A

46-year-old single father from Dunoon has received a MyCiTian award for excellent customer service.

Luvuyo Lawrence Jadu is an employee of Kidrogen, one of the vehicle operating companies contracted to operate the MyCiTi bus service. He has been working for Kidrogen for the past 10 months.

He received the award, handed to him on Friday 4 October, because of his consistent, excellent customer service to passengers on the different MyCiTi routes he has worked on since he joined Kidrogen.

The City’s transport information centre, where commuters can report compliments or complaints about the bus service, received countless reports of praise from Jadu’s passengers. On a Facebook post in August to the MyCiTi Bus page, Jana Cloete

said: “Can you please make this driver the Driver of the Year? Lawrence Jadu, you are simply amazing. This gentleman always greets his customers, always with enthusiasm, and he makes everyone happy.

“Thank you for getting us home safely, being a cautious driver and putting our safety first. He has a lot to teach to some of the other drivers.

“He really should be acknowledged for the excellent service he is delivering constantly.

Always friendly, calling us his ‘very lovely customers’. You are MyCiTi’s best asset, thank you,” she stated.

On the same post, another passenger, Lézelle Breytenbach commented: “Honestly, he is the friendliest bus driver I have ever experienced.

“He is never late and always super friendly. He definitely deserves to be acknowledged,” she posted.

he Community Champions Elders Awards ceremony took place on Saturday 12 October at Media24’s rooftop venue, Nasdak.

The awards, now in its fourth year, recognises older citizens who, despite their social circumstances, are actively making a difference in their communities and the lives of others.

The age category 70 to 80 years was won

by Minnie and Daniël Hoorn from Capricorn. Danny Brown from Elsies River was the runner-up and Lydia Nogaga from Ma-

siphumelele placed third.

Margaret Voogt from Blomtuin won the 80+ category, with Peter Knight from Maitland in second place and Sarah Dantu from Belhar in third. Danny Brown also secured the majority of the public vote to take home the People’s Choice Award.

The awards were presented by People’s Post, TygerBurger and City Vision, in partnership with Spec-Savers.

Each elder took home prizes sponsored by Spec-Savers, Shoprite, Parow Centre, People’s Post, TygerBurger and City Vision.

Tafelberg Furnishers will this year host their fifth fun run with an even bigger budget and some new partners on 26 October.

The CapeGate branch hosted the fourth fun run a year ago and it was a huge success.

The entry fee is R30 and the race starts at 07:00, with the time limit of two hours.

All athletes, runners, walkers and prams are welcome. Unfortunately, no dogs or pets allowed. Steinmann says that although there are guaranteed prizes for the first three athletes in both the men’s and ladies’ categories, many more spot prizes will be up for grabs. The prize giving ceremony will start directly after the last participant crosses the finishing line.

Cecilia Hume, TygerBurger se redakteur, was vol lof vir die inskrywings wat reeds ontvang is.

“Soos ons in verlede week se koerant gesê het, kan almal inskryf – solank jy bo 18 is en oor ’n Suid-Afrikaanse identiteitsnommer beskik,” sê Hume.

Hume het ook mense wat verlede jaar ingeskryf het, genooi om weer te probeer. “As jy voel jy was verlede jaar ongelukkig om nie tot die eindronde deur te dring nie, is vanjaar nog ’n kans om jou sangtalent met die wêreld te deel. Net diegene wat verlede jaar in die eerste drie plekke geëindig het, mag nie weer vanjaar inskryf nie,” sê sy.

Sy het weer ’n beroep op deelnemers gedoen om te let op die gehalte van hul videoinskrywings.

“Dit sal hartseer wees as ons ’n potensiële wenner se video moet diskwalifiseer omdat die gehalte nie goed genoeg is nie. Daar is aanlyn baie inligting oor hoe om goeie video’s op te neem. Local teen off to world champs TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

grade 7 learner at Blouberg International School in Parklands jetted off to Amsterdam in the Netherlands to take part in the Hip Hop Unite World Championships.

Sithara Naidoo (13), left the country on Monday 14 October to participate in the competition taking place from tomorrow (Thursday 17 October) to Saturday 19 October at the Events and Convention Centre in Leiden.

Sithara recently received her South African Protea colours for Hip Hop Dance and she is excited to be going to Amsterdam.

She will be joined by her dance partner Ruby Burger from Elkanah House, who also got her colours.

“I have no doubt that this will be a great experience. I feel very proud of myself and I’m preparing very hard for the championships,” she says, explaining that she now has to train for about two to three hours a day.

She trains at B2D Hip Hop Studios in Parklands.

Looking after the environment West Coast Boardriders (WCB) together with the Friends of Blaauwberg Conservation Area (BCA) hosted an event to promote the Green Coast award and a surfing competition at Table View beach front on Saturday 5 October.

Bloubergstrand and Melkbosstrand achieved the Green Coast award last year.

According to Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa), the award recognises those coastal sites which are managed according to standardised criteria and able to maintain a consistent improvement of conditions at the site.

Green Coast sites aim to protect one of three main coastal themes namely; sensitive habitats, species, and cultural heritage.

The surfing competition had divisions including u.15 boys and girls, junior men u.19, masters 40 years and above, as well as the open men and women.

The format allowed for competitors of all ability levels to have fun while competing.

The club has been operating since 2011 and has gained a reputation for putting on professionally run events with a high level of surfing at club level with great support and prizes.

Chair for Friends of BCA, Stephanie Muller, says the event aimed to raise awareness and educate the public on the uniqueness of

the area and the sensitive fauna and flora.

“The area stretching from Big Bay towards Melkbosstrand is being kept in its natural state and is also the first area in South Africa to get the Green Coast status through an initiative by conservation authorities and government.

“Not only does the Friends of Blaauwberg create opportunities such as hikes in order for the community to enjoy the area but are also implementing measures such as solarpowered security cameras in order to make the area safe as well,” says Muller.

WCB surf club is a non-profit organisation with the intention to develop and grow surfing as a sport on the West Coast and also bond the surfing community through all ages and surfing ability.

“One thing that all surfers feel strongly about is the protection of our environment and WCB and its members have truly adapted the World Surf League’s Pure initiative to change their lifestyles and actions to commit to ocean health,” says Muller.

The event also featured Surf4Trash an organisation that really has done a great job over the last few years in educating surfers about plastic pollution. Surf4Trash supplies beach cleaning equipment such as buckets, bags, and gloves for the events and multiple beach clean-ups are done at various beaches.

illie Richards from Blouberg raised over R31 000 in his solo endurance challenge to help ani-

mals.

On Tuesday 10 September, Richards started his challenge from Stellenbosch on a solo, back-to-back, seven-day cycling and a 13-day running endurance adventure with the aim of covering 1 500km in 20 days to raise awareness and funds for African Tails, an animal welfare charity in Brooklyn. The funds raised will be used for mass-sterilisation projects.

Richards started the last leg of his adventure in Franschhoek on Sunday 29 September and ended at Delvera Farm in Stellenbosch.

The unassisted seven-day cycle from Stellenbosch to Plettenberg Bay covered 755km and included most of the Cape Cross route.

Once in Plettenberg Bay, he started his 755km journey back on foot. This trip back home was almost equivalent to running the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon (56km) every day for 13 days.

Dalene Swart from African Tails says what make his challenges even more unusual is that he does 70% of his preparation at sea, where he works in the oil rig maintenance field. “I do most of my running preparation on a 20.9 metre diameter helipad or treadmill with a whole lot of stationary bike cycling and lots of burpees,” he says.

“The only way to prevent this is pro-active intervention through sterilisation of domestic pets and education on humane and basic animal husbandry for their owners. The #WheresWillie2019 Campaign already raised over R31 000 – contributing to 62 sterilisations. This will prevent overpopulation, neglect and suffering of over 3 million unwanted puppies,” she says.

Tip-off leads to huge abalone bust

hanks to a tip-off, Table View police officers arrested a man in possession of shucked abalone worth approximately R1.5 million.

According to the tip-off, the man was travelling in a white BMW X5 on the West Coast Road (R27), direction Table View.

Table View police spokesperson Capt Adriana Chandler says shortly before 11:00 on Thursday 3 October, officers saw the vehicle turning from the R27 onto Blaauwberg Road and followed the vehicle.

“In Porterfield Road in Table View, the driver was instructed to pull to the side of the road and the

officers approached the vehicle with caution. They noticed large plastic bags on the front and back seat of the vehicle and asked the driver to exit the car. Officers also asked permission to search the vehicle and the man obliged,” she says.

Inside the boot, the officers found more bags. The bags were filled with shucked abalone.

“The driver was asked for a permit to transport the abalone, but he failed to produce such document and was arrested,” she says.

The vehicle with the abalone still inside, was taken to Table View police station where the officers con-

tacted the officials from the department of agriculture, forestry and fisheries who counted the abalone.

It amounted to 1 973 units of shucked abalone, with an estimated street value of R1.5 million.

“The officers then decided to go to the home of the suspect in Table View. Permission was granted to search the house and the officers found dried fish and lobster at the home, which were also handed to sea fisheries inspectors,” she says.

The 35-year-old man appeared in the Cape Town magistrate’s court on charges of being in possession of abalone under the Living Marine Resources Act.

Craig Harrison, a 50-year-old man from Table View who went missing on Monday 15 July, has been found dead.

Harrison’s body was discovered by a homeless man in the bushes near Gull Road.

Table View police spokesperson Capt Adriana Chandler confirmed the case.

“The man was found in the bushes by a vagrant and it appears as if he committed suicide. He was found on Monday 16 September,” she says.

After the Pink Ladies organisation confirmed that Harrison was

found dead, messages of condolences streamed in on Facebook.

Romica Rich said on a post: “So sorry to hear, I’ve been checking all the time hoping he’ll be found safe and alive. My very deepest sympathy to his family and friends. May God be your pillow of comfort during your time of mourning. Strongs to his family.”

Judy Binns Nemeth said: “So very sad ... At least now you can all have closure. Sincere condolences to you all.”

Another message of condolence was from Wendy Waterhouse Louw said: “Terrible. RIP. We shared the posts many, many times hoping he would be found alive and well.”

Dan is daar boonop nog mediaopskrifte wat verdere onsekerheid skep.

Hoe bly ’n mens nugter as dit kom by beleggings met opskrifte soos hierdie wat die rondte doen? “Foreigners dump S. African stocks at fastest pace since 2017,” lui een artikel van Bloomberg.

Die aard van die ekonomie is so dat verwagtinge ’n belangrike rol speel in hoe die toekoms uitspeel. Suid-Afrikaners se denke, gesprekke en aksies het dus ’n wesenlike invloed op die omsetsnelheid van ons plaaslike ekonomie, asook ons belastinginkomste. Ons is moontlik naby ’n “punt van maksimum pessimisme”.

Dit is onrealisties om te glo dat buitelanders in Suid-Afrika sal belê, indien Suid-Afrikaners dit nie self wil doen nie.

Ons moet onsself egter afvra hoe die siklus kan verander, wanneer ons die draaipunt in ons eie denke bereik.

Direkte buitelandse belegging is nie noodwendig die risikovrye toevlug waarna almal soek nie. As direkte buitelandse belegging nie as deel van ’n weldeurdagte diversifikasie strategie gebruik word nie, gaan beleggers heel moontlik teleurgesteld wees met die opbrengs. Die volgende wenke kan egter bruikbaar wees.

The opinion article “How do you explain cruel world to child” (TygerBurger 9 October) refers.

As a father of two beautiful daughters, this topic hit me with such impact between the eyes. It is well written but really I am highly concerned: How do I explain crime to them, how do I protect my angels, why must they be deprived from “just being a child”, why?

What goes through a child’s mind when you tell them “no” to certain things.

We grew up (as TarrynLeigh pictured it so well) very well orchestrated – electric fences, dogs, expensive security systems ... – but still we’re not safe. Why? I just read Luke 6 verse 27 and was wondering ... All we can do is pray and pray and trust that God will protect our families especially our children and senior burgers.

Ek wil graag vir Durbanville Glass Centre komplimenteer met die ongelooflike diens wat ek eerstens van Anne, en daarna van Brian ontvang het.

Op Donderdag het ek vir Durbanville Glass Centre geskakel en gevra of hulle asseblief dringend vir my glas vir ’n antieke kas kan sny.

Anne was ontsettend behulpsaam, vriendelik en bekwaam, en ek was só beïndruk met haar diens.

Saterdagoggend het Brian die glas kom installeer en toe hulle vertrek, het hy die opmerking gemaak dat spieëls teen die agterkant van die kas baie mooi sal lyk. Nie net was dit ’n fantastiese idee nie, maar hulle het dit deurgevoer met die hulp van Anne en dit toe kom installeer.

Lanklaas het ek sulke wonderlike diens ontvang van ’n onderneming en ek komplimenteer julle met die vlak van dienslewering.

Table Bay Mall joined forces with Rise Against Hunger Africa, in a bid to pack 50 000 meal packs for hungry South Africans. They surpassed that target by packing 50 112 meals on Saturday 5 October.

The volunteers did this ahead of World Hunger Day, taking place today (Wednesday 16 October)

Volunteers came out in numbers to help pack the meals.

Rise Against Hunger, formerly known as Stop Hunger Now, is an international hunger relief organisation that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable people.

With the goal of eradicating world hunger by 2030, Rise Against Hunger relies on the generosity of corporates for meal sponsorships and the generosity of the public for meal packing.

The mall was of the shopping centres in the Western Cape that decided to become part of the One Million Plus One campaign, spearheaded by Expresso TV presenter, Graeme Richards in partnership with boutique marketing agency, The Blue Room.

Richards has been involved with Rise Against Hunger for a number of years now.

Talking about his involvement in the campaign, he said: “Ten to 20 children die due to starvation every day in South Africa. How can it be that in 2019 we have so many children dying daily on our doorstep, because their parents and caregivers can’t afford to feed them?

“We have to come together, as a nation, to bring an end to these deaths – and through Rise Against Hunger, we’re making progress.”

The marketing manager of Table Bay Mall, Karla Linder said for their mall, it goes beyond “just an event”.

“Thanks to the packathon, 300 children will not go hungry over the next year. It’s a small way in which our mall can make a difference and help Rise Against Hunger get even closer to their goal of ending world hunger by 2030.”

Christmas lights switched on in memory of Ian Ward RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj This year the annual switching on of the Christmas lights at the Bothasig police station will be done in loving memory of a former law enforcement officer and active member of the community – the late Ian Ward.

Ward was also the founder and manager of One FM 94.0 in Table View and hosted the breakfast show. The husband and father of one, passed away as a result of cancer last month.

News of the special dedication to Ian was announced on social media last week by Dave Morley, chairperson of the Bothasig community police forum (CPF).

“He was a major part of this wonderful event. His friendly voice and happy smile will be sincerely missed this year,” Morley wrote on the organisation’s Facebook page.

Asked why the decision was taken to dedicate the event to Ian, Morley responded saying: “Because he always supported the function every year with a mobile broadcast trailer, and as a law enforcement officer he dedicated his time and effort into crime prevention. Our committee decided it would be important to honour him.”

Stacey Robertson, Ian’s fiancé, welcomed the kind gesture. “I am so happy. It was Ian’s favourite time of the year. We loved switching on the lights with them,” she remem-

bers. She says Ian never missed the event for anything. “We used to sit in the cold and wind broadcasting for a few years at the police station’s Christmas switching on of the lights.

“It always made him smile and he was so happy. I am so humbled to know that they are doing this in honour of Ian,” Robertson says.

Louise de Beer, CPF vice-chairperson, says Ian was part of the event right from the beginning. “A lot of us had never heard of One FM, until they became part of this event.

I know it sounds like a cliché, but asked how I remember Ian, the word ‘good guy,’ would describe him well.

“He was the type of person you meet once, but will always remember.

“The one thing that stood out for me about him, was that he never had a bad thing to say about anybody,” De Beer says.

She says the event is also a way for the public to get to know all of the law enforcement roleplayers – from the police to neighbourhood watch members.

Morley says this year visitors will be able to visit stalls at the event, while there will also be a jumping castle, and quad bike rides for the children.

The Christmas lights will be switched on on Saturday 30 November at 17:00.

fter months of preparations all is set at the Montague Arena to host the 2019 World Masters Cricket Series which will run from Saturday 19 to Saturday 26 October.

The 2019 Masters Indoor World Series brings the top action cricket players in the world together under one roof so spectators who are keen to see fabulous international indoor cricket are in for a treat.

Montague Arena will host teams from South Africa, Australia, England, New Zealand, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The South African women are the current reigning champions and will be defending their title.

The competition is played in a couple of different age categories – men as well as women so there will be action to see at Montague Arena between 09:00 and 20:00 every day.

Montague Arena has a proud history of excellence and it is the current recipient of the Action Sports Champion Arena Award (best indoor sports venue in the country).

Montague Arena also won the Best Action Cricket, Best Action Soccer, and Best Kids Party (for Bounce World) venue awards and the owner has no doubt their facilities are ready for a tournament of this magnitude.

Venue owner John Litten says for such

an important event they have been preparing for nine months.

“A lot has been completed and we do have little things to finalise but overall we are ready. We started with a major restroom upgrade at the start of the year where we spent over R 650 000 modernising our bathrooms and followed that with replacing all of our light fittings with state of the art LED lighting which cost R 175 000. This was to ensure that Montague Arena boasts the best lighting on our playing areas in the country,” he says This is not the first time that the Montague Arena has hosted a big event. Previously the Arena hosted a Women’s Test Match in 1995 which was a very successful once-off game between England and South Africa.

Litten says they are extremely excited to be hosting this event as it is a once-in-alifetime opportunity to be involved in a major international sporting event and it also offers them a chance to showcase their venue and what they do, to the general public and to Capetonians who might not know where they are and what they offer.

Montague Arena opened in 1991 and has grown over the past 28 years to be the premier indoor sporting venue in the country. “ Sports that we conduct include action cricket, action netball, action soccer, action hockey as well as dodge ball and bubble soccer.

“Daar is ’n paar oomblikke in die film waar die pa sy humeur verloor met sy dogter, en ek wou hê dat die tonele reg moes wees, sodat dit die boodskap duidelik kon oordra dat hierdie twee mense op ’n realistiese manier vir mekaar omgee,” sê Affleck.

“Dit was ook belangrik om beide kante van my karakter te balanseer. Aan die een kant is die pa vol selfvertroue dat hy in staat is

om vir Rag te sorg, haar te beskerm en haar groot te maak.

“Hy is egter ook eensaam en voel baie keer paniekerig. Om alles in een karakter te verweef op die grootskerm, was baie interessant.”

National Asphalt (Pty) Ltd intends to expand their existing asphalt production operation at the Portland Quarry plant, Vissershok, Cape Town.

The existing asphalt plant site is located on the property of the Portland Quarry and Crushing facility known as Portion 8 of the Farm No.1098 Cape RD, Diep River, Durbanville region. There is an increased need for asphalt to supply the national, provincial and municipal road infrastructure improvement scheme in the region.

Notice is hereby given in terms of the amended NEMA Regulations of 7 April 2017 of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998). The following activities as listed in Listing 1 of the NEMA 2014 (as amended) Regulations might be triggered: Activity 34: An amended atmospheric emission licence will be required.

Activity 51: The storage capacity of dangerous goods will exceed 80 tons Activity 59: The daily processing capacity of a petroleum product will exceed the 50 ton threshold.

A Basic Assessment Report will be conducted for submission to the Western Cape Province Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning. National Asphalt (Pty) Ltd has appointed Chameleon Environmental as independent environmental consultants to undertake the application process on their behalf.

rackenfell en Kraaifontein – twee gewese krieketklubs van die Boland wat sedert verlede seisoen by die WP-unie geïnkorporeer is – was onder die groot uitblinkers in die afgelope naweek se 20/20wedstryde in die topligas van die WP. Die Brakke en Kraaie was Saterdag en Sondag albei in al drie hul wedstryde aan die wenkant. Brackenfell het met behulp van Morné Willemse (42) vir Rondebosch met 5 paaltjies gekou en het daarna ook Victoria met 7 paaltjies verslaan, met Jackie Strauss (43) mooi op stryk.

Sondag is Langa ’n loesing met 10 paaltjies

toegedien, met die beste bydraes deur Ruan Vlok (46*) en Johan Loubser (3/13).

Craig Ephraim (3/14) was aan die voorpunt van die Kraaifontein-boulers, wat hul span met 12 lopies teen Primrose laat wen het, waarna ook Milnerton op verrassende wyse met 7 paaltjies verslaan is.

Ephraim het 80* vir die Kraaie aangeteken. Sondag is ook Kuilsrivier met 22 lopies geklop, met die beste bydraes deur Garth Madden (45) en Robin Petersen (43*).

Die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland (UWK) en Durbanville het ook ’n voorspoedige naweek beleef. UWK het Bellville met 7 paaltjies getroef, ondanks Schaughn van Greunen (57) se knap kolfwerk vir Bellville,

en het daarna vir Claremont met 6 paaltjies afgestof met behulp van Romano Ramoo (60) en Josh Schippers (54) se bydraes.

Durbanville het ’n wegholsege van 104 lopies oor Strandfontein verseker danksy die flitsende kolwe van Leon le Roux en Jean Marais (albei 75). En daarna het die Durbies ook UWK se wenbui gestuit toe André Malan (3/19 en 38*) gehelp het om die studentespan met 6 paaltjies te klop.

Bellville het, ondanks stewige bydraes deur Justin Dill (52*) en Dewald Botha (40), ook met 5 paaltjies teen WP-klub vasgeval, maar het daarna vir Strandfontein met 9 paaltjies gelooi. Dill (80*) en Van Greunen (45) het ’n aanvangsvennootskap van 90 lo-

Big medal haul for Brackenfell Brackenfell Shotokan Karate Academy recently competed at the Boland Dragons Karate League at Noordeind Primary School in Paarl. Thirty-nine students competed winning a total of 57 medals of which 24 were gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze.

AWA: TOP WRESTLERS TO ENTERTAIN CROWD

he Africa Wrestling Alliance (AWA) in conjunction with Top Stars Wrestling Federation (TSW) are proud to announce the Collision Tour. The best of AWA will take on the best of TSW when two worlds collide.

Following on from their joint venture and success of streaming the first live South African professional wrestling show on FITE.tv, AWA and TSW are planning on bringing top class wrestling to the rest of South Africa.

The first show on the tour will be taking place on 30 October at the Grand Arena, GrandWest Casino.

Current plans are for shows on the Collision Tour to be broadcast across various media platforms, details of which will be announced once they are confirmed, so fans need not worry about missing any of the action.

“TSW is honoured and proud to be associated with AWA. Together we aim to restore wrestling to its original form, just bigger and better. The Collision Tour serves as our first step towards this goal,” said Ajay Haripersad, the owner of TSW. Shaun Koen, the owner of AWA, is excited about the tour.

“AWA is proud to be working with TSW as we represent South African professional wrestling on this nationwide tour. The AWA roster is filled with both veterans and youngsters that are hungry and eager to show the world what wrestling in South Africa is capable of”.

Haripersad has amassed a world class roster of international talent that are making their way to South Africa to take on the best local talent.

These wrestlers will include second generation wrestler Wes Brisco, former WWE star Monster Tarver, current Ring of Honor Women’s Champion Kelly Klein and All Africa Heavyweight Champion Congo King.

Koen in return has put together a roster filled with some of the best and most experienced wrestlers in the country.

This includes AWA veteran Johnny Palazzio, amateur wrestling champion Steve Eeden, talented youngster Mike Xander and former national champion Ananzi.

To face Kelly Klein, Shaun also managed to find a worthy opponent in the form of former Impact Wrestling and WWE NXT wrestler, Amber Nova.

These two seasoned competitors will face each other at both shows.

Superstar Gatlin glitzes up Green Point Young athletes between eight and 13 from all over Cape Town gathered at Green Point Athletics Stadium on Saturday 12 October for Western Province Athletics’ “Little Athletics” event and open event.

The occasion was made all the more special with the presence of three-time Olympic gold medallist Justin Gatlin, who along with fellow Olympian Sharrieffa Barksdale, were on the lookout for the best young athletic talent to form part of their Born 2 Be Elite programme.

The annual Little Athletics series started on Saturday, 28 September at Vygieskraal.

These events introduce children to track and field activities and offer a series of competitions that promote a “be your best” attitude.

The emphasis is on fun, participation, performance and improving technique.

The aim of the programme reflects WPA’s mission and particularly focuses on promoting positive attitudes and a healthy lifestyle through family and community involvement in athletic activities.

Born 2 Be Elite, has a vision to build a long-term programme that creates an international “speed” community, with South

The long-term programme is to cultivate grassroots sports programmes in community hubs, as well as developing an elite squad through the latest technology.

Gatlin and Barksdale wowed crowds, with Gatlin vowing that they aim to expand the programme locally. “We have a couple of ideas we want to bring to light for Born to be Elite, to partner with other athletes as well to be able to enrich the programme here,” he says, adding that the local hospitality has had him awestruck.

“I am loving it here, this is like a second home to me,” he added, before providing some wisdom for young athletes to hold true to. Keep believing in yourself. Keep dream-

ing. Don’t let anyone take your dream away from you. It’s going to be hard sometimes and like the sun, there is also the rain. Remember the hard times and keep believing in yourself.”
