The Oryx helicopter brings in troops of 22 Squadron to the mock war frontline during the Bredasdorp Airshow that was held on Saturday. The Oryx was one of the local aircraft from the Air Force Base Ysterp­ laat that took part in the annual show which featured among other attractions live bombing runs and cannon fire by a pair of Hawk fighter jets. Bus ‘sex pest’ tells all LEON STEENKAMP

Police are urging victims of a selfconfessed sex pest to come forward in the hope that an investigation can be launched into his activities.

TygerBurger reported about an incident on a MyCiTi bus last month where a man groped a 19year-old student (“‘Sex pest’ angers bus passenger”, 4 April).

The young woman, who was se-

verely traumatised after the incident, wrote an anonymous letter to the paper as a warning to the public.

In it she recalled asking the man seated next to her to remove his hand after he grabbed her leg.

When he touched her again, this time more forcefully, she grabbed his wrist, pushed him out of his seat, swore at him and then fled off the bus.

A day after the article was pub-

lished, TygerBurger received a written confession from the man in question.

“Dear TygerBurger I am the man the newspaper described as the ‘sex pest’. The incident that took place happened in a moment of weakness ... I was going through depression and something deeply hurt me.

I touched the young lady to relieve myself of the hurt inside ... What actually happened when I touched her

was that she remained silent and didn’t say a word only before she left she said excuse me and she then pushed me not of (sic) my seat and she swore ... I do ask you to please place this in the newspaper that I apologise to the lady that I touched, MyCiTi bus services and the newspaper readers about the incident.

Be assured this will not happen again. In actual fact when I read the article it put me in a state of depres-

sion again but I will seek needed help ... Be assured that something like this on my side will not happen again ... If I had criminal intentions I wouldn’t be sending you this email. Thank you for all your care for the MyCiTi passengers to have placed the article in TygerBurger Table View,” the email reads.

The email was accompanied by the man’s name and email address. . To page 2.

‘Sex pest’ was a teacher . From page 1.

This letter was forwarded to the victim along with a picture of her assailant.

Although she was outraged at the flimsy excuse of the man (whom she identified as her assailant) she refuses to lay a charge.

“So, every time this man feels socalled ‘depressed’ he touches women? That is a new level of sick.

“A simple apology would not change the fact that a now identified man put his hands on me without my consent that day,” she wrote in a follow up email.

She added it should not have happened in the first place and it wouldn’t have “if there was someone in the MyCiTi to watch over and ensure the comfort and safety of the passengers”.

“My initial intention was not to lay a charge. But, to raise awareness about these types of incidents that occur in the public eye and to propose that the MyCiTi staff could appoint people to be on the buses at any given time.”

Last week parents from an educare facility in Parklands approached TygerBurger claiming that a teacher at the school made a similar confession to both the principal and a male counsellor on Thursday 5 April. The 31-year-old man, who taught the class for children aged three and four, proved to be one and the same person.

“On the morning of Tuesday 10 April I spoke to him and informed him that in the light of what has happened he will need to resign as he can no longer work for us,” the principal of the school said.

She said the school contacted the local police but were told that unless any criminal act was committed on their premises or the school was the victim of such an act there is nothing they can do about it. The principal said that apart from one occasion where she saw him shout at a child (for which he was disciplined), there where no other incidents at the school.

One parent says the teacher was “very upset” on the Tuesday morning.

“He told me that he did something terrible which could mean the end of his career and that he is very sorry about everything,” said the mother who wishes to stay anonymous.

The following day the mother was told that the teacher was given a month’s notice.

“I immediately went to the principal and demanded an explanation. That is when she gave me all the information,” the mother said.

Some parents are however unhappy that the teacher was allowed to stay on in the classroom a week after his confession.

The principal explained that in line with the labour law she could not suspend the teacher immediately.

“There is a clause in our employee contract which states that should you make yourself guilty of a criminal offence it is grounds for immediate dismissal,” she said.

The teacher finally left the school on 11 April.

Last Wednesday parents of the children who were in the man’s class, were invited to a meeting held by the school explaining the situation.

Some parents were however unhappy that they weren’t notified of the meeting.

“They only invited parents from (this teacher’s) class. Twelve of the 32 children were moved to a new classroom with another teacher from the middle of February, but these children are dropped off in his class in the morning and then taken to the new classroom just after 08:00. After lunch they are moved back in with his class until the end of the day as she only works half day.

“The new teacher also takes school holidays off so they were with this teacher over the two week Easter school holidays,” said one of the parents of these 12 mothers who were not officially invited to the meeting at the school.

The principal says that this was an oversight by their administrative personnel.

“When the meeting was planned they automatically assumed that

just the parents of the normal class must be invited. No underhandedness was meant and even though eight of the mentioned 12 children attend the school half day which means they do not go to the teacher’s class in the afternoon, all parents were contacted after the meeting,” she explained.

The school principal stressed the fact that due to the teacher being male he was not allowed to be alone with the children and was always accompanied by an assistant.

She says the teacher’s selection process included an extensive interview with him and his lecturer, and checks with both the Sexual Offenders’ Registry and all his referrals.

“The parents of the children in the class were given three possible candidates and they chose him as their candidate of choice. Parents present in this group included two legal professionals,” the principal said.

She said representatives from the Child Trauma Centre will be assessing the children this week.

“The children in both classes will be undergoing these sessions and parents will be receiving feedback on this matter,” she said.

The lack of any criminal charges prevents the police from investigating.

A police source says this man displays characteristics of a sexual deviant. “He is definitely a risk for the community in which he lives. He is a menace to society. This woman he has done this to, is scarred. It might not be physical but definitely psychological,” the source said.

Table View Police urge other victims who believe they might have been the victim of this man or eyewitnesses call 021 521 3300.

There is still confusion as to where residents of Du Noon must go for medical treatment after the closure and re-opening of the local clinic.

Although local officials indicate that the situation regarding this clinic is back to normal after its closure two weeks ago, residents still queue at the Albow Gardens Clinic.

Tempers flared in the informal settlement over the last couple of weeks after the clinic’s closure following intimidation tactics by the local health committee. Made up of local residents the committee is protesting against the dismal state of the clinic.

Proper ventilation in a building where patients, many suffering from tuberculosis, are forced to queue for medical attention, was among the main problems.

With the clinic closed Du Noon residents went to the Table View and Albow Gardens clinics.

TygerBurger visited the Albow Gardens Clinic in Rugby yesterday where several Du Noon patients were still waiting to be helped.

One patient, 88-year-old wheelchair bound Nelson Joya, had to pay someone to bring him to the clinic. He waited several hours before being helped. Five other waiting patients from Du Noon were also confused about the situation.

Chairperson of the City’s Health Portfolio Committee, Cynthia Clayton, says everything is back to normal following recent public meetings in Du Noon.

“The clinic has been opened again and we have also made available a warehouse that will treat patients with TB and HIV/Aids. Mother and child medical services are still offered at Table View Clinic,” she explained.

Clayton said there was no need for Du Noon residents to travel to Albow Gardens.

‘City must review taxi rank’ In the latest effort to remove an unwanted minibus taxi rank in Sunningdale, the Blaauwberg Subcouncil has asked the city for an assessment on the current situation.

During the subcouncil meeting for April held last week, Councillor Heather Brenner put forward a notice of motion asking the city’s executive director of transport to investigate the illegal congregation of taxis in Sandown Road.

After the informal taxi rank in Blaauwberg Road on the verge of the Bayside Shopping Mall was closed some three years ago, taxi operators were told to load and off-load passengers at the Potsdam rank.

This temporary rank has however been rejected by taxi drivers and instead has seen them stacking illegally at several points in Parklands and Table View.

“In particular the informal stacking rank in Sandown Road has proved particularly problematic where no control and management was exercised and city officials’ atti-

tude has been to turn a blind eye in the hope that when the full phase 1A of the Integrated Rapid Transit (IRT) service is operational, the taxis will gradually disappear as their permits expire,” Brenner said in her motivation.

Residents and motorists in Parklands have been badly compromised by this as it has led to illegal informal trading, littering, noise, urinating and defecating on the verge. This has not only fouled the adjacent living environment but also caused the left lane and cycleway to be blocked for traffic as the taxis compete for stacking and drop-off space.

The problem has recently escalated to both sides of Sandown Road.

“While appreciating the difficulties in making the taxis stack elsewhere, I have continuously exhorted the transport depart-

ment from the top to exercise some management at Sandown Road but to no avail and with no response from officials to my approaches,” Brenner said.

Brenner proposed that the assessment by the transport department specifically looks at issues such as; . The number of taxis using the area for stacking and loading passengers; . The eradication of informal trading conducted in the area; . Daily litter cleansing; . Daily sanitary cleansing; . Daily supervision of the site; . Regular attention to verge vegetation, and . Noise control.

Brenner asked that a full report is presented to the subcouncil at its next meeting in May.

Oranje sê jy kan tegnies nog gered word. Met ’n oranje sticker het jy ’n lisensie om binne tien minute gehelp te word.

Van geel af begin die belangstelling in jou mediese ongemak taan. Met ’n geel toestand van ongesteldheid, kan jy tot ’n uur wag, sê die plakkaat. Wat sal dit nou insluit? ’n Gebreekte been wat deur die vel steek, maar darem nie ook ’n aar afgesteek het nie? Hartkrampe, maar darem nie ’n fullblown hartaanval nie? Die vrou is in kraam, maar die baba sal darem nie binne, wel, ’n uur te voorskyn kom nie? Die mes sit nog in die wond vas, so die man sal darem nie doodbloei nie?

Links van my het ’n vrou gesit wat baie gesond lyk, maar soveel pyn in haar rug gehad het dat sy nie kon beweeg nie. ’n Vriend het haar daar kom sitmaak, en nou is sy op haar eie – vir by die vier uur lank. Regs van my het ’n ander vrou maar kwaai bleek en beroerd gelyk en al dieper in die regop stoel ingesak. Ook op die groen vlak. Haar vriendin wou die tyd met koffie verkort. Die masjien was stukkend. Die watervlak van die filtreerder sou ons nie tot sesuur deursien nie.

Hulle was seker bang my kind gooi in die wagkamer op, want nadat ek haar hele geskiedenis, wat op twee jaar gelukkig nog besonder kort is, moes gee, kry sy darem iets om die koors te breek.

Ons wagtendes was eenvoudig nie siek genoeg om binne vier ure aandag te kry nie.

“Jy kom mors eintlik ons tyd,” sê die sticker.

“Jy het ’n groen plakker, groen vir “Go home!”

‘Forged docs for lease’ LEON STEENKAMP

The forgery of bank documents to secure rental housing contracts beyond the financial means of the perpetrators has become a growing tendency in the Table View area.

The Table View Police’s fraud unit is currently investigating two such cases.

“They get the bank letterhead and then fabricate a balance sheet with a false account number. The documents are filled in with figures that qualify them for the renting of large properties,” explained police spokesperson Lieutenant Elizabeth Munro.

The two cases under investigation involve houses in West Beach with a monthly rental of between R5 000 and R10 000.

Munro says the fraudsters also forge their salary slips and appear above board when doing ITC credit checks.

“They move into the properties, pay a deposit and rent for the first two months and then they stop,” Munro explained.

One man was arrested on charges of forgery and fraud in connection with this prac-

tice two weeks ago.

According to investigating officer, Detective Constable Desmond November, several similar cases are under investigation.

Once these individuals occupy a property they cannot be evicted without following a lengthy legal process.

“According to the Prevention of Illegal Eviction From and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act (PIE) an unlawful occupier can only be evicted by the Sheriff of the Court once an eviction notice has been obtained from the court,” says Munro.

She says any action by a disgruntled property owner such as cutting off the electricity or running water to force the unlawful tenants out, is considered an act of eviction in terms of the law and would put the property owner in the wrong.

“A desperate property owner in Parklands had new tenants move in on top of the illegal tenants occupying his property. Subsequently a charge of illegal eviction was laid against the new tenants,” Munro said.

“It’s as simple as phoning the bank as the bank account usually does not exist,” Munro advised.

City residents can now phone a new toll- free number to report any incidents regarding street children and street people.

This number – 0800 872 201 – according to Cornelia Finch, district head of the City of Cape Town’s social development sector, was rolled out as part of the Give Responsibly campaign.

This campaign, launched last month, aims to discourage members of the community from giving irresponsibly.

“Handouts given directly to street people sustain a deeply damaging lifestyle on the streets. With our programmes we aim to get

them off the streets, by a holistic approach,” she says.

“If you really want to help, phone the tollfree numbers to find out how and where you can help.

“You can also report street people to this call centre, from where action will be taken, either by means of a social worker or organisation,” she says.

The call centre can also advise you or direct you to the nearest organisation.

According to Finch the call centre will be manned by four dedicated staff members, and she advises the public to phone the call centre, instead of the police or ward councillor, in cases involving street people.

Up and down the mountain 11 times ANDRÉ BAKKES

Some might consider it fun to run and climb up Table Mountain several times a day, but this wasn’t the only reason 100 athletes participated in the K-Way Platteklip Charity Challenge (KPCC) on Saturday.

André Calitz scaled Table Mountain 11 times on Saturday – all in the name of Joe Slovo Park’s Sinenjongo High School.

The fourth KPCC was, in fact, more about raising R500 000 for Joe Slovo Park’s Sinenjongo High School.

Through several sponsors the target was met and finally exceeded by R20 000.

Competitors climbed to the top of the mountain via Platteklip Gorge, descended via Table Mountain Cableway and raced to the start to begin another excruciating and “satisfying” lap. They needed to complete the 5,5km loop as many times as possible between 07:00 and 18:00.

The winner, André Calitz, broke two records in his repetitive forays up and down the mountain.

It took him 34 minutes to race from the lower cable station to Platteklip Gorge and then, perhaps more noteworthy, he reached the summit 11 times in 11 hours!

When TygerBurger contacted him on Monday he said he felt “alright”, but he did allude to a lingering feeling of stiffness.

“But it wasn’t about me or the other competitors, but rather about giving something back. It is nice to race for a noble cause!” he emphasised.

Calitz said that the organising of the race was the best he’s ever seen.

The start of the challenge couldn’t come quickly enough for some, while others decided it might be best to conserve their energy.

Photos: Trevor Wilkins “It was amazing! To get all that water up the mountain and get preferential treatment over the tourists when it came to coming down in the cable car takes some doing. There was also food like muffins and sandwiches which kept us going.

So much could have gone wrong, but nothing ever did,” adds Calitz.

Table Mountain Cableway provided all participants and race officials with free access to the cableway and there was “minimal disruption” to their normal operations.

One of the organisers, Anton de Waal,

said he was very happy with how the event turned out.

“There were a lot of other events in which the participants could compete, but they chose this one because it’s a charity drive,” he elaborated, before adding that every single person who helped that day were all volunteers.

The 130 participants managed to get companies and individuals to sponsor them per lap, and all the money raised was handed over to the NPO, Marconi Beam Trust, which will in turn use it to help Sinenjongo High School.

SA legend talks on malaria Kingsley Holgate, probably Africa’s best known modern-day explorer and humanitarian, will be raising awareness for a disease which claims 655 000 lives a year – malaria.

Holgate will be delivering a talk at Cape Union Mart Adventure Centre at Canal Walk tomorrow, a day after World Malaria Day. By using adventure to improve lives, the legendary Kingsley’s Great African Rift Valley Expedition penetrates remote regions from Djibouti to Mozambique with a focus on malaria prevention.

On 26 April at 18:30 he will address the audience, who can enter free of charge.

Snacks and discounted shopping will fol-

low.

The organisation United Against Malaria introduced supporters’ bracelets to raise awareness and curb the spread of malaria.

These bracelets have proven to be an effective fundraising tool to purchase lifesaving mosquito nets in poverty-stricken sub-Saharan Africa.

While beating malaria, the bracelets are also beating poverty with a percentage of funds used to develop skills, create employment and generate income for the Relate beaders from South African townships. Relate developed the signature UAM supporters’ bracelet (available for R30).

Help those who help you Those who save lives for a living are appealing to the public to help them compete at the International World Rescue Challenge in London this year.

Helping the Western Province rescue medic team compete on the world stage has never been easier, since all one really needs to do is to have a great time!

This weekend (27 and 28 April), a big fundraising event will be held at the Northern Cricket Grounds in Goodwood.

There will be market stalls, a potjiekos competition, quad bike rides, pony rides and a bikini car wash!

Bands will also entertain the crowd and Derek Gordon will be doing a show on Friday.

Among all the draw cards, the Rescue Rhinos team and Resqmedics Ambulance Service will also demonstrate extrication and

lifesaving skills.

The list of things to do at this event is almost infinite!

Fascinating car exhibits by Jags Club, Exotic Cars, Crankhandle Club, Vintage Cars and Street Rods will certainly be a feast for the eyes.

On Friday one can even enter the six-a-side cricket playoff tournament at R30 per player and on Saturday raffle tickets will be sold for some stunning prizes up for grab.

Since the event will stretch over two days, one can just pitch a tent and sleep over!

On the Friday night one will be able to light candles in memory of EMS comrades and all emergency workers who have passed away.

Saturday night will culminate in a disco.

Volgens Juleen sien die honde net so baie uit na hierdie besoekies.

“Wanneer ons in Koebergweg ry, begin hulle al te hyg! Hulle blaf selfs vir karre wat voor ons inry!” lag Juleen. Sy het al in 1977 besluit dat sy eendag honde wil gebruik vir tera- Heidi Dhuymsma en Tuppence.

Maak beursie oop vir ander Die afgelope maand het TygerBurger berig oor heelwat liefdadigheids- en nie-regeringsorganisasies wat noustrop trek. Badisa moes noodgewonge van sy projekte kanselleer (waaronder die No Limits-program vir straatkinders) en die Suid-Afrikaanse Jeugkoor staar sluiting in die gesig.

Die aankondiging is ook pas gemaak dat die Varingfees, wat die afgelope agt jaar in Brackenfell aangebied is, nie vanjaar gaan plaasvind nie weens ’n gebrek aan geld.

Die sogenaamde “groot” maatskappye, wat in die verlede verdienstelike projekte en organisasies ondersteun het, het doodeenvoudig nie meer geld om mee te “speel” nie.

Die ekonomie knyp en dit word orals gevoel. En soos die geld minder raak, so raak die nood al groter.

Wat kan die middelklas-mens-op-straat doen om die nood te help verlig? Eerstens help dit nie om met oogklappe deur die lewe te gaan en te dink die probleem sal weggaan as ’n mens dit ignoreer nie.

En ja, die sêding “charity begins at home” is inderdaad waar. Maar as ’n mens nog duur speelgoed kan bekostig en gereeld kan uiteet, kan ’n mens maar gerus die beursie oopmaak en help om iemand anders se nood te verlig. Dan kan ’n mens met trots sê dat jy ’n waardevolle bydrae tot die samelewing lewer.

Baie dankie vir dié medemenslikheid Ons het ’n dame, tannie Kollie Swart, hier in Huis Boland. Sy is oud en sy het vandat sy 11 jaar oud is, erge rumatoïede artritis.

Sy het ’n gewas op haar skildklier wat haar lugpyp toedruk en sy mag glad nie lê nie.

Boonop het sy nou nog borskanker ook. Sy sit 24 uur per dag in ’n elektroniese stoel wat haar regop tel om te kan staan, sodat sy gewas kan word en toilet toe kan gaan.

Vir baie jare sit sy dag en nag regop in die spesiale stoel. Woensdag 4 April het ’n rat in die meganisme van die stoel gebreek.

Nêrens kon ons iemand kry wat die stoel voor die naweek kon regmaak, of ’n rat te koop kry nie.

Een persoon wat uitgekom het, het haar ’n plaas se geld gevra om net te kom kyk.

Na ’n lang gesoek en baie kilometers verder is ons verwys na Chris van Reenen van ’n ingenieursmaatskappy, All Gear Engineering in Montague Gardens.

Dit was reeds 16:30 toe ons by hom kom met

die stukkende meganisme van die stoel.

Hy het gesê dit sal nie voor die Donderdag ná die Paasnaweek gedoen kan word nie, weens baie dringende werk wat hulle moes afhandel, maar hy het egter onderneem om te kyk wat hy kan doen.

Hy het self die Donderdag ses ure gebruik om die rat te draai op die draaibank.

Donderdagmiddag om 15:00 het Chris gebel en gesê ons kan die onderdeel kom haal.

In plaas van R2 200 het hy haar slegs R900 gevra en om 16:00 kon ons die stoel weer aanmekaar sit sodat die vrou opgelig kon word.

Teen daardie tyd was haar hele liggaam in pyn weens die ongemaklike sit in ’n stoel wat nie geskik is vir haar nie.

Sy is so innig dankbaar en wil net baie, baie dankie sê aan Chris van Reenen vir sy absolute uitmuntende diens en medemenslikheid.

Not enough cop cars, then?

We often hear that the police do not have enough vehicle resources to get to everything. Interesting because I’ve been visiting my friend in Kraaifontein Friday, Saturday and Sunday and on all three days two police vans were standing in two yards opposite each other near the Palms.

This is now in the evening and right througout the day. So maybe the officers are off but surely these vans should be at their stations? Would love to hear what the explanation for this is.

WO Erica Crous, Brackenfell police spokesperson, responds: The Brackenfell police urge residents to report such incidents as above but to please provide the specific police station the car is from, (and registration number), which will be indicated on the side of the car.

Police members from across the peninsula live in the area and it would be easier to investigate such matters if they can determine where the vehicle is from. In certain cases officers have authorisation to take a vehicle home in case they need it early the next morning.

Last week I was taking a walk to Century City in Canal Walk and as I approached the entrance that faces the new hotel overlooking the short bridge I saw two young children lying next to the water canal indulging in sexual intercourse. It was disturbing to see.

Firstly, because they were both under 14 years of age. The boy was 13 and the girl even younger than that! I decided to walk next to them and confront them but I realised that this was a matter the parents should address. Unfortunately I could not get hold of their parents.

My concern is that parents drop off their children to hang out at Canal Walk, totally unsupervised.

It’s one thing if the children were more aware of what they are doing, but it’s another to see clearly how underage they were. This was indeed disturbing to see. So I contacted my friend and she advised me to call the newspapers and state this story as a matter of urgency.

Parents must be aware what their children could get up to while hanging out at the shopping centres.

‘Lots of jobs in IT’ CERRIN HENDRICKS

“We invited these children here to show them what they can aspire to; that information technology (IT) is currently an industry with hundreds of job opportunities. We want them to see that they can make a living for themselves and better themselves through education and technology.”

This is what Michelle Stuckie had to say regarding the third annual IT Expo at Parklands College, this time at their brand new secondary school campus off Sandown Road.

The school invited learners from disadvantaged schools from around the Cape, including Fezeka High School, Cape College High School, Bernadino Heights High School and Rylands High School, to learn about the

current boom in the IT industry and the jobs and internships available for those about to leave school or already out of school.

The majority of learners who attended were in Grade 9, and they received valuable advice on which subjects to choose next year and how to achieve their goal of working in the IT industry.

Speakers from various fields ranging from audio engineering to software solutions spoke at the event, and workshops were run by the Parklands College staff members.

Near the end of the day a prize-giving was held for a lucky draw.

The two main prizes of a colour laser printer sponsored by Ricoh and an iPad 2.0 provided by the Core Group, were won by Siyabulela Booi from Fezeka High School and Astrid Paulse from Bernadino Heights High School respectively.

Help Little Fighters fight cancer REYANA STEYN

Fighting for children who have been diagnosed with cancer – this is why the Little Fighter Cancer Trust was formed.

The amazing concert is set to take place on Sunday 29 July and will showcase artists such as Laurika Rauch, Andriëtte Norman, Alan Committie, Zanne Stapelberg, ADAM, Heinz Winckler, Koos Kombuis, Wicus van der Merwe, Lize Beekman, Brandon October, Emo Adams and Take Note, Pedro Kruger and Dowwe Dolla.

“We are trying to raise money to help the families of the children who have been diagnosed with cancer,” says Mandie Erasmus from the Little Fighter Cancer Trust.

“Cancer is not a thing that happens to a person of a certain age. We need to create awareness in South Africa as more children are being diagnosed and these families need support.”

She says some of the parents lose their jobs and businesses because of the medical bills and because they want to give their children the best medical care.

“These people need petrol money, food, clothes and money for hospital and doctor bills and that is where we come in and try to assist.”

The trust was started in 2010 by Tania Goslett and Thomas Engela in Paarl.

They were offering support to

families but then they realised that they needed to be a bigger trust to offer assistance to more families. In less than a year they were offering support to 40 families all over Cape Town and even Johannesburg.

The trust shows support to any child diagnosed with cancer under 18, but if the child is over the age and still has cancer, the relationship will continue.

Erasmus came on board after her mother, grandmother and grandfather died of cancer.

“Cancer patients have always been close to my heart. I started reading the trust’s Facebook page and after Tania and Thomas asked me to get involved I started doing fundraisers.”

From these fundraisers outreach programmes were started and the Bag of Hope project was born – the trust makes up food parcels for the families of the cancer children, they also refurbish the beds and drawers. Families also receive bags containing cereal, noodles, coffee, tea, sugar, shampoo, conditioner, toiletries and other things they may need.

Children receive bags with clothes, shoes, stationery, toys, toiletries, juices, a blanket – all the essentials they may need.

“That’s where we come in: we distribute bags to the mothers with nice feminine goodies and flowers.

We will also be cooking a nice lunch for them on the day.”

She says it is “heartwarming” to be one of the beneficiaries of the ’Cause We Can!/Want On Kan! concert.

“We are very humbled to have been selected as a beneficiary.”

Controlled burn gets go­ahead LEON STEENKAMP

Local authorities have reconsidered plans to use fire to control invasive vegetation at a local nature reserve.

The Blaauwberg Subcouncil rescinded a decision to allow the controlled burning of the Rietvlei Wetland Reserve adjacent to the Waves Edge suburb at its monthly meeting last week.

The initial application for the project on erf 22277 situated on the corner of Marine Drive and Otto du Plessis Drive served before the subcouncil in November.

The application, which was submitted by Koos Retief, area manager for the Milnerton region of the Table Bay Nature Reserve was then denied after not complying with conditions set out in the City’s Air Quality Management By-law.

The main problem with the burning of the bulrushes was the huge amounts of smoke and ash this will cause.

Traffic officials also expressed fears that this might result in motor vehicle accidents on both the main roads.

Legal claims from the adjoining residents due to the smoke and ash fall-out on their properties were also a consideration.

The application last week included a presentation by Retief similar to the one that was given during a public meeting on 12 April to inform affected residents of the project.

Neighbouring residents have been plagued by the seeds of this plant that is distributed through wind. The seeds lead to a host of problems which include health issues like asthma and sinus as well as financial expenditure with regards to the continual cleaning of property.

Local ward councillor Marissa Jansen van Vuuren said the application served before the council a second time following more complaints from the public.

“Because of the complaints we received the Subcouncil chose to look at the application from a more accommodating standpoint,” Jansen van Vuuren explained.

She rescinded the Subcouncil’s original decision which was fol-

lowed by the approval of the application.

Although work is currently under way to cut the reeds, this is both time and labour intensive.

Retief said the burn will not only help in the removal of bulk dry material which will ease the cutting process but will also reduce the possibility of unwanted wild fires.

Fears that the controlled burn might lead to the loss of animal life

was one of the concerns raised at the public meeting.

Representatives of the SPCA Good Hope were also asked to attend the subcouncil meeting to comment in this regard. Their main concern was how animals injured in the burn would be treated.

“We would like to know if animals injured in the fire will be euthanised on site,” asked Gareth Petterson of the SPCA’s wildlife unit.

Retief said that they have the city’s veterinary services at their disposal should such cases arise.

“We believe the site offers safety in that half of the area is covered with water which provides a safety zone for animals,” he said.

Retief added that they will take sufficient precautions ahead of the burn like making a sweep of the area beforehand to relocate as many animals as possible.

He said that is it unavoidable that there will be animal mortality during the burn.

“This might affect some individual animals but will not influence the population of species. In fact animals quickly repopulate a burnt area, due to the new growth that follows,” he explained.

As a safety measure a five metre wide fire-break has been cut along the residential edge.

Retief said the controlled burn will take place at the end of the month or at the beginning of May. “The public will however be notified a couple of weeks beforehand through a notice in the media and pamphlets distributed in their mailboxes,” he said.

This will be one of the last cleanups before winter starts with the projects continuing in August.

Volunteers are asked to bring along blankets, decent shoes or old clothes that will be donated to Salt – a charity organisation that helps disadvantaged residents in Table View, Joe Slovo and Du Noon.

The Blaauwberg Art Society (BASE) will be holding their next meeting at the Milnerton Bowls Club, Pienaar Road, Milnerton on Tuesday 1 May at 19:00.

BASE will be hosting a demonstration by internationally-known South African artist Derric van Rensburg.

Van Rensburg is well-known for his impressionistic-styled paintings influenced by the Overberg region where he lives. He started out by studying graphic art in Cape Town and worked closely with the commercial side of the arts more than six years.

The his artistic career took a turn as he started painting in acrylics and painting local landscapes. His work is now showcased in homes and well-known galleries all over the world and he has also exhibited in London, Portugal, Germany and America.

Non-members of the society are welcome.

The word “genius” is often a much-prostituted term because like beauty, genius is in the eye of the beholder.

There is no doubt however that the highly gifted and master guitarist Louis Greeff of the band Omega Limited was a world-class musical maestro during the 60s to 80s and was said by many of his peers to be as brilliant as Jimi Hendrix.

Famous for their rendition of Tchaikovsky One, Omega Limited rocked Southern Africa and like the Idiots and The Alpha Set, had dance floors alight with their unique brand

of music.

The Omega Limited “act” was an aggressive and exciting show which included Louis setting his guitar alight, playing rock songs with his teeth and jumping off the stage to dance with his adoring fans.

The show was an extravaganza filled with excess, outrageousness and an unrestrained demonstration of musical talent. Omega Limited had it all. A good-looking frontman in the guise of Louis synergised by the likes of Mike Brand (drummer), Derek Gordon (vocals, guitar and keyboards)

Blues makes a date with Rock The very first of the new Where Blues Meets Rock shows will take place at the Durbanville Golf Club this coming Sunday, 29 April.

The show promises a great line-up with Gerald Clark opening things up on acoustic guitar, stompbox and telephone.

Then the Very Talented Sannie Fox with her band, Machineri, will rock the house before Boulevard Blues take it home with some very cool guests including Sannie, Gerald and many more.

Where Blues Meets Rock Machineri

is a show where both genres are well represented and intertwined to provide an interesting, ever changing and highly entertaining three and half hours of great live music.

This will be a monthly event with either Boulevard Blues or Pebbleman being the house band for the evening.

Happy hour will be from 17:00 to 18:00 and entrance costs R50.

The two have done lots of work with other bands and ended up playing together as guests in another band at the Wacky Wine Festival in Robertson.

’n Derde agtereenvolgende oorwinning die afgelope naweek maak Durbanville/ Bellville tans die vroeë voorloper op die punteleer in die A-afdeling van die WP se Super-rugbyliga.

Maar dit was grootliks ’n teleurstellende naweek vir die spanne in die Tygerbergstreek, behalwe dat Noordelike/Northlinkkollege en Bellville darem ook aan die wenkant was.

Nadat die Durbies verlede Woensdag ’n veelseggende oorwinning van 27-19 oor Universiteit Kaapstad behaal het, het hulle Saterdag ook 32-10 met die Victoriane afgereken. Die Ikeys se nederlaag was die eerste ná 14 agtereenvolgende oorwinnings sedert verlede seisoen in die Superliga. Durbanville se voorhoede het die studentespan deeglik laat les opsê.

Ook in die wedstryd teen die Victoriane is die studentespan voorlangs ore aangesit en danksy die Durbies se baie balbesit het hulle die meeste aanvalswerk gedoen. Daarmee is ’n bonuspuntdrie ook bewerkstellig.

Hoewel Tygerberg-klub 18-34 teen Schotsche Kloof/Walmer verloor het – nadat hy met die draaislag nog 18-12 voor was – kon die Kaapse besoekers eers kort voor die einde ’n oorwinning verseker.
