Furniture design that’s totally out there Gloster: bringing some fresh air to garden furniture If you regard ground-breaking design as an essential in your life, its location is irrelevant. Whether it is contained within four walls - or open to the gods and the elements - the same rules apply. The rules of colour and form; of use and comfort; of creativity that causes a frisson of pleasure every time it catches your eye. Gloster Furniture understands this thinking perfectly, and for some 50 years has been challenging conventional wisdom about exterior furniture. We love their sense of adventure, even to the point of taking traditionally interior concepts straight outdoors.

UBER seeks out the best in design - Gloster Furniture

Cloud: The Cloud takes the plump, curlup-and-snooze sofa and turns it into an all-weather concept. Quite literally, this completely upholstered range is 100% waterproof so you can take the inside, outside. Each Cloud unit is available in a choice of three fabric colours - Onyx, Ivory and Taupe. The range also includes tables with tops in slatted teak or quartz stone.

Asta: Stylish, stackable, contemporary and out there (in every sense), this Italian designed collection features stainless steel rods bent and welded to create a continuous curved form. You can also mix things up and change the mood with different changeable sling seat colours. For 2012, Gloster has also launched a stackable dining chair with and without arms, as well as a deep seating lounge chair and ottoman.

Club: Like Cloud left, Club continues the outdoor lounge concept, this time with the best of 1930s retro design. The seat and sides of the chairs are sensuously shaped and moulded into soft flowing curves that complement the tungsten colour powder-coated aluminium base. Club can also be configured into a host of combinations. A free-standing ottoman and two sizes of side table complete the collection.

Azore: We love this range, with its melding of subtle curves and sharp angles. Launched in matte white and black colour schemes, a further colour - tungsten - brings together a warm silver grey frame finish with seat and back panels in an iridescent Mercury colour sling fabric. The Azore range consists of a stackable dining chair, three different sizes of dining table, a side table and a stacking sunlounger.

Every size Every guise Design expertise from the design practice at Uber

uber-lifestyle.com // 0845 0773280

Crucially, though, we are first and foremost passionate designers. And, through lean and efficient working, we can offer highly competitive services for every kind of client

the design practice at Uber has been nominated for seven international design awards this year alone. Now, we’re ready for your project… Single rooms, complete refurbishments or leading edge new-builds. Cheshire, Spain, Africa or Hong Kong, the diversity of both locations and projects is what’s so spectacular about The Design Practice at UBER. Our design practice, based in Knutsford, Cheshire, embraces every kind and size of design project, on behalf of design-centric clients all over the world. Our team, some 15 strong, comprises interior designers, interior architects, CAD technicians and the logistics and support staff to make beautiful work happen. On time and on budget. At any one time, we’ll have up to 30 worldclass design projects on our drawing boards and screens and indeed being installed in apartments, country houses, beach front houses and yachts. Just one recent completion is a breathtaking development called the Sanctuary, in Gibraltar (See over on pages 10 & 11). This collection of ultra-modern residences is set in a wildlife reserve and gives commanding views over the sea. Each also offers an entire floor of wellness rooms and suites, as well as lifts taking you up to a roof terrace combining entertainment, relaxation and fully planted eco gardens.

Crucially, though, we are first and foremost passionate designers. And, through lean and efficient working, we can offer highly competitive services for every kind of client. Value and transparency If you’ve never used a designer before, start here - because we offer a tiered level of consultancy options, each with the reassurance of fixed fees and no surprises. At every stage, you will find we operate with complete openness and put you in full control of the process.

Option 1: entry level. Many of our client relationships start very simply, perhaps creating a fresh new makeover of one or more rooms. Our entry package starts (as with all our Options) with an initial consultation. This is complimentary, and gives us the opportunity to look and listen to your thoughts and goals, your tastes and your budget. We then return to you with a fixed monthly fee proposal and an estimated duration, which avoids unexpected surprises. We then keep the dialogue flowing between you and the team investigating ideas, themes and products. This then leads to a design concept, and product ‘mood boards’ to help visualise the overall look and feel. Once you’re happy, we estimate all of the components such as fabric, wallcoverings, furniture and lighting, and value-engineer the selection to deliver the maximum impact from your budget. Then we handle all the management and logistics of any tradesmen and product procurement through to final instalment, positioning and styling.

7

We value-engineer to deliver the maximum impact from your budget

Option 2: Space planning including furniture and bespoke joinery Space is one commodity that is often in short supply. Yet there are many ways to create it and spatial planning is one of our many lines of expertise. Using advanced CAD software, our highly experienced design technicians can completely rework the footprint of a room. This is invaluable in, for example, evaluating the form and function of candidate furniture before you commit to placing an order. Or indeed we can make a room function in an entirely different way, injecting new life through ideas that elevate your everyday living. This Option can also include simple power and lighting drawing work, and indeed re-configuring walls if planning is not required.

The Design Practice at UBER offers a full, holistic design approach to your domain, right through to specifying the finer details of spec., materials, form and finish.

Th e v i e w from h eaven Perched high on a cliff face, Bayview is a brand new villa that puts the Cote d’AzurE at your feet. Under an Azure sky that only seems to exist in movies, you point your convertible up the winding road above the picture-perfect Riviera town of Villefranchesur-Mer. UBER seeks out the best in design - Villa Bayview

Bayview, a brand new villa completed in July 2012 has quite possibly the best vantage point in the South of France. Literally perched on a cliff, its commanding views take in St Jean Cap Ferrat, with a panorama stretching as far as Cap d’Antibes, Nice and Villefranche itself. Breathtaking by day and mesmerising at night, it is the perfect backdrop to an equally impressive property.

Although completed just a few months ago, the phenomenal landscaped gardens, roof terrace and lush lawned areas feel like they’ve been always been here. They have been artfully placed to do full justice to the extraordinary views and space, adding to the feeling of privileged peace and privacy as soon as you enter the grounds. It also enjoys the most natural form of air conditioning: your lofty position is served by a hint of fresh sea breeze.

This architect-designed villa is a contemporary marriage of glass and rough stone, with terraced areas on every level that merge seamlessly into their surroundings. Inside, the beautiful open-plan living and dining area - and indeed the whole concept of the villa - capitalises on its magnificent position. There are triple aspect views, floor to ceiling windows and access to private terraces from every room. The five bedrooms contain every luxury and the spacious bathrooms designed to the highest of specifications. The overarching feeling here is of light and space with sculpted baths set by huge windows; individually designed pieces of furniture; and a sculpted Italian artisanal staircase that stretches from top to bottom throughout the heart of the building. This is enhanced through inspired interior and exterior lighting design, modular furniture and Japanese sliding doors giving open plan living, dining and cooking areas that are both practical and aesthetic. Outside, the pool is bordered by a pool house that is complete with a fully equipped kitchen and outside lounge area with a shaded terrace. Privacy and tranquillity, style and chic, and a majestic vista you will never forget. It all comes together beautifully in this ultra-new creation.

Not going out Home cinema has come of age. In the hands of experts Sensory International, a stunning entertainment experience now starts from as little as £10,000. The year 2002. The first ever iPods appeared with their distinctive white-cord earpieces. The home cinema was starting to become a reality - albeit at a cost of at least a small fortune. And a company that was to become one of the UK’s foremost digital entertainment designers was born: Sensory International. Over their first decade, Sensory’s skills were honed in one of the most demanding sectors of all: super yachts. They designed and installed movie theatre systems that had to work seamlessly within the décor of exquisite, expensive surroundings. They also had to achieve unprecedented levels of reliability (calling out a video engineer in the middle of the Indian Ocean isn’t going to happen). Ten years on - and let’s stretch the marine analogy - you have a perfect storm: unprecedented levels of technical excellence, lower hardware prices, and Sensory’s unrivalled design knowledge have all come together. The result is an irresistible package: a professional, state of the art home theatre, at prices that start from around £10,000. 90” screens; a totally immersive experience of sound and vision; entertainment that you don’t so much watch as live and experience. An extraordinary leap into a new dimension of movies, TV and 3D has never been so attainable. Long before the hardware is specified or a screen is fired up, the Sensory experience starts with the basic question: location. Perhaps you have a living room, a spare bedroom or an out house where you have pictured your new theatre metamorphosing before your eyes. Neil Sherman from Sensory explains: “The location does need to meet certain criteria surrounding space, layout and suitability. We visited a pilot recently who had set his heart on converting his attic.

uber-lifestyle.com // 0845 0773280

www.sensoryinternational.com

We have installed many successful cinemas in attics but sadly this one wasn’t right. But on our way out, we spied a single garage that was being used to store junk. Suddenly we had our room…” The end result was an elegant, purpose-created space that has become that client’s temple to movies and entertainment. Home cinema packages Sensory offers Bronze, Silver and Gold home cinema packages. Neil adds: “The crucial thing is to get the planning right. We therefore offer a free site survey of your proposed space, and we only operate to the highest standards. If we don’t think a space will work, we will say so. But having converted everything from attics and cellars to barns and bedrooms, it’s amazing what can be achieved, and with stunning results.” A quick guide to Sensory’s packages and costs goes like this: Bronze: 90” screen projection system with a 5.1 in-wall/ceiling speaker surround sound system, together with a 3D-ready projector and dedicated remote control. Designed and installed from £10,000. Silver: 90” screen projection system with a Bowers & Wilkins in-wall/ceiling speaker system, brighter 3D projector and touch screen remote control. Designed and installed from £15,000. Gold: 90” projection screen with high-end quality Triad in-wall/ceiling 5.1 speaker system and award winning JVC 3D projector with a colour touch screen remote. Designed and installed from £20,000. It doesn’t end there. Sensory can also design a bespoke home cinema with a huge range of options, tailored to suit your requirements. For a free on site-survey and quotation, contact Sensory (details below). A full range of Sensory cinema technology is also on show at the Uber Interiors’ showroom - so come and play, enjoy and be inspired. Games room/Loft space The games room needn’t end with a snooker table and a bar. Sensory can install a motorized screen which drops down from the ceiling. A big screen TV, projector or multiple TVs will allow you to keep track of the latest sports events while you play.

uber-lifestyle.com // 0845 0773280

Media Room/Lounge If space is tight or you simply like your technology hidden away, Sensory offers media rooms with speakers disguised as artwork, projector screens which emerge from the ceiling or TVs hidden in walls. They can transform even the most formal spaces into high performance cinema rooms when required.

21

When did you last give some serious thought to the security of your home? uber-lifestyle.com // 0845 0773280

You are not alone. Most people start to think about protection only after the event. And the truth is, statistics say that an ‘event’ is now increasingly likely. Burglaries are rising, police resources are falling and a beautiful home makes a very attractive target.

Whether you have an existing system, or are considering security for the first time, Sensory Secure design highly sophisticated systems that are also unobtrusive and easy to use.

INTRUDER ALARMS The greatest worry for most of us is the thought of someone getting into our home, particularly at night. Sensory Secure offers a variety of technologies that provide you with a well designed and installed intruder alarm that is a part of your security strategy.

CCTV Once the preserve of offices and commercial premises, CCTV is now part of the front-line defence of a family home. It can be used as a visible deterrent, or carefully installed to be unobtrusive. If you already have CCTV, Sensory Secure can assess your current system and, if required, recommend suitable upgrades. Bespoke options can include external motion detectors and hidden underground sensors to detect a potential intruder at the earliest possible moment. These can be linked to your monitored CCTV system for increased security.

Monitoring

REFURBISHMENT AND MAINTENANCE

One step better than a basic alarm or CCTV is a monitored system. At any time, day or night, if your alarm or CCTV is activated, the relevant emergency services can be automatically alerted. Sensory Secure offer monitoring for your intruder CCTV system, in the form of single and dual path monitoring. These use a combination of communication paths such as phone lines, the mobile network and your broadband connection.

If your security system needs servicing or is in need of repair, don’t worry! Just give us a call. Sensory Secure are happy to assist you in any way we can. Our highly trained engineers have experience with many different makes and models of security equipment and can help with Intruder, CCTV and Access Control Systems. If a repair is not possible then Sensory Secure can advise and install a replacement system to meet your requirements, all at very competitive prices.

perimeter security

Should you be unhappy with your current installer or feel you are not getting the service you expect, Sensory Secure can take over any security system and provide you with the service you deserve. At Sensory Secure, we pride ourselves on our customer care and support and we want to work for you for many years to come.

Modern Infra-Red technology means that 24 hour surveillance is now possible and Biometric Access Control can ensure that only verified family members or staff gain entry to private areas. Sensory’s team truly understands how best to integrate the many new developments into a cohesive and structured integrated package without prescribing costly and unnecessary options.

For more information on Sensory Secure and a complimentary risk assessment, please call 01625 505720. www.sensorysecure.com

Door / gate entry A good start to any security system is a door or gate entry system. This will allow you to see and talk to visitors at your property entrance using audio and video handsets.

Grand Hotel Grand Design

Private label worldwide

A case study of how architecture and design can make a glittering jewel of the past dazzle once again. The Dolder Grand Hotel, Zurich.

We sometimes flatter ourselves that the passing of time must therefore mean ‘progress’. In the hotel business, like many, there’s a lot that can be learned from the way they used to do things. Wind your imagination back to the turn of 19th and 20th centuries. It was an age when service was enshrined in the best hotels. Where quality and excellence came as standard, serving an elite that would pay handsomely for top quality hospitality in sumptuous surroundings. It was to this clientèle that the Dolder Grand Hotel & Kurhaus, Zürich, opened its doors in 1899. The Basel architect Jacques Gros had been commissioned to design a grand hotel in the Swiss rustic style popular at the time. The hotel had 220 rooms and state of the art technology and facilities (for which read telephone, telegraph and bathrooms on every floor). The emphasis was on rest, relaxation, active leisure and the feeling of being close to nature. As often happens, the requirements of an evolving business started to chip away at its architectural purity. In the 1920s, the hotel switched from seasonal to all-year-round opening and with it came the first significant alterations. The main entrance was relocated from the front to the rear of the building. The site of the former main entrance was now

occupied by a semi-circular restaurant, the “Rotonde”. Then in the 1960s came a modern extension providing a further 60 rooms, at the expense of the symmetry of Jacques Gros’ original design. By the end of 1990s, it was clear that if the hotel was to face up to the stiff competition of other top flight international hotels, major investment was needed. In 2001, a new entrepreneur - Urs E. Schwarzenbach - took charge, bringing the finance and, as importantly, the drive to achieve the dream of restoring the hotel to its former glory.

The future wrapped around the past You have to say the hotel’s management started the project by going straight to the very top. The world-renowned architect Lord Foster, of Foster + Partners London, was invited to Zürich. Foster’s first action was to delve deep into the archives of the Dolder Grand. This led to a decision to restore the ethos, spirit and features of the hotel which had been eroded over the years.

Originally opened in 1899 and designed by Basel architect Jacques Gros but recently restored by Lord Foster, London.

Foster’s focus centred on restoring the main building and to return the façade to its original 1899 appearance. At the heart of the design was a reinstated main entrance on the south side of the complex so that guests – as in the past – would now be greeted by the hotel’s natural asset: the breathtaking and commanding views over Lake Zürich, the city and the Alps. A glazed garden floor extension was created to give the main restaurant similarly panoramic views. Meanwhile, all the add-on buildings which had gathered since the original 1899 construction were swept away and replaced with two new wings, the Spa Wing and the Golf Wing. These curve around the historic main building, ensuring that the hotel operates with the same number of rooms, and an expanded floor area. The result: a bold and inspirational fusion of the original imposing edifice, now remodelled and rejuvenated, with the very best of modern architecture. The old Dolder Grand Hotel closed for the works in summer 2004, making a triumphant re-opening in 2008. Continued >

25

High expectations Today, the re-invention of the Dolder Grand Hotel elevates its guests in every sense. Perched high up, the clear air and the beautiful scene unfolding before you is a feast for the eyes and the soul. Just like the very first guests in 1899 you approach the hotel on the south side of the main building. As you enter, you encounter the Stone Hall, the symmetrical centre of the building and a protected space that has been meticulously restored to its original splendour, (see previous page). From there, a passage branches off to the Reception, Lobby and Bar in the East Wing of the building. Straight ahead is the Ballroom and a curved walkway which links the three elements: the Golf Wing, Main Building and Spa wing. The Restaurant, for fine dining, is situated in the West Wing of the main building.

Dolder Grand Hotel

A staircase links the Stone Hall with the new lower Stone Hall in the basement. From here there is access to the Garden Restaurant, the Banqueting Rooms and the Garden Salons. The 173 rooms and suites are almost equally distributed over the three buildings. As befits this original Kurhaus (‘cure house’), the hotel offers a magnificent spa covering 4,000 square metres. European and Japanese influences have shaped this unique complex, created by the American spa designer Sylvia Sepielli. It comprises a pool with panoramic views, ladies’ and gentlemen’s spas, workout, movement and mind-body studios, as well as 19 treatment rooms and two spa suites for exclusive, private relaxation. The latest in technology even extends beneath the foundations. Some 150 metres below the surface there are 70 geothermal probes. This ground source heat recovery technology transfers heat to and from the earth, cooling the indoor environment in summer and heating it in

winter. It has achieved a 50% reduction in the hotel’s energy consumption – despite needing to serve double the original floor space. The hotel, which was also used recently as a filming location for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, is a coming-together of ages, concepts and thinking. A glorious past, reignited for a fabulous future. For more details about the Dolder Grand project, please visit the Lord Foster’s case study at www.fosterandpartners.com

We present the best work you’ll never see

uber-lifestyle.com // 0845 0773280

Beautiful design is not just about beautiful design. It’s about creating a scheme that works as well as dazzles. That’s why The Design Practice at UBER works with SEMA. Their work is an art in itself: they create the invisible network beneath the surface that supplies and serves everything from plumbing and lighting to air conditioning and data cabling. SEMA’s skill lies in serving the design without compromising the function, whether that’s in a bathroom or drawing room; a home office or media room; or a fully equipped home gym or spa. SEMA also makes the impossible, possible. With their combination of lateral thinking and technical mastery, extraordinary design is more than skin deep.

29

Behind the beauty: brains More of an art installation than a piece of lighting, this magnificent Terzani Atlantis metal and glass chandelier does come with certain requirements. It is weaved by master artisans using more than 3km of metal chain. The result is something like an airborne piece of sculpture: substantial, heavy, and needing expert and secure installation. Enter SEMA. The objective here was to hang the chandelier in the centre of the house, suspended from the second floor. From the

uber-lifestyle.com // 0845 0773280

outset of the project SEMA worked with the building contractors to ensure that sufficient load-bearing infrastructure was safely, and discreetly, in place. Not only that, the chandelier required a motorised unit to lower it for maintenance, which meant that both the motor and wiring needed an invisible home as well. SEMA works with new and existing properties, with the utmost care and indeed vision: they can futureproof a property to make sure that future additions, upgrades - or a designer’s inspiration - can be seamlessly addressed.

UBER seeks out the best in design - Alila Villas - Bali

Luxury and design

A report from the cliff face Uber reports on an architectural masterpiece: Alila Villas Uluwatu in Bali

In the finer hotels around the world, exciting things are happening: in service, in food, in facilities. But in our experience what marks out the great from the merely good is an acute understanding of how architecture and design can take the guests’ experience to new heights. Which brings us to an exciting discovery in Bali. (If you were ever looking for an excuse to packs your bags and go, now you have one..) It is called Alila Villas Uluwatu. A relative newcomer, it has already joined the 2012 Gold List of the influential Condé Nast Traveller. Their critic said simply: “For me, Alila Villas Uluwatu is the most successful integration

of contemporary resort design in tropical Asia. It has only been open two years, but I think it’s an instant classic - an architectural masterpiece.’ Perched on an elevated plateau above limestone cliffs which sweep down to the sea, the hotel has alfresco living at its heart. There are 84 spacious, open-plan villas, all with private saltwater pools, sun terraces and ocean-view cabanas. A personal butler can take care of your every whim. And whether experiencing fine dining, or traditional warungstyle cuisine, or simply sipping something cool while drinking in the commanding vista from the clifftop pool and bar, this experience has been, in every sense, designed to delight.

33

Indulgence and conscience in perfect harmony Alila Villas Uluwatu has been designed by Singapore architectural firm, WOHA. This awardwinning practice has carved out an international reputation for creating extraordinary design in Asian tropical surroundings. Blending in with the surrounding natural environment, the interiors are wholly integrated with the architecture, as the design flows seamlessly inside and out. All the materials are locally sourced, environmentally sound and support local communities. A green ethic runs throughout: rooms have ceilings of local bamboo; hardwood is recycled from old railway carriages; flat roofs are insulated with local volcanic rock; and water from washing machines and baths is filtered for the gardens. WOHA director Richard Hassell comments: “We are very pleased that Alila Hotels have embraced the principles of Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD). The resort is registered for EarthCheck certification, and will be the first hotel in Bali to get the highest level of certification for ESD. 5-star living and sustainability seldom go hand in hand. Yet at this design masterpiece, indulgence and a clear conscience are very definitely an item.

Navigating the Straits

Estate Two Private Infinity Pool

The yearning to escape to an island is a dream that floats in the recesses of most of our minds. And when that island turns out to be privatelyowned, and a temple to beauty, serenity, gastronomy and boundless luxury...this is the point when most of us wake up and realise it’s time to go to work. But stay with that dream, because we’ve found its location. It begins on Pangkor Laut, an island nestling off the west coast of Malaysia. Tucked away in a small cove, and accessible only by private vehicle, Pangkor Laut has borrowed a little space from the two million year-old rainforest there to create eight very special residences (‘Estates’). Four of them rest on the beautiful waterfront of Marina Bay, allowing visitors another fantasy: their own private beach, which is manicured every day with the zeal of a greenkeeper at Augusta. The remaining Estates blend organically into the jungle of the hillside, with commanding vistas of the ocean. The inspiration for the Estates is rooted in the centuries-old reverence for escape and contemplation. Crafted to reflect traditional southeast Asian architecture, each comprises a series of pavilions: for sleeping, dining, living and bathing. An outside bath, cocooned in privacy, feels like your own personal spa. Your infinity pool beckons as the sun works its magic. Polished tropical hardwood

floors are accented by textured fabrics that add warmth to the elegant bedrooms with their podium beds. Bathrooms and vanity areas are wonderfully spacious, and crafted with fine attention to detail. This time-honoured concept is then overlaid with the very best of 21st century technology and comfort, artfully and seamlessly applied. The dream gets even better, too. Your Estate has a personal butler and cook to attend to your every desire. Meals, tea, snacks, off the wall whims consider them taken care of. Indeed, with almost psychic intuition, your staff seem to know that you’re about to feel thirsty or peckish, as an icecold fruit cocktail and chilled slices of watermelon descend into your gaze on a tray. Your chef is there to delight and inspire you, and indeed to take orders for any preference - be it Asian, or European/western. As the candlelight dances in the glass walls of your dining pavilion, and with the soundtrack of waves lapping the sleepy shore, your wish really is their command. And from caring for your wardrobe to attending to myriad housekeeping details, you’ll be waited on, quite literally, hand and foot. A word of warning: you’ll get used to this with almost worrying speed. Roll with it. Resistance is futile.

Setting a Course

for Heaven Leg Two: a luxurious ocean-going yacht, from Pangkor Laut to Phuket.

Once you’ve found heaven on earth in Pangkor Laut it is no easy task to leave it. But there are more riches to explore, and as the sun begins to set, the distant rumble of marine engines beckons you down to the shoreline. Awaiting you is your hotel’s own 85ft motor yacht. This magnificent craft sleeps six guests in complete luxury, with en suite bathrooms accompanying each of the sumptuous quarters. Indeed, this is a magnificent hotel on water, with all the intuitive and gracious service you enjoyed on land now on hand as you are whisked out to sea.

The Gent magazine // Pangkor Laut The Beach - Ko Phi Phi

Langkawi

Ko Phi Phi island becomes your own after 3pm when all the tourists boats set off for Thailand.

Langkawi Your first destination: the island of Langkawi which lies off the coast of Malaysia. The balmy night air rustles through your hair as you sit back on the fly deck, champagne glass in hand. The night is illuminated by the occasional lanterns that announce the local fishing boats. A restful note on which to retire. As dawn breaks, and with the delicious aroma of breakfast rising from the galley, your destination heaves into view: the idyllic island of Langkawi. Aboard your own craft you are treated to a private insider’s trip around the island, with an expert on board to unfold its ancient stories. You can explore the mangroves, a bat cave, the local fishing villages and the majestic sight of eagles swooping down onto the water, talons at the ready. Then step ashore where you can plant a mangrove tree of your own and contribute to the island’s ecology. And then while away an hour or two cycling around the villages; enjoying the covered terraces and bustling hub of Eagle Square; and a beautiful lunch overlooking the ocean at Danna Hotel. All this relaxing is exhausting, so after lunch it’s time to repair to the yacht for a glass, a good book and a snooze on the fly deck. As the sun goes down, the tempo picks up in the harbour as bars and restaurants come to life for the evening’s

hospitality. Meanwhile on board, there’s the small matter of sublime dinner to attend to (well, the enjoying part in your case), created by your chef to your instructions and beautifully served by the crew. It has been an extraordinary day, and with your head still dazed by sights, sounds, tastes and fragrances, it’s time to slip anchor. You’re bound for Thailand. Koh Rok Nok: uninhabited, unrivalled Two hours under an azure sky, zipping along the crystal waters. It’s a sure recipe for a tan, and for a liberated, exhilarated feeling as your yacht points towards an out of the way haven: an uninhabited island, indeed, called Koh Rok Nok. Here, the residents are wildlife of all kinds, thriving in this designated nature reserve. As the anchor slashes down it’s the perfect opportunity for you too to take a dip in the glacial waters. There is nothing quite like the feeling of bobbing up and down as the waves lap the side of your yacht, while your personal chef sets up lunch on the beach. Later, you might like to try a spot of sea fishing and bear your catch in triumph to the on-board barbecue. And then enjoy dinner as the ‘real’ local fishing fleet puts to sea for their nightly excursion.

Straight out of the movies: Ko Phi Phi If after dinner you’d like a little preview of your next destination, slot The Beach into your cabin’s DVD. It was shot at Ko Phi Phi, a group of six islands that are part of the Hadnopparattara-Ko Phi Phi National Park. The yacht takes you to an abundance of corals and marine life, as well as those perfect white beaches which only seem to exist in movies. But here, they’re real, as the sand in between your toes will soon testify. And so on to the final port of call of this extraordinary maritime adventure: Phuket. Once more, it’s time for a fond farewell, not just to the grace and elegance of this most exquisite of yachts, but also to your crew: the captain, your personal chef and the crew. They have enriched your adventure beyond measure, serving every whim, inspiring your taste buds and sharing their knowledge and experiences. You will part firm friends. NINE //

sky-dweller

A new altitude of beauty The Pagani Huayra: the force of a plane, tamed for the road. It is the way with legendary brands: they somehow find ways to improve upon perfection. Rolex stands with the very finest, able to find new concepts to surprise and delight us, not with superficial gimmicky but through craftsmanship, precision and elegance. The Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller, new in 2012, has been created with global travellers in mind. Indeed it is the first Rolex to offer two time zones and an annual calendar, discreetly marking the passage of the months. With 14 patents – five of which are new – the Sky-Dweller provides, in an unprecedented and highly original way, the information global travellers need. Local time is offered via centre-hands, and a reference time display in 24-hour format is read via a rotating offcentre disc visible on the dial. In addition, the innovative annual calendar (named SAROS after the astronomical phenomenon which inspired it) requires only one date adjustment a year, when the month changes from February to March. The month is displayed by means of 12 discreet apertures around the circumference of the dial.

For the traveller who has everything: something he hasn’t. Yet.

FOURTEEN //

Inside, the Sky-Dweller ticks to a new calibre: the ‘9001’ chronometer, officially Swiss-certified and entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Available in 18 ct. white, yellow or Everose gold cast by Rolex in its own foundry, this advanced wristwatch features the fluted bezel that is a signature of the brand. With the Sky-Dweller, Rolex has once again achieved the impossible: it has scaled new heights, designing and making a wrist watch that builds still further on the legend of the Rolex Oyster.

Horacio Pagani. Argentinian, brilliant, inspirational. The designer’s designer. The visionary whose Zonda R was Clarkson’s Car of the Year and which caused him to exclaim: “I have never, ever driven anything quite like this. Never.” From this illustrious stable there are now the rumblings of something even more exciting: The Huayra. It has been some years in the making. The concept was originally born in 2003, in those heady days before anyone had heard of the phrase ‘credit crunch’. It was a good time to

be in the supercar business: customers were plentiful, and the commitment of the big manufacturers led to the birth of fabulous cars such as the Bugatti Veyron, Porsche Carrera GT, Ferrari Enzo and the Mercedes McLaren SLR. Against this backdrop, Pagani debated the future of the Zonda, an original design from the early 1990s. He decided to conceive a car totally different in form, dimension, dynamics and technology, without ever losing the essence of his signature approach. As he says: “Leonardo da Vinci taught us that art and science are disciplines that need to walk side by side.”

seventeen //

The Gent magazine // Pagani huayra

Enter the Huayra Hundreds of drawings, 8 scale models, 2 full-scale models and five years’ gestation. The result of this long and painstaking birth can now be unveiled: the Huayra. Pagani has created a car that’s even more spacious than the Zonda, with a silhouette that is “soft, easy to read and which forms from lean and sleek lines that have a clear beginning and end”.

flaps are activated according to the study of results gathered from aerodynamic testing. The whole car is shaped as a wing, which is why it has a high front in order to reduce the length of the upper part of this wing to counteract lift.

Pagani is fascinated by the element of air in all its forms: how it translates into a jet turbine; and the graceful silent power of the glider; and the violence and force that air can unleash.

Find me a runway The Huayra is powered by a specially created Mercedes-AMG engine. This lightweight unit is nevertheless a twin turbo with over 700 HP and 1100 Nm of torque. Pagani describes it as delivering “the brute force of an airplane taking off”. Yet it is also designed to return peak efficiency in terms of CO2 and consumption.

The Huayra is the coming together of more than 4000 components (engine and gearbox not included). At its heart is ‘active aerodynamics’:

The active suspension in the front and the car’s four flaps produce an optimal balance of drag coefficient and downforce.

Pirelli has also created a leading edge tyre, gluing the car to the road and with low rolling friction. The specialist supercar dealer William Loughran reports The Huayra will come with a price tag in the region of £850,000.

Not so unlucky:

Meridian’s 13th store opens in Manchester. At last, it was Manchester’s turn. Following on from their exclusive boutiques in cities including Mexico City, Singapore, Kuwait City, Bangkok and Santiago, Manchester became Meridian’s second store in Europe. On 5 July, over 60 guests attended the exclusive launch event on London Road, Alderley Edge, and walked into a world of audio/automotive heaven. Meridian’s portfolio includes marques such as Jaguar Land Rover and McLaren, and having designed the surround sound system for the Jaguar XJ Ultimate, it was only natural to showcase the car on the night. Meridian Manchester director Vincent Bentham commented: “Anyone who appreciates the exquisite design, architecture and performance of the Jaguar XJ could not fail to be impressed by the Meridian product range we have in the boutique.”

Guests were also able to enjoy the new McLaren 12C high performance sports car, for which Meridian Audio developed two custom designed in-car audio systems.

The Lecson System is on permanent display in both the New York Museum of Modern Art and the V & A in London, alongside other iconic brands such as Alexander McQueen and Concorde.

Will Sherwin from Wilmslow was one of many who was excited to see the products and cars in person: “Having been down to the boutique and seen them in action is something different. I was especially impressed with the home cinema demonstration. I had never seen or heard anything like it before.”

The showroom’s location has been carefully chosen. Vincent Bentham said: “Before the launch we were confident that Alderley Edge was the right location for a luxury brand like Meridian, but having seen the response I am now certain that Meridian Manchester will become the jewel in the crown of Meridian Audio. ”

Among the systems on display was the 40th Anniversary Limited Edition System. Of the 40 systems ever created, only three remain on display globally, with one taking pride of place in the boutique.

Vincent continued: “It is an honour to have some of the most innovative products over the past 40 years showcased in the Meridian Manchester boutique. Come and experience these products first-hand - it’s the only way you can truly appreciate them.”

Another iconic product generating a surge of interest was the Meridian Lecson System, which won the British Design Council Award in 1974. Created by co-founders Allen Boothroyd and Bob Stuart, word has it there are only 40 still in existence, fetching significant sums at auction.

A beautiful investment? He sold his first work for £27 at the age of 12. He has exhibited at some of the top galleries in the world but now artist Stuart McAlpine Miller has been catapulted into the big league. Finally realizing the true extent of his creative endeavours, the Scottish artist has recently achieved huge success with his illusion-based figurative works. Chosen last year from more than 1,000 applicants, Miller has taken up the prestigious position as artist-in-residence at The Savoy. The artist will produce eight artworks inspired by celebrities who have stayed at the famous London hotel. Marilyn Monroe, Laurence Olivier, Noel Coward and Elizabeth Taylor were among countless legendary guests who stayed in its sumptuous suites. The portraits are set to take pride of place in the property’s central atrium at the end of September 2012 - and prices for Miller’s work are expected to rocket. From that first £27 sale his work is now priced at upwards of £30,000 and is poised to increase. Estelle Lovatt, art critic for BBC Radio 2’s Art Show, said:

Of the most outstanding beauty in the art world today, his is the new art to be collected for investment and aesthetics for tomorrow. No-one else paints like him. His striking works, which layer images of supermodel-esque women over brightly coloured cartoons is a commentary on the superficiality of fame. They’re winning him a following in Britain and Hong Kong and a clutch of celebrity admirers including Sir Paul McCartney. The images appear to be photographs but closer inspection reveals them to be painted in oils. According to Miller’s dealer, prices for the works have tripled over the past year. The Savoy has seen its fair share of famous artists. Monet painted the view of Waterloo and Westminster bridges from his room at the hotel, and Whistler etched its scaffolding. // twenty four

Selecting an artist to follow in these footsteps and to create new artworks was no easy task. We look forward to seeing McAlpine Miller’s take on The Savoy and unveiling a new collection of works which we believe will delight guests and enhance the beautifully restored interiors of this iconic hotel Kiaran MacDonald, Managing Director of The Savoy

In the view of our Barrister at Lincoln’s Inn, there is no legal reason to pay Stamp Duty. Surely everyone has to pay stamp duty on a house purchase? Actually, no. With expert tax planning from CDP, you can access entirely legal tax relief that means zero Stamp Duty Land Tax. On a £750,000 property, that’s £30,000 in avoidable tax alone.

PROTECTING THE WEALTH YOU HOPE TO PASS ON It is the most natural desire in the world: to want to pass on your hard-earned assets to your family. But long before that’s a possibility, various tax, local authority and legal people will be eyeing up your estate. Even if you don’t think of yourself as ‘rich’, your family may lose thousands of pounds, if: •Y our total worth - including your home – is more than £325,000. Every penny you leave above that amount may be taxed at 40%. •Y our total worth - again including your home - is more than £23,250. If so, you may have to foot the entire bill for any long-term care you may need. •Y ou only make a conventional Will. Even leaving modest amounts of money can cost around £15,000 per person in probate costs.

Happily, there is a solution that is simple, flexible and legal. It’s called a Family Trust. It acts like a safe deposit box for your assets. Once inside the trust, your assets are protected against tax, care fees and other costs and fees that threaten the value of your estate.

About Fiducia Fiducia is an innovative and qualified specialist focusing on estate planning and wealth preservation. At Fiducia, we’re delighted to offer an exploratory chat, without charge or obligation.

Real solutions for real people We have recently established Family Trusts for Mr and Mrs James in Cheshire. They have an estate totalling £630,000: the family home is worth £330,000 and they have savings and investments of about £150,000 each. Their main concern is to ensure that their hard-earned wealth passes down to their children, grandchildren and beyond as simply and as quickly as possible. They each set up a Family Trust and transferred their half shares of the house inside. They also both moved £140,000 of their savings into the Trusts’ protection, keeping back £10,000 each for short-term needs.

The benefits to Mr and Mrs James are: •A voiding the cost, delay and stress of probate (twice) • Protecting their beneficiaries’ estates from the effects of Inheritance Tax, divorce or bankruptcy •P rotecting their wealth from any future relationship •P rotecting their wealth from possible future creditors, including Local Authority long-term care fees • Creating a family wealth protection tool that can be used for up to 125 years.

Bentley

sweeps along new terrain twenty eight //

Whatever image comes to mind when you think of Bentley, think again.

Pre-conceptions can be a dangerous things. They are the enemy of invention, of surprise, and of bold, left-field ideas that can lead to extraordinary results. And so is it with the Bentley EXP 9 F. This is a concept car for which their designers shed all pre-conceived ideas of what a Bentley is - in favour of what a Bentley could be. The result: an SUV (yes, a Bentley SUV…) powered by a 6.0 litre, twin turbocharged W12 engine with 8 speed transmission. From the very beginning, the design team had a clear vision for a new Bentley SUV. Dirk van Braeckel, Director of Design, explains: “EXP 9 F had to represent the absolute pinnacle of the sport utility sector, setting a new benchmark for this type of vehicle. The style had to reflect Bentley’s sporting character despite its radically different package and purpose together with sculptured, flowing surfaces in keeping with the Bentley tradition.” The extraordinary result was unveiled at the Geneva International Salon d’Auto earlier this year. Entering this new class of vehicle allowed the styling team to adopt a more progressive design approach. The exterior is a bold, dynamic statement, combining clean, muscular surfaces with

signature character lines, while retaining the qualities of luxury and power. So although this is the marque presented in a very different guise, the result is still reassuringly, and unmistakably, a Bentley. Essential Bentley design elements such as the matrix grille, round lamps and the strong power-line and haunch along each flank are all reinterpreted for EXP 9 F. The ‘hewn from solid’ design language and innovative detailing, emphasise the robust character of this high-luxury SUV. The designers were also inspired by the ‘visible engineering’ of the famous Blower Bentleys. For example, the day-time running lamp apertures also act as the charge cooler air intakes for the twin-turbo W12 engine, each with a dramatic, meshcovered turbine fan design and ‘rifled’ inner surface finish. So where does this take Bentley in the future? The word is, the EXP 9 F could herald a third Bentley model-line alongside the bespoke Mulsanne and the high performance Continental GT, GTC and Flying Spur. Let’s hope so. This is a concept that could grace the opera, the motorway or your nearest sand dune.

Oceans of luxury

40 Metre Yacht

For the ultimate in luxury on water, navigate your way to a Sunseeker There are a few select brands that, in a single word, conjure instantly a world of glamour, excitement, craftsmanship and luxury. Sunseeker is one. And while it inhabits a world of exclusive marinas and Hollywood A-listers, this is also the choice of the serious seafarer to explore oceans, continents and islands - admittedly, in some considerable style.

The Sunseeker brand is a major British success story. Established 50 years ago in Poole, Dorset, the company today employs nearly 2,500 people and markets to virtually every country in the world. Today, its range starts at around £325,000 and rises in sumptuous increments to £16 million. However, in 2014 that will reach £23 million as Sunseeker makes history by producing the 155 Yacht - the largest and most expensive production motor yacht built in the UK. Perhaps it’s not surprising that Sunseeker has received the supreme accolade for its state of the art technology, excitement and sheer

desirability: its yachts have twice been selected to appear in James Bond movies: “Quantum of Solace” and “Casino Royal”. Step aboard The Sunseeker range runs from 40 feet to 40 metres. At the entry level, The Portofino 40 is a brand new two-cabin, four+one berth, family or friends boat with central saloon, galley and twin access head and shower room. Like every Sunseeker, she is a true sports cruiser, with a top speed of up to 34 knots. The Sunseeker 40 Metre Yacht gives you the freedom to cruise the world; it has an unrestricted navigation classification.

what to look out for: • A perfect introduction to Sunseeker is via a charter. The company has 50 customer yachts at locations throughout the world, including the South of France, the Italian Coast, the Caribbean and Thailand. Palatial in scale, she offers ultra-spacious accommodation for up to 12 guests with clever layouts that allow your crew of nine to move discreetly about the boat. There is an extraordinarily wide choice of cabin configurations, and options include new automated balconies to the forward master suite and main deck. Commissioning your boat Because every Sunseeker is hand-built to order, the company produces fewer than 200 boats a year. Quality, and not quantity, is the ethos here. Unlike many, the company also positively encourages you to be involved during the build process. Indeed many customers visit their yacht four or five times as their dream craft becomes stunning reality.

If you would like to know more, visit the Sunseeker website for an introduction to this extraordinary range. They also exhibit every year at all the major international boat shows including Southampton, Barcelona, Monaco and Cannes (September), and London and Düsseldorf (January). Our offices here in Poole are open 7 days a week where we have a display of new and used Sunseeker boats for you to view. The Gent magazine // cloudside shooting

On Cloud Nine at Cloudside One of the UK’s best and most beautifully located shooting clubs lies right here in the North West.

From our earliest experiences in a playground or fairground, there’s something about the challenge hitting something precisely. Perhaps it dates back to hunter-gatherer stuff, or just a determination to beat the odds. Whatever it is, clay pigeon shooting is now the fastest-growing sport in the UK. In fact it’s estimated that 250,000 people, ranging from early novices to seasoned shots, take part in this sport regularly. Once you’ve tried it, it isn’t hard to see why: it is utterly addictive. There is nothing quite like the feeling of standing ready, shotgun loaded, yelling “Pull!” to release a clay from the trap - and then, in a split second of calm and calculation, lining up your sights just ahead of the speeding clay so that your shot blows the target into satisfying smithereens.

thirty four //

At Cloudside, it gets even better. One of the finest clubs in the country, Cloudside combines breathtaking vistas of the Cheshire countryside with an ambience that has been created by shooters, for shooters. And whether you’re a complete beginner or an Olympic marksman, you receive a warm welcome and all the guidance and top-class facilities you need.

Indeed, Cloudside is a school as well as a club, and such is its level of safety and professionalism it’s the ideal place for first timers; it’s perfect for curious beginners, birthday celebrations and corporate awaydays (both Manchester football teams have each bonded over a 12-bore here.) If you’re competitive (and who isn’t?) the club offers a range of packages, including a competition day shoot with a prize-giving presentation and gourmet catering. Or you can try your hand at an archery or air rifle shooting day, including expert safety instruction for all. For the more advanced, Cloudside offers championship-standard layouts for the clay disciplines of Skeet, Down the Line, Automatic Ball Trap and Olympic Trench. Of course, shooting is also a convivial sport, and Cloudside has captured this perfectly with a sumptuous clubhouse adorned with shooting memorabilia, leather Chesterfield sofas and an excellent restaurant. So if you’ve ever been tempted to try your hand at shooting, and don’t want to harm anything other than a speeding clay, this magnificent club is right on your doorstep.

Shooting for style

Shooting has its own unmistakable fashion - a style that combines beautiful design with the agile practicality that shooters need for their sport, in all weathers. At Cloudside, we’re proud to offer our own collection of breeks, jackets, gilets, shirts, skirts and boots. It’s called Cloudside Tweed and we have just unveiled a brand new range for Winter 2012. The Male Grooming Zone at The Radisson Blu, Manchester Amazing really, but it wasn’t that long ago that it was considered too ‘feminine’ for men to wear deodorant. Thankfully those days are long gone, and today’s man knows that looking good is down to many things, ranging from hair and clothes to the basics of a regimen that looks after muscles, skin and a general sense of feeling good. Here are just some of the ways you can emerge from the Zone feeling like a new man: The Guinot Hydradermie Lift Facial. This removes impurities and toxins, and gives remarkable - and immediate - results.

Drainage: expertly applied by a beauty therapist, draining electrodes visibly release tension and improve microcirculation in the skin. Muscle Stimulation: a workout for your facial muscles that boosts firmness and tone and smooths out facial features. The treatment concludes with a facial massage to nourish, regenerate, firm and tone the skin. Universal Contour Wrap (Amazing results): The original sea clay body wrap treatment. A unique blend of mineral rich clay and specialist body wrapping techniques help cleanse and detoxify your body while actively compressing the soft fatty tissues, to create instant and lasting inch loss. Once the warm, clay soaked bandages are applied you can lie back and relax for an hour while the treatment goes to work (or maybe treat yourself to a relaxing Guinot facial, manicure or pedicure). The Gent magazine // Spotlight on Jessica Ennis

Transform into a complete athlete and boost your running

thirty eight //

The magnificence of Jess Ennis’s achievement is still, weeks after the event, sinking in. She delivered something that the nation craved: a Gold in the Heptathlon. Not only that, she did it in style, making her victory look effortless and routine. Of course, training is everything. So if you’ve been inspired by her achievements, delve a little deeper into her regime, with the thoughts of her coach Tony Minichiello.

Pick up training tips from Jessica Ennis’ Coach: Tony Minichiello Article taken from Runner’s World

> 1. Speed

The Session: 4 x 40m sprints (with 3 mins recovery), then 4 x 300m sprints (with 6 mins recovery). Tony Minichiello says: “Speed training in heptathlon is crucial as there’s an element of it in every event - just as there is in every race distance for running, whether you’re doing a 5K or a marathon. Jess does very short speed reps and then ‘over reps’, where she runs further than the race distance. The short reps with long recoveries prime your body for quick bursts of intensive energy. The over reps are performed in order to give the athlete confidence that they can run quickly beyond the required distance, so you know you’re not going to slow down towards the end of a race.”

> 2. Speed Endurance The Session: 3 x 200m sprints (with 30 secs recovery)

Tony says: “Jess needs speed endurance for the 800m. Doing shorter distances with shorter recoveries means your body gets used to working hard when it’s not fully comfortable. Do three sets of three sprints, with five minutes’ rest between each set.”

> 3. Explosive Power

The Session: Plyometric box jumps 1/ Jump explosively on to a knee-high box, your heels coming up to your bum. Land on the balls of your feet. 2/ Jump off, powering into the air and landing with straight legs. Do three sets of 15 with twominute recoveries.

Tony says: “The act of running is explosive,” “You need to develop your muscles to push you along and power upturns in pace. Jess works on explosive power to come out of the blocks quickly in her spring and hurdle events, but it’s a good element to add to any training programme.”

> 4. Core Strength

The Session: Foot-tap and arm-tap planks 1/ Get into a plank position with your back straight, bum in line with the rest of your body and hands beneath your shoulders. 2/ Lift your left arm 30cm to the left, tap it down, then return to the start position. Do 10 reps, then repeat with your right arm. That’s one set. Do three sets of 20 with 60 seconds’ rest in between. Repeat the action with your right leg, then your left leg. Tony says: “You should be running tall, with your torso solid and strong so you don’t lose energy controlling a weak mid section. This is what core strength is for. Jess needs it for the throwing events, but it also benefits her running.”

> 6. Planning

Minichiello offers a quickfire masterclass in the art of effective training planning: 1/ “Make training non-negotiable, like eating. Get into the mindset that this is just something you have to do. For example, would you go to work without having brushed your teeth? Well, don’t go to bed without having trained.” 2/ “Curb your enthusiasm: variety and hard work are great, but don’t overdo it. The cardinal rule I have with Jess is that if something new goes in, something old comes out. Don’t add to your workload without taking something out to compensate or you’ll get injured.” 3/ “Be flexible: don’t follow a training plan slavishly if it doesn’t fit in with your life, or you’ll start cutting corners. Does what you’re being asked to do work with your other commitments? If there are clashes, make tweaks. Split a long run into two shorter ones - say pre- and post-work. Life can get in the way, so keep alternative sessions in mind. Something is better than nothing.”

> 5. Upper Body Strength > 7. Motivation The Session: Medicine ball throws 1/ Stand with a one-kilogram medicine ball in your right hand, an appropriate throwing distance from a wall. Step forward with your left foot and bring the ball behind you as far as you can. 2/ Now thrust the ball forward, keeping your core engaged and your torso forwards. Five throws with each hand is one set. Do three sets of 10 with two minutes’ recovery.

Tony says: “It all comes down to one word: variety. Jess is ready to work hard every day because she enjoys it. And she enjoys it because she’s challenged and her training evolves. Once you’re on top of a particular session, think, ‘What can I do to change this? Mixing things up will keep you focused.” The training tips are for general guidance only.

Tony says: “For runners, it’s important to strengthen the shoulders and arms to improve the efficiency of your arm swing, which in turn leads to easier, faster running.”

When a belly isn’t a laugh A beer belly or large waist could mean you’re a higher-risk candidate for serious diseases. Our bodies have a way of revealing how we’re living. Red eyes can mean we’ve been working or playing hard. Poor skin can announce we’re not eating properly. And when it comes to a beer belly, it’s a bobbling, wobbling witness to our lifestyle, choices and diet. Beer is a culprit because it’s high in calories (there can be 400 calories in a pint) and because alcohol reduces the body’s ability to burn body fat. Then consider all the ‘bad’ foods we love and the fact that ageing makes it harder maintain muscle - and most of us become candidates for a beer belly to some degree. But apart from being a bit unsightly, is it actually a problem? The evidence says yes. Too much fat around your waist puts you at a higher risk of developing type-2 diabetes and high blood pressure. And both of these can lead to heart disease and stroke. The NHS advice is clear: women should have a maximum waistline of 31.5”, and men between 35-37”. Any more, and it’s time to take action.

Everyone can do it So where do you start? Starve yourself? Go on a boot camp regime and do a thousand sit-ups an hour? The reality is very different - and surprising. Greg from Cheshire Fitness tells us: “It’s about two key things: getting your diet right, and using the right kind of exercise to shift that belly and build muscle.” Getting the fuel right The first question is what you’re putting into your body. You need to eat regular meals and never skip breakfast. Base your diet on proteins (meat, cheese, fish, eggs…) and fill-up on fresh vegetables. Most importantly, cut down on carbohydrates (bread, potatoes, pasta) and have absolutely no simple sugars. Most fat in the body is due to the conversion of excess sugar. The right fitness training Greg says: “At Cheshire Fitness we show you how you need to ‘melt’ that excess fat away through a progressive resistance programme. This forces the muscles to build and grow.”

This increase in muscle mass turbo-charges your metabolism and turns you back into a fatburner, revealing the lean muscle-tone that’s been hiding. To get even better results, Cheshire Fitness recommends a regime that also includes interval training and a tailored nutrition plan. 100% dedication. Ready? In a world full of crash diets and so-called miracles, Cheshire Fitness may not be for everyone. Why? Because although they offer a wealth of expertise, they’re in the results business and that demands that their clients are also absolutely committed to succeed. To see if you’re suitable, they offer an initial complimentary assessment, and on-going support which includes: • A full lifestyle analysis • Ongoing body assessment • A personalised training and nutrition plan • Personal training sessions to keep you motivated and on track • Results that come with a double-your-money back guarantee If you feel ready to take on the challenge then call Cheshire Fitness on 0800 994 9945 or visit www.cheshirefitness.co.uk.

The must that is

Mustique The Gent discovers Greystone Cottage, a piece of heaven on the private island of Mustique There are some places on earth that are so special, their secret must be jealously guarded. The island of Mustique is just such a place. One of the unspoilt Grenadine Islands, Mustique covers just 1400 acres and around 500 (very lucky) people live there. Over the years, it has cast its spell on everyone from royalty and dignitaries and to Hollywood A-listers. And unlike many of the world’s most glamorous destinations, Mustique has a very dependable safeguard: the island is privately owned and protected by the owners themselves. Naturally they want to preserve it as the ultimate place to live and this guarantees its status as an unrivalled place to visit. With its exclusive collection of private residences available for weekly rental, luxury villa living is the ultimate essence of Mustique.

Mustique’s mini-castle With its castellations, nobbly stones and quaint, almost Beatrix Potter windows, Greystone Cottage is like a little piece of England but in an altogether more exotic setting. Created by one of the island’s foremost architects, its beautiful design is complemented by a quite magnificent location. Greystone Cottage sits directly above Britannia Bay with panoramic views of the Caribbean. Below, the fishing village bobs and ripples with boats, yachts laze at their moorings, boutiques ply a gentle trade and Basil’s Bar beckons you towards a sunset cocktail.

Exquisite living, inside and out The cottage is resplendent after a full refurbishment and upgrade, completed just last year. A distinctly Caribbean feel is punctuated with contemporary pulses of turquoise, white and lilac. Of course, the interior makes the most of the fabulous exterior: a spacious living room and open plan kitchen leads out onto an extensive veranda with squashy sofas that lure you into indolence. There are also small seating areas for a quiet glass and a good book, together with a separate dining area, the scene of many a full-on feast. Outside also hosts a spacious pool deck, bathed in the Caribbean’s rays, complete with loungers and a poolside gazebo for al fresco breakfasts and lunches. The poolside barbeque is a special feature, waiting to be fired up for the best in Caribbean cuisine. Amidst its newly landscaped gardens every aspect is geared towards enjoying the panoramic views of Britannia Bay. Indeed, a perfect setting for sunset cocktails is the rooftop veranda, or the secret patio with views of the bay. For families who need entertaining, a special open-air room features a full size pool table and games such as backgammon, chess and cards.

The Gent magazine // Martin-Bird Wines

The Cheshire Wine Club Uncorking discoveries If you agree - and who doesn’t? - with Robert Louis Stevenson that “good wine is bottled poetry”, we invite you to enjoy a sonnet or two in liquid form.

The Cheshire Wine Club has been created with a mission in mind: to discover and share the joy of beautiful wines, many unearthed far from the beaten track. This includes small, niche vineyards who prefer quality to quantity, and whose small production often escapes the notice or interest of the major retailers. The Club was formed by Matthew Martin-Bird, who has travelled the world’s major wine producing regions in search of wines that inspire and surprise. He tells us: “I also look for wines which don’t just please with the first sip, but continue to delight through the course of an evening.” Matthew holds a Diploma in Wines and Spirits, as well as an MBA in Wine Business Management; this serves the Club well as he searches out wines that offer excellent value for money.

Complimentary membership Membership of the Cheshire Wine Club requires just one thing: a love of delicious wine. There are no membership fees or commitments to buy, and we will keep you updated with newsletters and exclusive special offers. But of course the hero is the wine itself, and the Club offers occasional mixed cases, selected from our searches. This is a splendid way to navigate your way to new discoveries, at an affordable price.

The Club’s Inaugural Case. The Cheshire Wine Club’s first offering is an eclectic mix with summer firmly in mind. It combines some classics from the old world and modern classics from the new, in the form of some excellent fizz; light, sprightly whites; fresh and fruity rosés and elegant reds. Your case comprises two bottles of six different wines, as follows: Quartz Reef Methode Traditionelle NV. This is an exceptional sparkling wine from one of New Zealand’s most talented winemakers, Rudi Bauer. As the name suggests, this is made in the traditional Champagne method and is simply the best NV sparkler to be found in New Zealand. 1

2 Gavi di Gavi from Tacchino 2010. If ever a wine was made to be drunk in the summer, surely Gavi has to win. Beautifully scented with lime and blossom, it has a crisp acidity that cries out to be savoured with some simply grilled fish.

Cederberg Sauvignon Blanc 2011. Cederberg is one of the most highly respected wineries in South Africa and has won a stack of awards over the last few years. They occupy the highest vineyard area in the Western Cape and make some astonishingly good wines with great purity of flavour. The winemaker David Nieuwoudt has said that he wants people “to try my wines and think of these mountain ranges, unique and untouched”. 3

Domain Houchart, Côtes de Provence Rosé 2011. This summer case really wouldn’t be complete without a fantastic rosé and where better than from Provence? Beautifully fruity with just the right amount of acidity and gorgeous strawberry and raspberry notes on the finish. 4

5 Tre Rose Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2009. From one of the leading estates in the region, this is refined, elegant and goes beautifully with most roasted red meats. The tannins are soft and juicy, and the savoury note on the finish combines to make this a real classic Italian red.

Domaine Moreau Bourgogne Rouge 2010. A general rule of thumb for Burgundy is to buy on the basis of the estate rather than the vineyard area – a Bourgogne Rouge from an excellent estate will frequently be much better than a lesser estate’s named region or even village wine (such as Cotes de Nuits or Chambolle Musigny). This is a beauty: medium bodied, soft tannins, red fruits, with savoury notes and some herby characters. 6

the olympic capital for 2012 best hotels The Savoy, A Fairmont Managed Hotel ‘The Savoy’. They are two words that resonate around the world; simple shorthand for all that is beautiful and immaculate in a fine hotel. Since first opening its doors in 1889, The Savoy has gone on to welcome generations of royalty, world leaders and legends of the stage and screen. Today, and resplendent after a complete refurbishment, the hotel seamlessly blends its original Edwardian and Art Deco interiors with state of the art comfort, elegance and glamour. The 268 guestrooms and suites give breathtaking views of London and the River Thames. Nine ‘personality suites’ have also been styled after some of the hotel’s most eminent guests, and a newly created twobedroomed Royal Suite is, as you would expect, fit for a King. In the hotel kitchens once graced by Auguste Escoffier, Gordon Ramsay has returned to the Savoy Grill and the beloved River Restaurant is open once again. And for an aperitif before dining, or just a quick drink in passing, legendary bartender Harry Craddock’s classic cocktails are still served in the newly renovated American Bar. The new Beaufort Bar also offers one of the finest selections of Champagne in London.

LONDON 201

LONDON 20

St. Pancras Renaissance London Hotel The St Pancras Renaissance is a London icon and a model of modern hospitality. Behind the fairytale façade, fashioned by Sir George Gilbert Scott for the Midland Grand Hotel, this 5-star hotel mingles Victorian splendour with contemporary style and service. You are greeted by a spectacular glazed entrance hall where Victorian high society once alighted from horse-drawn carriages. And a grand staircase sweeps you down to the Gilbert Scott Restaurant, where the brilliant, fresh brasserie cuisine of Marcus Wareing awaits. This luxury London hotel hosts 245 guest rooms, including 38 beautifully restored and updated suites. When you’re ready to tear yourself away from your room, take a journey of the senses in the St Pancras Spa, or treat yourself to the traditional barbering and latest grooming techniques of Melogy, the male grooming salon.

45 Park Lane - Dorchester Collection From its sleek, iconic architecture to its cosmopolitan interiors, 45 Park Lane is a distinctly modern hotel with a genuine sense of vitality. It celebrates the unique creative energy of London, with striking contemporary artworks displayed throughout the hotel’s public areas and in every room and suite. The collection includes paintings and unique prints by such luminaries as Sir Peter Blake, Christian Furr, Brendan Neiland, Bruce McClean, and Damien Hirst. The hotel features CUT, a contemporary American steak restaurant, whose walls are decorated with limited edition diamond dust screenprints from Hirst’s Psalms series, with their kaleidoscopic, butterflyfestooned compositions providing a feast for the eye.

The Goring near Buckingham Palace Famously the hotel where Kate Middleton spent her last night as a single woman, the Goring has inspired many column inches in praise of its traditions, standards and service. Esquire Magazine USA wrote: “The Goring... a hotel that makes you greedy for what’s inside - a luxurious garden, a splendid lounge and terrace, an unbearably good restaurant and unswerving service. There is a hum borne of elegance and assurance, one that comes from being four generations in the same family, from being built without frequent-flier points or the throb of a second-rate health club. But you’ll have to listen for it, because, like The Goring itself, this sound is as subtle and unerring as a heartbeat.” The actor Christopher Plummer concurs: “From the moment I checked in at The Goring I knew I was going to be pampered. Radiating charm and tranquillity, it resembles a country hotel in the midst of a bustling city. The food is scrumptious, the service caring and impeccable and humour toujours à la carte! To stay anywhere else in London is inconceivable too - it would be like snubbing a favourite nanny.” W London - Leicester Square There couldn’t be a more vibrant location for W London than Leicester Square: home of London’s movie premieres, and right on the doorstep Soho, Chinatown, Piccadilly and Regent Street. Inside, true luxury meets innovative design in the 192 rooms and suites, from a Spa Suite to the penthouse ‘E WOW’ Suite (see details below). You can also expect the unexpected in Wyld, their signature bar, re-energize at AWAY Spa, and treat yourself to Southeast Asian-inspired cuisine at JeanGeorges Vongerichten’s Spice Market. EXTREME WOW SUITE Encounter modern sophistication redefined in our Extreme Wow Suite. Home to the most captivating views in the entire hotel—facing Leicester Square, with sparkling vistas of the West End—it invites you to experience the city from sunup to sundown. Host an extravagant affair or prepare for whatever comes next thanks to the Jacuzzi, four-person shower, dazzling mirrorball sculpture, walk-in dressing room and more.

best restaurants the ledbury A beautiful, theatrical room with great curtain swags and widely spaced tables makes the perfect backdrop for the cooking of Australian double-Michelin-starred chef Brett Graham. His food is big and rich and utterly luxurious. Everything is like a picture on the plate and served on beautiful china by staff trained to within an inch of their lives. Not that there’s any sense of stiffness – with Graham being Australian, how could there be? It’s just that everything is right. Seasons are watched to the minute so that only the babiest, the tenderest and the sweetest make it onto your plate. The wine list is packed with brilliant bins, all of them crying out to be tried.

Apsleys

Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s

Apsleys, in London’s iconic hotel The Lanesborough, is the first restaurant outside Italy created by internationally renowned chef Heinz Beck. Holder of three Michelin stars at La Pergola in Rome, Beck earned the restaurant its own Michelin Star in February 2010 - the fastest London establishment to be bestowed with the award. The Executive Chef, Heros De Agostinis, who started his culinary career with an internship at Beck’s La Pergola in 1995, has spent the last three years as Beck’s culinary right hand man.

Contemporary European cuisine is yours to enjoy at Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s - an elegant restaurant in the heart of Mayfair from one of the world’s most famous celebrity chefs. This smart Mayfair restaurant is within walking distance of the stylish shopping districts of Oxford Street and Piccadilly. The intimate and peaceful art deco dining room is a wonderful setting for a romantic dinner, or indeed for entertaining a valued client.

The creativity and luxury of the menu combines perfectly with the grandeur of The Lanesborough, which has long enjoyed its status as one of the world’s most luxurious and lauded hotels.

The seasonal Gordon Ramsay menu showcases a refined selection of modern dishes from across Europe. It includes fillets of John Dory, poached breast and confit leg of Creedy Carver duck, and Scottish lemon sole with crushed Jersey royals, lobster and braised radishes.

Helene Darroze at The Connaught

Hunky Frenchman Claude Bosi made the successful move from Ludlow to London more than three years ago and has not looked back. The food is neither flouncy nor pretentious, but brilliantly conceived and delivered with élan. We love the Devon crab with pressed leek and liquorice, and the roast Shropshire partridge with caper and raisin sauce.

The French chattering classes discuss Hélène Darroze more than they do politics or the economy. The single mum from south-west France is a phenomenon, who Eurostars between Paris and London, watching her pots boil in both cities and her Michelin star count rise – she currently has two at the Connaught. Everything is utterly refined and assured: Hélène brings a French sensibility to a very English dining room and it works.

Earlier this year, Bosi opened the Fox & Grapes pub in Wimbledon, where he is winning plaudits.

You should not visit without trying the signature dish of Gillardeau oyster tartare or saddle of Pyrenean lamb ‘en rognonnade’ (with its kidneys).

A tribute to team gb The athletes do the work: you enjoy the tea. It’s an irresistible idea from the Langham in London. Already famous for their thoroughly indulgent approach to the ritual of afternoon tea, now comes an exultant celebration. Executive Pastry Chef Cherish Finden has created an array of delights in order to mark Team GB’s remarkable medal haul in the London Olympics 2012. Each is inspired by different Olympic sports and icons, including: •T he Torch – A Cornish sea seal caramel-filled cone, bringing together a host of fine British ingredients. • The red Raspberry dome – made with traditional Kentish raspberries and representing the ball games; tennis, basketball, football and handball. • The white Tower – a tall white chocolate and passion fruit tower representing javelin, archery, shooting - and of course the passion of the games. • The blue Macaroon – a blueberry and bubble gum macaroon that brings it all together with a symbol of unity: the Union Jack.
