MILNERTON: ABDUCTION NOT REAL

Film shoot gone wrong KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels

W

hat has now come to light as an informal film shoot had many residents in Milnerton and surrounds stunned after what was believed to be an abduction scene. Residents were up in arms last week amid a “kidnapping” involving a Citi Golf and later discovered that a local film crew was behind the ordeal. According to the Milnerton Crime Watch, after the woman was allegedly “abducted” on Ixia Street last week, the vehicle returned to the area and continued filming. “All indications are that this was an informal video shoot and not an actual incident,”

they say. The watch added that it is a municipal requirement that any film shoot taking place in a public area requires a permit for exactly this reason. “To prevent alarming a community and taking up precious resources to further the investigation in the public interest, all movie shoots within the City of Cape Town will be properly marked, co-ordinated and have a permit on hand. “That’s the point of the permit office. Please, if you see a movie shoot in progress –– even if it’s an informal Youtube type thing – ensure that those in charge of this have a permit,” they say. The Milnerton Crime Watch has since encouraged people to embrace technology and

stretch their creativity, but it must be conducted with public safety in mind and the appropriate steps followed to keep community role players informed. “We consider the matter closed as does the police who have closed their inquiry on this matter with similar conclusion.” Residents in Table View said on social media that the same scenario happened a few weeks ago and the film crew failed to provide a permit. Samantha Lewies, a resident, says that this behaviour is not only subject to Milnerton and Table View areas, but happens all over. “These types of illegal filming is unacceptable. “Vloggers and Youtubers portray these

horrible scenes in public without informing anyone that it is not real. We are living in dangerous times and take everything seriously nowadays, especially when it comes to crime. Stop joking around and take other people into consideration,” Lewies explains. The City of Cape Town says film permits are required for all film-related activity which includes commercials, feature films, documentaries, micro shoots, music videos, short films, stills photography, student projects, TV films and productions and TV pilots or series. “You do not need a film permit when filming a wedding ceremony or private celebration or when filming current affairs or news for immediate release,” the City says. More people opt for Ivermectin treatment DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

W

ith the imminent threat of a third wave of the pandemic and much uncertainty about the vaccine rollout, more and more people are turning to what they see as their only option: Ivermectin an antiparasitic veterinary medicine. In South Africa the product is not registered for use in humans yet, as is the case in countries such as India and Brazil where it is indicated for use against tropical diseases in humans. However, the Gauteng High Court in February held that doctors are now allowed to import the human formulation of the medicine to treat patients with Ivermectin at their own discretion, but only after having applied to do so in terms of a section 21 application of the Medicines and Related Substances Control Act. In Cape Town, you don’t have to venture out far to find roundtable discussions about the prevalence of the use of the product (in its animal formulation). Personal anecdotes are plenty, and mostly positive. Local businessman Nicky Swart from Joostenbergvlakte started using Ivermectin three months ago as a preventative measure and has experienced no side effects. He says he fears Covid much more than he fears Ivermectin and has much confidence in the medicine. Working in the farming industry, he was supplied with a small bottle of Ivermectin by a nearby farmer since the drug is sold out at most farming cooperatives. “I’m getting on in years and it scares me to read in every newspaper and hear of so many people dying every day of Covid. I use it mainly as a preventative measure. There is nothing else I can take at this stage, so I will gladly take my chances with Ivermectin. I feel great,” he says. He says he is aware of many people who are using it as a preventative measure. A local health care worker, who does not want to be identified, also started dosing herself with Ivermectin about a month ago, following her own spat with Covid-19. “I never want to have Covid again. Lucki-

Jewellery store robbed A jewellery store at a shopping centre in Table View became the target of armed robbers on Sunday 21 February shortly after lunch time. According to Table View police spokesperson Capt Adriana Chandler, two armed men entered the store, while another remained at the entrance. “The two employees were threatened with firearms and demands were made. The brazen robbers left with jewellery and cash. They fled in a silver Mercedes,” Chandler said. No arrests have yet been made and an investigation is currently underway. Station commander Col Lindiwe Dyantyi is asking anyone with information to contact Table View police station at 021 521 3300 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111. “Victim support is offered free of charge by trained volunteers for anyone who has experienced trauma due to crime. Please contact Table View police station to arrange an appointment,” Dyantyi said.

Electricity hike causes concern KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels

S

ocial media has been abuzz over the recent announcement of the 15% electricity hike which will take effect on 1 April. Residents say the electricity increase will have a huge impact on their pockets as many have lost their jobs due to Covid-19. Eskom says they note and respect the order by the high court on the tariff adjustment for the new financial year. “This order will result in an average price increase of approximately 15% in the electricity tariff for standard tariff customers starting on 1 April. This court decision allows Eskom to recover efficiently incurred costs for the production of electricity. It also contributes to the ‘user pay’ principle and

FROM PAGE 1 When to apply for a permit You will need a permit if your shoot: . interrupts traffic on municipal roads or pedestrians on sidewalks; . requires wires or cables running across or over sidewalks or municipal roads; . requires the use of generators, tripods or dollies on sidewalks or municipal roads; . impacts on public use of, or access to, public parking areas, community facilities, beaches, public open spaces and nature reserves under City management or . generates noise and air pollution. There are two processes individuals will have to undergo in order to be able to apply for a film permit – registering as a production company or commercial photographer, and apply for a permit using the City’s online film permit system. Production companies will be required to comply with the following actions: . All staff, cast and crew must be screened daily at the start of each shift/ shoot. A record of each person’s daily temperature should also be kept. . Cloth masks or face shields must be provided for cast and crew. . Covid-19 awareness information, including workplace protocols, must be displayed in common areas and copies provided to all staff. . Ensure that 70% alcohol-based hand sanitiser is made available for all cast, crew and service providers on sets and workspaces. . Only necessary permitted people should be allowed on set. . Sets/workspaces must be disinfected regularly before and after filming. . The number of people on set must not exceed 50 people as per the Arts and Culture Ministry directions. . Workplace equipment and props must be disinfected before they are returned to storage or service providers. For more information on filming permits, send an email to film.permit@capetown.gov.za.

is likely to lessen the financial burden of supporting Eskom on the government, releasing the government to focus on other priorities,” Eskom says. However, not everyone welcomes this decision. The public took their concerns to social media. “We are just scraping by due to Covid, and now the government wants to take more of our money? Money we don’t even have! This is ridiculous. Why is this electricity hike necessary?” a post on Facebook reads. Eskom says the electricity increase will allow them to move towards addressing some of the revenue shortfalls. will help to improve Eskom’s financial sustainability. . The public has urged Eskom to explain in detail how the disadvantaged residential areas will survive this increase. Eskom’s CEO, Calib Cassim, says poor re-

sidential customers will continue to be supported through the free basic electricity programme, as well as affordability subsidies provided for in the Nersa tariff decision. “Identified vulnerable industrial sectors will be considered by Nersa in terms of the short-term and long-term negotiated pricing agreements promulgated recently by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. This order is in response to Eskom requesting the execution of a high court decision that allowed the recovery of incorrectly deducted government equity support for the financial year 2021/’22. Since Eskom made this urgent application to the high court, Nersa had made additional decisions related to recovery of efficient costs from previous years. The high court order allows a further 5.44c/kWh increase,” Eskom says in a statement.

Bin patrol kicks off in ward 107 KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels

A

clean-up initiative to beautify areas in ward 107 is currently underway - a necessary move after concerns around informal waste pickers had been raised. The ward, which includes Parklands, Sunningdale, Blouberg Rise and parts of Table View, kicked off its bin patrols recently, starting at the green belt opposite the Engen in Sandown Road. This as cultivating community pride has always been a priority in the ward, together with tackling litter in the areas. According to ward councillor, Nicky Rheeder there has been concern about the informal waste pickers who bring all their collections on bin day to the green belt opposite the Engen in Sandown Road. “They then sort through everything there and leave behind whatever they do not wish to keep. The residents have been unhappy about this as the entire green belt ends up full of litter, the storm water canal also ends up full of waste and the area then looks unsightly for the remainder of the week until the City’s cleansing department can come

A walkway recently cleared in ward 107. and clean. This is a vicious cycle,” Rheeder says. Wendy Robertson from Community Clean Up and the community policing forum (CPF) got together and decided to start doing patrols on a Wednesday morning in order to deter loitering and the sorting of the bin contents on the green spaces.

“She puts the message out to fellow NHW and CPF members and whoever is available then joins us. We don’t do anything other than to be present in the green space. I have committed to doing this every Wednesday in February, of which this week is my last. Unfortunately I’m unable to commit to every week, but the CPF and Community Clean Up team seems keen to continue, even if it is on an ad hoc basis,” Rheeder explains. Rheeder adds that on the first Wednesday, approximately 30 to 40 people were moving through this space in large groups with trolleys packed full to the brim. “The second week no one settled on the grass to sort and the informal waste pickers continued to move through the area without leaving any mess behind. Last week we saw very few informal waste pickers in comparison. Visibility and owning the green spaces is what it is all about. There need not be any engagement. This specific greenbelt is a shortcut, connecting the residents of Sunningdale with the West Coast Village Mall. Several people have reported being harassed by the informal waste pickers on their way through this area, but since our patrols have started, people can now walk through there

safely without feeling intimidated,” she says. Rheeder says she approached a group of informal waste pickers with law enforcement explaining the purpose of their presence. “They seemed to understand and said they would try from their side not to mess when going about their waste picking. Whether they will honour their word remains to be seen. We also explained to them that they cannot use the shop trolleys. Essentially it is theft. In the end this is not about not wanting people roaming the streets. It is about keeping the area litter free. If the informal waste pickers went about their day without messing as they go, no one would have a problem. Of course the illegal trading is another problem that develops once they have retrieved what they are able to sell. We have an informal trading plan in this ward, which means that trading is only allowed with a permit and only on promulgated trading spaces,” she says. Rheeder is encouraging residents to join their local NHW’s, the Community Clean Up team and get stuck into owning the public spaces again.

Call for schools to assist learning campaign Primary schools around the world are being invited to join a ground-breaking health educational campaign. Fast Heroes, supported and endorsed by the World Stroke Organisation, is being rolled out globally with a mission to recruit a million children to help save their grandparents. The award-winning Fast Heroes campaign seeks to use children between the ages of five and nine years as the catalyst to help improve recognition of the signs of a stroke, as well as the need for speedy action. Leveraging their amazing enthusiasm for learning and sharing, children are encouraged to spread knowledge to the rest of their family, particularly their grandparents. The educational resources are fun, engaging, and interactive, teaching children about empathy and love, as well as providing practical life-saving skills. Sheila Martins, neurology professor and president-elect of the World Stroke Organization, says, “One in four of us will have a stroke in our lifetime, and worldwide, it is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability. However, it is treatable. People who have a stroke need access to high-quality acute care as quickly as possible, so increasing awareness of the key symptoms is vital. Children can help make a real difference by sparking interest among their wider family. The overarching aim is to help ensure that when stroke strikes, grandparents can survive with their lives intact thanks to effective and fast treatment.” Jan van der Merwe, who heads up the Fast Heroes campaign, says, “Schools can get involved at the level that’s right for them – from implementing the programme in classrooms, through to remote learning options where children and their families can participate from home. They can access free

resources, help take part in a Guinness World Records attempt, and win great prizes by competing with other schools in their region. It’s a great chance to get involved in something special for an important cause.” Van der Merwe adds that the World Health Organisation and Unesco recently launched a new initiative aimed at making every school a health-promoting school (HPS). “The initiative recognises that promoting health education from early childhood through the school setting would benefit not only the children themselves but also their families, peers and their wider communities. “Let’s help make every school a health- promoting school because together we can save the world – one child and one grandparent at a time.” The learning modules centre around four animated characters, a group of retired superhero grandparents and their grandson Timmy. They teach children about the three key signs of stroke – a face that suddenly droops to one side, one arm that suddenly goes weak, or two lips that suddenly cannot form speech – as well as the importance of immediately calling an ambulance. To help role model the desired behaviour, an animated film shows Timmy being a Fast Hero by calling 112 when his grandpa Franc has a stroke. Research has shown that people often do not recognise the key signs of a stroke and do not seek emergency medical care straight away. A recent study, published in the BMC Emergency Medicine journal, showed that only 23% of stroke patients correctly realised they were having a stroke, and just 11% called for an ambulance. Mayor visits Dunoon Library T

he executive mayor Dan Plato and Mayco member for community services and health Zahid Badroodien, began a series of library visits to highlight the services available to the public at these facilities. The first stop was in Dunoon last week. According to the City of Cape Town, nearly two years after its official opening, the City’s R40 million Dunoon Library remains a hub of information and learning to enrich the young and not-soyoung. One of the main services at libraries is SmartCape, a free internet service for library patrons that provides an invaluable resource for the scores of residents who make use of the service daily. “Covid-19 has made it necessary to rethink the way many things are done, and the City of Cape Town

TM

has kept 100 libraries available to the public in a safe and responsible manner. There is immense value for all at libraries and with internet and digital connectivity, libraries are bridging the gap between past and future. “At Dunoon Library there is an almost endless source of learning materials with 15 000 library items. This world-class three-storey library has turned the page to become a beacon of light and knowledge in the area and having such a facility is one of many examples demonstrating our commitment to providing quality infrastructure and services in communities that need them most. This award-winning building has been recognised internationally, but the true value lies in the knowledge, education and learning opportunities which are made possible within these walls,” Plato said.

The Dunoon Library facility is a partnership between local, provincial and national spheres of government and is energy and water efficient as it makes use of LED motion-sensor lights and grey water. A team of City professionals designed the Dunoon sports complex and library. “Dunoon Library is more than just a space for books and entertainment, but has become a centre for learning and a part of the community by engaging residents on matters of importance and providing assistance. The number of books that were scanned in the last six months at Table View totalled 16 404. Given that libraries offer limited services, the numbers show how popular the Table View library is and how it has become a community asset during the 30 years it has been open,” added Badroodien.

NSRI assists in evacuation operation T

he National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) assisted a 52-year-old man seeking medical attention from a container vessel that was approaching Table Bay over the weekend. This after receiving communication from marine radio traffic at 10:54 on Saturday 20 February. Davide del Fante, NSRI Table Bay deputy station commander said, “While at sea conducting routine training exercises aboard our sea rescue craft Spirit of Vodacom, we intercepted VHF marine radio traffic from a container vessel that was approaching Table Bay at the time, from last port of call in Durban. “While preparing to put to anchor the ships crew requested medical assistance for a 52-year-old male from Poland, suffering

a medical condition. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, a Western Cape government health EMS duty doctor, Telkom Maritime Radio Services and Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) initiated investigations to determine the medical condition and severity of the patient. NSRI Airborne Sea Rescue and the EMS doctor were placed on alert to prepare for a helicopter patient evacuation operation while our sea rescue craft berthed at Granger Bay to pick up an NSRI duty doctor.” The NSRI duty doctor and an NSRI rescue swimmer were transferred onto the vessel where they found the patient to be in a stable condition. Netcare 911 ambulance services were activated and the vessel was granted priority passage to dock in the Port of Table

Bay. A TNPA pilot vessel and TNPA tug boat assisted to bring the vessel to her berth in the Port of Table Bay and once safely berthed the patient was taken into the care of Netcare 911 paramedics and he was transported to hospital in a stable condition by a Netcare 911 ambulance. “NSRI emergency operations centre, NSRI Table Bay duty controllers, Netcare 911 ambulance services duty controllers, TNPA, Port Health Authorities, Telkom Maritime Radio Services, the ships agent and government health EMS assisted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre with logistics and coordination of the patient evacuation operation. The operation was completed at 13:57,” Del Fante said.

Permits required for wine farm routes A

s from Monday 1 March all walkers and runners will require permits to access the routes on Zevenwacht wine es-

tate. Permits valid for the calendar year can be bought at the tasting room. The cost is R350 for adults, or R250 for patron card holders, pensioners, scholars, and students 21 or younger. No permits are required for children under 12. Daily access will be available by special permission for out of town visitors at a fee of R50 for adults and R25 for children. Payment will go towards the maintenance of the routes, maps and armbands. A map and armband will be provided. The armband must be worn and visible while walking or running on the estate. The two routes available are the tar road from the boom, around the dam via the main car park and out again (2.7km); and the 5.3km jeep track route around the top of the farm. Walkers and runners must stick to these routes (as on the map). When using the road walkers and runners are required to give way to vehicles. Some space has been cleared along the forest side of the road – stay on this side of the road in both directions. Do not walk along the white wall for your own safety. Dogs will only be allowed on the tar road and must be on a leash. Pick up after your dog and dispose of it off the farm. The Bottelary Conservancy will be introducing, managing, and maintaining all the hiking trails in the conservancy area, including the hiking trail on Zevenwacht. This will give hikers and runners access to a larger and more varied trail on Zevenwacht and neighbouring farms. A Bottelary trails hiking permit will be required. This will only be operational from May.

Health workers honoured As a token of appreciation and motivation during the Covid-19 pandemic, N1 City Mall, Pick n Pay and Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages have teamed up to donate 470 healthcare packages to local health workers at four hospitals in their vicinity. Mazel Matthews, centre manager at N1 City Mall, said one doesn’t acknowledge the long hours, hard work and mental capacity frontline heroes have endured since the

start of the pandemic. “We would really like to thank these healthcare heroes for taking care of our community right now and show them we are here to take care of them, too.” The 470 packages were distributed to the Old Mutual Isolation and Quarantine Facility, Elsies River Community Health Centre, Mediclinic Panorama, inlcuding Netcare N1 City.

Permits will be required from next week to run on Zevenwacht wine estate. PHOTO: CARINA ROUX V Visit www.zevenwacht.co.za for updates or contact info@zevenwacht.co.za with any queries.

THINKING OUT LOUD

HOOFARTIKELBLAD

Woensdag, 24 Februarie 2021

LEWENSKIEKIE

Teach kids to respect all women I recently had a conversation with my housemate’s 14-year-old niece while watching Oscar Pistorius: The Blade Runner Killer. It’s an unofficial biopic based on public records about model, Reeva Steenkamp and former Olympic champ, Oscar Pistorius’ relationship which had a tragic ending back in 2003. From the minute this movie started, the young one seated next to me made it known that the female lead character would ignore all the red flags and stay in an abusive relationship to remain relevant to the public. Of course this young girl did not know anything about the love story of Reeva and Oscar, thus her observations were purely uninfluenced. As the movie progressed to its climax (poorly so, might I add) I noted my partner’s disapproval of the female lead’s disregard of the abusive treatment she received from her lover, much to her annoyance. “It will end in tears,” she says. “Women put themselves through hell for this love thing,” she adds. Delving further towards the climax, the little girl tells me that she kind of feels sorry for Reeva because she was so in love with this “imperfectlyperfect” man (yep, her words), that she died for him. “If this is what love is, then I would rather die alone.” This made me think a bit, what will it take for us to teach girls that their lives matter and no man has the right to raise their hand or voice at them? Where does that leave the boy child? When do we start teaching them that raising a hand to women is wrong? The answer to the questions above, I guess, starts with showing programmes that address these issues. If movies or even TV programmes such as The Blade Runner Killer gets televised more, then maybe children will learn from an early age that gender-based violence is a serious issue and should not be tolerated. Kids are easy to influence and this would be a perfect way to detest GBV and start to learn ways to become admirable men. These programmes would also be perfect in teaching life and leadership skills which would be able to carry them through life. This is important as it builds character and makes it easier to take the right decisions. Of course, age restrictions should apply when broadcasting these programmes in order to not leave the young viewers traumatised, but this should be done in such a way that the message is clear to understand. We are often told that one has to be harsh to be kind and this is one of those times this phrase is relevant. If this is done right, then young people will have a brighter future paved for them. I tell you now, this has the power to put an end to the ongoing abuse and killing of women we have come to live with in recent years. It is up to us to start the process to changing how men treat women every day in this country. Maybe young girls will learn that having a male figure next to you, no matter how rich, is not more important than their lives. Maybe boys will begin to frown upon such acts and grow to become men of honour and integrity. – Itumeleng Mokwa

GBV on the rise in SA I often wonder, how is femicide still an issue in today’s day and age? What is it about the concept of women’s equality and power, that is so difficult to accept? Why are women still getting raped and murdered every three hours in South Africa for being the “weaker sex”, the “submissive gender” or the “lesser partner” in relationships? I would love to love my country, but South Africa does not love me. South Africa is rated among the most violent countries on Earth, and from 2019-2020 saw a 1.4% increase in murders according to the latest annual police report. And women are the target – I am five times more likely to be raped or murdered than any other woman around the world. Maybe the poor standard of education in South Africa is to blame. For our society has no understanding of basic self-governance; life is unfair, and no, you actually can’t just take and do whatever you want (especially if it involves another individual’s life). Yes, culture and religion come into play, but in our “free” country women should have the authority to break away from those who cause them fatal harm. This should be possible – why is it not? Not only is our education, or lack thereof, to blame, but also our policing and justice system. If there are no consequences for crime, nor any immediate reactions, why would crime stop? Our president, Mr Ramaphosa, has called the genderbased violence in our country a pandemic. It certainly is a pandemic – so then why aren’t we doing anything

about it? There is all this talk, and then some more, but from what I have seen the government is taking no decisive action towards ending these hateful and evil occurrences. South African women are tired of waiting for help that isn’t coming. The only way forward that I can see, is self-protection. Who else is there to rely on besides ourselves? Furthermore, I can’t describe the immense relief I feel in knowing there are organisations in South Africa that are finally taking a stand alongside us. Now is the time to start realising that self-defence is the only true way to save ourselves. ASHLEY DAVISON Durbanville

As ’n

PIERRE JORDAAN E-pos

Oupa bekommerd oor leerders As oupa is kinders en kleinkinders vir my ’n baie belangrike deel van my lewe. OUPA GROMPIE Durbanville

First-ever world report on hearing launched soon T

he countdown has begun to the launch of the first-ever world report on hearing. The launch takes place on World Hearing Day celebrated on 3 March this year. Through the global launch of this report, the World Health Organisation intends to raise awareness with, and mobilize action among national governments, international non-government organisations and development agencies, as well as all stakeholders in the field of hearing care. “This is a momentous occasion, one which will serve to raise awareness about this invisible and far-reaching epidemic – that of hearing loss. “The estimated global burden of unaddressed hearing loss is a staggering $750 billion per year, not to mention the negative impact on the individual such as isolation

and lack of access to communication, education and information. “This is totally unacceptable when so much can be done to prevent and treat hearing loss. This is a clarion call to the South African government to ensure hearing health for all – screen, rehabilitate and communicate,” says Dr Diane Bell, chair of the Carel du Toit Trust, a member of the World Hearing Forum. World Hearing Day is celebrated annually on 3 March to highlight the importance of hearing and draw attention to the importance of early identification and intervention for hearing loss. The theme this year is “hearing care for all”. We all run the risk of not knowing that we have unidentified hearing loss, failing to realize that we are missing out on certain sounds and words. Ensuring that your baby’s hearing is tested soon after birth is the first step to the best possible outcome. At the Carel du Toit Centre based on the grounds of Tygerberg Hospital, children who are born with hearing loss, even profoundly deaf, can learn to listen, and develop natural spoken language.

Uitvoerende burgemeester Dan Plato

Volunteers show love to frontline workers W

ith February being the month of love the Champions for Children, a volunteer club of Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust, decided to give back to healthcare workers through their “showsomelove” campaign. This is an initiative dreamed up by the volunteers as they want to show support and appreciation to the healthcare workers. They want to make the staff feel loved, a spokesperson says. Nurses and doctors at Tygerberg Hospital have been working tirelessly throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Many of their colleagues, friends and family have succumbed to the pandemic. “This campaign is about highlighting and

raising awareness about the trying times of the frontline workers and the hard conditions they have been working under over the last year. “We are appealing to the public and businesses to show support by pledging a cash donation as an act of love to contribute towards the purchase of flowers for the healthcare workers,” the spokesperson says. The flowers will be handed over by the Champions for Children in the last week of February to all the paediatric wards. The flowers are a token from the volunteers, to show support. Locals support winefarms ESMÉ ERASMUS

I

f it were not for local support, many restaurants and venues on local winefarms in the Durbanville wine valley might not have survived the Covid-19 pandemic. According to Bernard Veller, owner of Nitida, his winefarm was blessed with such local support that he experienced definite changes in people’s buying and visiting patterns. Between 20 and 30 percent more local people are estimated to visit the farm now. This seems to be the trend at other winefarms in the valley as well. “Over the last year we lost nearly 20 weeks of trading – in both the cellar with wine sales, as well as in the restaurants. This has had a devastating effect on the businesses. “The massive support subsequent to the reopening – in particular from locals – has helped us to overcome these difficulties. “We have managed to keep all our staff employed and have also managed to pay all salaries in a very difficult period,” he says. “We are seeing support from people spending an extended period with us to others coming for sales only. “The visitors who are most exciting for us are those that come and taste wine, but then also have lunch or dinner in one of the restaurants. “We are very excited about this local support. Nitida and its ancillary businesses have focused strongly on people visiting us and this supports our underlying strategy,” Veller says. He says the reason for this upheaval in local support could be that once the severe lockdown was lifted (since last August and now recently again), people wanted to get out, but wanted to feel safe too.

“The uncertainty that still existed made them look to local opportunities and in particular venues that offered outdoor activities,” he says. “Clearly wine farms and the restaurants on these farms addressed these needs and concerns. We have put substantial effort into Covid-19 protocols to ensure patrons’ safety. Locals have picked up on this and see it as an important aspect in their support for us,” Veller says. “This in turn introduced a new set of customers to our wine brand and our restaurants. “Covid-19 has also sensitised people to the stress of local businesses and there has been an active shift in buying patterns to support local industry. “If this is then also coupled with a good experience the support becomes entrenched and will hopefully endure after the pandemic has passed,” he says. “During these difficult times, people have also not necessarily been able to find their go-to everyday wine and have experienced better quality wines. Going forward they have then continued drinking these wines.” According to Veller, people from the southern suburbs are also visiting Durbanville more frequently now – “possibly because we are closer and they feel more secure”, he says. “The media has been a great help at talking about supporting local companies and this support is much appreciated and has been effective,” Veller says.

“We believe that lockdown has forced people to slow down and appreciate the good things around them, including family, home cooking and local wineries and restaurants,” he says. It is not only the restaurants and other venues on wine farms that have thrived. “With the stay at home behaviour of many people the ordering of wine on the net has grown substantially. In particular from people in the area,” he says. “We are much more active in promoting picnics (where social distancing is real) and platters for people to enjoy in our gardens,” he says. “We are becoming much more flexible with regard to patrons’ needs and special requests,” he says. There has also been a new trend in business events. “We are encouraging corporates to hold their necessary meetings with us, where the team involved is only exposed to the interaction and the threat of large buildings with many people is minimised. “We have started catering to businesses who want to be more isolated in their own environment or meetings that are being held via Zoom. “We are strongly focused as outdoor venues; we are easily accessible and can be visited at shorter notice. “Our attitude towards pets (which we allow under most circumstances) has made us a destination for people wanting to get

their animals out of the house. “We definitely are seeing more families visiting and our child-friendly attitude in the cellar and restaurants is well received. Our outdoor areas are enjoyed by these families,” he says. Bennie Howard, marketing manager at Meerendal wine estate, agrees. According to him, they have far more local families visiting for lunch – especially during the week in the extended school holiday. “This is definitely a new trend. With more people working from home, there are not the strict borders between work and home as before lockdown,” he says. Dirk Steyn, managing director of the award-winning restaurant The Tangram at Durbanville Hills, says the change in visiting patterns was dramatic. “We could not believe how local people supported us – people from Durbanville. “If it were not for them, I would not have been here today,” he says. At The Tangram they attracted locals with good specials on the menu, aimed at the local market. “Everybody was aware of the effect the closure of restaurants might have had on us, but when we opened our doors again, people came to support us – also a small percentage from areas such as Hout Bay and Camps Bay. We respect the Covid-19 regulations; people see it and feel safe,” he says. The fact that one can still buy wine over weekends despite the liquor restrictions, contributes to more visitors over weekends, he says. “People want to come out over a weekend, enjoy food and wine and spend a good time with friends. It is fun and it is safe,” he says.

NEWS

Attacks on City health staff, shop owners continue It’s been alleged that criminals are taking advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic as the City of Cape Town’s healthcare workers are often attacked while serving communities. According to the Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien, shop owners have also fallen victim. “In recent weeks, City health staff have been robbed at gun point and others threatened with death amid the continued theft and vandalising of equipment at facilities. Our staff are on the front line of this pandemic and it is unacceptable that they face additional threats from the very communities they serve. “Staff are doing what they can to monitor compliance with health protocols for everyone’s safety, but if they are not allowed to do this, we are heading for disaster in terms of infection figures,” said Badroodien. In addition, he said that unscrupulous scam artists continue to prey on shop owners who are told that if they do not make use of a specific sanitising service, the service

providers will close down their business and they will not be able to operate. “These fake companies provide a document, which indicates that the premises have been disinfected/cleaned and give the store owner a compliance certificate valid for a month from the date of treatment. In some instances, they also insist that the shop owners purchase a special bleach from them, which should then be used for future disinfection purposes. “City health wants to warn shop owners that it is not mandatory to use any sterilisation service. Surfaces can easily be disinfected with a solution of diluted household bleach. Regulations under the Disaster Risk Management Act do not make provision for premises to be closed down due to any perceived lack of sterilisation,” said Badroodien. Shop owners who have been scammed into paying for this service at threat of closure are encouraged to lay a complaint at their local police station.

M12 once again open to motorists: The City of Cape Town recently completed the rehabilitation of Giel Basson Drive with an investment of R38 million to improve the key section between the N1 off-ramp and Voortrekker Road. The road is now open for residents to enjoy. “I am impressed with the standard of work delivered by the team and am sure residents will be happy with the improvements. Giel Basson Drive is one of the main access routes in the Parow and Goodwood areas, and links various residential suburbs with the nearby commercial nodes,” says Felicity Purchase, Mayco member for transport.

Guard attacked in Plattekloof RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj An armed response officer who reacted to a break-in in progress at a house in Swarthout Crescent in Plattekloof last week, was attacked and allegedly robbed of his firearm while executing his duties. It was been reported that on Monday 15 February the officer from ADT was patrolling the area when he noticed suspicious men trying to gain entry into a premises. He attempted to stop them, but was severely beaten and apparently robbed of his firearm, cellphone and keys. Several other security companies, including District Watch, as well as the police’s flying squad and local neighbourhood watch organisation were at the scene on the day. The officer was treated in hospital for his injuries, but he was not admitted.

Wahl Bartmann, group chief executive of the Fidelity Services Group, confirmed the attack on armed response officer Mofikeng Nkange. Nkange was injured when he was reportedly assaulted by a group of suspects outside a residential property, Bartmann says. “I want to express my sincere appreciation to residents in the vicinity who responded and raised the alarm when they realised what was happening, and came to our officer’s aid. “He was treated in hospital for his injuries and we wish him a speedy recovery,” says Bartmann. The exact circumstances of the incident are being investigated by the police. Bartmann says they are providing the police their full cooperation. TygerBurger is still awaiting comment from the Parow police regarding the attack on the armed response officer.

Rugby clubs back for training F

ollowing SA Rugby’s announcement for the resumption of amateur rugby activities, Western Province Rugby are excited to welcome their clubs back to training. “After last week’s announcement by SA Rugby that amateur rugby training may resume we have seen a breath of fresh air blow amongst our members. “The initial phase allows for a four-week period for strength and conditioning training, all according to strict Covid health and safety protocols,” says Danny Jones, manager of WP Amateur Rugby. SA Rugby also confirmed the restart of the amateur rugby season will follow a structured approach to ensure the health and safety of players and management are taken into consideration. According to statement released by SA Rugby last week, the second phase will incorporate four weeks of gradual integration of contact training, should the national government give the go-ahead. SA Rugby CEO, Jurie Roux said this is an important step in getting the local amateur season off to a good start, but he emphasised the need for responsible behaviour from these rugby communities. “SA Rugby is the custodian of rugby in the country but school sport falls under the auspices of the Department of Basic Education and they must therefore adhere to government’s rules and regulations,” said Roux. “Schools have got their own Covid management committees, and together with the school headmaster they will provide the final say on whether the school participates in rugby or not. “The ultimate responsible person will be the principal of each school. It remains our collective responsibility to ensure that the

Rugby grounds may become a hive of activity once again following the announcement by SA Rugby that gives amateur rugby the go-ahead to return to training. PHOTO: EARL HAUPT players and coaches who participate in the game of rugby do so in a safe environment and mitigates against the risk of unnecessary illness and injury.” Jones says the announcement has seen a number of their Covid certified clubs return to training and judging by early feedback, the players are adjusting well. “This was of course expected as we know many of our clubs have remained active with their members doing social activities which also includes Covid protocols,” he says. The knock-on effect of SA Rugby’s announcement has seen the Varsity Cup being given the go-ahead for this season, with four local universities representing the Cape region, namley: Maties, UWC, and UCT and CPUT in the Varsity Shield.

“This year will see the continuation of our focus on the development of women’s rugby and the continuation of our exclusive women’s rugby coaching program which launched last year. As we see more clubs building their structures and looking to include women’s rugby at their clubs we anticipate that this programme will have a meaningful connection between the women we are enrolling on the course and the clubs with women’s rugby structures. As part of our strategy to grow women’s rugby, we will be engaging and supporting our club structures to follow suit,” says Jones. This week also saw the roll out the first of their forum meetings which saw clubs engage WP Rugby. These sessions looked at club competitions for 2021, proposals for

2022 and return to training. This week rotated through Super League A, B and C at Newlands stadium boardroom and next week sees them engage the City and Southern Leagues, Northern and Paarl Leagues and Metro, Simonsberg and Sunday Leagues later this week. “In addition to our coaching course, we will continue to empower our clubs by rolling out additional media, marketing and sponsorship workshops. Last year saw the start of the focus MMS courses which allowed for additional marketeers to be deployed at club level. We will now roll out additional courses which focus on the specifics of marketing your club and engaging your supporter’s club,” Jones explains. Jones says the sessions will add a practical element and will help clubs improve their communication and exposure. Anyone who missed any of the previous modules can join the four-week catch-up course over a four consecutive day period starting on 1 March. “On a final note, we remind all our members that we understand the negative impact Covid has had on the morale of our members and we recognise the value of the roll many of you have played during these extraordinary times. The fact that you have kept your members connected and engaged through the spirit of the rugby community is admirable and deserves recognition. We urge you to continue engaging your members and fans and to continue driving the passion of WP Club Rugby. “We extend our deepest sympathies to those that have lost someone close to them during these difficult times, you remain in our thoughts and prayers. We remind you to continue fighting the virus by washing your hands regularly, practising social distance and always wear a mask.”

New club to the crease The Independent Institute for Education’s Varsity College (VC) is proud to introduce its own cricket club which will be based at its Cape Town campus. The club, a member of the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA), will join the “ranks” of one of its other major sports clubs based on its Cape Town campus – netball. “The Varsity College Cricket Club third division’s goal is to become a club with its own strong identity and culture. A club which will embrace innovation and bravery amongst team mates and which will develop players’ natural abilities into greatness,” says newlyappointed, dedicated and seasoned coach and player Trevor Timm. Joining Timm as the club’s deputy chairperson and administrator is 23-year-old Christian Pietersen, who is also a second-year BComm student at Varsity College. Establishing the Varsity College Cricket Club was spearheaded by national sports manager of Varsity College Carole Adam, sports coordinator, Brent Davids and head of student services, Megan Landman. “With the move of our current Cape Town campus to the hub of the iconic Newlands Cricket Grounds Development mid-June this year, it made sense for us to make our new, purpose-built Cape Town campus the home of the VC Cricket Club,” says Adam.

EGIPTE: FIETSRYERS GAAN PROVINSIE VERTEENWOORDIG

Vier van WP gekies AVRIL FILLIES

M

As jy ’n fietsry-
