eaches in hotspot areas in the country remain closed to the public under level 3 lockdown. President Cyril Ramphosa announced an extended level 3 lockdown on Monday, with the second wave of Covid-19 pushing infections to an all time high. Watersport professionals and residents in Milnerton and Bloubergstrand have raised questions last week after two kite surfers were arrested along Bloubergstrand beach
near Table View on New Year’s Day for defying the level 3 regulations. It is alleged that the surfers refused to comply with police instructions to leave the beach. The residents have taken their concerns to social media and approached the legal system for assistance. “A letter addressed to the Milnerton police station has been circulating on community groups on social media where it states that the beach is not closed for watersport professionals and they should be allowed to be in the sea,” says Gary Lock, a resident in the Sunset Beach area.
Police Minister Bheki Cele visited beaches in hotspot areas recently, to ensure adjusted alert level 3 compliance. On one of his visits, a surfer was arrested, causing havoc in the Langebaan community. A Bloubergstrand resident, Ronelle Jansen, says that she understands why all beaches were closed during the festive season, but as everyone is making their way back to work, beaches should be open. “I took my dogs to the beach for their daily exercises and beaches should be allowed open during specific times. A video circulated on social media at the weekend of a police patrol vehicle stuck on Sunset Beach just as the tide started coming in. A resident who shared the video on social media, said that empty beaches are patrolled instead of crime-riddled communities. “I’ve spotted several officers on an empty beach.
