
