Long term sustainability of the NHS – have your say!

A Select Committee has been set up by the House of Lords to look at the long term sustainability of the NHS and it will report by the end of March 2017.

Its work was discussed at a dinner recently hosted in Westminster for the BHTA by Labour’s Health spokesperson in the Lords, Lord Hunt of Kings Heath. A former Health Minister, Philip Hunt emphasised in his remarks the need to fully integrate health and social care, whilst recognising the difficulty of bringing together systems based on different models of payment. Lord Willis of Knaresborough, a member of the select Committee, also attended the event and he spoke at it about the importance of innovation and the role of the Assistive Technology sector, which he said is very effectively represented by the BHTA.

We would like to hear from all sections and any interested member companies about what they would like to see in a BHTA submission. We will advise shortly on the timetable for making submissions once this has been agreed by the Select Committee. In the meantime, any initial thoughts should be sent to chris.rennard@bhta.com. The first session of the Committee heard from senior officials from the Department of Health and the Department for Communities and Local Government. They were considering questions such as:

It is not clear exactly how long our membership of the EU will continue, but after an amazing series of political events, the new Prime Minister Theresa May will now be planning for Brexit.

The Committee will not look at structural issues requiring re-organisation, but I expect them to look at issues such as taxation, personal health budgets, procurement and the role of the private sector. The BHTA will be seeking to make representations to it along the lines set out last year in our Manifesto: http://www.bhta.net/manifesto. In this document we made the case for how our member companies can help with improving patient care, getting better long term value for the taxpayer, and helping stimulate economic growth to pay for it.

After the vote the BHTA issued a briefing to members suggesting the need to consider:

Upcoming European legislation, its application in the UK and the significance Brussels may have going forward: •

Disruption to EU programmes and funding

The future of migration, including current EU residents and future immigration policy

•

Potential for further devolution in the UK

Investment decisions, contracts and licenses that refer to EU legislation

There remains a danger of a recession, but the Government is clearly acting to try and maintain confidence. It may even feel that it needs to ask the country to give it a vote of confidence in a General Election much sooner than that which is due in 2020.

New team member: Steve Perry In April we were pleased to announce that Steve Perry had joined BHTA as our new Marketing & Communications Manager.

Steve has been in the healthcare industry for over 30 years, mainly in the mobility sector but also with experience in aids to daily living at his time with Keep Able. He has been a BHTA member both in the manufacturing and the retail sector and has a clear focus on raising the BHTA’s profile to both professionals and the public.

BHTA/ICB Golf day was held at the Nottinghamshire Golf & Country Club The British weather provided all our golfers with a great day out in Nottingham. Thirteen teams from all sections and guests of BHTA fought to be crowned team of the year. In the end it was lucky 13 who came through to win with team Craig Kitchen (ICB), Mike Lord (BHTA) and Tony Mercer (Kirton Healthcare Group).

It was great to have Matt and Nicki Isherwood at the event to present the Phil Isherwood trophy to Dom Claxton (CSS Europe). Matt Isherwood picked up the second individual prize pictured here receiving his award from Nicki. After the golf all teams had a barbeque lunch followed by the presentation of awards.

We already have members and guests wanting to be kept up to date about the next golf day in 2017 and we will keep you all posted.

A big thanks to all players and companies who supported the golf day and made it a really good social event and to the ICB and BHTA teams who looked after everyone on the day.

Mobility Roadshow takes pole position at Silverstone The Mobility Roadshow 2016 was held at the home of the UK Grand Prix, Silverstone.

After initial first day problems surrounding the car parking and bus transfers, the weekend settled down and offered visitors the chance to try out a wide range of cars and mobility products. Both the BHTA and Shopmobility had stands at the show and it gave a good chance to hear the value and respect held for both organisations.

At the BHTA stand, we were busy engaging with consumers and discussing the Code of Practice, Trading Standards and the benefits of buying from our members. We were able to assist some consumers with specific mobility questions and were even able to re-direct them to members who were exhibiting at the show and further afield where relevant.

Our Shopmobility stand was able to meet with visiting members and consumers who all spoke highly of the federation. The main topic of conversation was the difficulties in obtaining and maintaining funding for the Shopmobility schemes; an ongoing challenge faced by many schemes across the UK. The Mobility Roadshow also featured the ‘Get Going Live’ event, providing young drivers with disabilities an opportunity to explore their mobility options for the future. Drivers young or old had the unique chance to not only consider what car they were interested in, but also how the vehicles worked with hoists and ramps for mobility products found on the market. It’s not unusual for the consumers to come with a preconceived idea of what they want, only to change their minds as they match their options together and test drive the variety of models available.

There also has to be a bit of kudos of being able to say you have driven the Silverstone circuit, even if at a more leisurely speed to World Champion Lewis Hamilton. No date or venue has been released for 2017 but we will be sure and keep you posted as soon as we know.

The Healthcare and Assistive Technology Society introduces the Practitioner of the Year 2016 award at British Healthcare Awards 2016 will see the creation of an award to celebrate and support the hugely important work of Society members.

The award will be presented by Society Patron, Baroness Glenys Thornton at the annual British Healthcare Trades Awards, to be held this year in London on 1st December.

Whether based in the private or public sector, the Society recognises that its members serve a vulnerable group of customers in a variety of ways, such as; • Assessing needs through manual handling, an assessment of needs, providing advice, listening and watching • Installing, maintaining and repairing products that are an essential part of maintaining an independent lifestyle • Working with others such as OT’s, physios, nurses and other healthcare professionals to ensure the best solution is found • Designing and creating products from daily living aids through to redesigning kitchens and bathrooms

How Will Brexit Affect Your Business?

The repercussions of Britain’s decision to leave the EU will undoubtedly have a lasting impact.

While many of the long-term effects of Brexit are still only speculative, the more immediate repercussions are clearer.

A pall has been cast over Britain’s economy, with Goldman Sachs predicting a mild recession by early 2017. The initial signs of this forecast can already be observed in the weakened value of the pound, which fell about 12 per cent the day after the vote, bottoming out at a 30-year low. Furthermore, international investors have already begun to withdraw their support from UK businesses.

Despite Britain’s current tumultuous financial environment, SMEs should remain calm. Britain will remain a member of the EU until the negotiations for the terms of its decoupling are finalised. This process will take at least two years, meaning that UK businesses will continue to have access to more than 500 million EU customers. However, that time should additionally be spent finding alternatives to EU

suppliers and customers in case Britain is unable to secure access to the single market.

Yet, even with EU trade agreements still accessible to UK businesses for the time being, higher tariffs may eventually be placed on UK imports and exports. This may then force UK SMEs to raise their prices by as much as 10 per cent, according to a survey conducted by Bidvine, a professional services marketplace. As a reaction to the inflated cost of goods, Britons may alter their spending habits and limit their impulse buys. For these reasons, your business should consider alternatives— such as participating in the online marketplace.

While the full effects of Brexit have yet to be seen, UK businesses— both large and small—must remain optimistic and focus their efforts on weathering the current economic turmoil. Lifestyle and Mobility win Retailer of the Month award Lifestyle and Mobility, with showrooms in Basildon, SouthendOn-Sea and Salisbury, won the TGA Regional Retailer of the Month Award for July. The company received exclusive trade discounts for a month, free PR support and a bottle of champagne.
