Lockdown: The kids are not okay, parents say DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
W
ith the opening of schools extended to 14 February, the pandemic is taking a heavy toll on children. As parents may have mixed emotions about the impact of schools opening so late in the term, children show their anxiety by throwing tantrums and displaying anti-social behaviour and depression. A mother in Brackenfell tells of the impact lockdown regulations had on her nineyear-old daughter. “My daughter has always had a strong personality, so much so that I sometimes worried that she was overconfident. But with lockdown her personality started to change,” says the parent whose name is not published to protect the identity of the child. “When she had to go back to school last year, she did not want to and the things she said had me very worried. She started getting panic attacks and was referred to a psychologist who diagnosed her with social anxiety. She didn’t want to be around people at all and said things like ‘What does anything matter and why are we alive anyway?’ “Every day is different; some days better than others,” she says. The identity of all the parents TygerBurger spoke to will be protected. One such parent is very worried about her son. “He is generally a quiet child, but its getting worse. He misses his friends and routine. He is tired of playing computer games and bored with himself,” she says. Yet another parent spoke out about her two children.

“During hard lockdown my 11-year-old did not want to do anything and was paranoid about everything. Yesterday he told me, ‘Schools must open now, I cant handle this anymore’! His younger sister is very emotional as she misses her friends,” the mom says. Several other parents TygerBurger spoke to say their children have shown behavioural changes mostly due to the fact that they are bored and miss interaction with their friends, and are prone to temper tantrums. “My teenager ended up in the clinic last year and is currently on anti-depression medication. She was on a waiting list to get into the clinic as there were so many cases,” one mom says. Dr Iqbal Karbanee, paediatrician at Cape Gate Mediclinic and CEO of Paed-IQ Babyline, says this behaviour may be a normal reaction under the current uncertainty. Karbanee says it is essential to prioritise the wellbeing of your child or children during this uncertain time. “We are seeing an increase in the number of children displaying unusual behaviour as a direct consequence of the circumstances brought on by the pandemic,” he says. These changes can be very subtle, and may be mistaken for bad behaviour, rather than seen in context, which if not addressed correctly, could have a long-term negative impact. Children under the age of three may be experiencing mood swings, nightmares, fidgeting or the sudden onset of bedwetting. “I’ve seen this in my own child, who suddenly started getting nightmares of getting sick after eating food given to her by a stranger.
“This anxiety was a direct result of learning at school that she should not share food or cutlery because it may make her sick,” explains Karbanee. He adds that children are having to unlearn many social norms, from “sharing is caring” to not sharing at all, given how the coronavirus is spread. This can create confusion. Young children that have not been going to crèche may become less confident in social settings and even refuse to interact with their peers. “Anxiety may turn usually sociable and playful children into clingy, tearful kids who instead of being happy to go to crèche, only want to sit on their mothers’ laps.” How to identify anxiety in children “Parents know their children. Every child has a baseline behaviour. If they do something that deviates from their normal baseline set of behaviours, then it may very well be that your child is being impacted by the uncertainty brought on by the pandemic,” explains Karbanee. Karbanee says it is also essential for parents to become aware of their own emotional states, as their own anxiety could spill over to the child. “For school-going children, it is best to deal with it cognitively through reasoning or explaining to them and talking to them about what is happening; both around them and their own emotional state of being. “For children who are in the process of developing their cognitive skills and cannot yet reason, it is best for the parents to be extra sensitive to their children’s needs,” he advises.
VERVOLG VAN BLADSY 1 Kol.
CapeGate community cares CapeGate Shopping Centre recently installed a designated donation station on the lower level at entrance eight, opposite centre management and Old Mutual. The four-part box station allows the community to support two to four different charities on a quarterly basis. CapeGate’s current call for donations is school clothes and shoes for Trevor Manuel Primary School as well as toiletries and nonperishable foods for child welfare. The first beneficiaries of this initiative, namely Fisantekraal Animal Welfare, MES Cape Town and Miracle Kidz Safe House, were happy to receive a generous supply of food, clothing and toys from the CapeGate community during the last quarter of 2020. “During a challenging time for many people, the question was not whether to give but rather what can people give that they have in their hand, and the CapeGate community
really pulled together to show that they care about others,” says marketing manager Amanda McCarthy. In addition to the donation station, CapeGate has just partnered with Fisantekraal Primary School to provide much needed stationery supplies in preparation for the reopening of schools. The drop-off point for all stationery donations is at the CapeGate information desk on the upper level, opposite Edgars. The following items can be dropped off up until 31 January: white board markers, HB pencils, rulers, erasers, glue sticks, twist wax crayons, counter books, Grade 1, 2 and 3 stationery kits. CapeGate will also sponsor one learner’s stationery and school uniform for the 2021 school year. If you know of a learner you think deserves this Kick Starter Kit, nominate them by 31 January 2021. Loop lig naby Morningstar ESMÉ ERASMUS
F
Murder suspects appear in court
The four suspects connected to the murder of Welgelegen resident Vincent Charles Bartes will reappear in court later this month. The suspects, Jamie Lee Moses (21) and three minors aged 15 to 17 years, appeared at the Bellville magistrate’s court on Thursday 28 January. The quartet is charged with the murder of Bartes, says Eric Ntabazalila, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority. “The state believes that on 24 January the accused burnt the deceased with boiling water and stabbed him to death. “They then took his vehicle, a MercedesBenz,” Ntabazalila says. Bartes died of asphyxiation. The case has been postponed to 10 February for a formal bail application. Ntabazalila, however says that the state is opposing bail due to the seriousness of the matter. Moses has been remanded to the Pollsmoor Prison while the other accused have been remanded at a place of safety, Ntabazalila says. Bartes was attacked at his house in General Hendrik Schoeman Street, Welgelegen, in Parow between 21:00 and 22:00. – Richard Roberts

To keep up with the spirit of social distancing, auditions will be held virtually. Participants are required to create a video of themselves singing for 30 seconds. According to a statement, it’s important for the participants to prepare their 30second-long clip and all the relevant information before they log onto the Mzansi Magic website to submit their entry. “This exciting new format gives people who could not get to the designated venues
an opportunity they have been dreaming of but could not access due to limited resources.” Gavin Wratten, the executive producer and director for SIC Entertainment which produces Idols SA, told TygerBurger all participants will be informed about the status of their audition. “Every contestant who uploads an audition will get numerous notifications informing them if it was successful or not,” he said. The online auditions platform opened on Friday 29 January. The submission portal will close at either 22:00 on Sunday 14 February or after the first 15 000 entries. Prof Johan Dempers, head of the division of forensic pathology at the University of Stellenbosch, passed away recently due to Covid-19 complications. Here he is with his son, Daniel.
Covid-19 claims beloved professor T
he Western Cape government health’s forensic pathology services (FPS) last week announced with great sadness the passing of Prof Johan Dempers. Dempers passed away on Tuesday 26 January after being diagnosed with Covid-19 nearly a month ago on Monday 21 December 2020. “He was a colleague and a friend, and he played an integral part in the FPS team. He was passionate about forensic pathology as a pathologist and embodied the ideal example as a mentor and teacher. “We convey our deepest condolences to his wife, son, daughter and extended family, as well as his FPS colleagues, his friends and colleagues within the division of forensic medicine, University of Stellenbosch as well as the Tygerberg forensic pathology
laboratory and beyond,” the department said in a statement. “Dempers’ passing has left a huge void, both from an academic as well as a service delivery perspective. Colleagues are and will be struggling to come to terms with his untimely passing. He was part of the forensic pathology service executive team and no meeting will be the same again,” says Vonita Thompson, FPS director. Dempers was born on 13 June 1969. “We will remember him as a fierce forensic pathologist, discipline specific, honest and loyal to our profession, with the utmost integrity, an enthusiastic teacher and a consummate professional,” says Prof Lorna Martin, head of the clinical department of forensic medicine and toxicology at the University of Cape Town.
Survey for watch groups SÊ JOU SÊ!
The City of Cape Town is inviting neighbourhood watches to participate in a survey to get a clearer understanding of the role mobile applications or other technology play in helping neighbourhood watches (NHWs) to keep communities safe. The app survey which was released last week was sent to those neighbourhood watches using WhatsApp and Telegram platforms in their daily operations. A statement reads that the objective of the current survey is to find out which platforms are already in use, how effective they are and to inform the City of the applications they use to communicate with the community and other crime prevention role players. The City’s development team follows an inclusive process and will take into
consideration all feedback received from NHWs. The City’s Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith said it’s important to the City to hear directly from watch groups on what online and mobile applications they currently use as this will inform and drive the development of a City mobile app. “The app will allow NHWs to improve on their response time, share valuable information and add value as an important link between the City’s enforcement agencies and the community. “NHWs assist the City in our fight against crime and we will continue with the support and the development of programmes to further strengthen our priority to keep communities safe.” Participation in the survey has now been extended to Friday 12 February.

edical staff at hospitals across Cape Town are experiencing a change of scenery when their shifts change – in the form of bagpipes. Members of the Cape Town Highlanders Pipe Band Association have started playing at different hospitals to pay tribute to those frontline workers battling the Covid-19 pandemic. Mike Taljaard, the band officer of the association, who lives in Panorama, says their first hospital concert took place last week at Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt hospital in Bell-

ville. A total of 14 of the 32 members of the band took to the streets in front of the hospital, playing old bagpipe band favourites like Scotland the Brave and Amazing Grace. Staff of the hospital and passers-by gathered in front of the building and took videos, while others stood in windows or the raised staff parking area, looking down. Taljaard says a highlight was when an audiologist came to speak to them, amazed to hear a band of pipers and drummers playing together. “And it’s nice when people clap hands.” Louis Leipoldt was their first hospital of choice, because of one the members’ wives working there. Once they got the all-clear to play there, they started contacting other hospitals in the area. They played from 18:30 to 19:15, as this is when the shifts change and new personnel take over. The group printed a special drum cover which says “Supporting Frontline Workers,” especially for their hospitals project. According to Taljaard they started the project in part because they cannot perform anymore, as well as a way of giving back to those doing so much for the ordinary citizen. They have a band member who is a doctor, family members who are doctors or who work at hospitals and some of their members have had the virus themselves. Yesterday they played at Vincent Pallotti Hospital in Pinelands. They’ve lined up playing gigs at 10 hospitals in total, but are willing to play at more. The band is one of three in Cape Town. They regularly tour overseas (when it’s allowed) and are based at the Castle of Good Hope. Currently the band gets together via Zoom to practise. Voormalige Mev. My suster is positief getoets vir Covid-19.
GrandWest celebrates 20 years of good times TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07 It’s been just over 20 years since Sun International opened the doors of GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World. The official open day on 19 December 2000 saw 23 000 flock to the entertainment destination. The first jackpot was R15 000, and was won shortly after opening, followed soon thereafter by the luckiest punter of the morning who won a R10 000 jackpot and then another R12 000 during his first hour on the casino floor. In an effort to celebrate two decades of existence, a small birthday lunch was held on Friday 11 December. Prior to the Covid-19 lockdown, GrandWest attracted 550 000 visitors a month and on show nights staff routinely dealt with up to 15 000 people passing through to visit the casino, to watch shows, or to visit restaurants and bars in the complex. A statement explained the construction process of GrandWest: “The initial construction required 3.6 million bricks to be laid which equates to 1 000 houses. Over 50km of cabling was installed and a daily average of 300 cubic metres of concrete was sunk, the same as 50 readymix trucks lined up behind each other, pouring 15 tons of concrete each day. “GrandWest also spent a further R38 million on road enhancement to complete the Vanguard Overpass Bridge and entrance to the complex. Substantial improvements, including safe pedestrian facilities, were made to the intersections of Vanguard Drive with Viking Way, Voortrekker Road and Denneboom
Road, and Viking Way and Showground Road. Over the course of the 20 years the property was further developed to add a 7 000-seater arena, an undercover parking garage and an exhibition space.” Under the current lockdown regulations, the R1.5 billion development is now restricted to only 50% of capacity. General manager Mervyn Naidoo said GrandWest remains – to this day – an icon of the entertainment landscape. “We have adapted to the ‘new normal’. We have strictly implemented all of the Covid-19 protocols and we have seen our trading levels improving month on month.” When President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the hard lockdown on 27 March last year GrandWest shut its doors for three months. “We have been operating since reopening at the end of June last year. Guests have been incredibly supportive, and have responded well to our stringent health and safety protocols,” Naidoo told TygerBurger. In the case of staff members testing positive, Naidoo said the employee would be required to quarantine while tracking and tracing immediately gets underway. “Other staff members who came into contact with them might also be required to quarantine, or be monitored and tested depending on the level of interaction. A specialised cleaning team decontaminates areas.” Naidoo said business in general is muted given the 50% floor capacity. “The ban on serving alcohol and significantly reduced operating hours as a result of the curfew have also affected operations.”

Empower yourself with Toastmasters T
he Winelands Toastermasters Club celebrated its 600th club meeting in January – building on the legacy of those who started the club about 30 years ago. During the meeting several past presidents paid tribute – including Charmaine Sparrow, Michelle Williams, Anlie Botha and Annemie Muller. All highlighted the confidence and skills that Toastmasters build and the safe and supportive environment that the club offers. “Winelands Toastmasters is the fertile ground of enthusiasm, involvement and support that its members need,” Charmaine Sparrow, club president from 2011 to 2012, said. “It’s a learning laboratory – not only to develop speaking skills, but also invaluable leadership skills. It is of utmost importance to recognise, in this time of uncertainty, that there is a need within yourself and in society for growth and leadership,” she said. The club, which is located in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, is known for being one of the premier clubs in South Africa. In the 30 years of its existence, the club was awarded Distinguished Club five times. It was awarded the President’s Distinguished Club 11 times. Club presidents have been awarded Division President of the Year at least twice. In 2013/’14 and 2015/’16 the club was voted
the Top Club in District 74 – which is an award for the best club in Southern Africa. The club is ranking in the top five clubs in District 74 since then. The club meets are for the area Tyger Valley, Durbanville and Bellville. Toastmasters aims to empower members to practise public speaking, to become more effective communicators and to build strong leadership skills. Toastmasters prides itself as being a supportive and positive learning opportunity, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth. Due to gathering restrictions, they are currently meeting via Zoom. Comien Grobler, vice president for public relations of the club, said a lot of people think that meeting virtually to conquer your fears of public speaking does not do justice. “However, it is phenomenal to see how our members have improved their online appearance and ability to speak to a camera audience since we started meeting online. “With a lot of business meetings moving virtual nowadays, this is a very important skill to have,” Grobler said. Meetings take place every second Thursday of the month from 19:00, and every third Saturday of the month from 08:30. Community supports Mediclinic staff W
hen the community of Durbanville heard about the pressure on health workers on the front line amid the second wave of Covid-19, they stepped in. Several donations of food and sweet treats were delivered to the hospital to show appreciation for the staff’s dedication. “It is truly heart-warming to see how the Durbanville community has come together and provided not only support but encouragement, donations, understanding and patience as we endeavour to serve the community during challenging times,” says Christine Tay-
lor, hospital general manager of Mediclinic Durbanville. “The prayers, numerous messages and treats provided by the community have kept our team going during very challenging times. “Mediclinic Durbanville would like to express our deepest appreciation to the members of the community for their continued support during the pandemic,” Taylor says. “We recognise that our staff, doctors, allied healthcare workers and supporting contractors are on the front line of the pandemic. The community coming forward to assist and support us, offers valuable
encouragement and inspiration for all those delivering care in our hospital,” she says. “Mediclinic Durbanville continues to encourage people to adhere to national guidelines on social distancing, the use of masks in public and safe hygiene practices. Minimising transmission remains a key factor in managing the effects of the pandemic and everyone needs to play their part in preventing further spread. “We would like to encourage the public to continue to seek care from their healthcare providers as required and not to put their health at risk by delaying care,” she says.

Palliative care takes back seat during pandemic THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo With Thursday 4 February being World Cancer Day, TygerBurger looks into how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected patients who make use of facilities for treatment, patient management in the public sector and the provincial health department’s plan of action in minimising the risk of exposure at facilities. The pandemic has affected the lives of many chronic disease patients, causing panic about what would become of them if the need for urgent medical care comes. Gloria Mbunyana from Kraaifontein says last year was the most worrysome period she had to deal with her three-year battle with breast cancer. “From the day the lockdown was announced in March, I had
questions if I would ever be able to continue receiving chemotherapy at Tygerberg hospital,” she says. She soon realised there was no reason to worry because the management at the hospital had safeguarded the place. “There was absolutely no reason for us, patients, to worry because the hospital had everything taken care of.” Mbunyana says care for cancer patients has been the department’s priority from the beginning. Although the pandemic has not had much of an effect on the paediatric oncology department at Tygerberg Hospital, fear of the virus might have led to many children being undiagnosed. The pandemic also led to a slight decrease in paediatric cancer patients, probably due to pa-
rents being reluctant to access state hospitals due to Covid-19,” the hospital’s Rozaun Botes says. “The hospital did, however, see a reduction in referrals of adult patients in the third quarter of last year due to the limited numbers of oncology surgical lists and reduced movement of the population resulting in the hard lockdown. The referrals increased again in the last quarter,” she says. These do lead to delays in cancer patients whose primary treatment is surgical. Access to theatres and advanced imaging were limited and had to be negotiated on individual patient basis to ensure crucial investigations and operations were done for emergency purposes. “Long-term paediatric survivors could not access these necessary investigations and therefore
Head for the rolling hills The Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy (BHRC) offers a 92km trail network for mountain bikers through rolling hillsides, conservation areas, vineyards and farmland. Annual permits or day permits allow for access to multiple route options that cater for various skill and fitness levels. The BHRC is a registered non-profit organisation that forms part of the Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve. While the core focus is to care for, expand and sustain the remaining Renosterveld in the area, there is also an emphasis on community development. Unlike fynbos, which grows in poor soils, Renosterveld grows in very rich fertile soils. As a result, most of it has been replaced with vines and other commercial crops. Less than 4% of the original Renosterveld in the Western Cape remains. Concerned landowners together with Cape Nature Conservation initiated a conservation programme to protect the remaining vegetation, rehabilitate sensitive areas and reintroduce species lost to the area.
Member farms commit to implementing environmentally sustainable farming practices with conservation and protection of the renosterveld a major priority. The MTB permit fees go towards trail maintenance, alien clearing and community development. Only permit holders are allowed access to the trails from sunrise to sunset and bike boards must be displayed on handlebars. Annual permits valid until 31 December are available online with the option to collect from Cyclosport in Kuils River, Attitude Cycles in Brackenfell or Chris Willemse Cycles at Willowbridge. It costs R700 for a main member, R600 for a spouse, R500 for students and pensioners and R400 for juniors (u.18). Day permits cost R70 and are sold at the route access points, including Zevenwacht and Hazendal wine farms, and at Engen Soneike. V Visit www.bottelaryconservancy.co.za for details and a map.

were negatively affected. At the same time only one parent could accompany a child that had to be admitted for chemotherapy and parental discussion had to be online, sometimes difficult in the context of limited resources for families,” Botes explains. For immediate admissions, individual patient case negotiations took place with management to ensure access. “All other patients have continuing access to the oncology department as there has been no limits on seeing new patients.” During the third quarter in 2020, Botes explains that new referrals did reduce for all patients as they struggled to navigate through the primary health clinics and hospital outpatients during the hard lockdown of the second quarter. While some staff from the oncology unit have assis-
ted in the Covid-19 wards, those who remained managed the load without detriment to patients. With the paediatric oncology unit housed in a separate wing far from the Covid-19 wards, having good resources for personal protective equipment and strict access control, Botes says the unit has been fortunate in ensuring the safety of patients and staff all together. “Regardless of any pandemic children should be able to access the necessary health care management that will ensure cure and lead to healthy children. It is of vital importance that oncology patients do not delay attending their local clinics, hospitals or oncology unit if they have symptoms or problems. Any misinformation that the hospital or oncology unit is not a safe place because of the virus is strongly discouraged.”

SLICE OF LIFE

Beaches reopen: People across Cape Town took part in a peaceful protest action on Saturday 30 January against the government's decision to ban people from using beaches. Pictured are protestors at Bloubergstrand. Some of the people who took part in the protest went for a walk on the beach. Some even decided to go surfing. Police officials had their hands full and at least two people were arrested and taken to the police station where they were released with a warning. President Cyril Ramaphosa has since announced on Monday evening that a decline in the number of new cases meant the country could begin to ease some of the restrictions under level 3 lockdown. Public places such as beaches, dams, rivers, parks and public swimming pools has been reopened under strict health protocols. PHOTO: JACO MARAIS

afhaal. Toe ek my omstandighede aan
Uitstekende diens, baie dankie Jolene!

Die idee het by opgekom dat ek graag baie mense wou voed vir so min geld as moontlik.
Residents are encouraged to continue accessing essential health services at the City of Cape Town’s clinics. According to a statement from the City’s health department several overflow facilities opened in July last year to increase capacity at clinics and to ensure continuous services amid the Covid-19 pandemic. “We currently have 34 overflow facilities at our clinics and it is heartening to see residents continue to access our normal services and adhering to their health schedules, such as immunisation and antenatal and family planning services. While the current Covid-19 situation has impacted every aspect of our lives, and requires us to adhere to additional health protocols, there is still screening for HIV and TB, as well as medical checks for chronic conditions that need to be done and medication that needs to be collected,’ said the City’s Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien. By November last year there was a dramatic increase in the number of patients diagnosed with hypertension and diabetes, as well as the number of women who had cervical smear tests done (as opposed to June). The number of children under one year
who were fully immunised remained stable at an average of 3 100 children per month. The number of first antenatal visits remained stable at an average of 2 100 per month. Badroodien said the overflow facilities became necessary to enable adherence to Covid-19 protocols and to continue general service delivery. “Some of these services are critical such as child immunisations and visits by clients with chronic conditions. Other services also continue and residents are encouraged to visit the clinics when they need to.” The City’s health department has an appointment system. Patients are given a date and a time for their appointment based on their preference, appointment availability and urgency of care. The system includes all non-acute services. Residents should arrive 15 minutes before their appointment. Expect to be screened for Covid-19 symptoms. Only the person in need of the service should attend. Wear a mask and ensure it covers your nose and mouth at all times. Adhere to social distancing. Stay at home if you are not well on the day of the appointment and inform the clinic that you are unable to attend.
Help needed for Cape chicks KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels Sanccob’s Cape Town centre is currently rehabilitating well over a thousand Cape cormorant chicks after a mass abandonment by their parent birds on Robben Island. This after a three-day rescue operation last month to capture and transport more than 1 700 abandoned chicks by boat and then road to the Sanccob facility in Table View. Sanccob says their Penguin and Seabird Ranger – employed in partnership with Robben Island Museum – monitored the breeding birds on the Island and after hours of observing the chicks exposed to predation and extreme heat, a decision was made to intervene and collect the chicks to ensure their survival. “The chicks were in very poor condition on arrival, suffering from dehydration, malnourishment and severe heat exhaustion, and on 12 January began the chronicle of a wildlife response that is the second largest seabird rescue in the Western Cape since the MV Treasure oil spill of 2000,” Sanccob says. Sadly, approximately 9% of the rescued chicks died during transport or within the first 24 hours of admission. How can you help? Sanccob is currently battling with the fish, veterinary supplies and rehabilitation consumables needed to give every chick a chance to survive and one day bolster the wild population of Cape cormorants with
chicks of their own. . Donate towards fish and medical supplies. . If you prefer to donate in-kind, visit their Takealot Wish List. . Volunteer at the centre if you are locally based and have time to spare. Call 076 682 5130 for more information. . Share our social media posts – more followers aware of the progress and needs means more people to connect with to support our cause. “We are grateful for the support received thus far in light of the worldwide impact of Covid-19. “Skilled professionals and veterinary staff of collaborating rehabilitation facilities have volunteered their expertise and time and we appreciate the support. “Volunteers have come forward to prepare fish plates, attend to cleaning stations and assist with laundry. “We have also been privileged to have individuals, corporates, foundations, and zoos and aquaria donate while overcoming their own adversities, and for every donation we are thankful. “Our first temporary aviary has been erected to accommodate bigger chicks and provide them room to spread their wings. “Going forward, we will need additional structures to house the growing birds and will keep you informed as the chicks progress,” Sanccob says.
Tog doen ek so twee of drie keer per week bietjie “toneelspel” as ek op die kassie verskyn. 2. Jy was eers ’n joernalis. Totdat daar die een dag in standerd nege (deesdae graad 11) ’n driedaagse joernalistiekkursus by my hoërskool in Mitchells Plain aangebied is. Nadat ek my nasionale diploma verwerf het, het ek vir ’n kort tydperk as ’n junior joernalis by Rapport in Kaapstad gewerk.
In 2018 het ek as sportnuusleser by eNuus begin. 3. Wel, ek hoop regtig so.
So byvoorbeeld moes ek baiekeer my vriende in die steek laat as daar partytjies bygewoon is. Ek hoop my lewenstyl gaan eendag ’n toonbeeld vir my eie kinders wees. 6.
Cyclists reminded to stick to rules of the road Most cyclists have been yelled at or ill-treated by a driver at some point. “Cyclists don’t obey the rules of the road,” is one of the most common arguments drivers use to justify their behaviour. Sometimes justifiably so. “It doesn’t matter where or what you ride, please give respect to be respected,” said chair of the Pedal Power Association (PPA), Steve Hayward. Recently two cyclists collided with one another on the very popular Chapman’s Peak Drive owing to one of the cyclists losing control at high speed and causing the crash. The one cyclist rode away from the scene of the crash without even enquiring if the other rider was fine. The PPA receives regular complaints about cyclists’ behaviour on the road towards fellow riders and motorists. “We appeal to all cyclists to comply with all traffic laws and Covid-19 lockdown regulations.
“Let’s be courteous towards all road users and be part of the solution, not the problem,” Hayward said. Some useful tips for cyclists when sharing the road with other riders and drivers: Observe the latest level three lockdown regulations (as at time of print) for cycling: . Cyclists are able to continue training but not in groups; . Cycling is currently restricted to between the hours of 05:00 and 21:00 daily unless you are an essential worker and have a permit; . Masks are not required when exercising vigorously, but cyclists must keep a distance of 1.5m away from any other person. A mask needs to be worn at all other times; . Ride in single file and only pass other cyclists when it is safe to do so. Cycling two or more abreast in the road is illegal and is one of the practices that give motorists reason to be frustrated with cyclists; . When overtaking another cyclist do so
on the right with an audible verbal warning. Other cyclists do not expect you to pass on their left-hand side; . Cycle predictably and use hand signals so other road users know what your intentions are. Make life easy for drivers to predict what you’re going to do, and you will find it easier to stay safe; . Observe traffic signals, stop and yield signs and pedestrian crossings. If you want to be respected as a road user, you need to cycle responsibly; . When you reach a red traffic signal or stop sign, you should wait behind a cyclist who is already there. For some cyclists it seems to have become the norm to pass and stop in front of the rider ahead, even if it involves doing so in the middle of a pedestrian crossing or in the actual intersection well ahead of the traffic light. This is an incredibly offensive practice; . Don’t cycle against traffic. Riding in the opposite direction on the opposite side of the road is extremely dangerous.
