Geared up for 2021 academics Blouberg International School’s matric class received their special jackets last week boasting as seniors of the new academic year. As recently reported, Basic Education minister Angie Motshekga indicated that the return of students will be staggered, with private school learners allowed to return to school two weeks earlier than their public school counterparts. Blouberg International School said the matriculants were excited to show off their signature matric look to the school and wishing them all the best in this important school year.

hat might look like a pile of sand next to Bridgewater One in Century City, is becoming an extensive water body and public park. This as the previous fun-filled entertainment site, Ratanga Junction Theme Park, closed its gates to the public in 2018 and is earmarked for a transformation. According to the Rabie Property Group, who is currently in the process of rejuvenating the iconic landmark, excavation has started at Ratanga Park, with a total of
75 000m³ earth being moved to create a water body to hold 1.64ha of water. “The existing Century City canals will be connected with the newly shaped water body, making it possible to canoe from the one end of the precinct to the other,” the company says in a statement. The park’s planting theme is a composition of formal tall tree avenues fronting the various new building facades bordering the new parkland. From here, the landscape design transforms into rolling lawns amid indigenous, shady forest edges with sheltered grassy glades sweeping down to the perched, florif-
erous, Cape wetland edge, all set around the naturally reconfigured lake, islands and canals. “The park will serve as a well-managed and versatile green open space, one of capacity and calm in a modern urban environment. Winding paths navigate the park and its points of interest and present advantageous views towards Table Mountain and across the water body. Many existing large trees and palms will be retained, as well as two Ratanga Junction Theme Park bridges,” they add. Ratanga Park’s water will connect with the existing canals, which means that you

Help animals and get your car washed Sierra Animal Foundation is hosting a Covid friendly charity event on 28 February at Traffik Car Wash at 3 Lood Street in Brackenfell. This is in aid of two non-profit organisations: Change for the Better Foundation and Pit Pals. The event will be the first of multiple events throughout the year in order to maximise awareness of these two organisations and raise as much funds as possible in order for the two organisations to continue helping to rescue animals and help fund their rescue efforts. Ninety percent of the ticket sales will go to the rescue organisations. “Sierra Animal Foundation is hosting our first Covid friendly Car wash fundraiser at Traffik Car Wash on 28 February in aid of two rescue organisations, Pit Pals and Change for the Better Foundation. “Our drive through wash and dry is done while you enjoy the safety and comfort of your own vehicle, limiting any interactions from our volunteers. “We have time slot bookings on Quicket to ensure that you have the best possible experience and that you do not wait too long in the queue,” says a spokesperson of the organisation. Water cannon at Sassa a mistake, says Cele NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk
P
olice “dropped the ball” when they fired a water cannon at pensioners and the disabled outside Sassa’s Bellville offices recently, police minister Bheki Cele said last week. The police have come under fire recently for their differing reactions to protesters who demanded the beach open in Muizenberg and those queueing at Sassa’s offices in Bellville. “We should not treat anyone differently,” he said during a visit to police stations in the Cape Town metropole. “There’s been a perception of how we behaved and how we treated pensioners in Bellville and the incident in Muizenberg (on Saturday).” He said police were “very circumstancial” towards people who sat down in Muizenberg and broke the law. Police used a water cannon to ensure so-
cial distancing at Sassa’s office in Bellville after hundreds of people flocked for grants because of the closure of other offices. Minister of social development, Lindiwe Zulu, was also there on the day. Thousands of grant beneficiaries have to reapply for temporary disability grants after they lapsed in December last year. This has led to long queues which have worsened because of office closures due to Covid-19 and staff shortages. Cele promised a full report regarding the matter and “why police used so much force on Sassa recipients”. “The methods that were used was wrong because they were not violent or protesting.” “In Bellville, you had poor people, vulnerable people going there because they are hungry, some of them are brought in wheelbarrows, some of them are on crutches . . . The issue there was social distancing. That didn’t meet the approach we used.
“The approach we used was to handle them like people who are rioting – we used water cannons, we should not have done that.” The provincial minister of community safety, Albert Fritz, also condemned the situation. In a statement he said he had received the acting provincial commissioner’s report and said it fails to answer elements regarding events on the day; like why it was necessary to use a water cannon. “My unconditional condemnation of the unacceptable behaviour of the police towards Sassa beneficiaries still stands, and I am determined to use all my powers of oversight to get to the bottom of the circumstances that resulted in such a decision being made and implemented by the police.” He said he would approach Cele to request the police’s official report to conduct the necessary oversight. The South African Human Rights Council is also formally investigating the matter.
Health workers honoured for the extra mile Health workers at the Karl Bremer Hospital fighting the Covid-19 pandemic on the front line were thanked recently for working around the clock. Hospital Heroes, a movement which rewards the efforts made by these workers, and Gift of the Givers, a non-profit organisation, showed their appreciation on Wednesday 3 February by donating refreshments to workers which included cooldrinks, koeksisters and other snacks. Dr Zameer Brey from Hospital Heroes says they want health workers to know that they are not alone in the fight against Covid19. “We just want to say thank you to the staff for doing their best, often under stressful circumstances. They go the extra mile, and we want to thank them. “This is from the community to say to our health workers that we care about them and that we recognise the work they are doing. We know you are doing a great job, hang in there. We will continue to support you as
best we can,” says Brey. Karl Bremer Hospital management has welcomed the donation and thanked the organisations for their generosity. Hospital Heroes and Gift of the Givers have made similar donations to other hospi-
tals across the city. The public is encouraged to help the health department fight Covid-19 by wearing a mask, washing hands regularly and maintaining a distance of 1.5 metres from others, as well as to stay home if ill.
Health workers from Karl Bremer Hospital recently received donations from Gift of the Givers and Hospital Heroes. The donation is a token of their appreciation for the hard work done by the nurses and doctors.

A mother and son will appear in court again soon on charges of fraud, the Hawks say. Zinzi Hani, spokesperson of the Hawks, said in a press statement Antoinette L’ Amour Pender (63) and her son John (38) appeared in the Bellville Commercial Crimes Court last week. They are facing charges of tax fraud exceeding R1 million. “The duo was served with court summons by the Hawks serious commercial investigation team on 26 January,” Hani said.
“John, a registered tax practitioner, allegedly submitted several fictitious invoices to the SA Revenue Services (Sars) on behalf of his mom who is a registered tax payer. “This happened over a period between 2010 and 2016.” Sars did an initial audit probe and it revealed invoices that were allegedly forged. This amounted to a loss of more than R1 million. They were arrested by the Hawks serious commercial crimes investigation team. The duo will appear in court again on 26 February.

Clean up for change KAYLYNNE BANTOM @bantomkaylynne

hat started as just a normal hiking excursion for friends has now turned into a fun-filled activity for Capetonians and they’re caring for the environment while they’re at it. Jihad Owen (28) explains that, a month ago, he and a group of his friends decided to start a hiking group. Owen says they decided to extend an invitation to anyone who loves the outdoors to join in. He says that’s how the Trail Blazer hiking group came about. Owen says after noticing all the litter on the trails, he came up with the #FillABag challenge. “The hiking group is about engaging with other people. We have all been going through a stressful time with the Covid-19 pandemic, so hiking is a way to de-stress. The idea behind the #FillABag challenge is to encourage people to clean up our mountains and hiking trails.” The group aims to bring together likeminded individuals to share their passion for nature while spreading awareness around the importance of our #FillABag challenge. Owen says he was surprised by how many people showed interest. He says there are currently more than 40 people in the group and the number is still growing. He explains that they cover different hiking trails every week. “We have done Pipe Track on Table Mountain, Cecilia Forest and Constantia Nek.” According to Owen, water bottles, cigarette buds and masks are some of the common trash they have been collecting. “More importantly, we want to create awareness and tell people not to litter, not only on the mountain but at beaches and parks. “I’d like to call on the entire hiking community to try out this challenge for their planned hikes. We can choose to be affected by the world or we can choose to affect the world.”

FROM PAGE 1 The following plans have been revealed. . a wildlife habitat for birds . passenger excursions on the canal . at least one large water source . public park developments, such as “green trails” and scenic walks . rowing boats Surrounding residents are in awe of the new plans for the iconic landmark, saying that the park has “big shoes to fill”. “Everyone was simply amazed with Ratanga Junction Theme Park and I don’t think anything can really replace it. The fond memories we shared with our families will always be cherished. However, I welcome this new and cool idea of a water park. Just hope it does not take forever to complete,” says resident Sandy le Roux. Other residents have also given the new plans a thumbs up and shared their thoughts and other ideas on social media. “Ratanga Park is a very exciting part of this project and a significant new public area and green lung in Century City,” says Haupt. “We have extensively workshopped the design of the green spaces, the pathways, public interaction with the different elements, lighting, and access from various directions. An important aspect is creating an interactive and interesting space that can be enjoyed by all visitors, residents and office staff throughout the day and even into the evenings.”
Learn life skills A Parow based youth development agency, YoungPeople@Work, offers unemployed people free online life skills training, via WhatsApp. Shirley de Jongh, operations manager, says all that is needed is a smartphone and access to WhatsApp. “You can learn in the comfort of your home. You can also revise the slides and voice notes as many times as you want, to deepen your understanding.
Work currently underway at the previous Ratanga Junction Theme Park where new plans include a water body and public park. “Anyone can sign up wherever they are,” De Jongh says. She says young people can book now for free online life skills sessions, including professional job seeking skills, effective money management, effective customer relations, basic office administration skills and licence to live. “Also sign up for our free computer literacy and MS Windows sessions,” De Jongh says. a ’n pleidooi om hulp deur die WP Veteraan Trekker- en Enjinklub om boere in Loeriesfontein by te staan, het donasies ingestroom vanuit alle oorde in die stad.
“Baie boere moes hul kuddes verkoop omdat daar nie weiveld of genoeg voer was nie. Dié boerdery stry nog ’n stryd om te oorleef, terwyl baie ander uitgeboer het. “En dis nie net die boere en hul gesinne wat sukkel nie, maar ook die plaaswerkers en hul gesinne. Counselling also for kids CARINA ROUX Judy Strickland, a trained lay counsellor, established Hope House Counselling Centre in 2004 when she started counselling from her lounge in Lakeside. Her vision was to offer counselling to those who needed it, without fear of the costs. Today Hope House has grown to three counselling centres – in Bergvliet, Kuils River and Table View. In response to the article “Lockdown: The kids are not okay” in last week’s TygerBurger, Strickland says Hope House have qualified counsellors equipped to see children. “We have all Covid-19 protocols in place at our three centres and can counsel in English and Afrikaans. All our counselling is done on a donation basis, so it is affordable to everyone.” Donation-based counselling
is available for anyone for any issue, whether its grieving a loss, going through divorce, addiction, or other challenges. Strickland says they also do substance abuse treatment at their centres and in schools. From the Kuils River centre, which has been open seven years, they run gender-based violence (GBV) talks and support groups. “We also do talks for the youth on sexual health, including their rights. In 2021 we are looking to run a couple of GBV campaigns for men, women and youth – we want to educate our youth around values.” Strickland is passionate about training and development of counsellors and Hope House runs frequent workshops. City neighbourhood watches to get a boost N
eighbourhood watch groups across the metro will get a major boost as Mayor Dan Plato and Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, began a series of community neighbourhood watch support visits over the weekend. Over the past decade, neighbourhood watch (NHW) groups have grown steadily and have become a key part of crime prevention in communities across Cape Town. “These 50 000 city-wide neighbourhood watch members realise the significance of being active members in their communities, dedicating their time to help make neighbourhoods safer. “Preventing crime requires a whole-of-society approach and these residents are aware of the contribution they can make in
uplifting their surroundings. “Visibility is so important and we wanted to give added support to NHW groups to emphasise the work they do in their communities. We appreciate their efforts,” Plato said. “The visits are also intended as a way to directly engage residents on any service delivery issues that they are facing and need assistance with. “During the patrol, residents are encouraged to highlight any issues which need our urgent attention,” added Plato. Plato and Smith joined Southern Eye watch group as they walked through hotspots in Lavender Hill and Seawinds. They also handed over twelve LED torches and 80 reflective bibs to Southern Eye to bolster their patrolling efforts.
The patrol activities centred on engaging with residents around crime prevention and to underscore the importance of wearing masks to prevent the spread of Covid-19, as per the national disaster regulations. The walk was also to encourage further growth of NHW groups. Many expressed an interest in becoming members of the neighbourhood watch community. “The NHWs are an invaluable resource and have grown tremendously over the last ten years. Without them, crime would be more distinctively felt in hotspot areas,” he said. “The NHWs are our eyes and ears by helping the City’s drug task team and police’s anti-gang unit take more effective action by
knowing where to target interventions. “There’s a great deal of training and development that we are doing with our NHWs; we provide them with the necessary equipment and also recruit them into the auxiliary services in law enforcement,” Smith said. Although the law enforcement department’s primary role is by-law enforcement and addressing traffic violations, they are playing an increasingly larger role in joining the local communities to prevent crime. The public can anonymously report any suspicious activity to the public emergency communication centre on 021 480 7700 from a cellphone, or 107 from a landline. Complaints of non-compliance with Covid-19 regulations can be directed to the City’s compliance hotline on 021 444 3582.

Illegal dumping costs City millions The City of Cape Town has called on residents to refrain from acts of illegal dumping into the sewer system. During 2020 the City’s water and sanitation department cleared approximately 122 000 sewer blockages, of which about 75% was as a result of misuse of the sewer system. The City spent approximately R350 million last year specifically due to misuse of the system. Of the items illegally dumped included tyres, old clothes, shoes, building rubble, rags, newspaper, nappies, feminine hygiene products, condoms, wet wipes, animal carcasses, food waste and hardened cooking fats. “We want to thank our essential frontline water and sanitation teams who have been working hard and diligently, even throughout lockdown, often facing very challenging and obstructive circumstances, to ensure they clear the blockages as soon as possible and repair or replace our infrastructure, where needed, so that residents can have a healthy environment. “It hasn’t always been easy as there were times when protest action prevented maintenance teams from accessing areas or illegally erected structures were built over the
City’s infrastructure, preventing them from attending to sewer blockages. Sometimes our staff are also targeted by opportunistic criminals while on site, carrying out the work. “Regardless of these challenges, they attended to and cleared just over 122 000 sewer blockages last year, which needs to be commended,” said the City’s Mayco member for water and waste, Xanthea Limberg. She added the City will continue to respond to these service requests and clear blockages as quickly as they can, but meaningful improvement and reduction in overflows requires a shift in behaviour and habits in society. “We all need to be much more conscious of what we flush down the toilets. Currently, too many of our limited resources are being used to respond to the consequences of illegal behaviour.” Common causes of blockages include: . rags; . newspapers; . feminine hygiene products; . nappies; . wet wipes; and . building materials/rubble. The problems are compounded when high
levels of cooking fat/oil enter the system. “When fats/oils are poured or flushed down the sink and drain, they harden and build up on the inside of the sewer pipes and act like glue, attracting rags, hair, paper, plastics and other debris. The hardness of these blockages can also make them very difficult to clean out. We encourage residents to please dispose of these items appropriately using the refuse removal services and City drop off sites, where applicable,” said Limberg. Residents are reminded of the following: . Please ensure that rain gutters and downpipes and surface run-off on your property flows into stormwater drains in the street rather than sewers. . Only human waste, toilet paper, and cleaning detergent should be flushed down the toilet. Everything else – rags, cooking oil/fats, newspapers, feminine hygiene products, condoms, nappies, wet wipes and building materials – need to disposed of via the appropriate solid waste services that are provided by the City. Flushing anything apart from human waste and toilet paper is illegal in terms of the wastewater and industrial effluent by-law. . Manholes should not be used for dump-
ing/waste disposal. These should remain closed as they are only used for inspection and maintenance purposes. Some tips for residents: . Put a strainer in the sink to catch food or other waste before it goes down the drain. . Wipe cooking fats, oil or grease off the pan, and don’t pour it down the drain. . Don’t flush nappies and sanitary products, they absorb water and expand, which causes blockages. . Check that rainwater gutters don’t flow into the sewer system, as it overloads. . Visit the City’s drop-off facilities to dispose of recyclables, electronics, garage waste and builder’s rubble. Residents are encouraged to use one of the channels available to log a service request: (Please provide the street address, and get a reference number.) . Online www.capetown.gov.za/servicerequests; . Email water@capetown.gov.za; . SMS 31373 (maximum 160 characters. Standard rates apply); . Call 0860 103 089; or . Visit a City walk-in centre (see www.capetown.gov.za/facilities to find the one closest to you).
When worry gets too much, get help
Deidre Adams and Michael Davis (FoodForward SA) and Roan Snyman from Feed the Nation Foundation finalise the first batch of deliveries for patients around the province who have been identified by the Western Cape health department as being in need of urgent food assistance.
Covid-19 patients in CT to get food relief A pilot initiative between FoodForward SA, Feed the Nation Foundation and the provincial health department will identify and expedite food support to patients with compromised immunity who have lost their ability to earn an income. This initiative was launched on Friday 29 January. Clinics involved in the pilot are located in the following areas: Cape Town, Delft South, Delft, Emfuleni, Gugulethu, Grassy Park, Hanover Park, Hout Bay, Khayelitsha, Kuils River, Lower Crossroads, Milnerton, Mitchell’s Plain, Ocean View, Parow, Philippi East, Retreat, Samora Machel, Salt River, Silvertown and Woodstock. FoodForward SA managing director, Andy du Plessis said through a standardised referral system, selected nurses and dietitians will identify food-insecure patients and send a daily list to the provincial health department. “This list will be collated and sent to FoodForward SA once a week. Feed the Nation Foundation will provide 100 food hampers a week, which will be packed by Pick n Pay and Boxer stores and distributed directly to patients’ homes by FoodForward SA. This programme will support individuals and families, reinstating dignity and well-being during the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic.” Dr Keith Cloete, head of the provincial health department, said an initiative of this nature will benefit frontline workers as well. “FoodForward SA and Feed the Nation
Foundation’s much-needed support will not only bring relief to thousands of families; it will also provide significant relief to frontline healthcare workers to know their patients are receiving the critical food support needed to build their immune system.” According to Suzanne Ackerman-Berman, trustee of Feed the Nation Foundation, the focus will primarily be on those affected by Covid-19. However, food assistance will also be given to patients suffering with HIV/ Aids and other chronic illnesses who are food-insecure. “Nurses and dietitians at public health facilities around the province are in daily contact with patients, which makes them ideally placed to identify where the most critical nutritional needs are. Having quick access to this information will enable us to deliver food assistance in the fastest possible time.” The food hampers include maize meal, flour, rice, long-life milk, canned food, lentils/peas, soya mince, peanut butter, jam, sugar, cooking oil and other basic non-perishable items. FoodForward SA will supplement the hampers with additional food products, fresh fruit and vegetables. “Each food parcel will feed four to six people, and offers each person one nutritious meal per day for four weeks. Some of the outcomes the pilot project hopes to achieve include improved access to food in vulnerable communities, access to a greater variety of nutritious foods and healthier populations in low socioeconomic communities,” reads a statement.
It is not unusual to experience feelings of anxiety or worry from time to time, but for some people these feelings can be ongoing and debilitating. Anxiety is a normal part of life, and so it may not always be simple to distinguish when it may have developed into an unhealthy preoccupation. Sindisiwe Mlotshwa, a counselling psychologist, says that anxiety typically consists of physical, emotional and mental reactions, and in moderation these reactions are quite normal and may even be helpful. “In small doses, anxiety can help protect us from danger and help focus our attention when tasks need to be completed. However, when these reactions occur too frequently and are more severe, they can begin to affect our work performance, relationships and quality of life,” Mlotshwa says. When worry and anxiety begin to manifest to the point where they are becoming unmanageable, the person could be suffering from an anxiety disorder. According to Mlotshwa, while there are different types of anxiety disorders, if your anxious experiences are becoming intolerable there are certain signs you should take note of. These include: . uncontrollable worry; . excessive nervousness; . sleep problems; . muscle tension; . poor concentration; . increased heart rate; . upset stomach; and . avoidance of situations that may cause fear, or the fear itself. “When these symptoms become both too frequent and severe for those affected to manage, it is important to seek professional help,” Mlotshwa says. “Anxiety disorders share elements of extreme fear and anxiety where the person’s behaviour changes because of these anxious thoughts and feelings. “For example, if a person has anxiety about driving in traffic, this may be helpful if it promotes more cautious driving behaviour. If anxiety is making you so cautious that you are a danger to other drivers by driving too slow, fast or indecisively for instance, or if you avoid driving at all, then the anxiety has become a problem. If the person’s anxiety leads them to stop going to work or visiting friends and family because they do not want to travel in a vehicle, then the anxiety is disrupting their life. It would suggest the possibility of an anxiety disorder, which may require professional mental health sup-
port to overcome,” she notes. Mlotshwa says there are multiple types of anxiety disorders, including social anxieties or social phobia, separation anxieties and panic attacks. “Fortunately, professional help is available and there are various ways of treating and navigating anxiety, which may be useful either on their own or in combination,” she adds. “Exercise can be very helpful, as it promotes the healthy production of serotonin and endorphins to help regulate anxious feelings. These natural hormones promote feelings of calm and well-being, and can assist in managing the symptoms. Exercise is often recommended in conjunction with other interventions, such as psychotherapy or medication prescribed by a psychiatrist.” Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is one of the techniques psychologists most frequently use when treating anxiety disorders. “Through CBT, unhealthy thinking patterns that elevate anxiety levels are identified and challenged. Often, CBT will also include elements of exposure therapy and relaxation techniques.” Exposure therapy, which should only ever be undertaken with a trained professional, involves slow and gradual exposure to whatever is triggering the client’s anxiety, with the aim of diminishing their distress. “Relaxation techniques can also assist in managing the symptoms of anxiety. These include practices such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and mindful sensory engagements. Through focusing on external and physical experiences or senses, we can help the person to step out of their internal emotional experiences. Once the client is comfortable with relaxation techniques, they can be applied whenever needed, without the presence of a guiding professional. Psychiatrists may prescribe antianxiety medication to help address the chemical causes of anxiety within the body. Medication should only ever be taken exactly as prescribed, and it is important not to stop taking psychiatric medicine without first consulting your treating doctor, even if you are feeling better,” Mlotshwa advises. “Anxiety disorders can be devastating, but the good news is that help is available. It is possible to overcome anxiety and reclaim your life.” In the event of a psychological crisis, emergency support can be reached on 0861 435 787, 24 hours a day.

Melani Cook (40, BMW E36 325) leads the field at the start of the second Bejo Trustees Fine Cars race – she went on to win all three races in this category. PHOTO: COLIN BROWN
POWER SERIES: HISTORIC VICTORY FOR COOK
Three times a winner M
elani Cook, driving her father’s BMW E36 325, made history at Killarney in Round 1 of the Power Series on Saturday 6 February as she not only became the first woman driver in living memory to win a saloon car race outright, she went on to score a hard-fought hattrick of three Bejo Trustees Fine Cars wins in one day. Cook started Race 1 in fourth behind Gunther Appelgryn, Jan Koekemoer and the astonishingly quick Stuart Greig, but powered past Greig and Appelgryn on lap three to take the lead. As she gradually eased away to finish 3.38sec clear of the field, Appelgryn, Koekemoer and Rodney Green fought it out for second in a monumental dice that saw them finish in that order, covered by less than a second. Race 2 was a lot tighter; Koekemoer ran a close second to Cook for two laps before falling victim to Appelgryn. Appelgryn and Green were the only drivers able to stay with the Cook BMW in Race 3, as she eased home to her third win of the day. It was a battle of the giants in the Sports & GT category races as local
hero Steve Humble in the Juddpowered Harp Pilbeam and SA Endurance Series champion Franco Scribante in his freshly rebuilt Porsche 997 TT fought it out for line honours. Scribante led the first six laps of Race 1 before being overtaken by Humble – but the fight wasn’t over, as Scribante dived down the inside going into Kfm Corner at the start of lap eight and the two came together. Externally, the damage to both cars seemed minimal, but the Porsche refused to shift out of sixth gear and Scribante cruised round to the pits to retire while Humble went on to win by almost nine seconds from Dayne Angel and his father Marcel. The Scribante Porsche was back for Race 2 and running as hard as ever, but Humble was on top form, posting the fastest lap of the day on lap four, and there was no way the visitor was going to challenge for the win. Scribante finished a fine second, while Dayne Angel beat his father for third by just 0.01sec after a superb dice. Marco Busi and Jurie ‘Umpie’ Swart shared the honours in the Cheaper Cars GTi Challenge races with a win apiece. Veteran Jacques Ackerman not

only posted the first race win of his career in the South Motorcycles Superbike Series, he made it a double! Pre-race favourite David ‘McFlash’ McFadden wisely withdrew on the morning of race day after working through the night to repair Brett Roberts’ Yamaha, which suffered a gearbox failure during practise on Friday, setting up an epic duel in Race 1 between Ackerman and David Enticott. The two were never more than a bike length apart until both ran wide going into Turn 3 on the final lap, when Enticott, in his own words, “got on the gas a little bit too early”, and very nearly highsided. Enticott pulled off a near-miracle save, but it cost him about a second, and with it any chance of challenging for the win in the final corner, as he came home 1.327sec in arrears. Enticott was unable to stay with Ackerman in Race 2, and was caught in the closing stages by Le Cok, Racoupeau and Cragg. He refused to give up, however, setting up the closest finish of the day for second overall as Racoupeau, Donovan Le Cok, Rob Cragg and Enticott came home in that order within 0.782sec.
