SAVOIR

THE BED THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF When the legendary Savoy Hotel in London recently opened its doors after a £220m refurbishment, the ultimate name in luxurious beds took its place in the finest suites - just as it has since 1905.

SAVOIR BEDS

Liza Minnelli was so impressed with the Savoir bed at the Savoy she bought the mattress and took it home with her A word of gentle warning, should you be tempted to splash out on a stay at the fabulously re-created Savoy Hotel in London. The expense may well carry on long after you’ve settled your account. Take a River View Suite and you will sleep on a Savoir Bed. Indeed in the Royal Suite, you’ll experience the Savoir No. 1 bed which features 1,600 individually pocketed springs, 16kg of teased natural hair, the equivalent of 20 horse tails, layers of cotton felt and pure fleece wool padding – and 4kg of pure cashmere. In the words of Savoir’s Alistair Hughes

once you have experienced the No. 1, it is nigh on impossible to return to just another bed. History bears him out. The Savoir bed has a long history of creating passionate converts who, once caressed by this ultimate in bedding, will sleep on nothing else. Years ago the late King Hassan II of Morocco was staying at Claridge’s, and was even in the habit of sending ahead his own personal mattress. However, on one stay it was damaged and he had to ‘settle’ for a Savoir No.2. In the morning, he proclaimed “it was like sleeping on a cloud”, and promptly ordered 24 for his palace.

The ‘Savoy Bed’ Savoir’s success dates back to 1905 when the Savoy Hotel decided that no bed available delivered the luxurious night’s sleep their guests required. They commissioned their own (the ‘Savoy bed’) from the prestigious upholsterer James Edwards Ltd. It was an instant success, and over the years it would welcome the frames of Sir Winston Churchill, Harry S. Truman, Noel Coward, Enrico Caruso, Maria Callas and countless others luminaries. Indeed the bed – which is still made today as the Savoir No. 2 – was so popular that the Savoy actually bought the upholstery company to prevent it from supplying their competitors. Production continued at the ‘Bedworks’ in London’s Drury Lane, close to the hotel, and the beds remained exclusive to The Savoy and its sister establishments of Claridge’s, The Connaught and The Berkeley. When the Savoy closed for its major refurbishment in 2007, many of the hotel’s historic contents were auctioned. This included Savoir beds, and caused frenzied bidding not just to acquire the ultimate bed – but one previously occupied by Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Charlie Chaplin or John Wayne.

13

A FIVE-STAR SLEEP AT HOME On October 10th 2010 Savoir Beds once again took their place in the Savoy Hotel, continuing a 105 yearold tradition. Happily, the experience – the bed part, at least – is something you can also enjoy at home. Savoir beds is now an independent company, offering the same uncompromised standards for private clients’ own commissions. Every bed is unique and tailormade to your instructions. Every frame is measured and cut to size, and perhaps the most personal detail – the firmness of the mattress - is created to your own preferences. (Strife between couples is neatly avoided with the option of different specifications for each side...) Every detail is then hand-made, taking Savoir’s craftsmen more than 60 hours to make. Your bed can also be upholstered in any fabric and style you like; a final touch that makes each luxurious bed truly bespoke.

Beauty, simplicity, luxury - automatically SENSORY ARE TAKING THE POSSIBILITIES OF HOME AUTOMATION TO NEW HEIGHTS.

The notion of screens and speakers descending from secret panels to create a home cinema – or a bath that ills with precisely the right amount of water at exactly the right temperature – was the stuff of movies.

Imagine, for example, watching the irst part of a movie in the bath; then picking it up again in your dressing room; and enjoying the denouement in your cinema after dinner.

Sensory are architects, designers and installers of some of the world’s most complex and sophisticated home automation. They are in the business of making dreams happen for their clients. So although they are masters of the science of volts, amps, code and programs, they are equally focused on the end-result: on beauty, simplicity, luxury – and fun.

Imagine sensors which automatically react to the changing light and climatic conditions of the day. Opening and shutting widows and blinds; irrigating your garden automatically; and cueing up your preferred playlist and lighting ambience to welcome you after a hard day.

Today, in the expert hands of Sensory, automation is very much science fact.

The Sensory story began in the toughest environment of all: at sea. The company honed and perfected their craft aboard superyachts. At sea, everything must perform flawlessly (calling out an engineer in the Indian Ocean is not exactly practical). It must be accommodated in conined spaces. And it must work in complete harmony with some of the world’s most exquisite interior design. Now, Sensory are making life harmonious and luxurious on dry land as well. They provide unrivalled design in the following disciplines: • Home cinema • Audio visual • Cable infrastructure • Security

• Lighting • IT/data networking • Communications • Integrated controls.

Imagine answering a ring at your gate, from your bathroom, boardroom or a beach in Bali.

A Sensory-designed system allows you to enjoy a lifestyle that combines imagination, elegance and technology. And all at your command.

Your complete automation resource

Sensory are not just experts, but partners who offer all the help and ideas you need:

• Design: their consulting team first takes a detailed brief from you, to understand your aims and objectives. They will then tailor system options to you, and invite you to the Sensory Cinema Experience at UBER. • Installation: this is as important as the technology itself. Sensory shares UBER’s ethos of making every installation technically and aesthetically perfect.

• Service & maintenance: Sensory offers a range of service contracts to keep your systems working at the peak of performance and to advise on upgrade paths. They’re also just a call away for any and every question you may have.

FUTURE PROJECTIONS

WELCOME TO THE MEDIA ROOM. EVERY HOME SHOULD HAVE ONE. The world has come a long way since cutting-edge ‘home entertainment’ meant a TV, a VCR and a stereo system.

Indeed, the options are now so exciting and so accessible, they deserve their own room: the media room. This is particularly true since, in expert hands, you don’t even need an extra room to have a media room. Your entire system can be designed to be concealed – or even disappear – behind screens and secret panels. UBER works closely with home automation specialists Sensory to customise a best-of-both worlds solution: stunning home entertainment, beautifully incorporated into the unique design and demands of your home.

On a

SCREEN near you

UBERLIFESTYLE.COM • 0845 0773280

At long last, we are truly in the digital era with high definition (HD) television. Until recently, the signal you received was digital at its source, but then had to be converted into analogue, then sent down a cable to your screen, where it was then converted yet again. Not surprisingly, the casualty was picture quality. TV and HD Transmissions – Gentlemen, there is simply nothing better than watching your favourite sport, with a group of friends, in High Deinition on a Projection Screen! Most Sky Sports HD transmissions have Dolby Digital Surround Sound too, so you get the atmosphere of the crowd, its almost like being there. Same can be said for Sky Movies. They are pretty much all HD now, and Digital Surround Sound is available for most. Sometimes, its better than DVD. But to be clear, any TV transmission can be viewed on a projector system. Of equal importance, your entertainment can be projected, with your screen as the inal link in a digital chain which can bring you an array of entertainment, data, games and fun.

The choice is yours:

• HD TV. Once you’ve enjoyed this remarkable picture quality, there’s no turning back. But just as important is the sound. For example, most Sky HD transmissions are in Dolby Digital Surround Sound, putting you at the heart of the action. No media room is complete without surround sound speakers; sound is 50% of the experience.

• DVDs. Now you can call up your complete DVD library with Kaleidescape. It stores all your DVDs, and you simply choose them on screen, either from a list or from the cover art (like album sleeves on an iPod). Kaleidescape also reprocesses DVDs up to pristine HD standard. And then there’s Blu Ray, taking DVD to new heights.

And there’s more. For the true digital connoisseur, may we recommend Audio Video Motion? It’s a very special movie theatre seat that moves, tilts and rocks according to a pre-programmed code written onto the DVD. Never have you had such a moving experience at the movies. Alternatively, how about a seating system (matched entirely to your décor, naturally) that is fitted with rumbling transducer speakers to give a seismic feel to explosive action? Or a massage seat? Or a seat with its own personal fridge to keep your drink at the perfect the temperature? Anything and everything is possible.

The room with a future No matter how you see your Media Room – whether a gleaming shrine to digital entertainment, or an elegant room that only reveals its digital secrets at the touch of a button – Sensory and UBER are introducing clients to a new realm of possibilities. An excellent first port of call is a demonstration of the Sensory Cinema Experience, at the UBER showroom. There you can see – and indeed feel – the extraordinary experiences that can be replicated in your own media room.

You can also discuss exactly what you want from a media room, and indeed let Sensory open your eyes and ears to everything on offer. They can then design a recommended room layout, including the optimum screen size and acoustic treatment. Then, using 3-D computer modelling, they can show you how your media room will look and perform.

The future of home entertainment is already here.

• Gaming. Again, with surround sound completing the experience, Playstation 3, xBox and Nintendo have brought a whole new dimension to gaming.

• On line. You can project everything you do online with your computer, onto your screen. And, of course, your personal media such as home videos and photos can also get the presentation they deserve. Internet protocol TV (IPTV) also has a huge future: as broadband speeds improve, so will the quality. But even now, live ‘streamed’ TV, as well as BBC iPlayer and Channel 4’s 4oD, is great when it’s projected.

UBER seeks out the best in design - Bentley Mulsanne

Design

with the power to move THE 184MPH BENTLEY MULSANNE.

BENTLEY

Most cars, even the most desired, have a pretender to their crown: a rival that comes close or even equals them in terms of style, design and performance. Think of the prestige German cars. Think of sports cars and classic roadsters, the compacts and the 4 x 4s. There is, however, one marque that occupies an unchallenged position in creating unbridled English luxury coupled with the sheer love of performance driving. Its name is Bentley. The Bentley Mulsanne, launched earlier this year, defies comparison with any other car. The pinnacle of Bentley’s ultra-luxury car range has scaled new heights of beauty, design, engineering – and the unshakable belief that anything is possible. The engineering is worthy of a book in itself, but let’s turn our attentions here to design and craftsmanship. Because behind every Bentley are the myriad skills of over 100 world-class craftspeople: from coachbuilders and coppersmiths to electronics specialists and cabinetmakers.

Interior. Exterior. Invariably Superior. From the outside, the Mulsanne quickens the pulse at first glance. Perhaps it’s the muscular haunches that are all about power and speed. Or the seamless, flowing lines that seem almost to suggest the car is sculpted from a single block. Either way, the Mulsanne is a homage to a glorious past, yet with a totally contemporary take on automotive design. But it is perhaps inside that the Bentley difference is at its most pronounced. Indeed around half of the 170 hours it takes to build a Mulsanne are lavished on the interior. And it shows. The leathers for the sumptuous upholstery are chosen from specific herds in southern Germany, which are noted for their blemish-free hides. The veneers are Burr Walnut, a commodity so rare that every leaf can be traced back to the tree it came from. Bentley is the only coachbuilder to use ‘mirror matching’, painstakingly composing each leaf to make a perfect symmetrical pattern across the entire area. Like a fingerprint, no two are ever the same.

The carpet of the Mulsanne is unique to Bentley, giving a deep, tactile sense of luxury to the cabin. Pure wool, deep pile Wilton-weave over-mats can add a further touch of indulgence. All of these touches have one thing in common: they demand time. Each steering wheel, for example, can take 15 hours to hand-stitch, while the gleaming stainless steel brightware requires an intensive 10-hour finishing process. A wood veneer takes five weeks to turn from a rough root ball into a full set of mirror-matched, finely polished leaves. Mulliner: your personal signature Perhaps the ultimate indulgence is to enlist the assistance of Bentley’s Mulliner team. With their expert help, you can customise your Mulsanne to your own specific requirements.

How about a bespoke refrigerated drinks cooler? Or your personal insignia or crest embroidered into the exquisite leather? Or an extended wheelbase to give an even more capacious interior? Or the installation of state of the art technology to create the ultimate fully-functioning office? They can even match the interior colour to a favourite handbag (or, for that matter, your dog...). The exciting point here is not so much that these things can be done – but the panache and sure footed artistry with which they are accomplished by the Mulliner team. For further information on the new Bentley Mulsanne visit www.mulsanne.bentleymotors.com

An exclusive from the world launch of the Mulsanne at Aldourie, Scotland.

So you’ve chosen your Bentley. Now for the hard part. BENTLEY DESIGN GURU MELINDA-JUNE JENKINS IS RESPONSIBLE FOR A FEAST OF EXQUISITE COLOURS AND CHOICES.

Thankfully, the automotive sector has come a long way since Henry Ford’s “Any colour you like as long as it’s black” philosophy. Indeed at Bentley they have a design guru whose sole focus is on colour and trim. Her name is Melinda-June Jenkins, and she is responsible for the exquisite colourways and options available to choose with the Bentley Mulsanne. For the past five years, Melinda has been responsible for overseeing everything from a selection of hide colours to veneers, carpets, overmats and body finishes for the launch of the Mulsanne. She brings an exquisite eye to the task, building on her own natural talent with experience garnered from a range of disciplines. Her five-year degree course at Niederrhein University in Krefeld, Germany (‘the City of Silks’) included placements ranging from a Durham-based carpet maker to a Tuscan company specialising in Jacquard silk weaving. After graduating (her thesis: men’s ties) she worked first for a supplier of car upholstery fabrics before joining Audi. There she worked on the ground-breaking TT, then in Quattro, Audi’s newly formed personalisation department, and then as deputy head of the entire colour and trim department.

BENTLEY

She then moved to Bentley. She says: “What clinched it for me was Crewe. Cars are built here, not assembled. It inspires me to work in a place where skills are used to make beautiful objects.” Melinda gets her inspiration from anywhere and everywhere, ranging from furniture fairs to the interior design trends in areas such as boats, yachts and planes. On a recent trip to the Orkneys, she even returned with Brodgar, the inspiration for a new Bentley paint inspired by the colour of the Neolithic stone circle there. She does not, however, look to couture and fleeting fashion trends. She says: “With fashion, you can have colours that are specific to one season. A Bentley is a lasting decision. It’s a living space that also happens to be moving.” Melinda’s exhaustive research for the Mulsanne also took her to the Bentley archives to seek out colours, design influences, stories and the rich heritage of Grand Tourers. In turn this led her to re-introducing duo-tone combinations, evoking memories of heritage two-tone splits seen on Bentleys in the 1930s and 1950s.

Colour is pure emotion. Our challenge is to help each customer capture a mood that fits their character perfectly. MELINDA-JUNE JENKINS

Turner Hannes Wettstein To most, it’s a design contradiction: formal, yet relaxed. Yet Turner squares this circle with elegant simplicity through an easy mechanism which adjusts the depth of the seating. The sofa evolves from formal space to a relaxing oasis. It’s an object lesson in modular-base design logic, encompassing traditional sofas, chaises longues and daybeds. And all accomplished with balanced volumes, controlled proportions and a contemporary yet timeless look.

Making waves TECHNICAL DESIGN, INNOVATION AND AN APPRECIATION OF VISUAL IMPACT. WHEN IT ALL COMES TOGETHER, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. There is something about a pool that takes a beautiful home to the next level.

A pool adds an unmatched ambience of wellbeing and calm. In expert hands, it also opens up exciting possibilities to create an oasis of indulgence and privacy. That expert knowledge has been here in the North-West for nearly 25 years. In that time, Cheshire Wellness (more widely known as Cheshire Spas and Pools) has been designing and building exquisite spas and pools in ine homes, hotels and itness centres all over the region, the country and indeed the world.

Over the decades, Cheshire Wellness has been at the forefront of developing Wellness design into an entirely new dimension. In addition to the classic swimming pool, their repertoire includes a vast range of spas, Hammams, steam rooms, snow rooms, igloos, exotic mud baths and meditation rooms.

And, as importantly, they have taken the long experience they have gained serving the commercial Wellness spa market, into private residences. DISCOVER A WATSU POOL ONCE YOU’VE EXPERIENCED IT, YOU WILL BE HOOKED Cheshire Wellness has worked on designs aimed to push the boundaries in the concept of water visualisation. We believe that the only thing that limits design is imagination. One of the many prestigious contracts that Cheshire Wellness completed in 2009 was the ground-breaking wellness facilities at Hoole Hall, Cheshire, which won the SPATA Commercial pool of the Year award for 2010. All these facilities can be replicated at home.

The project consists of a new 18m x 4.5m lap pool, sunken lounge, indoor hydro pool & Watsu pool. The object of the initial design was to seamlessly link between the pool, relaxation areas, hydro-pool and Watsu pool in a one-piece concrete construction.

Main Lap Pool

The lap pool is a concrete basement deck-level pool, tiled to give an inviting Mediterraneanbluelook to the water. It features a minimalistic stone grating set slightly below floor level to drain away overlows. And its basement walls have the effect of seamlessly disappearing into the lap pool.

Welcome to the Sunken Lounge

Nestled between the hydro and main pool is the sunken cushioned lounge. Take a seat: glass panels enable you to view the surrounding areas at water level whilst being shielded from the sound travelling over the waters from other bathers. A real fire here gives a cosy, intimate ambience; you won’t want to move an inch.

The Hydro Pool The indoor hydro pool provides a sublimely relaxing experience in the form of air beds. These moulded loungers lie just below the surface of the water and give you a relaxing massage using multiple air jets. The seating area provides an additional relaxation experience using dual massaging jets at each station.

Discover a Watsu pool

A word of caution: once you’ve experienced your Watsu pool, you’ll be hooked. It brings together elements of massage, shiatsu, muscle stretching and even dance movements. And all the while you feel weightless, cradled, rocked and stretched in the warm waters, creating a trancelike state. Watsu offers a range of therapeutic beneits and potential healing.

Sauna, steam room, Hammam and aroma rooms Cheshire Wellness offers a complete range of rooms, made of ‘natural’ stone and with fine vaulted faceted ceilings. These capture the essence of the ancient Hammams of Istanbul, with under-lit water bowls creating ripples on the ceilings.

The aroma room

Imagine sitting in a gently heated room, the air infused with invigorating aromas to calm the soul.

The options and possibilities offered by Cheshire Wellness are as varied as the residences and clients they serve.

The Watsu pool extends like a shaft of light into the outdoors, and the retractable roof means that the pool can be utilised all year round. Within the Watsu area there is also a ‘bubble bench’, where you can sit and relax in an outdoor environment with a cascading waterfall.

The process to perfection It is a privilege to be asked to bring our unique design philosophy to a fine country house. It is also a task that UBER addresses in carefully structured phases, giving our client complete involvement in the project’ s evolution. Here, we unfold the design story of Huntington House in Surrey, focusing on the hub of family life: the ground floor kitchen and living areas of this fine 17,000 sq.ft. residence.

Stage 1: The Architect’s initial drawing

BEFORE

Our role begins where the architect’s plans broadly inish. Working alongside the architect we take their initial concept drawings and inject a lifestyle perspective. We look further at space, lighting and technology and introduce those elements that will make living in your home a joy. Over the next 8 pages we walk you through the design process before the irst brick is laid.

Stage 2: Spatial planning and indicative furniture layout You walk from the fabulous entrance hall, where a roof lantern offers a lood of light. The main stairwell was dressed with a grand chandelier that majestically spans two loors. This theme is now followed through to the lobby with another stunning lighting instalment, but here it starts at ground level and penetrates through the loor into the basement area. This gives both practical light and drama to this functional hall space. The previously tight, functional corridors leading to the cloakrooms have been opened up, allowing them to be dressed and to enhance the ‘grand’ feel of the property. Continuity and proportion are now consistent; just one example is how we have opened up the cloakroom to the left of the hall. As the hub of the home, the kitchen plays a crucial role – especially where children and family life is concerned. This is why our spatial planning focused on making the kitchen the ‘nerve centre’. Indeed, from the kitchen island you can see most of the expansive ground floor: into the Garden Room to the right, sweeping left to the new Family Dining and formal Dining Room areas, across to the Drawing Room on the other side and diagonally through the Cloaks Hall to the far study, and left to the children’s Play Lounge and Play Room. Even so, this open plan approach cleverly incorporates separate spaces for the very different ways in which family members pass their time. We also believe you don’t have to use a room in order to enjoy it. The formal Dining Room, typically used perhaps 20% of the time, is nevertheless always seen from the Grand Hall, through glass wine cabinets on either side of a light. The central wine rack is both visually arresting but invitingly accessible: it’s perfectly positioned for the Kitchen, the Dining Room and the Drawing Room.

The process to perfection The visual elegance of beautiful interior design belies a huge amount of energy, experience and sheer attention to detail below the surface. Every facet of a successful installation must be beautiful to behold, a joy to experience – and able to function, without fail. There is no shortcut to this happy outcome. Even a small project entails literally hundreds of individual speciications. In the case of Huntington House – considerably more. The architect’s drawing is of course our starting point. The process to perfection

We believe that the homes with special ambience are the homes that relect a clear direction from their owners. You may have firm design ideas – or indeed none at all. Either way, one of the irst things we do is simply to sit down and listen. We need to delve into your likes, passions and dreams (and root out your dislikes too). With our guidance, you’ll ind your inluences come from anywhere and everywhere: from childhood memories and cherished keepsakes; from memorable, mind-expanding trips; and, of course, from magazines, design fairs and friends whose style you respect. We use all these expressions as the catalyst for a complete, and totally personalised, design concept that’s all about you. We mix palettes of colours. We’ll inspire you with textures, from rough stone and glossy marble to soft silks and delicate wafting voiles.

Our creativity leads to a multitude of ideas which, working with you, we hone down to arrive at the essence of your design-self.

Typically we like to add drama, glamour and luxury to our interiors to make you feel special and give you something to smile about time and time again whether it be a delicate pair of crystal wall lights, a murano glass chandelier with a twist, or a bespoke glass wine cabinet and humidor. We uncover and reveal textures and colours that feed the soul and wow your senses. The previous decades had a tendency to pigeon-hole design (‘minimalist’, ‘traditional’...) You know what boundaries are for: to be questioned, pushed and challenged.

At UBER, we show our clients how they get the best of everything – because we never stop scouring the UK and indeed the world for its elusive design secrets.

We jealously guard our relationships with truly exceptional fabric and furnishings specialists, and carry extensive stocks that show you how the most unexpected routes can take you to fabulous design destinations. Usually, we take at least one linking element from room to room to create a low. This could be simply through colour or tone, but equally it could be a surface texture. Either way, UBER clients enjoy the knowledge that every stone has been turned, every swatch considered, every sample explored to bring you design solutions that are inspired and surprising.

We uncover and reveal textures and colours that feed the soul and wow your senses.

4

Stage 4: Mood boards Describing a design concept is like trying to put into words a particular lavour or texture. Not easy. It’s much better to convey your thinking through the clarity and expression of Mood boards.

Our team amasses ideas, pushes boundaries and, if the brief allows it, runs riot. Themes and schemes, textures and colours, inishes and atmospheres. Through a myriad of ideas, the Mood Board process takes you on a design journey of different options and possibilities. Just when you thought you ‘knew what you liked’ – be ready for curveballs, quirks and ripped-up rulebooks.

UBER has a well established relationship with one of the best fabric and furnishings specialist in the North and we keep a good stock on site of our most inspirational wallpaper finds at close hand for anyone to peruse. As well as travelling the globe to pick out the great and the good on a regular basis. Usually we take at least one common or linking element from room to room to create that flow. Unless you have a true one-room open plan loor, rooms by their very nature serve differing functions and their personality can very much shape a palette. The Kitchen

Whilst we’re mindful we like to show off a room to its best potential and create something of a consistency. This might not be as obvious as colours or tones, but could be a surface texture for instance.

It goes without saying we seek out the highest quality, latest designs, best prices and care more about the detail than you’ll be interested to know. Rest assured, safe in the knowledge your home’s been thoroughly thought through, with you, for you and your family for many years of enjoyment.

5

Stage 5: Detailed individual room schemes

Alongside the right-brain process of creating a design concept comes the left-brain task of drilling down to the detail. On the basis that you can’t specify a job without being specific, UBER has a dedicated in-house team to be just that. We painstakingly provide highly detailed plans for each individual room. The depth and curvature of coving; the precise design of a tap; the required marquetry for a table - no detail escapes our attention.

43

6

Stage 6: CGI visualisation This is where all the pieces in the design puzzle come together, virtually. Having agreed the design, and its component parts, we now visualise the end-result by using CGI (Computer Generated Imagery). We believe this is the best way to communicate how the end result will look, before we go ahead and actually create it. By blending accomplished drawing with the latest in high-end CGI, we give our clients the best possible insight into the look, feel and spatial sense of the completed project.

The Kitchen / Family Dining

This very lexible design is informal enough for everyday family life, yet also rises to smarter occasions. All appliances have been banished into tall architectural anchor elements which frame the kitchen at either end, and form gateways into other living areas. The result is that the main kitchen is all about clean lines, uncluttered surfaces and a welcoming yet elegant feel. (An additional utility area is available for users such as outside caterers.)

Key to the welcoming feel is the island. With bar chairs and a drinks/coffee station to hand, it encourages a slow and relaxed enjoyment of the space.

Visually and architecturally, the kitchen also links into the Dining Room and onwards to the Drawing Room, as well as the family day areas of the ground loor. This luidity from room to room is a hallmark of the overall design.

£9,215 I & I, PLAYING WITH TRADITION ROUND RUG www.UBER-interiors.com

THE IMPOSSIBLE ‘SHELVED’ FOR THIRTY YEARS: GLASS SHELVES NO. 1 (1976) An art installation? Or a functional object you can use? Now, for the first time, The Glass Shelves is both. Originally designed in 1976 by the charismatic artist and architect Shiro Kuramata, it was conceived as a work of art. In fact, at that time, it was technically impossible to build as a functional item. Now, with the aid of new technology, the piece can be made to a sufficient strength to be used and enjoyed at home or in a commercial environment. Yet it still retains the artistic integrity of the original concept: made in12mm glass, it challenges you to ask whether you’re seeing an illusion, or reality.

ART AT YOUR FEET: THE ROUND RUG This hand-knotted woollen and silk rug has been given a new twist by the designer Richard Hutten. He says: “For many years I had the idea to do something with traditional oriental carpets. I have an antique Persian carpet at home, which I still find is the best carpet to have. The idea behind the carpet was to build a bridge between the old and the new, east meets west. From this starting point I looked at various ways to give a reinterpretation. I came up with the idea to stretch the carpet at a certain point. I found out it’s very important where to start the stretching. On the traditional side I kept the fringes, on the contemporary side I made a clear cut.”

Castles in the Air

UBER seeks out the best in design - Blue Forest For every child who dreams of a tree house, a grown-up isn’t far behind.

That’s what’s so exciting about specialist company Blue Forest, who turn this unique fantasy into a stunning reality.

In the hands of Blue Forest, a tree house can be anything you want it to be. An escapist adventure room. A luxurious outdoor hideaway. An ofice. Or a group of separate ideas, brought together in their own elevated community. Seldom have creativity and craftsmanship been so beautifully coupled.

THE DESIGN BRIEF: Some situations lend themselves not just to a treehouse, but a small complex. Our brief here was to create an idyllic aerial space that proves a quite unique place to entertain – as well as a truly magical children’s den for endless adventures.

OUR SOLUTION: THE GROWNUPS’ TREEHOUSE LODGE: This is entertaining on a higher plane. Literally. We created a Treehouse Lodge complete with a bespoke mini-kitchen, loo and spacious living area with ample room for garden and dinner parties. The exterior inish includes our signature style thatched roof, and the walls are clad in hand-split oak shingles and cedar tongue and groove boards.

THE CHILDREN’S FANTASY TREEHOUSE: Straight out of a fairy tale, we designed a fantasy treehouse featuring three separate medieval towers and connecting rope bridges. For Barnes Walker there is no such thing as an unimportant detail

At UBER we believe that creative design is essential in every strand of life: whether it’s a home, a handbag, a teaspoon – or a garden.

Equally, we know our limits. Landscape design is its own unique discipline, which is why we team up with, unquestionably, the finest landscape architects in the region: Barnes Walker. Barnes Walker are unique in their ield creating breathtaking ideas and supporting them with the technical knowledge, and organisational resources, to make things happen beautifully.

The Barnes Walker practice is now approaching its 25th anniversary – and its two thousandth commission - bringing its unique brand of landscape architecture to everywhere from town houses and roof gardens to courtyard spaces and country estates. They complement outside what UBER do inside where the same rules apply: inspiration, professionalism and fresh, surprising design.

UBERLIFESTYLE.COM • 0845 0773280

Nick Walker at Barnes Walker, says:

We have a creative and rewarding environment that means we can attract, and hold on to, the very best talent. In turn, this translates into stunning results for our clients. A breath of fresh air The practice approaches every site as a unique project, working with the existing spaces, characteristics and landforms – and with an in-depth knowledge of local planning and other regulations that may come into play. A typical example is when Barnes Walker was set the challenge of creating a stunning family home within a disused quarry (see illustration and extra detail, right).

Welcome to the

This exquisite Grade II listed property boasts an expansive, mature looking garden containing magnificent tree specimens and historical features. Barnes Walker was initially responsible for creating a masterplan which sensitively retained key historic elements whilst incorporating a new extension, drive and garaging within a classic family garden. Features of the garden include formal shrub and herbaceous borders which complement the design and scale of the building and gardens, and long vistas created to take advantage of the garden’s splendid size. There is also a selection of patio and lawn areas for day-to-day family relaxation and gatherings, as well as an intimate Knott Garden within a formal courtyard garden. This is complete with a bespoke sundial to provide interest when outside, and indeed when viewed from the house.

Barnes Walker’s design encompasses woodland management, the protection and creation of wetland habitats and hillside restoration, all forming the backdrop to this stunning property. The designers also have to tread softly: the site is designated as a Site of Biological Importance (SBI). The intention is to create a haven for a range of mammals, birds and insects and to develop a rich and diverse ecosystem. The project will also minimise the environmental impact of importing soils by making new soils from waste materials on site.

Clients are consistently amazed at what can happen when unfettered imagination is complemented by an ambitious, can-do attitude.

What do you do if your garage is blocking an otherwise beautiful panoramic vista? Barnes Walker solved this problem by relocating the garage – downwards. Those particular clients now have a fully operational underground garage (and an uninterrupted view - see picture below).

In a similar vein, the firm collaborated with luxury developers, Huntsmere, to gain planning permission to locate an entire house underground, in a particularly sensitive Conservation Area within Cheshire. This is believed to be the first of its kind in the UK. (See main photo and extra detail, right).

In another example, developers of a city centre project in Chester were required to include a spacious communal garden. Barnes Walker came up with some inspired lateral (or indeed vertical) thinking by creating a steel decked garden that ‘loated’ above ground level. This win-win solution maximised the space while giving the residents a stunning elevated view. (See illustration below.)

UBERLIFESTYLE.COM • 0845 0773280

Limehurst Underground House Located in the grounds of a Victorian mansion, only the entrance of this underground house - in the form of a garden folly set within formal hedges - will be visible from above ground. This luxury home of 3,800 sq. ft. is set to become an architectural landmark – especially with a water-chute linking the master bedroom on the first floor to a pool below, as well as a gym, swimming pool and three further bedrooms. The house has a circular form with a central atrium and the main rooms will be bathed in natural light from four ground level lightwells. However, state of the art luxury does not mean a compromise in eco-credentials. Ground source heat pumps under the lawn provide underfloor heating; a solar tube system provides hot water and a rainwater harvesting system will reduce water consumption. Electricity use will also be cut using a sophisticated lighting system combined with low-energy bulbs.

Thinking outside of

the box hedging It does not take an extraordinary project to receive exceptional care. Nick Walker at Barnes Walker says:

Every client receives a true attention to detail, from the original inception of the project, right through to its completion and indeed continuing maintenance. Barnes Walker believes that each project should be a collaboration between the client, their architect/ designer, and themselves. They also believe there is no such thing as an unimportant detail.

Every plant, shrub or tree is sourced from nurseries and specialist suppliers who understand what the firm expects. They are also delighted to accompany clients on supplier visits to select everything from specimen plants and topiary to stone paving and statuary. In addition to ground-breaking design (in every sense), Barnes Walker can also guide you on all kinds of environmentally positive actions, including rainwater collection and irrigation and, deep down, even ground source heating. There’s no place they won’t go to deliver the right result, beautifully completed.

EMMA WILLIS

The Queen of Jermyn Street WHEN IT COMES TO BESPOKE SHIRTS, MAYBE THE BEST MAN FOR THE JOB, IS A WOMAN.

Just as ‘Savile Row’ is shorthand for the world’s inest made-to-measure suits, so ‘Jermyn Street’ tells you all you need to know about a beautiful hand-made shirt.

That’s why it’s no surprise to see Emma Willis take her place among the other legendary shirtmakers congregated in that illustrious street of London SW1. Design, cut, shape, fabric, detail, inish – all come together beautifully under the expert eye of one of the industry’s most exciting practitioners. Emma’s creativity and fresh take on beautiful shirts has also led to her appointment as GQ Magazine’s ‘Shirt Style Shrink’. And she’s breaking the US, with an exciting collection at SAKS Fifth Avenue.

Rather closer to home, she’s also a frequent visitor to Headley Court where she donates her time and energy to making her beautiful shirts as gifts for injured servicemen undergoing treatment there.

In the English manner

At the risk of letting in a little daylight into the magic, Emma’s shirts, like everyone’s, are made away from Jermyn Street.

In her case, a Grade II listed town house in Gloucester, close to the cathedral. Inside is a workroom humming with the painstaking activity of producing an altogether iner class of shirt (and indeed boxer shorts, swimming trunks, dressing gowns, pyjamas and socks).

Emma’s philosophy is to adhere to the original traditions of English shirt making, using luxurious Italian and Swiss cottons, silks and linens. Many are exclusive to her collections.

Her team cuts the fabrics so that all patterns are matched at the seams. Each shirt is sewn at the rate of 18 stitches to the inch, using single needle stitching for the neatest, strongest seams. The collars are hand trimmed before they are turned to ensure clean cut, sharp points. They also use mother of pearl buttons, and little hand-made gussets at the side seams.

For you and you alone

Bespoke ittings in the Jermyn Street shop are not just about measuring you up. You will also receive a wealth of advice on the best weight of cotton for your lifestyle, such as voile, batiste, Oxford - or even cashmere & cotton, or a cotton and linen mix.

The joy of bespoke is that you have free range on the precise inish you want. This includes the colour of the stitching; and the weight of the lining – and contrast colours and patterns – for collars and cuffs. Your personal appointment will be with one of Emma’s tight-knit team of three, and they will store your measurements and preferences for future orders. You can then order shirts that are genuinely unique to you, from wherever you are in the world. You will however need to draw on a little patience. Craftsmanship takes time; in this case, it will be four to six weeks before you experience the sublime feeling of a beautiful fabric, cut in perfect alignment with your individual shape, fitting like a second skin. But one thing’s for sure: it will be well worth the wait.

IN A WORLD WHERE DESIGNERS VANISH AS FAST AS THE TRENDS THEY CREATE, IT TAKES SOME VERY SPECIAL QUALITIES TO REMAIN AT THE FOREFRONT.

JANE SPENCER CHURCHILL introduces the Pimlico Collection exclusive to Capitol Carpets of Chelsea In a world where designers vanish as fast as the trends they create, it takes some very special qualities to remain at the forefront.

Jane Churchill has been at the leading edge of interior design for some three decades.

She began her career in Pimlico, London, in the late 1970s, with her fresh take on fabric and wallpaper design. Her natural ability, and a passion for all the ingredients that make up a beautifully dressed interior, led her also into areas such as furniture, ireplaces, lighting and antiques. Together with her team of ive, she has designed everything from town houses and country retreats to executive ofices, Rolls Royces and boxes at Ascot.

You suddenly appreciate the effect of beautiful carpeting when you have something truly exceptional beneath your feet. We believe the Pimlico Collection to be just that; a perfect marriage of design and texture. Jane Churchill has created a collection that allows you to explore a wide colour palette: from warm creams, soft stones, muted greys and pastels to a full bodied red and black.

The range includes patterns and stripes that bestow an unmistakable elegance to drawing rooms, bedrooms, halls and stairs.

Made by Wilton in luxurious, 100% pure new wool, the Pimlico range is available exclusively at Capitol Carpets of Chelsea.

It is only natural, then, that floor coverings should now become the focus of the perceptive Spencer Churchill eye.

NEST The invisible men A BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED HOME, LIKE A SWAN, HAS AN EFFORTLESS ELEGANCE. EVERYTHING WORKS GRACEFULLY AND INVISIBLY. YET UNDERNEATH THE SURFACE, THE REAL ACTIVITY IS TAKING PLACE.

With UBER projects, the reason it’s invisible is the work of a company called NEST.

We are delighted to partner with NEST because – with the best will in the world – you have no desire to see their handiwork. Instead of pipes, you want warmth. Instead of boxes and bulges, you want clean lines and symmetry. So in a bathroom that’s all about multiple ittings, as well as major lighting, plumbing and energy demands, you want a home that works invisibly. And that’s where NEST comes in.

AS WELL AS NEW HOMES, NEST RETROFIT LEADING EDGE SOLUTIONS INTO EXISTING BUILDINGS. Iron hands, velvet gloves. Take a bathroom, for example. We remodel and rework. We create spaces upwards, downwards and outwards. We integrate new technology, such as steam rooms and jacuzzis, showers and tubs. And we address every lighting, electrical and plumbing requirement in an invisible, integrated solution. But in every case, we’re not working on a ‘site’. We’re in someone’s home or ofice, which has been created with love, care and a considerable investment . NEST is a specialist in treading softly. They know how to achieve major construction and maintenance tasks with the utmost respect for their surroundings. They can also futureproof their work, so that any further maintenance or upgrades can be accomplished with minimal disruption.

These matchless materials can be crafted and fashioned to create bespoke doors, wall coverings and individual pieces such as lighting and furniture. MUSTIQUE

Villa: Opium

PRIVATE LABEL WORLDWIDE, A GLOBAL TRAVEL SPECIALIST WITH THE KEY TO SOME VERY SPECIAL PROPERTIES YOU WON’T FIND ANYWHERE ELSE

PRIVATE LABEL WORLDWIDE

Villa: Sheherezade House

There are some places on earth that are so special, their secret must be jealously guarded.

Over the years, it has cast its spell on everyone from royalty, dignitaries and high profile celebrities but it is the charm of the island’s friendliness and special community spirit that takes families back year after year to share precious time together. And unlike many of the world’s most glamorous destinations, Mustique has a very dependable safeguard – the island is privately owned and protected by the owners themselves. Naturally they want to preserve it as the ultimate place to live and this guarantees it to be an unrivalled place to visit. With its exclusive collection of private residences available for weekly rental, luxury villa living is the ultimate essence of Mustique. Choose from an extraordinary array of architectural styles and interior designs, add private pools and sundecks, verandas with breathtaking views, every comfort of your desire and you have the perfect venue for memorable holidays and special occasions. Such an exceptional destination requires an equally exclusive office to represent it. The island’s owners (the Mustique Company), duly appointed Private Label Worldwide to undertake the role, an arrangement that has continued for some 20 years.

Villa: Hummingbird

The island of Mustique is just such a place. One of the unspoilt Grenadine Islands, Mustique covers just 1400 acres and around 500 (very lucky) people live there. It is also home to protected coral reefs, a variety of wildlife and the kind of beaches that only seem to exist in movies.

It is no surprise then, that Private Label has an unrivalled knowledge of the island. They are also quick to point out that a paradise on earth is not, in itself, sufficient to create the superlative holiday. What is also essential is an instinctive warmth of welcome, coupled with uncompromised levels of service from truly dedicated local staff.

“Will that be all?” Indeed, no less a body than the Guild of Professional English Butlers pays a visit to Mustique each year to train and elevate local butlers to the highest echelons of service. The goal is to maintain the outstanding service levels but never compromising on the engaging warmth that is so much part of Mustique’s magic. Private Label’s success is rooted in a combination of strengths including exquisite taste, personal experience and a contacts book that must be the envy of their competitors. Theirs is a true concierge service; quite apart from finding you the perfect villa (which they can describe in infinite detail because they have been there), they will take care of everything from a spa booking or private plane transfer to organising your perfect dinner party in some of the most stunning villas in the world.

A world apart Private Label Worldwide personally knows other exquisite islands, private villas and unique holiday experiences around the world – in little known places that offer their own special magic and exceptional character.

Design on a whole new plane UBER seeks out the best in design - Emirates Airbus A380

To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive... Robert Louis Stevenson

EMIRATES

The awesome sight of the imposing Emirates Airbus A380 came to Manchester in September. But it’s inside the aircraft that the story really unfolds.

for a cocktail in the lounge. Everything is designed to feel less like flying, and more like whiling away the hours in a particularly fine hotel.

“To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive...” So said Robert Louis Stevenson, on the art of travelling. Today his perceptive thought may have particular resonance as you settle back in the Emirates Airbus A380. Because this is not just a remarkable aircraft: it has been designed with every creature comfort you can imagine. (And many you can’t.)

Each cabin even features an ingenious mood lighting concept which counters jet lag: a starlit sky at night that alters progressively to reflect the time of your destination.

This is the aircraft where First Class passengers travel in one of 14 private suites, with seats that convert into fully flat beds. Inside your suite is a personal mini bar and an electrically operated privacy divider. You can even refresh yourself with a pre-dinner shower, before strolling up to meet friends

Even in Economy Class, you have over 1,200 channels of in-flight entertainment, including 100 games and 190 movie channels. Or you can pick up your personal handset and call anyone in the world, from 40,000ft up in the air. Design serves many purposes, practical and emotional. In the Emirates A380, it scales new heights. There’ s carpentry. And there’ s Woodscope.

Images supplied by Sensory International and reproduced by kind permission of Ged Mason of GGM Properties (Adamson House).

When it comes to beautifully crafted, natural wood. Anything else would go against the grain.

In an age when technology has brought us so many options in new materials – one of the most exciting is as old as the planet itself.

Natural wood plays a role that no other material can ever emulate. Its essential beauty lends a warmth and timeless elegance which we return to time and again. Its possibilities are endless.

Move in better circles This intriguing entrance hall was designed as a cylindrical area. This clearly meant that the door architrave was not going to be a stock item; it demanded a bespoke solution, built into the curvature of the walls. It flows seamlessly with the shape of the entrance hall yet it houses a door that’s straight-edged, for functional reasons. Woodscope’s craftsmen were guided by UBER’s initial design sketch (see above, right) to achieve this elegant and practical result.

UBERLIFESTYLE.COM • 0845 0773280

But as designers we also know that, for all its simplicity, beautiful wood demands exceptional craftsmanship. And this is where Woodscope comes in: their team combines old-fashioned skills and knowledge with a passion for breaking new ground.

Here, we show you some of the design challenges we posed to Woodscope on a recent project at Adamson House. UBER gave this bijou apartment of 900 sq.ft. a true sense of theatre and drama, designed in the knowledge that Woodscope’s team can plan, make and execute to even the most rigorous demands.

This bespoke nine-panel wall (pictured below right) includes a moveable central panel to reveal a movie screen.

Invisible door closed

This photo shows the mirrored secret door when closed providing a seamless wall and sense of space to the lobby entrance area.

Invisible door open

Concealed Door

The secret bathroom The lobby has a secret mirrored door which leads from the space to the bathroom. This answered Building Control’s requirements for a second means of escape from the apartment out to the entrance hall. It also meant that guests could access the bathroom from the main reception room without going through the bedroom. However, making the door ‘invisible’ demanded a highly intricate set of angles. We solved this through a cleverly concealed Jib hinge in the door mechanism. The door therefore shuts lush with the mirrored entrance hall (top), creating a secret entrance – and an uninterrupted space for the lobby.

A tasteful touch This beautifully executed solid wood cabinet (pictured above) is designed with multipurpose functions. Not only does it house and conceal the large format HD projector, but also serves as a drinks cabinet, display area and a leather inished writing desk. The diagram (left) shows another unique feature which we built into the cabinetry: a hidden ‘wine presenter’. Two bottles are offered by this clever holder, concealed in the drawer door itself.

ARTE INTERNATIONAL, CARAPACE WALLPAPER Available in store at UBER

UBERLIFESTYLE.COM • 0845 0773280

HASN’T THE WORLD HAD ENOUGH OF ‘WALLPAPER’ WALLPAPER? THE BLAND AND THE BORING? UBER SEARCHES THE WORLD FOR NEW CONCEPTS THAT WILL GRACE YOUR WALLS WITH TOTAL INDIVIDUALITY AND STYLE. SUCH AS THE FABULOUS CARAPACE WALLCOVERINGS FROM ARTE.

Have you ever thought how Nature covers and packages herself? Whether for overt display, subtle camoulage and every degree in between, the natural world is a rich source of inspiration.

Arte’s Carapace Collection takes its lead from Nature’s skins, textures and colours. But more than that: they have melded the look and feel of plants, minerals and animal life with textures and colours of other elements. The result is a surreal magic. Carapace comprises three different textures. Gator is a creative new take on the look and texture of crocodile skin. Moire inds extraordinary inspiration in ish scales and reptile skins. And Skin evokes the texture of leaves and tree bark, and the hides of elephants and rhinos. As for colour...it’s in the eye of the beholder. Each wallcovering has an iridescent shimmer which changes with the angle: at one moment, you might see silver, gold or zinc. The next, cuprum, brass, rust or platinum. With Carapace, your walls live.

In a samey, globalised world, there are some who yearn for individuality and passion. While the world zigs, they zag. If this sounds like you, you’re among friends at UBER. Our mission is to bring together the unique and the different; the brave and the quirky; the beautiful and the masterful. And to answer every design need, whether you’re looking for a fresh take on an entire home; to a new ambience for a dining room, sitting room or study; or simply a cushion to adorn a favourite chair. This ininite passion for style extends to the tiniest detail. Indeed, where others see a minor accessory, we see a design opportunity. For example, we source our own custom-made curtain tassels, sparkling with Swarovski crystals, as well as tiebacks, braids, ropes and fringes.

The Casa-style casually combines modernrustic country home style and elegant citylife. All articles are surprisingly natural from their look and also with a pleasant feel.

We also scour the world’s designers for luxuriously upholstered headboards that make a statement in any master bedroom. We commission throws, cushions, covers and vallances that complement and complete. We panel walls in sumptuous upholstery, and create bathrooms ranging from calm sanctuaries to invigorating spas. All with passion, experience - and the belief there is no such thing as a ‘small’ detail.

Why not pop into our showroom to see the vast array of samples and accessories just waiting to inspire you.
