Beaches in hotspot areas are still closed under Level 3 lockdown as Covid-19 infections increased over the past weeks, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Monday. A number of watersport enthusiasts have been arrested in recent weeks after defying lockdown regulations.

President Cyril Ramphosa announced an extended level 3 lockdown on Monday, with the second wave of Covid-19 pushing infections to an all time high.

Watersport professionals and residents in Milnerton and Bloubergstrand have raised questions last week after two kite surfers were arrested along Bloubergstrand beach

near Table View on New Year’s Day for defying the level 3 regulations.

It is alleged that the surfers refused to comply with police instructions to leave the beach. The residents have taken their concerns to social media and approached the legal system for assistance.

“A letter addressed to the Milnerton police station has been circulating on community groups on social media where it states that the beach is not closed for watersport professionals and they should be allowed to be in the sea,” says Gary Lock, a resident in the Sunset Beach area.

Police Minister Bheki Cele visited beaches in hotspot areas recently, to ensure adjusted alert level 3 compliance. On one of his visits, a surfer was arrested, causing havoc in the Langebaan community.

A Bloubergstrand resident, Ronelle Jansen, says that she understands why all beaches were closed during the festive season, but as everyone is making their way back to work, beaches should be open.

A video circulated on social media at the weekend of a police patrol vehicle stuck on Sunset Beach just as the tide started coming in.

A resident who shared the video on social media, said that empty beaches are patrolled instead of crime-riddled communities.

“I’ve spotted several officers on an empty beach. I’m sure there are other areas that needed the manpower at that time,” he said.

ear and infection numbers have spiked in Cape Town as the second wave of the Covid-19 virus crashed over the metropole.

The Western Cape Government has secured more oxygen, more staff and more beds for what they hoped would be the peak of the virus in Cape Town last week. Whether this is true is too soon to tell.

‘Very concerned’ In a press statement the City said it “remains very concerned about the high rate of Covid-19 infections in the metropole” and the suspected peak that was supposed to have taken place last week.

The City has called on citizens to remain vigilant during the second wave.

“It is common cause that the health sys­tem is under severe pressure amid increasing hospitalisations and persons requiring care.”

As things stood on Monday afternoon, the Western Cape had 240 262 active cases, 8 320 deaths, 187 971 recoveries,with the highest caseloads in the following sub-districts: Southern (Muizenberg, Tokai, Philippi), Tygerberg (Bellville, Goodwood and Elsies River), Western (Milnerton, Maitland, Atlantis) and Eastern (Eerste River and Kuils River).

The Northern subdistrict (which includes Durbanville and Kraaifontein) is also experiencing high infection numbers, but isn’t one of those with the highest number of infections.

week the public sector has 7 537 acute beds (excluding specialised beds at psychiatric hospitals, TB hospitals, Red Cross Hospital and the Mowbray Maternity Clinic). To battle the surge, they have made provision for 685 intermediate Covid-19 care beds, broken down as follows: . 336 beds at the Brackengate Hospital of Hope . 200 beds at the Mitchell’s Plain Hospital of Hope . 60 beds at the Freesia Ward at Lentegeur Hospital . 30 beds at Ward 99 in Lentegeur Hospital . 59 beds at the Sonstraal Hospital, which was prepared and opened after the first wave peak.

“The Western Cape Government has also made provision to make available 136 intermediate care beds, should the staffing be available, and the need arise.”

The provincial health department has erected tents at Khayelitsha, Wesfleur, Hospital of Hope at Brackengate, Mitchell’s Plain, Helderberg, Eerste River and Karl Bremer to help with admissions and dis­charges.

“As at 4 January, 1 019 health care workers across 97 institutions were infected, bringing the total staff infections since the start of the pandemic to 7 246. To combat the possible shortage, the department has offered 495 posts to staff, with 80 already assuming duty. This includes 36 doctors, 444 nurses and 3 allied health workers. A total of 322 medical interns have also been placed.

Extra oxygen Winde says the surge in hospitalisations has meant a much higher oxygen usage than was experienced in the first wave.

Public and private hospitals use a combined oxygen utilisation of 76.4 tons per day.

Given this, the government has made contingency plans to increase this to 95 tons per day. This includes five bulk oxygen tankers delivering oxygen this week.

“Not all of the burials are Covid-related, and the increase could in part be attributed to the recent long weekends, as some burials would have been postponed. However, it is a fact that there has been an increase in deaths attributed to the virus, and so the sad reality is that our cemeteries will be busier in the weeks ahead. Our staff have expressed concern about funerals and the lack of social distancing, in particular. While we understand that burying a loved one is a very emotional time for distraught families, we ask

that funeral-goers please be mindful at all times of the need to adhere to safety protocols,” added Badroodien.

Compliance “Based on feedback from staff, there a­p­pears to be an improvement in terms of compliance with the health and safety protocols by individuals as well as establishments.

But we are still not at 100%, and that is concerning,” says Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for health.

“The message has been very clear about what the public can do to mitigate the spread of Covid-19, and it boggles the mind that some people continue to disregard this critical guidance and advice. There is a great responsibility on each and every one of us to do what we can to fight this pandemic, and I urge the public to please get on board and help us to help them.”

The City urges residents to stay at home and only leave for essential shopping or health visits, or to go to work and to “abide by the current disaster management regulations which prohibit social gatherings; wear a mask at all times when in public and to maintain a distance of at least 1.5m from others at all times”.

Mental health The City has also called on residents to look after their mental health and to contact the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) if needed. . More than 100 New Year’s babies welcomed The Cape has welcomed 127 newborn babies on New Year’s Day this year born at public health facilities.

According to the provincial department of health 64 of the newborns are girls, and 63 boys.

The first baby, a boy, was born at 00:47 at the Mowbray Maternity Hospital to his mother Siphosethu Seti. The second baby, a girl, was born at Karl Bremer at 01:26 to her mother, Esethu Tyali, and the third, also a boy, was born at 01:53 at Tygerberg Hospital to his mother, Belinda Takawira.

Only one set of twins, two girls, were born at Tygerberg Hospital.

Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, Western Cape minister of health, congratulated the families of the newborns.

“I wish to congratulate all parents on the safe arrival of their newborns and wish them many years of happiness and good health.

“May you cherish the time together with your little ones, as parenthood is one of the best journeys,” says Mbombo.

Mbombo says a child’s health is most vulnerable during the first 1 000 days of its life.

“It is important to create a nurturing and healthy environment for your baby along with good nutrition, which can impact on a child’s ability to develop and learn. Ensure that your baby is fully immunized and follow the advice of health workers at your local clinic,” Mbombo says.

he Table Bay National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) rescue swimmers assis­ted emergency units after the body of a woman was discovered in the surfline in front of the Sea Point Swimming Pool on Sunday.

Marc de Vos, NSRI Table Bay station commander, said NSRI duty crews were placed on alert and the NSRI Bakoven sea rescue craft in the area at the time were diverted to investigate.

“At 10:53, Sunday, 10 January, NSRI Table Bay duty crew, NSRI Bakoven duty crew and NSRI Emergency Operations Centre were alerted to reports of a body in the surf­line in front of Sea Point Swimming Pool.

Unconfirmed reports suggested that a body of an unidentified female was on the beach and on investigation it was confirmed that the body of an unidentified female was still

in the surfline,” De Vos said.

The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services, emergency medical services, the City’s dive unit and community medics responded to join the City’s lifeguards and law enforcement officers who were on the scene.

“The body of an unidentified female was recovered onto the beach by police divers, who were assisted by Fire and Rescue Services divers, lifeguards and by NSRI rescue swimmers. The body of the female was taken into the care of WC Government Health Forensic Pathology Services,” the NSRI said in a statement.

The circumstances surrounding this incident still remains unclear and police have since opened an inquest docket.

The president also outlined the country’s vaccine strategy on Monday which he called “the largest and most complex logistical undertaking in our country’s history.” Around 40 million people in South Africa will have to be vaccinated to reach herd immunity.

Suspected drug dealer busted

Courageous volunteer inspires DESIRÉE RORKE “I have never seen so many ill people in my life. I pray and I have faith that we will overcome this virus,” says Beaunez Coerecius, a home-based and spiritual carer who volunteers at Brackengate Hospital of Hope.

By 7 January, the Covid-19 field hospital in Brackenfell had admitted 298 patients during the second wave of the pandemic and recorded nine deaths.

Coerecius herself has experienced the devastating effects of Covid-19 first-hand.

Soon after testing positive for the virus last winter, her husband had a stroke.

“I was working at Eerste River Hospital at the time when I got sick. I started snee­zing and the sister said I should get tested.

I received positive results, but I kept calm.

My husband fell ill and had a mini stroke, it was a hard and difficult time for my family. My husband survived his stroke and I have survived Covid-19. We are so grateful to be alive,” she says.

After her recovery, the healthcare worker heard about the opening of the Brackengate Hospital of Hope in July 2020.

While aware of the risks of volunteering during a pandemic, the 52-year-old says she could not sit back and do nothing.

“I got a second chance at life after having Covid-19. I decided that I wanted to make a difference and help others like me.

I have always had a passion for healthcare. I have provided palliative care support and HIV counselling in the past and assisted a local NGO with Covid-19 screen-

ing in February last year. I am also a trained home-based carer and was curious about the disease and how I could help.”

The Oudtshoorn local, who now lives in Strand, started working at Brackengate Hospital of Hope in August 2020.

Her day starts at 07:00. After praying and putting on her PPE, she gets her trolley ready and makes her way through the hospital’s wards, where she helps several ill patients every day. “I start by washing our patients, many patients are too ill to do this themselves. After they are washed, I feed them. I also assist the patients who need help with turning in bed as some are unable to. I ensure that I encourage our patients. I know from experience that having the virus can be challenging. It’s important for us to encourage them. Their families can’t physically be there with them … it’s really hard on them, so we take up that role of family to provide support.

“I massage their feet and rub their hands. I had a patient who called me ‘Mauritius’ which sounds like my surname. I remember coming into work and she’d say, ‘Oh, Mauritius, I heard your voice, I am so happy you are here’.”

Volunteering at the hospital has given Beaunez a sense of hope.

“As a healthcare worker, I am walking this journey with the patients and their families.

“The weekends often feel like they’re dragging when I am home, and I wonder about my patients, but I am happy when I return to find that they are still fighting

the virus with us, and I am always happy when they are reunited with their families.”

While she is often overcome by fatigue, she finds inspiration from the team at the hospital.

“The staff inspire me, from our doctors to our cleaners. They treat each other with so much respect and they treat our patients with love and care. And seeing patients recover and getting better also makes me happy. To do this job, you need to have empathy. You need to care about people. You need to be patient and kind.”

While she’s worked in the health sector for over 10 years, Beaunez describes the Covid-19 pandemic “like nothing I’ve ever seen before”.

“This virus is real and we need to remember that every day. Our hospitals have always had sick patients, but these days it feels like each family has someone or knows someone in hospital with Covid19.”

Her greatest wish is for the world to overcome this virus and she has called on the public to do their part.

“Remember, you can make a difference too. You can volunteer too. But there are other ways you can help us fight the virus.

Wear your mask, stay home when you are sick or have been tested and are awaiting your results. Remember to wash your hands regularly. Don’t attend parties or social gatherings and remember to keep a distance of 1.5m from others. All of us have a role to play to beat this virus, we can get through this. We want the pandemic to pass.Help us do this.”

A 27-year-old suspected drug dealer was arrested by the Bothasig police last month.

In a statement issued on Friday 18 December WO Jacques Mostert, police spokesperson, said one of their members who was busy conducting crime prevention patrols in the Bothasig and Edgemead areas, made the arrest.

“While doing a patrol in Bothasig, he noticed a man walking in De Grendel Drive. He also noticed that when the man saw the patrol vehicle approaching, he tried to hide something in the back of his pants.

“While searching the man, the police found 13 units of dagga. His explanation was that he was selling it as he did not work,” says Mostert.

Sgt Reginald Mars seized the dagga and subsequently arrested the suspect for dea­ling in drugs. The suspect has since appeared in the Goodwood magistrate’s court.

Trauma cases down as Covid infections rise DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

A

dramatic drop in trauma cases specifically related to car crashes and violence has ensured that hospitals in Cape Town could better manage the rising case load for Covid-19 patients over New Year celebrations.

Tygerberg Hospital reported only 12 trauma cases in its emergency centre on New Year’s Eve, while at Karl Bremer and Victoria hospitals no patients were admitted. Groote Schuur Hospital reported six patients.

Mere weeks before, the emergency centre at Tygerberg hospital was inundated and not coping with the volume of patients (“Tygerberg Hospital, buckling under the burden” TygerBurger 16 December).

Reliable sources revealed that the emergency room at the hospital was overrun by sick or injured patients over the first weekend of December.

Patients were sitting too close to each

other propped up on chairs or lying in beds in the waiting area.

According to the sources, there were simply too many patients, rendering the normal emergency triage procedures and Covid-19 screenings to isolate possible Covid patients defunct.

Hospital spokesperson Laticia Pienaar confirmed that there was not enough space in the emergency centre at the time and that patients in the waiting area were indeed sitting very close to each other.

“When we are inundated with masses of patients, space becomes a problem,” she said.

However, Pienaar denied that patients were not properly screened for Covid-19, nor that they were properly triaged as it is a medic-legal requirement.

“All patients are screened for Covid-19 as those screened positive need to move to another area specifically reserved for Covid patients,” she said.

The cause for the emergency room being overcrowded, she says, is the excessive

burden of trauma in the city, being motor vehicle accidents, assaults, alcohol related injuries, gunshots and stabbings.

“As the major problem in these situations is space, there is little that can be done.”

When the emergency room is congested, Pienaar says, Groote Schuur Hospital would be called on for assistance.

“When the platform is saturated the assistance is not always possible as other hospitals find themselves in similar situations.”

The current situation Overall Covid numbers in the province (as at 6 January) continue to rise with 224 262 confirmed infections of which 37 984 are active. In total 7 683 people have lost their lives.

By Sunday, 3 January, there were a total of 1 876 patients in public hospitals, and 1 314 in private facilities in the province.

“All our facilities remain under great pressure. Groote Schuur hospital current-

ly has 12 wards for Covid-19 patients and Tygerberg Hospital eight dedicated wards.

All district and regional hospitals are also under pressure to cope with very high numbers of Covid patients. Although there is a tapering off of positive test results, hospital admissions and reported deaths are still rising,” says Marika Champion, a health department spokesperson.

“Healthcare workers are very tired and trying their best to cope with the demand and difficult circumstances of the second wave,” says Dr Keith Cloete, head of health.

According to Cloete about 50% of nursing staff and doctors are currently affected, some 1 019 active cases and contingency plans are underway to recruit more hospital staff.

Cloete says the next two weeks are crucial to protect the health system as far as possible.

“Please ensure that you are cautious about observing social distancing, good ventilation and hygiene.”

Ons wil nie ’n area gaan help waar daar reeds hulp verleen is terwyl ander areas nog geen hulp ontvang het nie. Met die water vir Merweville het ons nie saamgegaan nie. Die Mans Vervoermaatskappy het vir ons die

water gratis vervoer na Merweville. Wat Oudtshoorn betref was ons so 20 voertuie.

Keep domestic workers safe

anksy samewerking tussen die WP Veteraan Trekker- & Enjinklub en die Stellenbosse boer Tielman Marais het boere in die droogtegeteisterde Loeriesfontein vandeesweek ’n hupstoot gekry om die nuwe jaar aan te pak.

Marais, ook ’n lid van die trekkerklub, het 900 hooibale geskenk wat hy Saterdag by die distrik se koöperasie gaan aflaai het. Die Stellenbosch-Landbougenootskap het die brandstof vir die rit geborg.

Die trekkerklub in samewerking met Eikestad Boeredienste en plaaslike sakemanne Pieter van Niekerk, Johan Horn en plaasbestuurder Jannie Gerber het ’n kontantskenking van R10 000 gemaak wat by die koöperasie inbetaal is vir boere om brandstof te koop om sodoende die skenking te kom afhaal.

“Boerdery vind plaas so ver as 80 km uit die distrik en sukkelende boere het nie geld vir diesel om die skenkings te kom oplaai nie,” sê Marais.

“Selfs ná die onlangse reënval in die gebied is die veld nog droog. Dit gaan meer as een goeie reënseisoen verg vir grasvelde om te herstel,” sê Hannes Rheeder, voorsitter van die klub.

Nog ’n inisiatief van die trekkerklub is tans onderweg.

“Ons beoog om in die komende weke soveel nie-bederfbare kos moontlik en toiletbenodigdhede in te samel vir die vroue en kinders op die plase,” sê Rheeder.

Daar is reeds R3 000 kontant ingesamel en lede van die gemeenskap wat kos en toiletbenodigdhede wil skenk kan so maak deur dit by die versamelpunt by Cape Auto Pump and Tractor in Acasiastraat, Kraaifontein Industria, af te laai.

Animal rescue needs a new home THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo Imagine Animal Dreams, a rescue, rehabilitation and re-home organisation for stray dogs and cats, is looking for a new home.

Currently based on a farm in Joostenbergvlakte, the four-legged friends could find themselves with no place to stay as the farm is up for sale.

Tracy Richardson from the non-profit organisation says the animals, which have been either neglected, harmed or starved, need a proper shelter where they would be rehabilitated properly.

Once the dogs have been rehabilitated and are healthy again, they are given up for adoption to families who will care for them.

She further says finding a new place to set up home for its over 90 dogs and over

10 cats is a matter of urgency because there is no knowledge of how long the organisation will run from its current location. “To our knowledge, we are required to vacate the premises as soon as the farm has been sold,” Richardson explains.

Furthermore, she says it does not matter where this new home is located.

“Right now finding a home is our priority. We would even be grateful if someone could offer us vacant land to lease because the comfort of the animals is what is important.”

The shelter is being run by its founder Cecilia Jacobs with the help of three caretakers who specialise in caring for the dogs.

All supplies for the shelter is funded by Jacobs with the help of different donors who often reach out to the shelter.

Nurses, carers thanked for their sacrifice: Nursing staff and carers at the George and Annie Starck Homes in Parow were recently thanked for their selfless sacrifice towards the elderly. Many of the staff members slept in during the Covid-19 lockdown, the home says. “This was a selfless sacrifice only done by those who care, have compassion and are committed to those they care for. For weeks you sacrificed not seeing your loved ones. Your reward was that you did not have a single resident who became infected with Covid-19. It was all worth it,” reads part of a letter sent out to the staff by chair Prof Ethelwynn Stellenberg. Old Mutual also handed out gifts to the staff as a token of their appreciation. Domestic staff falling victim to criminals while at work in private homes is common. There have been many cases of gardeners robbed while working outside or domestic workers conned into opening the gate for “meter readers” and then being tied up and assaulted before the home is ransacked.

Charnel Hattingh, head of marketing and communications for Fidelity ADT, confirms the security provider deals with these types of incidents across their n­a­tional footprint on a daily basis. “Domestic staff are often the only people on a property during the day, sometimes even over extended holiday periods. They shoulder a lot of responsibility to protect the property and potentially children or the elderly who may be in their care.

Criminals quickly pick up on routines and know how to con their way onto properties where domestic workers are busy with their tasks. It is imperative that homeowners equip their staff with the knowledge and tools they need to protect themselves and those in their care,” says Hattingh.

Hattingh highlights that domestic staff are now eligible for workers’ compensa­tion if they are injured on your property.

He offers some common-sense security tips to keep people in your household safe: . Never open the gate to strangers, no matter what their story is. . Activate garden beams during the day. . Proper perimeter protection is imperative – palisade fencing or walling and an automated gate are the best options. Electric fencing is a valuable addition to these. . Domestic staff/others must carry remote panic buttons on them at all times and know where the mounted panic buttons are in the house. . Keep security gates locked and the keys removed. . Never make it obvious you are away on holiday. It must look like “business as usual” at home, with lights being switched on regularly, blinds closed and security systems armed. . Discourage domestic staff/anyone else regularly around your family from talking about your routines and plans to other people. . Everyone must know who to contact in an emergency and what procedures to follow when activating a panic to your private security company. . Be vigilant at all times, inside and out­side the home.

Koeberg Unit 1 offline for now Koeberg Unit 1 has been taken offline for repairs last week after an increasing leak rate was observed on one of three steam generators in Unit 1.

This was confirmed by other plant mea­surement readings. Although the leak rate was well within the safety limits, a conservative decision was made to take Koeberg Unit 1 offline for repairs, Eskom said in a statement.

“During this period the unit will also undergo its routine maintenance and refuelling, which was originally scheduled to start during February. The unit is expected to re-

turn to service during May. The steam generator is a tubular heat exchanger which mechanically dries the steam produced during the nuclear power generation process. Shutting down the plant takes several hours, and the process is still underway. Once shut down, fuel will be unloaded from the reactor core to enable maintenance activities to be conducted, and the cause of the increased leak rate to be addressed,” the statement reads.

According to Eskom, there is no risk to plant, personnel, or the environment. Unit 2 continues to safely operate at full power.

Free emergency contraception The provincial health department and its partners are reminding the public that emergency contraception is free at all primary health care facilities at selected community health centres in the Cape Metro.

The emergency contraception is available on weekdays during working hours, as well as after-hours and on weekends.

“Sexually active women should take the emergency contraception (the morning after pill) option should they wish to prevent an unplanned pregnancy.

Women can also access other forms of contraception at local public health facilities during the holiday period and beyond,” the department said in a statement.

Emergency contraception can be used as an emergency pill by women who forget to take their birth control pills, have a condom break during intercourse, or have unprotected sex for other reasons (including victims of sexual assault).

It is a method of birth control to be used occasionally, in specific unexpected or emergency situations, not as a primary form of birth control.

According to Edna Arends, deputy dire­c­tor of Women’s Health at the department, emergency contraception does not protect against further unprotected sexual intercourse but rather encourages a suitable contraceptive method to be used by women. “A woman does not need a physical exam or any lab tests to get emergency contraception at our health facilities. She should take it as soon as possible after unprotected sex. It is most effective within the first day of unprotected sex, but it can work up to five days (120 hours) later. Women can take emergency contraception at any time during their menstrual cycle,” Arends said.

Women who use emergency contraception do not need to see a health worker after ta­king it.

Club rugby holding on to a glimmer of hope W

estern Province Club Rugby hopes 2021 will provide the opportunity to kickstart the amateur game.

Manager of WP Amateur Rugby Danny Jones extended his well wishes for the new year, while reflecting on the year that was.

“Last year has certainly been a challenging year for WP Club Rugby, but even though it has been a difficult year particularly with no fixtures the year has been full of highlights as we saw our clubs step up to the plate,” he says. Jones adds that by March last year just over 1 600 matches had been scheduled for the season with more to come, including the play-offs which culminate at Newlands, the annual WP Club Rugby Sevens and the women’s club rugby division.

“We started the year in anticipation of a fantastic season ahead with many clubs playing pre-season friendlies early in 2020.

At the time we envisaged an exciting year ahead for club rugby as we could see the

standard of rugby across all the leagues and divisions had kept improving. So, 2019 had been an exciting year for WP Club Rugby as we saw several clubs go toe-to-toe with very small margins and it was clear our clubs were ready to build on this,” said Jones.

He had hoped that on the back of steady improvement in the standard of rugby, not just on the field, further developments could take shape with the introduction of additional technology in amateur structures, but it was not to be.“Sadly the season ahead never materialised as Covid dealt a devastating blow to club rugby. The impact was severe not only from a fixture point of view but also to all the periphery benefits the game of rugby brings to our rugby community.

“Covid not only impacted our fixtures but also the micro economy of club rugby. Clubs lost gate takings, kiosk sales, player and coaching fees and membership subs among the many other benefits physical events

bring to a club rugby structure. For many communities who depend on their local rugby club, the loss of regular club rugby activities has been severe,” he adds.

However, Jones lauded clubs for keeping “the spirit of club rugby” alive.

“It was evident early in lockdown that our club structures were no strangers to challenges and were naturally geared to use their organised club rugby structures to support their players and the communities they serve.Witnessing our club structures galvanise their management and players into support units which stretched far beyond the eighty minutes between the white lines was heart-warming. Using the leadership skills of club rugby we saw our clubs move into action without hesitation to support their players and their local communities in need,” explains Jones.

Many clubs started outreach projects which included feeding schemes and fun-

draising. Clubs reached out to local sponsors, past players and in many cases their personal funds to support their members and families during very difficult times.

“We knew the loss of physical social interaction had a tremendous impact on our members as we witnessed the joy from our members to see each other face to face when we had our first group engagement. This saw just over 80 clubs arrive at Newlands to collect more than one thousand food parcels courtesy of our partnership with NGO United Way,” he says.

These parcels would each feed a family of six for a month. “As we now reflect on 2020 we note the terrible impact Covid has had on our members, but we also note the strength of WP Club Rugby and the wonderful gift our clubs bring to society through the world of rugby as they deliver strength, hope and opportunity to their members and the communities they serve.

Amateur cricket season delayed

Netball South Africa has decided to halt all activity amidst the rise in Covid cases across the country in recent weeks.

Netball activities ceased due to Covid-19 Since the start of 2021, South Africa has seen a resurgence in Covid-19 cases, more people seem to be contracting the virus and a lot more seem to be losing their lives in this pandemic.

Cases have been increasing daily and now these numbers have become names of people we all know and are connected to.

Netball South Africa president, Cecilia Molokwane, and her executive committee have taken a unanimous decision to suspend all planned netball activities until further notice with immediate effect from Friday 8 January.

In all, the u.21 training camp which was

scheduled for Monday 11 January - Friday 15 January, the SPAR Challenge in Cape Town between Wednesday 20 January and Wednesday 27 January 2021 as well as the men’s national championships have all been put on ice.

“As the country continues to see Covid19 numbers rising, it is very scary seeing what is going on around us. We see numbers rising and these numbers are names of people that we know. As an executive, it was very important for us to take a decision to postpone all our planned activities until further notice. We will continue to take lead from government and consult all

relevant stakeholders as we take all the much needed steps to ensure that we protect lives,” said Molokwane.

She adds that she, along with Netball South Africa’s events team, will continue to be in consultation with the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture as well as the Department of Health and will monitor the situation with the view of taking the best decision for the sport. “I think it is also important that we take this time and continue to use this moment to educate our people about the importance of adhering to health regulations and protocols around Covid,” concluded Molokwane.

Following plans to restart local amateur cricket, Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed on Wednesday 6 January that the return of all forms of amateur cricket has been delayed until Monday 1 February.

Initially, CSA had plotted a plan for a return to play for provincial cricket, clubs, schools and mini-cricket, which would have commenced during the first week of January, but due to the current national level 3 lockdown regulations due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, no amateur cricket will be possible for the rest of the month.

The senior provincial men’s season had been due to get underway last week with the start of the 3-day Provincial Cup with five matches scheduled across the country, with Western Province initially scheduled to play Eastern Province at Newlands on Thursday 14 January.

Teams were also scheduled to compete in the opening round of the CSA Provincial One-Day Cup, which was due to kick off on Sunday 10 January. A bumper weekend of cricket awaited the provincial women’s teams, with both the 50-over and T20 competitions earmarked for Saturday 9 January and Sunday 10 January respectively.

Following the success of the recent women’s T20 Super League, which was held in Cape Town in December, provincial teams had their sights set on building on that momentum in the CSA women’s Provincial T20 tournament. Instead, they will continue to practise at their training grounds.

“Cricket South Africa and its members are exercising their duty of care by adjusting the initial timeframe for the resumption of the game at this level. While we appreciate the eagerness of our buddying cricketers to play, we are unfortunately constrained by the reality of the Covid-19 pandemic that is currently gripping the country, from which cricket is not spared,” said acting head of Cricket Pathways Edward Khoza.

Die wedstryd is op die Goodwood-skouterrein, waar GrandWest nou is, gespeel en ondersteuners van die Proteas het van heinde en ver gereis om die wedstryd by te woon.

Die Leeus het skoonskip op die toer gemaak en die Proteas met 36-6 geklop.

Mawson se ander twee spanmaats wat nog duskant die graf is, en in die pak gesak het, is die twee voormalige Protea-kapteins Dougie Dyers van Belhar en Jack Juries van Groot-Brakrivier.

“Voor die Proteas gekies kon word vir die geskiedkundige wedstryd, is proewe by SAKK in Faure gehou. Ons was drie spelers van Blue Birds-rugbyklub wat gekies is en die ander twee was Tommy Petersen en Clive Adams. Die SAKK-rugbyveld was omring met weermagtente wat as kleedkamers gedien het en ek is as die kaptein en agtsteman van die George Leith-span aangewys.

“Al wat ek in my spanpraatjie gesê het, was dat elkeen ’n kans het om die Proteas te haal, maar dat ek verwag elkeen sou net sy beste gee,” sê Mawson.

In die tweede wedstryd het hy teen Juries gespeel en omdat hulle al drie keer teen mekaar in die Silwerbekerkompetisie – Blue Birds teen Goodhopes van Groot-Brakrivier

– gespeel het, het hy geweet wat Juries na ’n span bring. Hy het in die tweede wedstryd drie drieë gedruk en die keurders het hom van die veld gehaal en wou weet of hy al flank gespeel het.

“Flank was nie ’n onbekende posisie nie, maar ek het vir my klub agtsteman gespeel en as die keurders my nou op flank wou in-

span, het ek daar ook 100% gegee. Na afloop van die tweede wedstryd is ek en Juries albei gesê dat ons deelname verby is, maar dat ons moet wag tot die span aangekondig word.

Nadat die keurders koppe bymekaar gesit het in die offisiere-menasie in die basis, het Hennieboy Langenhoven, wedstrydsekretaris van die WP-Unie, langs my kom staan en my geluk gewens, want ek, Charlie Davids en Hannes Meyers was die nuwelinge in die Proteas.

“Ons moes toe twee weke verlof neem by ons werk om die oefenkamp by te woon ter voorbereiding vir die wedstryd. Toe ons by die kamp aanmeld, is ons verwelkom deur Springbokke soos Morne du Plessis, Chris en Agie Koch. Laasgenoemdes sou help met die fiksheid van die spelers. Dit was hel, want ons het met houtpale deur die bosse in die basis gehardloop oor die sandduine, waar Khayelitsha nou is, en dan as ons terug is in die basis, kontakoefeninge met motorbande gedoen. Ons het ook een dag die Maties se oefenkamp, Koedoekamp, onder bevel van Dok Danie Craven en sy hond, Bliksem, bygewoon, waar ’n deel van die veld natgespuit word en jy dan teen ’n trekker moes skrum, want daar was nog nie skrummasjiene nie. Die doel van die skrummery teen die trekker was om te kyk hoe sterk jy is.”
