COMMUTERS LEFT STRANDED: TAXI ASSOCIATIONS, CITY AT LOGGERHEADS

T

he situation in Dunoon and Joe Slovo is not showing any signs of improving and the Table View Ratepayers’ Association (TVRA) says it is high time that those involved sit around the table and forge a way forward. Commuters were still stranded yesterday (Tuesday 1 October) after taxi associations in Joe Slovo and Dunoon decided to “park” their taxis following the impounding of some of their taxis by traffic officers. The taxi owners are also unhappy with the fact that they’ve been fined for illegally oper-

ating on other routes. The taxi associations in these areas say this is unfair, considering they have been trying to engage with the City of Cape Town regarding permits for the past six years. Frank Qotyiwe, general secretary for Dunoon Taxi Association (DTA), claims the City is dragging its feet. “We have done all they said we should, including coming up with a business plan so that we can get the permits but they are still stalling. We decided we will park our taxis until the City decides to talk to us and issue us with permits,” he said. Local businesses in Table View and surrounding areas also felt the brunt of the pro-

tests as employees couldn’t pitch for work because of the taxi situation. Several cars were stoned and two trucks and a MyCiTi bus station were set alight. Following this, the City suspended all MyCiTi bus services to the affected areas. Some commuters had to walk to work. In an effort to restore peace and for things to go back to normal, TVRA facilitated communication between the City and the DTA in the hope that a resolution will be found and to avert any further violence taking place. TVRA’s chair Mandy Da Matta said the taxi associations can’t be negotiating around a deal that was struck 10 years ago.

“There is a definite need for proper communication from the City’s side. About 10 years ago there was no Table Bay Mall and the West Coast Village. “People that go and work there need transport and the City didn’t plan properly and those relying on public transport are suffering,” she says, adding the taxi associations need proper route licensing, something that they have been talking to the City about for years with no luck. The taxi associations started applying and negotiating for permits since 2012. Qotyiwe claimed the City is acting in bad faith. V To page 2.
