‘Nippers’ ‘Nippers’ in full swing

The junior class of the Milnerton Lifesaving Club, the Nippers, started their training recently. With no competitions on the horizon, the club has time to train more lifeguards. Last week saw the start of a new Junior Lifeguard award class. These juniors will hopefully be lifeguards on Millies beach next summer.

S

uperheroes in Bloubergstrand bravely wearing the “L” on their chest were applauded after saving a woman from drowning over the weekend. The Big Bay Lifeguards responded to a drowning in front of Pakalolo in Table View on Sunday, saving a 24-year-old woman reported to be in trouble and drifting out to sea. According to the Big Bay Lifesaving Club, first responders Dylan Lloyd entered the water followed by Kyle Reynolds, Logan Smithers, Wesley Oakes, Luke Batty and Damien Kennedy.

“The young lady was located and returned safely to shore where she received medical attention and was taken off to hospital. Big Bay Lifesaving Club is so proud of these young men and commend them in their amazing response time. Another drowning prevented by our lifeguards,” they said on social media. Volunteers at the Table View Neighbourhood Watch (TVNW) also assisted and responded to the scene. Laura Outhet, TVNW media liaison, says one of the volunteers received a phonecall from a family member about a young woman who was experiencing some difficulties in the water at Bloubergstrand. “T

he stench is unbearable and complaining to the City of Cape Town is useless. Something needs to be

done.” These are the words of a fuming resident in Montague Gardens Sarah Pickcard, who claims that a cloud of bad odour is hanging in the Milnerton area, allegedly coming from the Potsdam wastewater treatment works (PWWTW). According to Pickard and other concerned residents in the area, they are uncertain what is causing the stench. “The smell will make anyone want to pack away their lunch and go about their day. We have received no communication from the City or any other companies in surrounding areas as to what is causing the bad odour. However, when we drive past Potsdam, it seems that this is where it’s coming from,” Pickcard says. The City released a statement last week, saying that contractors are in the process

“Bloubergstrand is notorious for its strong rip current and epic sand bank drop off zone. Unfortunately the woman was caught in the rip zone and was quickly being washed out to sea. In this case, seconds and minutes definitely count. The TVNW member who received the phonecall quickly used the TVNW radio network to get hold of our control room and alert other volunteers as to what was happening. Control room and various volunteers mobilised quickly. Community Medics were quickly informed and they worked on getting their volunteers to the scene as quickly as possible,” Outhet told Tyger-

Eskom is fully cognisant of the risk of corrosion of civil structures at the Koeberg Power Station, which is a result of the station being located in a corrosive environment. This Eskom says in a statement as ongoing testing on the Koeberg containment buildings, which house the reactor and associated nuclear components, have proven the structures to be capable of withstanding the most severe accident. “The tests comprise quarterly and annual measurements to identify any abnormal movement (such as expansions, settling,

of removing sludge stockpiled at PWWTW, and the disruption of the stockpile is causing a bad odour, as anticipated. “The City regrets the discomfort to residents, and every effort is being made to suppress the smell while the work is underway,” the City says in their statement. Removal of the stockpile in the sludge pond commenced on 28 January, and all sludge that could be directly loaded onto trucks was removed by 3 February. The City says that during those six days, over 1 000 tons of sludge cake was removed from the sludge pond stockpile, and this included all stockpiled primary sludge cake. “All the water contained in the sludge cake stockpile moved to the bottom of the pond over time, and therefore the remaining sludge in the pond was too wet to be removed by truck immediately. Further processing was required to ensure that the sludge is sufficiently dry to be transported by truck. This process is time-consuming and does release odour, which is contributing to the ongoing odour around the plant,” the City explains.

Burger. A law enforcement marine auxiliary officer, who is a TVNW volunteer, was on patrol at the time and heard the call come over the TVNW radio network of a drowning in progress. He rushed to the beachfront to assist. “Upon arrival he assessed the scene and made the vital decision to enter the frigid, Bloubergstrand waters. He swam against strong currents for about 300m to retrieve the young woman. A few minutes later our volunteer was joined by life guards and they instinctively entered from another direction and swam toward the distressed female. Our volunteer and the life guards simultaneously converged on the female and hauled her out of the icy sea,” Outhet says.

Odour suppression and masking have continued throughout the removal operation. This has been ongoing since 4 February, and removal of the remaining sludge, which is expected to be fully processed/dry, began on 13 February. This should see a reduction in odours. “It is envisaged that the pond will be completely cleaned out in approximately two weeks. Furthermore, it is also noted though that the trucks disposing the sludge do have a very strong odour and are probably the cause of some significant odour along its route to the disposal site. The plant has requested the drivers of the vehicles transporting sludge to hose the vehicles down before leaving the site, which should also further aid in reducing odours in the area,” says the City in its statement. The City also apologised for the severe impact and inconvenience caused by the odours. “Every effort is being made to clear the rest of the sludge that is too wet to transport as soon as possible.”

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) was also alerted and began prepping their watercraft and rescue teams. “The lifeguards brought the female safely to the beach where medical treatment was initiated for non-fatal drowning symptoms, exhaustion and hypothermia,” the NSRI says in a statement. The 24-year-old woman from Bloubergstrand was transported to hospital by Netcare 911 ambulance and she is expected to make a full recovery. “The NSRI commends the swift reaction of the lifeguards and the law enforcement officer. Their cooperation contributed to saving the young lady from drowning. This is the 69th person who we are aware of who has been rescued with the assistance of a pink rescue buoy.”

etc.), visual inspections to identify physical degradation (such as cracks, spalling, efflorescence) and by performing the integrated leak rate tests (ILRT) on a 10-yearly basis. The results of the ILRTs have shown conclusively that the design functions of the containment buildings are met. The test results of the ILRT were also compared with international plants of similar design and it was found to be in-line with industry norms. “The ILRT represents the worst case accident scenario and proves the containment buildings to be capable of withstanding the

most severe accident,” Eskom says. The main concern to the long term system health of the containment buildings is the deterioration of the externally exposed concrete surfaces due to chloride ingress that causes reinforcement corrosion and the potential effect on the prestressing tendons. The information from the ongoing testing, inspections and maintenance is included in the assessments being implemented as part of the work required for Koeberg’s life extension and Eskom remains confident that the issue is fully under control.

City advises of water supply disruption The City of Cape Town’s water and sanitation department will be conducting zero pressure tests on the main water supply in the Sunningdale, Blouberg, Table View and Parklands areas. The tests took place yesterday (Tuesday 16 February) and will also be conducted tomorrow, Thursday 18 February. This will result in the disruption of water supply to these areas from 19:00 until 02:00 the following morning. Residents are however advised to prepare, where possible, by storing water in clean, sealed containers. “Zero pressure tests are part of the City’s roll-out of pressure management infrastructure. Advanced pressure management allows the City to reduce pressure fluctuations in the network that create stress on pipes over time. This reduces the likelihood of leaks and bursts. The test is done to determine if there are any unmapped inflows into an area to inform the calibration of a pressure reducing valve, which will be installed at a later date,” the City said in a statement. Residents are also advised to make sure that their taps are closed during this period to prevent any water loss or water damage when the supply is restored.

Rotary Club donates packages T

he Rotary Club of Blouberg recently raised funds within 48 hours to donate 110 care packages to Milnerton Mediclinic. This after various hospitals have put out appeals to charities within their areas, asking if they could assist with care packages, containing some treats and sustenance to help through their long shifts. Lynne Wade from the club says during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, healthcare workers have been working tirelessly around the clock, seven days a week. “In Milnerton, Michelle Korevaar from Change Makers Hub (CMH) reacted to Milnerton Mediclinic’s plea and asked the local community to assist with donations. CMH is a non-profit organisation that connects people with causes who need help, catalysing change between everyday people who want to help to those who need it the most,” Wade says. In addition, another additional 40 care packages were packed for Tygerberg Hospital as part of a joint project between the Rotary Clubs of Blouberg, Oostenberg, Bellville, Durbanville, Tygerberg

and Goodwood. “For only R70, one care package containing a 500ml Energade, a coffee, hot chocolate, a cappuccino sachet, a packet of biscuits, a bag of jelly sweets, a bag of peanuts and raisins and some hand cream, together with a thank you note – can make a small difference to a tired healthcare worker, letting them know that we care and that we appreciate their dedication and hard work,” Wade says. Following the success of this project, The Rotary Club of Blouberg will continue raising funds, together with CMH, in an effort to provide care packages to the healthcare workers at other hospitals. “This month we want to donate to staff at the Brooklyn Chest Hospital, the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital ICU and the Fresenius Medical Care dialysis centre,” Wade told TygerBurger. If anyone would like to make a donation to continue providing care packages for health workers, or to find out more about the Rotary Club of Blouberg, visit their Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/pg/rotaryclubblouberg.

SLICE OF LIFE

Min het ek toe geweet ek sal my vandag binne-in daardie debat bevind. Feit is, katte jag. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned! Want so ’n foto wil ek nooit weer kry of sien nie. Dalk KWV. – Werner van Tonder

felt at home. Farewell Newlands, thank you for everything. NIKITA SCHRONEN e-mail

“The sweetest part of leaving home is knowing that, beyond a shadow of a doubt, you’ll always carry it with you.” A day I was dreading the most has come. On Saturday 23 January the last game of rugby was played at Newlands. It wasn’t the best game from the home team, but the past 133 years have been nothing short of magical. From seeing the likes of Corné Krige and Morne du Plessis run out to seeing the young guns of Jean-Luc du Plessis and Chris van Zyl running out of the oldest stadium in South Africa Newlands had it all. It had tears, it had laughter, it had lots of stressful moments, but most importantly, it was the home of many memories. It was the place where Chester Williams would break through the opposition defence on his way to the try line. It was the place where Schalk Burger could not wait to go into “Hulk mode” and tackle everybody in his way. It was the place where I watched my very first rugby game. How do you say goodbye to a place that’s like home? Newlands, thank you for being the best home anyone could have ever asked for. You gave me memories that I’ll carry in my heart forever - from my first time as a fan, when the flag was bigger than me, to my last time sitting in the stands when I attended the funeral of Chester Williams. They say home is not a place, it is a feeling. Every time I visited you, I

MARIANA VAN WYK Parow

Adventure athlete publishes book ESMÉ ERASMUS

D

urbanville-based adventure athlete, Jamie Marais has summited many a challenge – the latest publishing an autobiography about his adventure endeavours. His book, Determination, his first, was published in December. Marais (44), a corporate accounts manager, became known for his participation in extreme adventures – from summiting Table Mountain 22 times in 28 hours over two days in August 2016, almost twice the height of Everest, in support of the Sabrina Love Foundation for special needs children, to mountain biking 360km non-stop in 36 hours among the Big Five in Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape in August last year – the first and only person to do this. He was metres away from the white rhino cow Thandi – famous for her survival of a poacher attack in March 2012 – and her young calf. “It was fascinating that she allowed me as a human to ride up to her. I looked her in the eyes and it was as if I felt a deep connection that we were not there to harm each other, but definitely one of my scariest moments,” he says. He also had to stop right in his tracks when faced by the massive

bull elephant Charlie, only 10 metres away. “After the ride there was an incredible moment. Three rhinos came up right to our car, as if to say thank you. One of the rangers said he never saw that in more than 30 years.” Marais raised almost R500 000 for rhino conservation and feeding impoverished communities with this extreme adventure. He also summited Lions Head 12 times in only 12 hours in June 2016, climbing 5 600 vertical metres. The most extreme, however, was when he cycled Sani Pass in Lesotho in 2018 in gale force winds and extreme weather at an altitude of 3 000m, summiting five times in 12 hours. “I ended up hypothermic after 12 hours in freezing weather and we actually nearly ended up being stranded on the pass due to terrible weather. “To persevere, I have a few mantras and things I focus on. I often repeat the words ‘I can, I will. I can do this, I will do this’. Its amazing how much stronger you become just by saying those words. As you say it, you hear it, and as you hear it, you believe it,” he says. Another of his scariest moments was in 2015 when he was blown out to sea by a strong wind while pad-

dling with a stand up paddle (SUP) in Cape Town. “The ocean was out of control. I was paddling without a wetsuit and was blown off my board a few times. I almost drowned in five metre swells, but in the end I paddled through it.” Although his list of adventures

Canada. He went across and looked at the opportunity but decided not to pursue it. “Despite the challenges, South Africa is really great. I came back with an appreciation for what we have here and also an awareness of the challenge we face,” he says. “I wanted to do something that could help people believe in themselves and realise that nothing is ever too big to face and overcome,” he says. The feedback on his book was incredible, Marais says. “It brings a message of hope and of overcoming your challenges.” The first edition was sold out in four weeks and is now being reprinted. Ever since he has been regularly invited as motivational speaker. He is now busy with a sequel to his book, which focuses mainly on his “Jamie Rides 4 Rhinos” mountain biking adventure in Kariega Game Reserve. “This book will tell the story of my epic adventure, but if my first book was about finding the silver lining, this one is about taming the beast, facing your fears and making the best of your circumstances,” he says. V The book can be ordered on his website at jamiemarais.com and will soon be available in bookshops.

Take the vaccine, urges nurse: Nurse Thembeka Goba from Karl Bremer Hospital who spent 25 days in hospital with Covid-19 at the start of the pandemic urges people to get vaccinated (when it becomes available). The mother of three developed flu-like symptoms and visited her pharmacy where she bought medication. She soon realised that this was something different. Soon after her symptoms progressed, she visited her local doctor again and was hospitalised with severe pneumonia. Goba was admitted to Tygerberg Hospital where she spent time in the intensive care unit on high-flow oxygen before being transferred to a ward. Goba made a full recovery and says she is optimistic that the vaccine will reduce her risk.

are impressive, his book is not about his achievements, but his life journey and how he learned to train his mind to always see the silver lining in every dark cloud. “My book takes the reader on a journey and into some of the most intense, inspiring and life-changing moments I have experienced and shares the life lessons learned from each of those experiences. I also share many practical tips and tools on how people can help themselves to overcome challenges and harness their inner strength,” he says.

Free antenatal care available From 13 to 21 February is Pregnancy Education Week and the City of Cape Town’s health department is encouraging women to visit their clinics for antenatal care. “It is important that women attend antenatal care as soon as they find out they are pregnant, preferably before 14 weeks of pregnancy. This helps to ensure the pregnancy and birth is a positive experience,” said Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien. Antenatal care at public health clinics is free and pregnant women are encouraged to attend all antenatal visits, scheduled every four weeks to 28 weeks of pregnancy, thereafter every two weeks to 36 weeks, then weekly until the delivery.

It is important to return to the clinic immediately when experiencing any of the following symptoms: abdominal pain (not discomfort), blurred vision, liquid (amniotic fluid) leaking from the vagina, persistent headache, reduced foetal movements or vaginal bleeding. To ensure a safe pregnancy and healthy baby, it is important to eat healthy meals and to do safe physical activities. Pregnant women should abstain from smoking, using illegal drugs and drinking alcohol. Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of pre-term labour, low birth weight, and birth defects of the mouth and lip (cleft palate). Smoking during, and after pregnancy also increases the risk of infant death syndrome. The use of illegal drugs during

pregnancy increases the risk of pre-term labour, low birth weight, and developmental delays in the child. Drinking alcohol while pregnant can harm the unborn baby, and cause birth defects known as Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Disease (FASD). When a pregnant woman drinks alcohol it goes into her bloodstream and to the unborn baby. Alcohol damages the unborn baby’s growing body and brain resulting in many types of birth defects. FASD is permanent. No alcohol for mom during pregnancy means no FASD for baby. Poppekas verruil verhoog vir radio RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

D

Technology used to connect patients with loved ones Due to hospital visitations not being allowed to limit the risk of possible Covid-19 transmission, staff at Karl Bremer Hospital have come up with an innovative idea. Here tablets are now being used to connect patients with their families. Patients can chat to their friends and family by means of a video call. “The tablet has given the patient the opportunity to speak to and see their loved ones without any obstacles and, by doing so, there has been an optimistic response from both sides,” says Denise Barnes, assistant nursing manager. Barnes says technology has greatly improved the way the hospital team communicates, especially during the pandemic. “When taking into account the visiting

policy under the current regulations, not only does it protect the patient, but their loved ones too. The use of tablets within our wards has ensured continuous communication between the patient and their family at home, as being away from home and unable to see your loved ones tends to have a toll on the overall recovery of a patient, which ultimately leads to a negative bed flow within our busy units,” Barnes says. She says the use of tablets has given patients and staff a sense of hope as they continue to fight Covid-19. “It has definitely been a rewarding feeling to see how thankful our patients and their relatives are, and we remain hopeful that the circumstances we are living in will change in the near future,” Barnes says.

‘Drop 10’ club helps those in need

Hospital carer Mina Voster helps resident Megan Grace connect with her family while she is hospitalised.

The Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust’s Drop 10 membership club – a club designed for professionals who want to play an active role in supporting the trust in its work, and positively impacting the lives of children cared for at the hospital – is still being well supported after being launched a year ago. Prof Johan Smith, founder, says by joining the club, he and his peers are able to make a measurable impact and drive change for the better. “Joining the club is a no-brainer for me; by donating a portion of my income to a cause that I am already involved with, and because the trust is a registered public benefit organisation, I am able to claim back benefits from Sars and directly see the impact of my donation in the work that the trust does,” says Smith. The club is a programme for professionals who contribute a portion of their annual salary, and in exchange receive a Section 18A certificate for tax relief. This

is an annual membership whereby the member may participate with other club members in specific campaigns. The club is unique to the trust whereby members are afforded influence in supporting the trust’s work far beyond just making a donation, a spokesperson for the trust says. “The purpose of the club is to encourage professionals to play an active role in social initiatives beyond just monetary support to a cause, but actively engaging and participating in social upliftment. “The member’s donation and effort through the membership club goes towards the care of 60% of the province’s children who fall within the hospital’s care footprint, the hundreds of children actually visiting our hospital and its school and the impact we are able to bring to the communities of people that support them,” the spokesperson says. WOMEN’S SPORT: GROWTH NEEDED

Former pro uplifting female footballers REMO ANDREWS

Scintillating start to season The 2021 Western Cape Rotax Max Challenge karting season exploded to life on a typically searing Cape February day thankfully punctuated by an occasional breeze at Killarney on Saturday 13 February. The action was just as hot on track in a day of contrasts that saw both a bit of domination as well as some cracking fights for glory through the afternoon. Senior Max was surely the race of the day as Andrew Rackstraw took the overall win without winning a heat. In a dramatic afternoon, pole man and South African champion Tate Bishop exited the first race early, leaving Jason Coetzee to storm to the win from Rackstraw and Kyle Visser. Bishop then took advantage of a fraught five-way fight ahead of him to move up from the back and pounce for the lead and make off for the second race win over Kyle Visser, while Rackstraw and Storm Lanfear pulled a last lap move on Charl Visser for third and fourth. Bishop then took care of early leaders Rackstraw and Coetzee to make off for another heat win in the final, but Charl Visser’s day went from bad to worse when he exited after coming from behind to second to release Rackstraw, Kyle Visser and Lanfear after Coetzee was stripped of third for his part in Visser’s demise. That meant that Rackstraw took the day from Kyle Visser, Lanfear, the troubled Charl Visser and Coetzee. It was a different matter in DD2, where Joseph Oelz came, saw and conquered on his DD2 debut for his return to karting following a year away. Joseph put it on pole position and steamed away to a trio of race wins, with a fastest lap each time over reigning South African champion Sebastian Boyd. Behind them, Masters winner Conor Hughes kept the battling Jared Jordan, Andrew Thomas and Michael Jordan at bay for third overall, ahead of a splendid dice between Steve Beaumont, newcomer Rafe Tayler, Andre Steenkamp and rookie Gil Simoes.

It was a case of more domination when WP Mini champion Reza Levy put a season of quietly learning the bigger class to great use as he troubled the Senior frontrunners en route to a compelling high school Junior Max win. The constantly improving Matthew Wadeley however left Killarney with a new Junior Max lap record as he made Levy work for his final win. Wadeley also held Ethan Stier off for second overall with two heat seconds to Stier’s one with Jaden Jacobs fourth from Joshua Smit and Joaquin de Oliveira, both of whom later concentrated on their Mini Max afternoons. De Oliveira had a brilliant day in senior primary Mini Max as he made off up front to deliver a clean sweep with three fastest laps too. He left his rivals to fight it out among themselves as the top five each had a turn on the podium through the day in a great start to the Mini Max season. Out of town visitor Erich Heystek improved through the day to deliver a fine come from behind third in heat 2, before going one better to take second for the day by a point from Joshua Smit and another ever-improving local Jordon Wadeley, Keagen Beaumont, Jude Stuart, Ethan Deacon and Oliver Roach. While those three races saw domination, junior primary Micro Max was on the other hand once

again most entertaining. Kegan Martin overcame Dale Hobbs to win the first race but hit trouble in race 2, before bouncing back to pass Hobbs early and drive off to the final heat win. That was not enough to stoop Hobbs from taking the day from Martin, while Aiden Beaumont overcame a tight battle through the day to beat Eric Norman to third. They came home ahead of a most entertaining day long wrought between Matthew Roach, Matthew Chiwara and Siyabonga Ntuli for fifth. Michael Danks meanwhile laid early claim to the 2021 WP baby Bambino title with yet another dominant pole, triple race wins and a triple fastest lap run en route to the win for the day. Impressive Jozi rookie visitor Kayde Cornofsky diced all the way with Siyabonga Ntuli on their way to second and third. And John Norman pinched a podium third in the final heat en route to fourth from Ruan Lewis and Liam Wharton. The opening round of the Northern Regions Rotax Max Challenge is next up at the Formula K Raceway on 6 March, before the second round of the KZN regionals at iDube on 14 March. Then follows the first 2021 Rotax Max National back at Killarney on 26 March 2021. All races remain scheduled to continue without spectators under lockdown regulations.

idea to Cape Town. “My primary goal is to encourage women empowerment through the sport. We want to nurture talent but also promote a healthy overall lifestyle. Whether you are a great footballer already or are just starting we have something to offer everyone,” she said. This ethos is very much in line with her father’s original idea. “Our vision is to reach as many young potential female footballers as we can and to provide them with an education other than academic, such as life skills, entrepreneurial skills, and financial planning skills, to create a culture of equality, empowerment and hope for a brighter future for female athletes in South Africa.” Bantwana will have their first tournament at Fives Futbol at Bayside Mall in Blouberg on Sunday 28 February.

he Bantwana College nonprofit company launched in Cape Town on Sunday 14 February, at Fives Futbol at Bayside Mall in Blouberg. Bantwana was founded by Cape Town native, Theo Buttress in Gauteng with the aim of improving the development of women’s football in the country. A former professional footballer in the 80s, Buttress recognised a lack of football development in women’s football when his three daughters took an interest in the game but found that there was a lack of opportunity for them. Buttress said, “All three of my daughters love the game, we saw it as a family activity we all could enjoy. My wife is also an avid footballer so when I found so little opportunity and resources for them to play the game regularly I felt it was my duty to do something about it.” When his oldest daughter, Angelique Buttress, moved back to Cape Town after completing her Sports Science degree at the University of Pretoria, she decided to expand her father’s Angelique, Maizie and Theo Buttress.
