KLIPKOP DUMP: CHURCHGOERS THREATENED
Dangers in alley RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

espite a huge sign at the entrance to a thoroughfare in Parow which reads “Littering and dumping are illegal”, frequent dumping still takes place at the spot from time to time, a resident and regular pedestrian who uses this passage, complained recently. Raymond Hendricks, a senior citizen and resident from Northway Street in Ravensmead, told TygerBurger he fears mostly for the safety of his fellow congregants who have to make use of the thoroughfare on a Sunday morning in order to get to the Marter Dei Catholic Church in Riley Street, Klipkop in Parow. The thoroughfare is also used by people who walk from Ravensmead to the Tygerberg train station and to Parow. “The dumping is something that occurs regularly. People dump here illegally. “We do not know who they are,” Hendricks told the newspaper at the site last week. He sent TygerBurger a photo of the dumping in which several black bags can be seen strewn along the boundary wall of the thoroughfare. One pedestrian told TygerBurger at the scene they once saw a dead dog lying in the thoroughfare, which is also covered in graffiti. Hendricks says the passage gets cleaned from time to time by the council, but that the dumping always continues. “We have informed the ward councillor about this as well. “At one point they were going to install CCTV cameras, but I am not sure if that ever happened,” he says. He claims that the mayor of Cape Town, Dan Plato, resides nearby and that the City of Cape Town has already been notified about the situation at the thoroughfare. Last week Xanthea Limberg, Mayco mem-

ber for water and waste, told the newspaper that on receipt of the journalist’s query, a team had been dispatched to clear the area which is now clean. “The City also commits to inspecting the
area on a weekly basis going forward and providing cleansing services when necessary,” Limberg says. Hendricks says his main concern is for the elderly church members.
He claims the thoroughfare is also not safe. “My own grandson was robbed of his shoes here recently,” he says. V To page 2
