Return of ‘The R5 meals’ The Shoprite group has re-introduced its R5 deli meals having subsidised more than 150 million meals since inception in 2017. The group has further subsidised its 600g in-house baked bread which remains at R4.99 since 2016. Stores sold 63 million R4.99 bread loaves in the past financial year. The group says with the effects of the pandemic on unemployment, increased hunger and food insecurity plagues vulnerable communities. The meal is the group’s effort to make sure that someone with just R5 in their pocket can afford to eat a hot meal.

ege jaar gelede was Verna Cloete (42) taamlik sorgvry.

City looks at electricity dilemma BRENDEN RUITER @ruitervaniewind

T

he City of Cape Town will be convening meetings with relevant stakeholders to find lasting solutions for the demands by residents from the Sophia Town informal settlement close to Blackheath. TygerBurger reported earlier this year how residents from nearby Highbury Park are bumping heads with residents of Sophia Town because of illegal electricity connections. It went so far that violent riots took place. After months of going back and forth between the different parties, the City released a statement last week on the way forward. “The City of Cape Town’s electrification programme management department submit-

No formal response was received from the owners, but emails from them indicated that they do not support electrification on their properties. “Without the approval of the landowners, the settlement cannot be serviced,” reads the statement, credited to the City’s Mayco member for energy and climate change, Phindile Maxiti. kom supply area. A recent count conducted yielded a total of 511 informal dwellings in Sophia Town. This count and personal information of the occupants recorded will be verified by means of a follow-up enumeration to be done by the City’s informal settlements management officiaelels, with the support of the current committee. “The major dilemma faced in terms of the continuous overload of Eskom’s current infrastructure in supplying power to the Sunbird Park and Hagley formal areas is as a result of these 511 households that are illegally drawing power from the existing Eskom network. Electrification to these informal dwellers will therefore not only stop the network overload but will also illuminate the safety risk that exists due to these illegal connections – not to mention the dam-

age caused by vandalism,’’ says Maxiti. Mayco member for urban management, Grant Twigg, says the City, through its urban management directorate, is convening a series of meetings with all stakeholders to find a lasting solution that will not only assist in the development of the area, but also put less strain on the existing resources. “Information sessions will also be conducted with the community and committee on future plans through our subcouncils and public participation unit,” says Twigg. Rudie Cookson, a community leader from Highbury Park, says he welcomes the development, but he has heard it all before. “Meetings upon meetings and nothing is being done. We as law-abiding citizens, who pay our taxes, just want the illegal connections to stop,” says Cookson.

Be wary while shopping on BF NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk The safest way of spending money during Black Friday is by shopping online, a security expert says. Hennie Groenewald, spokesperson of Bassett Security, says this would help curb the spread of Covid-19. Yet, there’s definitely been a rise in the families and shoppers who are out and about, says Charnel Hattingh, head of marketing and communications for Fidelity Services Group. Unfortunately the rejuvenation of in-person shopping also means that criminals have returned, waiting for easy pickings.

Reasons and tips Hattingh and Groenewald give the following reasons for increased crime and tips to prevent it: . “There are a lot of people in one area which makes it easy for them to disappear into the crowd once they have stolen your handbag or shoplifted,” Hattingh says. . “Women with children are often distracted,” Hattingh says. Once they turn away from their trolleys with their handbags, albeit for only two seconds, a criminal has enough time to pounce. . Criminals blend in. “Women use children to steal cellphones, handbags and the likes, especially in restaurants where they are ‘innocently’ waiting to be served,” Hattingh says. After committing the crime they easily join the busy crowd and blend in. . There are many ATM machines where the “good Samaritans” who offer to help when the ATM is suddenly giving trouble are actually helping themselves to your bank card and pin. “Before you know it, thousands could be withdrawn from your account,” Hattingh says. . “Parking areas are large, offering criminals a chance to sit in a car and identify their next target without looking suspicious. . It is easy to sit in a car and remote jam

cars. Always check your car is in fact locked before walking away. Groenewald emphasises this means physically feeling the car’s door with your hand. . It is easy to follow someone who is going to deposit or withdraw a large amount of money at a bank in a mall without them realising it. . Hattingh says shoppers are generally careless with their valuables – “handbags hung over chairs at restaurants, cellphones on the table, etc. A criminal will not hesitate to grab your belongings and be gone in a matter of seconds”. Groenewald says shoppers should also keep valuables in cars out of sight, or better, out of the car. Don’t walk with your cellphone in your bag or in your pocket, he adds. . According to Hattingh most people don’t notice what’s going on around them. “Always take note of your surroundings, especially when you are walking back to your car. Check where the car guard or a security guard is and signal for help immediately if you are suddenly approached by a stranger.” Groenwald says to keep an eye out for any suspicious vehicles parked close to your car – this can help prevent a robbery. . Another disturbing trend is when criminals dress up as beggars or hawkers as people are used to them, Hattingh explains. “Criminals are masters of disguise and will use any means possible to get what they want. Do not speak to strangers and if anyone is making you feel uncomfortable, go to a security guard and report them.” . Masks are a problem. As everyone, including criminals, need to wear a mask, be extra cautious about the people around you. . Groenewald says if you need to go out, try to do all your shopping at once and don’t spread out your shopping spree over multiple days and trips. This will reduce the number of times you may encounter criminals. Hattingh says: “Remain on guard at all times while shopping, be aware of who is around you and especially keep your children and valuables safe.”

Public places vandalised in Delft T

he City of Cape Town strongly condemns the violent protests that occurred in Delft last week Thursday. This after the City prevented the attempted illegal occupation of City projects, among others. This led to some road closures such as the N2. “The Hague Recreation Centre in Delft was vandalised for the third time in four weeks. This time 11 windows were broken, two doors burned and a large number of items stolen. “It is absolutely unacceptable that the City’s members of staff, such as essential health workers, are injured and intimidated and that our community facilities are destroyed. “We have seen this happening across the metro. “It leaves our vulnerable communities more vulnerable and robs our communities of services and facilities,” says the City’s Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien. According to Badroodien, the City will do everything in its power to safeguard its projects, programmes, services and communities at large from illegal occupations. “It is unacceptable that the Delft Community Centre has been damaged and vandalised by the protesters.

“City health and community services staff, among others, have also been injured. “A planned sod-turning of a new housing project planned had to be cancelled due to the violent protests. Attempts to invade the City’s The Hague project, where units were handed over and the land earmarked for a new housing project in the area, sparked the prevention of unlawful occupation operations that took place. “The City reiterates its position that unlawful occupation hurts us all. “While we respect the right of people to protest peacefully, the City of Cape Town will not tolerate intimidation, violence and the destruction of public and private property and the infringements of rights of law abiding residents in general. “As a precaution, some services were temporarily withdrawn from the area,” says Badroodien. The City’s Mayco member for human settlements, Malusi Booi, says illegal occupations have a very negative impact on planned projects, community facilities, basic services, beneficiaries of housing projects and infrastructure expansion and maintenance. “As it is, we have about R1,3 billion of human settlements projects that are under threat.

“Unlawful occupation also severely negatively impacts those who have illegally occupied land. “Those who occupy land illegally knowing there are no services do so at their own risk. “The City has numerous court orders in place in the Delft area, as is the case across the metro, as it tries to safeguard projects, services and programmes from unlawful occupation. “The City will continue to do everything in its power to prevent the illegal occupation of land, which is a criminal act and which hurts us all,” says Booi. Booi also advises residents not to pay ‘rental’ money to ‘landlords’ who are ‘renting’ out invaded sites and also not to ‘buy’ invaded sites from syndicate operators who have invaded land. “It must be noted that sites with services are of course ‘rented’ out or ‘sold’ at a premium. “There are many intricate levels to the unlawful land occupation situation. Some residents have also been illegally evicted by their landlords which is not allowed under the national crisis regulations. “Any person who has been evicted by their landlord must make a case at their local police as this is against the Covid-19 regulations in place,” says Booi.

Delft CPF meeting on 5 December The Delft Community Policing Forum (CPF) will be hosting its general meeting on Saturday 5 December at 10:00 at The Hague High School. Elections were meant to have taken place in March but were postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. All organisations are advised to apply or renew with the CPF to be eligible to vote at the meeting for the election of the executive committee. Covid-19 regulations will be followed. No mask no entry. Application are available in the community service centre at the police station. All application forms must be handed in today (Wednesday 25 November). Application forms to join and renew can be obtained from Capt John J Bartlett and he can be contacted on 082 302 8192 or delftcomm@saps.gov.za.

Attempted murder on the up in province DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierore Attempted murder cases in the Western Cape have surged upwards with 9% with 1 097 cases between July and September 2020, according to the second quarterly crime statistics released by the South African Police Service. The numbers contained are compared in percentile to the same quarter in the previous year. Kraaifontein (59), Elsies River (39), Delft, (35) and Mfuleni (32) all feature in the national top 30 police precincts for this crime. With 752 incidents, house robberies saw an increase of 8.4% with 58 cases more than in the same quarter last year.

Again Kraaifontein (41), Delft (38) and Mfuleni (30) reached the top 30 list for this crime countrywide. Truck hijackings too saw an increase of 33.3% with 12 more incidents bringing the total for the quarter to 48; and carjackings a slight decrease of 3.3% with 838 incidents. Delft (59) and Philippi East (59) were both listed in the top 30. The murder rate saw a slight decline of 0.9% with 1 013 murders in the province. Both Delft (57) and Kraaifontein (38) topped the red list, with a 31% decline in Delft, but a 58% increase in Kraaifontein. House robberies increased by 8.4% with 752 cases and break-ins declined by 10% with 2 578 cases.

Minister for community safety in the province Albert Fritz, said a five-year analysis shows that provincially murder cases increased by 25.7% (207) from 806 in 2016/17 to 1 013 in quarter 2 of 2020/21 financial year whilst nationally it increased by 4.2% (207), from 4 900 in quarter 2 of 2016/17 to 5 107 for the same period. However, there was a decrease in the last two years – owing largely to the Operation Lockdown in gang affected precincts in 2019 and the Covid lockdown in 2020. Additionally, the top 10 police stations in the province accounted for 48.5% of murders in the second quarter of 2020/21 and murders in these 10 stations increased by 2.1%.

Bontas mourn another innocent death TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07

T

he community of Bonteheuwel is reeling in shock after learning that the man accused of murdering 31-year-old Lauren Dryden is apparently a convicted killer. The mother of two was murdered after being robbed at her workplace in Kinghall Avenue, Epping, on Friday 20 November. She had finished her nightshift duty and while waiting for an e-hailing taxi she was attacked. Many residents took to Facebook after a photo of the accused was posted on The Official Bonteheuwel Group page. The 36-year-old man appeared in the Bishop Lavis magistrate’s court on Monday 23 November. Ward 50 councillor, Angus McKenzie said

the police and the justice system failed the community by releasing a convicted murderer. “It is quite clear that the community at large is highly frustrated with the gender violence and the murder. There are two key issues. Gender based violence must stop. We can’t continue to see the abuse of women and children. Just last week an eight-month-old baby also from Bonteheuwel was murdered allegedly by his parents. On Friday 20 November, Lauren Dryden was robbed and murdered for a cellphone. “The second issue which has really frustrated the community is the fact that the poor work done by the police, as well as the broken criminal justice system. The accused in Lauren’s case has been arrested on numerous other occasions. It’s alleged that he has committed various other murders and

he has found himself falling through the cracks of a broken criminal justice system.” McKenzie met with Dryden just days before she was murdered. “She came and registered for the City of Cape Town and German Funding Corporation Covid-19 Relief fund for her two little children. On Friday 20 November that funding was approved. Sadly she won’t be able to spend that money on her children. I will however ensure that the funding relief makes it’s way to her children.” Provincial police spokesperson, Capt FC van Wyk said she was murdered at 06:09. “A murder case was registered for investigation. Circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting incident are under investigation.” The case has been postponed to Monday 30 November for bail information. The accused has been remanded in custody.

Lauren Braiden (31) was gunned down outside her workplace in Epping in the early hours of Friday 20 November.

Screening concerns at hospital RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

T

ygerberg Hospital confirmed that it was made aware of a complaint that screening for Covid-19 symptoms are apparently not conducted at one of its entrances. TygerBurger recently received a complaint from a resident in Kraaifontein, informing the newspaper about the matter. The resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, suffers from cancer and visits the hospital’s cancer unit at the Gene Louw Building regularly for check-ups. Her last visit was on Friday 6 October. “I got there at 05:45 and at the entrance

there was nobody on duty to screen patients,” the resident says. She brought this to the attention of some of the staff, but claims that it seemed no one was bothered by it. “How would they know if infected persons are entering the facility? And with a warning of a second wave, is this not negligence on the part of the hospital? Are cancer patients not also high risk? At all the other entrances temperatures are taken, but not at the cancer unit.” The patient says she has also tried calling the hospital to lodge a complaint, but claims no one answers the phone. Laticia Pienaar, hospital spokesperson, confirmed last week that the hospital had been made aware of the matter and ex-

plained the current procedures taken at the facility. “At the peak of the pandemic, screening was done by staff members at the Gene Louw Building, but when the numbers were declining and visitation was still restricted, the staff members were withdrawn to go back to their clinical areas. “The screening was left to be done by the security guards but there were challenges in that screening is not the core function of the security guard. We are in a process of securing the services of the volunteers to assist with screening at the entrances,” Pienaar says. The 68-year-old patient says she is now wary of going for her next check-up on Tues-

day 1 December. “I have breast cancer, as well as multiple myeloma so my immune system is heavily compromised. I do not know if anyone in authority has been made aware of this nonscreening,” the patient says. Pienaar however explained that the current screening process for patients who visit the cancer facility is done on a booking system. “When they arrive at the unit, they must be checked for the wearing of masks, and then screened for temperature and hand sanitiser applied at the main entrance. When they get to their specific clinics, they must be fully screened for temperature and symptoms by the clinical staff,” Pienaar explains.

November is prematurity awareness month I

n support of World Prematurity Awareness Month in November, neonatal wards at Tygerberg Hospital will be draped in purple for premature babies, or preemies, this month. The colour purple represents sensitivity and exceptionality, which is fitting for this year’s World Prematurity Day celebrated on 17 November. This year’s theme is “Together for babies born too soon – caring for the future.” The idea of World Prematurity Day was born on 17 November 2008 when proud parents welcomed their healthy baby girl into the world after having lost

triplets due to pre-term birth, a statement by the Western Cape department of health reads. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) one out of 10 babies is born prematurely. “Preemies have not grown and developed as much as they should have before birth. A baby born three weeks or more before the due date is called premature. It can happen to everyone, irrespective of where we live, our culture or socioeconomic status,” the statement reads. Preemie Day seeks to raise awareness of the challenges and burden of preterm birth globally. Many preemies face serious life-

long health challenges. “It is also a time to reflect on the amazing advances that have been made to improve the outcomes of these tiny human beings and to celebrate the healthcare workers and parents that care for them. “These little ones need loads of love and support and World Prematurity Day is a chance to show it, the statement reads. The public is encouraged to drape a purple ribbon, T-shirt, dress or trousers and join the hospital in celebrating the month. They are also encouraged to share their photographs on Facebook by tagging the Western Cape government health’s page.

Parcels helps patients to stay safer The provincial health department’s chronic dispensary unit (CDU) in Parow has improved their services in order to help reduce the risks of chronic patients contracting Covid-19. They have done so by preparing their medicine parcels for home delivery and collection at designated collection points at healthcare facilities. This was done throughout the national lockdown. “More than 84 000 additional stable chronic patients have been registered for this service since the start of lockdown, and the CDU has ramped up its capacity to more than keep pace with this increased demand,” says Ludo Tandt, general manager of the CDU. The CDU, a contract between the department and Medipost Pharmacy, was already dispensing an average of 16 500 to 18 500 parcels per day prior to the pandemic, however the daily average is now up to 32 000 parcels per day. From the start of 2020 to the end of September, 3.8 million medicine parcels were dispensed from the CDU. “With the advent of Covid-19 there was a need to limit opportunities for this highly infectious viral illness to spread, especially among individuals with pre-existing health conditions, while still

ensuring patients have access to their prescribed chronic treatment,” says Kim Lowernherz, head of the department. The department established a system to ensure patients living with a stable chronic health condition could receive their medicine parcels via home delivery, with over 100 000 parcels delivered safely and conveniently to patients in their own homes since the start of lockdown. “Through existing community-focused health structures, the medicine parcels dispensed by the CDU are disseminated through partner non-profit organisations to community health workers, who then deliver the parcels to patients.” The CDU’s medicine dispensary system was specially designed to fulfil the specific and stringent requirements of the department for preparing and dispatching large volumes of medicine parcels each month. “These medicine parcels are a vital tool in the provision of community based primary care, bringing healthcare services closer to patients so that they are more convenient and accessible,” says Noel Guliwe, chief executive of the Medipost Holdings group. The group operates the CDU on behalf of the health department.

The chronic dispensary unit is an advanced and highly specialised automated chronic medicine dispensing, sorting and parcel assembly line in Parow. It is a contract between the Western Cape government’s Department of Health and Medipost Pharmacy. Since the beginning of 2020 and the end of September, 3.8 million medicine parcels were dispensed from the CDU for patients with chronic health conditions.

AWARDS

HOOFARTIKELBLAD

Woensdag, 25 November 2020

SLICE OF LIFE

Journalist bags VJOY for opinions Samantha Lee-Jacobs (28), a journalist at TygerBurger’s sister publication in the southern suburbs, People’s Post, has bagged the national award in the opinions category at the 2020 Vodacom Journalist of the Year awards (VJOY’s). The awards ceremony was held virtually on Friday 20 November where Lee-Jacobs represented the Western Cape region after winning the regional opinion category award at the regional virtual awards ceremony on Wednesday 11 November. The awards seek to recognise journalism excellence in the country across 12 categories. In its 19th year, the competition received a record number of 1 300 entries. Lee-Jacobs’s win was accredited to three columns published in both People’s Post (“Please just stop asking ‘when’ ”, “Breaking silence”) and TygerBurger (“Think twice before driving drunk”). The judges’ citation is: “Entries in this category covered many issues, mainly political but also the economy, sports and even religion. Many of these entries – while being well-written – offered views that were common in society and did not bring anything fresh to the debate at either a national or provincial level. Our national winner displayed a skill taking seemingly small issues and relating them to some of society’s important concerns such as sexual assault, peer pressure and drunk driving.” Lee-Jacobs says: “In writing these columns, I was able to share a bit of myself, my personal life and my own experiences with some of society’s social ills with our readers. This was also the first time I had ever spoken out about a personal encounter with sexual assault which empowered me to help others. As community journalists, we have a special role to play in connecting with readers, while sharing news and views that matter. Having won awards for telling people’s inspiring stories before, it was especially amazing and a great honour to be awarded for the vulnerability in sharing my own story.” Thulani Magazi, People’s Post editor, praised Lee-Jacobs for the achievement. “Well done, Sammy. This wonderful accomplishment is an excellent stamp of approval on what community journalism is all about. You have consistently showed and proved that community journalism is truly alive by regularly collecting awards,” says Magazi. “Walking away with a national award against some of the country’s finest writers and newspapers is a huge achievement. We are truly proud of your achievement as it not only puts your name on the South African media landscape, but our beloved People’s Post too. Congratulations! Continue doing what you do best and love most.”

Brackenfell violence, an issue for serious deliberation Any cause, no matter how worthy, will be destroyed if addressed by the EFF because of their proclivity for mayhem and violence. This protest, about a private function for matric learners from Brackenfell high school, on racial and economic grounds, should have been dealt with by people with sober minds and a clear vision for our future, and not by a bunch of political opportunists. Gatherings organised on racial and socio-economic lines merely perpetuate the myth of racial superiority and looks disparagingly on people, who are not economically well off. The fact that the function was organised for about only 20% white students of the matric class suggests that people of colour were excluded along with whites who could not afford the function. This decision by the parents to organise a

function on racial and economic grounds is a shame because it will make children who were excluded feel like outcasts. This myopic decision will have a damaging impact on the matric class of 2020 in Brackenfell High. It will be a year that they wouldn’t want to remember. The ideal would have been for all the learners, regardless of race or socio-economic status, to celebrate together. The violence that erupted in front of the school is lamentable because, firstly, it must have affected the learners, who were busy writing their exams and because they were not entirely responsible for organising the function; secondly, the violence ignored an issue that needed the attention of every thinking citizen that desires to live in a truly non-racial and nondiscriminatory society. The issue, as I understand it, is that a group of parents

organised a private celebration for matriculants, outside the school grounds on racial lines and invited the educators to the function, without any consideration for the feelings of the learners that were excluded, regardless of their colour. The response from the school was that they had nothing to do with organising the function, so they felt exonerated by the racial tone of such a gathering. The MEC for education, Debbie Schaeffer, came out in defence of the educators, who attended the function because she felt that the educators were unaware that the celebration was based on racial lines. This defence is utterly cras, unless the educators were totally blind. Such a response from the MEC could only be explained either on her ignorance about the impact such racial gatherings will have on the

Fisantekraal neglected I am a community keeper in Fisantekraal and my main focus is service delivery and crime prevention. Since 2015 I am the moderator and administrator of the Facebook page, Greenville Fisantekraal Community, and a WhatsApp crime prevention group. My daily tasks and interaction with my community did not start yesterday as I have been a police officer for 18 years and know this community since the 90s and uphold the safety of my neighbours. During this time I have noticed a lack of services and law enforcement agencies in and around my community. Likewise, people always reach out to social media to raise their concerns and as a fellow member I have tried my utmost to assist them.

During lockdown I have noticed the flooding of requests for assistance with Covid-19, Sassa grants, Eskom, police misconduct, City of Cape Town water-related sewerage problems, potholes and general enquiries. I always do proper research and give feedback. We have been targeted with a flood of crime related incidents such as murder, house robbery, armed robbery, contact crimes and even a case in which the mutilated body of a woman was found. Just a month ago, Fisantekraal was pointed out as the area with the highest crime rate in Durbanville in TygerBurger. Our people get robbed daily en route to their workplaces. The City’s electricity department refuses to render

minds of young and impressionable learners when they grow up to be adults or that she sees nothing wrong in racial gatherings. On the other hand, she could be pandering to the salivating appetite of her racist followers. If she is guilty of any of the above, she should resign. The MEC, the educators who attended and the school must understand one thing, and that is: children are not born racist, it is ingrained into them from their bigoted and racist parents at home. The question that should be on the top of everyone’s mind is: if children of all colours learn and play together, as part of the school’s and department of education’s creed, why did they have a celebration on racial and socio-economic lines? This question must lay heavily on the minds of children of colour, as well as their parents. EV RAPITI

Kompleks lei met herwinning service to this community and some of the streets are dark and without proper lighting. Since early lockdown I have been sending almost 60 emails without any progress. How is this possible? People are attacked and they give feedback such as that we as a community must get our act together. Must they use violence? Almost 50% of the streetlights are not working. In phase 3 (of Greenville) the new house owners move in without any streetlights. Eskom took almost two weeks to connect household meterboxes to their power supply. Water and sanitation are poorly attended to. Is Fisantekraal another lost city? TIMOTHY WILDSCHUT Email

Police gives safety tips A

s we approach the festive season, the Delft police want to warn the community to stay safe. Capt John Bartlett, police spokesperson, says the community must help the police to help themselves. “Community members must take into account a few things that makes service delivery swifter. Home owners are encouraged to place their house numbers in such a way that it is visible from the street. Police officers and other law enforcement agencies find it difficult to respond swiftly to complaints because they must search for the house number. “The community is requested to assist in this regard by making sure that their num-

bers are visible and clearly marked,” says Bartlett. Bartlett also gives the following safety tips for parents and children: . During this time of closing in on the festive season, parents and caregivers of children are urged to take full responsibility to ensure their children’s safety. . It is important to keep an open line of communication and trust between parents and children, children and care givers and for parents to know their children’s friends. Children must be taught the basic rules and to follow the rules and instructions well. Parents must be observant as to identify abnormal behaviour in their children. . Tell your child never to approach a vehi-

cle unless they are absolutely sure they know the occupants and that they have your permission to get into the car. Children must never accept gifts, a lift, sweets and money from strangers or talk to them. Even people known to the child can be a culprit in harming or killing your child. Children must always let you know where they are going. . Children must be warned to avoid giving your home telephone number to strangers and to always play and walk in groups. They must never wander off as they will then be easy targets to would be criminals. . Avoid lonely and deserted places and do not take short cuts through alleyways and or deserted areas. Do not hitchhike. . Teach your child not to open your house

doors to anyone, but to let an adult open the door. . They must be made aware that their body is private and that they have the right to say no if someone touches them in an inappropriate manner. . Robberies is still a major concern in the Delft policing precinct. As cliché as it may sound, there is safety in numbers. We are requesting/urging people to always walk to and from work or their pick up point in groups. Always be vigilant when you park or pull out your vehicle from your drive way or garage. Firstly observe the area for any suspicious characters and people roaming the streets. . Ask a family member to accompany you to make sure no one approach you unexpectedly. If you see any suspicious people, go inside and phone the police and give a clear description of the suspicious person/s in order for police to act swiftly and that they can get the perpetrators along the way.

Summer safety tips for parents T

he summer holidays are around the corner and with the weather getting warmer, many families may be heading outdoors - whether at home or elsewhere - to enjoy activities together. Unfortunately, many common summer activities end up in accidents within a few seconds, which may have a lasting traumatic impact on all. “Most accidents that put children in the emergency room during the summer and festive season are preventable,” says leading paediatrician at Cape Gate Mediclinic and Paed-IQ BabyLine CEO, Dr Iqbal Karbanee. “Unfortunately, many common and fun family activities during the summer months can quickly take a turn for the worse and end in injury. Others can have lasting and traumatic consequences for families,” says Karbanee.

Child safety at home Examples of such activities include a trip to the beach or the local swimming pool, a home-based braai where there is a wood fire or paraffin burner that can fall over and cause a fire, or even bicycle or scooter rides. The ChildSafe Initiative in South Africa suggests that 80% of child injuries occur in or around the home and while many children are hospitalised, hundreds more end up visiting the emergency room and thousands more go to clinics and doctors. Karbanee says it is difficult to count the cost of treating preventable accidents in children, whether as once-off hospital visits or the longer-term costs of prolonged treatment and rehabilitation. It can cost up to as much as R500 000 when skin grafting or plastic surgery is required, which can be as a result of a burn.

The Child Gauge Report 2019 suggests that more than 8 000 children die every year as a result of injuries. About 5 000 of these are accidental or unintentional, with leading causes being road traffic injuries, burns and drownings. Globally, it is estimated that one million families lose a child to a preventable injury every year. “Reducing the number of preventable accidents is therefore a healthcare priority that should be observed by all parents and caregivers, especially during the summer months,” says Karbanee. Trampolines are great ways for kids to use up excess energy, but they are simply too dangerous. Children’s bones are still developing and experiencing an injury whether through a broken or fractured bone can set them back developmentally. Serious injuries related to the brain or spine can occur. If you are gifting your child or children a trampoline over the festive season, or if you already have a trampoline at home, there are ways you can lessen the risks associated with the equipment. Always make sure there is adult supervision and only one child at a time should be on the trampoline. No children under the age of six should be allowed to jump and it is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that strict rules are enforced.

if these places are busy. Make sure you and your child have a plan should they become separated from you and how they can look for help. Older children should be able to memorise your cell number. Drownings are known as silent killers because children are unable to shout for help and they are among the most common preventable accidents that can happen in seconds. A drowning can happen in a few centimetres of water. Life jackets are a must if you want to boat, canoe, or jet ski with your kids or even just spend time near a body of water. Never leave a child unattended near water and consider hiring a lifeguard to keep watch over the kids in the pool if you are having a gathering or party with several children in attendance. Dog bites are a major cause of preventable traumatic injury in children. Too often what starts as a peaceful or exciting family day out turns into a horror story involving a dog attack, with the victims mostly being children who can sustain severe injuries. Teach your children to not go near a dog who is off leash or without a muzzle, and to not put their face close to the dog’s, even if it is a trusted family pet. If the dog runs up to the child or a family on the beach or elsewhere, children should not reach out to pat the dog, even if it looks cute. Wood fires are common in South Africa during summer. They are dangerous to children if unattended, as children are nat-

“Unfortunately, many common and fun family activities during the summer months can quickly take a turn for the worse and end in injury.” - Karbanee

urally curious and may want to see what happens when they throw things into the fire. The smoke also poses a danger to young respiratory systems as they are still developing, even more so if the children suffer from asthma or allergies. Put fireplace tools and accessories out of a young child’s reach and keep a fire extinguisher on hand. It may seem obvious, but never leave children unsupervised with candles, paraffin burners or outdoor wood fires. If an accident does happen, never apply any butter or other food onto a burn.

Outdoor activities Playgrounds and parks are good to get kids to play outdoors, but be careful of hot slides and poorly maintained equipment that may have rusty nails or sharp hooks. Hot equipment can burn bodies and sharp objects can tear skin, which may require tetanus shots. Also remember to put sunscreen on your child of no less than SPF 50 when spending time outdoors. Bikes, scooters, skateboards and other wheelie toys are fun for children but should not be used near moving traffic. Traffic-related accidents are among the highest preventable accidents for children. Protective gear like helmets or shin or knee pads can go a long way in preventing injuries, whether only scrapes and bruises or more severe. “And if the worst happens, you don’t know what to do and you are struggling to assess whether a doctor’s visit or a trip to the emergency room is indeed necessary, it may be a good idea to make use of a telephonic advice service with trained nurses that can quickly and cheaply help you assess the severity of the situation,” concludes Karbanee.

‘Living Coloured’ an ode to thriving against the odds Yusuf Daniels’ bestselling book, Living Coloured, adapted for the stage and directed by Loukmaan Adams, will be at the Baxter Concert Hall from Tuesday 8 December to Saturday 9 January. Shows are at 19:30 with Saturday matinees at 14:30. The vibrant characters are brought to life by a cast of six performers who mostly play multiple characters, comprising Tashreeq de Villiers, Alexis Petersen, Eldon van der Merwe, Anzio September, Crystal Finck and musician Yvan Potts, all from David Kramer’s Danger in the Dark fame. Living Coloured is an ode to an era where communities and families thrived despite the hardship of apartheid. It is a hilarious, heart-warming and uplifting portrayal of Daniels’ own life story which speaks of family, friendships, community, traditions and culture, and what it was like growing up on the Cape Flats during an oppressive time with racism, gang-

sterism and poverty. “There were things that kept us sane. It made us forget the situation we found ourselves in and, most importantly, how we as a community lived fully beyond those odds presented to us at the time,” says Daniels. “I wrote Living Coloured (Because Black and White were already taken) and Living Lekke, to bring smiles and laughter to people’s faces.” Performances will be limited to fifty percent capacity, with Covid-19 protocols in place. Arrive at least an hour before the start of the performance to avoid delays. Ticket prices range from R125 to R225 and booking is through Webtickets on 086 111 0005, online at www.webtickets.co.za or at Pick n Pay stores. For discounted school or group block bookings, contact Carmen Kearns on 021 680 3993 or e-mail at carmen.kearns@uct.ac.za.

he familiar childhood tale of Cinderella is given a modern-day twist in Cinderella and FrikaDella presented by All Star Entertainment and GrandWest at the Roxy Revue Bar until Thursday 17 December. As social media takes over their world, the ruthless mother and talent agent, Patricia D, manages her social media “influencer” daughters, Frika and Della with very limited talent. The talented unseen stepdaughter Cinderella, is ignored, treated badly and suppressed, but a massive talent competition arises. Cinderella secretly enters it. The contemporary pantomime written and directed by Allistair Izobell features a stellar cast of performers which includes two Maak my famous season winners, Nicoleen Saal (season 2) as Cinderella and Cheswyn Ruiters (season 1) as Prince Siyaman Cowbell.

Actor and singer Loukmaan Adams is the mother and talent agent Patricia D, music artist, Nur Abrahams is daughter Frika, singer and songwriter, Daylin Sass is daughter Della and stage performer, Ramaine Barreiro is the Fairy Godmother. The show is produced by Olivia Gildenhuys. Charlton Daniels is the musical director and Rushney Ferguson does the choreography. Cinderella and FrikaDella opened on Monday 23 November and will run until Thursday 17 December, Mondays to Saturdays with a matinee show on Sundays. Doors open at 20:00 and will be closed at 20:15 when the curtain rises. The matinée performances will start at 16:00. An age limit of three applies. V Tickets can be booked through www.quicket.co.za

Lauren-Lee live: Die Hugo Lambrechts-musieksentrum vier vanjaar sy 23ste jaarlikse Concerto-fees.

Kaartjies is beskikbaar by www.quicket.co.za teen R155.

‘Toorbos’ is SA’s entry for Academy Awards René van Rooyen’s Toorbos has officially been selected as this year’s South African entry for the highly coveted Best International Feature Film Award for the 2021 Academy Awards. The film, which is an adaptation of renowned writer Dalene Matthee’s 2003 best-selling novel of the same name, is currently on circuit in South African cinemas. Competition was tough and the South African Academy Awards Selection Committee, comprising professionals from various fields of the filmmaking value chain, evaluated several submissions from 2 to 5 November at Nu Metro cinemas across the country. It is only the third South African entry by a female director for the Academy Awards, since 1989. “It is an honour for our entire team that our film has been selected to represent South Africa. Covid-19 has severely impacted our arts in South Africa, Africa and the rest of the world. This is an amazing tribute and opportunity for our Local Film Industry,” says producer, Dries Scholtz. Starring Elani Dekker in the lead, Toorbos investigates the uprooting of a young forest woman during the time of the final forest dwellers of South Africa’s Knysna forest of the 1930’s. It tells a story between the intimate relationship of an initiated “forest woman” and the heart of the forest and how it becomes an obstacle in her experience of the man she loves. Director René van Rooyen explains how Toorbos not only highlights

Abuse victim shares her life journey

RIP, Mr Cloete: Elsies River High School is mourning the death of the school’s deputy principal, Johannes Cloete, who died from Covid-19 complications on Friday 20 November. The provincial education department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond expressed condolences. “Our thoughts are with the family, friends and school community during this very difficult time. Mr Cloete taught Life Sciences at the school and was appointed as the deputy principal in 2019.”

oming from an abusive background has moulded Ruyterwacht resident, Linda Schwartz, to share her story in the hope of inspiring others. The 47-year-old endured abuse as a child and later experienced sexual and physical abuse in her adult relationships. Schwartz says her journey has taught her to be a stronger woman. She explains that her abuse had put much strain on her mental health as she was often feeling depressed and even experienced suicidal thoughts. “I have been a victim of abuse my whole life. I have experienced domestic abuse. It was very difficult for me to get through the stages of accepting what was happening to me. I couldn’t get over the fact that I was always getting hurt or attacked. I had to process this. I remember thinking it was all my fault, all the abuse. But through counselling I learnt it is not my fault. The abuse piled up as I never spoke about it. Domestic violence is to control another. It’s never suitable or healthy in any relationship.” Her only encouragement was her three children who needed their mother. “Women tend to feel fearful of the perpetrators when they’re in an abusive situation. I felt that I wanted to get away, but couldn’t at first. This was very difficult for me. I was very depressed, and I was at a stage of having suicidal thoughts, but I pushed through because I had to think about my children,” says Schwartz. She sought help at Ruyterwacht Day Hospital in 2005, where she first opened up about her situation at home and her childhood abuse. At the time, Schwartz struggled with her mental health and was later admitted to Stikland Hospital after being diagnosed with depression. “I received support at the clinic

there. The motivational speaker and groups there helped me a lot. I could talk about my hurt; I could share my feelings and my experiences. You need to get these feelings out of your system.” During her time at Stikland, she became inspired and decided to leave her partner. “Any kind of abuse is very damaging to one’s mental health and even the perpetrators too. You eventually have to get to a point where you forgive the person for the harm they’ve caused you. The journey of healing involves a lot of tears and a lot of sadness. While I have forgiven the perpetrators, I have never seen them since and prefer it that way,” says Schwartz. She has since become a motivational speaker and supports the staff at Ruyterwacht Day Centre when they host mental health talks, particularly talks on abuse. Schwartz has also completed a domestic violence course and regularly seeks ways to help other women, including young girls. Her story has a happy ending as she says she was able to find love, a kind of love that she has never experienced. “I’m in a much better space now

and I’ve also been dating someone for three years. He has shown me a lot of love, patience and has been very supportive during this journey. Schwartz has also expressed her gratitude for Ruyterwacht Day Centre mental health nurse, Sandra Baloyi, who has been a big support for the mother of three. Juanita Arendse, director for health services in the northern Tygerberg area, says communities can access support from their local primary healthcare facilities. “During the Covid-19 peak, many people put healthcare activities on hold. It is important that we return to healthcare safely and look after our general physical and mental well-being. Tips in securing your dream rental property T

here are currently more rental properties on the market than there have been in many years and it is quite understandable that many prospective tenants believe that they will easily be able to secure their preferred property once found. However, in many instances this is simply not the case. “This is especially true in the lower to medium price ranges in sought-after areas which offer convenient proximity to good schools and amenities,” says Lorraine-Marie Dellbridge, rentals manager for Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs. “In these areas there is still a lot of competition for well-priced homes that tick all the right boxes and they tend to be snapped up quickly.” According to Dellbridge, there are several things prospective tenants can do to nudge themselves to the top of the list and to avoid delays that could cost them their dream home. . Ensure you are admin-ready ahead of time. You will need three month’s bank statements, a certified copy of your ID, Fica documents (proof of address) and references from previous landlords where possible. . Request the application form prior to viewing. Have it completed and with your documents ready to hand in on the day if you

like the property after viewing. . Have the necessary funds ready. Ensure that you have enough money available to pay the required deposit and, if applicable, the application fee. If there are two candidates of the same caliber, the one with his/her admin and funds at the ready will invariably get the property. . Be mindful of your credit rating. If possible, do a prior check to ensure your credit score is clear. But also bear in mind that there are also other factors that can count against you, including having little or no credit because it’s difficult to determine your credit payment pattern and reliability. Agents also usually assess the prospective tenant’s earnings as opposed to their monthly expenses because not everyone declares everything that they have to pay out on a monthly basis on their application form. These are the things we pick up in bank statements and credit records. Bank statements will also show when someone has a high credit score but is actually living in overdraft, which makes them more of a risk. . Be on time. Make sure you arrive on time to view the property. Don’t breeze in 30 minutes late with a smile and a casual “sorry”. Besides being rude and annoying, the

Despite the gloomy economic climate, there is still considerable competition for well-priced, conveniently located rental homes in sought-after areas, and prospective tenants who assume they will easily snap up their dream home are likely to be disappointed. agent is bound to wonder if you are as cavalier about paying your rent on time. . Understand that most agency leases are standard and law compliant. When you start wanting to make changes, it can make agencies and landlords nervous, especially when

Riedewaan 073 399 2082

it comes to significant clauses like those pertaining to the Consumer Protection Act which enables a tenant to exercise their right to terminate the lease early. . Understand that if there is more than one applicant, the landlord might choose the one that is being less of a hassle. If it’s complicated early on, a landlord may fear that a tenant is likely to become troublesome. . Remember that, unless otherwise stipulated, you’re viewing the property to take it as it is. Barring items of repair that may make it unlivable such as roof leaks or broken toilet leaks, by submitting an application, you are applying for the home as you viewed it. If you start demanding that the landlord install new fixtures such as new security measures and other upgrades, the landlord may be inclined to opt for a tenant who has fewer special requests, which means that if there are other applicants, you are likely to lose out. . Give your references a heads-up. The chances are that the agent will call your previous landlords and if they are not expecting to give a reference, they may well not answer a call from an unknown number or might assume it’s yet another unsolicited spam call and be very grumpy from the offset. KILLARNEY: KARTING TITLES TO BE DECIDED

All geared up for finalé I

n spite of lockdown stealing a significant amount of its season, the Rotax Max Western Province Karting Championship will reach seven rounds out of the initially planned eight at Killarney’s season finale on Saturday 28 November. Among this year’s classes there will be a mere formality after a few standout performances through the season. Others will, however, go right down to the line. Among the latter, the baby Bambinos arrive at Killarney with little Aiden Beaumont all of three points clear of young Kai van Rensburg in the title chase. So that one can go either way, considering there’s a three-point difference between a race win and a second. And there are three races on Saturday. It’s just as close between Sebastiano Human and Siyabonga Ntuli for third, and Liam Wharton and Michael Danks for fifth too. Stepping up to u.11 Micro Max, Reese Koorzen already has one hand on that championship, but its tight for second. Joshua Smit holds an eleven point advantage over

Jordan Wadeley. African Open winner Keagan Beaumont will be the kid to watch though — the African Open winner has come on strong and will be out to secure the title fourth over Dale Hobbs and Sabelo Ntuli. It would appear that Reza Levy and Ethan Deacon need to do something silly to squander their u.13 Mini-Max 1-2. But on closer inspection, third placed Joaquin de Oliveira is a clear danger man. He missed the first two races, so will not have to drop any of his results and all his points will count. His rivals must still drop results so that brings de Oliveira into striking distance. Joshua Smit, Jude Stuart and Jordan Wadeley will also be in that chase. Kyle Visser has all but wrapped up the WP u.15 Junior Max title. The fight there is for second between brothers Andre and Kyle le Riche and Matthew Wadeley. Ethan Stier and Troy Dolinschek are danger men there as they too, do not drop any points after missing championship rounds. Senior Max however promises to be a thriller.
