Welcome to the 4th annual Outlaw ATV Jamboree. We are excited to share our trails with you and hope that you find something that you enjoy here in the Uintah Basin. We have a complete schedule of events and hope that you can join in on as many as you would like. We were able to get approval from the Ashley National Forest office to guide some trails on the mountain this year, and we thank them for that. So whether you want to enjoy the desert and see old ghost towns or spend some time on the cool mountain, among the pines, we think that you have picked the right jamboree to attend. For more information contact the Uintah County Travel and Tourism office at 1-800-477-5558 or local 435-789-6932

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What Are The Rules For Riding An OHV/ATV On Town Streets And County Roads?
Vernal City has graciously agreed to let our guests ride in Vernal City limits for this weekend. So please obey all street laws and signs. This provides you the opportunity to visit the local businesses in town without having to unhook your vehicle from your trailer. Are there any width restrictions on the trails? All of the trails that we are guiding have no width restrictions, so everyone can enjoy them. Do I have to go on a guided ride? No, you don’t have to go on a guided ride. There are many trails that we aren’t guiding this year but there are maps available for you to follow. Ask a guide to help download the maps if you decide to take that trail. What Should I Take On The Ride? Camera, drinking water, lunch, snacks, sunscreen, bandana – to protect face from dust, drinks, handiwipes – optional, bug spray, dress in layers, as the mountain can still be a little chilly this time of year, scavenger hunt paper, pen/pencil. Make sure you gas your machine and vehicles up before we leave. Is Lunch Provided? 4 Brothers Pizza has generously offered to provide sack lunches for a nominal fee. Each lunch will consist of a sandwich of your choosing, chips, drink and a cookie. They will be at registration each morning to take orders for the next day. This service will be available all three mornings. Where do we meet each morning? Each morning we will meet at the Western Park located at 302 East 200 South in Vernal. Look for the banners directing the way. When do the rides leave? All rides will leave Western Park, every morning, at 8:30 a.m. Is it too late to sign up? Absolutely not, go to Oulawatvjam.com to sign up now. It is first come, first serve so sign up early to get the rides you would like. Although all of them are nice you may have one that you particularly want to go on.

Dinosaur National Monument Designated as an International Dark Sky Park Story By Chelsea Deets With the recent addition of Dinosaur National Monument to The International Dark Skies Places Program, this means there are currently three locations in the Basin designated as dark sky parks. With the continued urban expansion, it is becoming harder and harder to observe the true majesty of the night sky. Buildings, street lamps, and car headlights fill the sky with what has been termed as light pollution. The light is so bright that many of the dimmer stars can no longer be seen by the naked eye through the SEE DARK SKIES on Page 21

Rider participation continues to grow for Outlaw ATV Jamboree Story By Derek Hopper dhopper@ubmedia.biz
The annual Outlaw ATV Jamboree continues to grow each year, with the 2018 Jamboree drawing more than 150 machines, with many having multiple riders. Organizers hope to draw more than 200 machines to this year’s event. During the first year in 2016, the jamboree had 35 machines and probably half of those were local riders. In 2017, the event had 100 plus machines there by tripling the number in only one year. The Jamboree had riders from Colorado, the Wasatch Front, Idaho, Arizona and Kansas. “This year, we hope to draw
more than 200 machines and possible 300 riders,” Outlaw ATV Jamboree volunteer Carlene Slaugh said. Advertising and word of mouth are two primary reasons participation in the Jamboree continues to grow. “I was pleasantly surprised with the numbers and that jamboree participation has grown so quickly,” Outlaw ATV Jamboree volunteer Travis Slaugh said. “We had a lot of people sign up the last couple of weeks. We had up to 30 riders per trail last year. Just as last year, we are limiting each ride to 15 – 20 machines to make it an enjoyable experience for everyone.” The Outlaw ATV Jamboree
is set for May 30 - June 1, the jamboree includes a selection of 11 trails from throughout the Basin. Rides will start at 8:30 a.m. daily. All rides start at Western Park. The cost is $50 per person, which includes rides for all three days, two breakfasts, two dinners, and a commemorative T-shirt. “We believe this is a good price for the event,” Travis said. “We have compared to other Jamborees within the region and they are charging $75 or more per rider.” The event will feature a social on Friday night, May 31, to be held at the Buckskin Hills Complex just outside of Vernal and a BBQ dinner, Saturday
night, June 1, with entertainment at Naples City Park, immediately followed by at OHV Parade down main street and a night ride over Asphalt Ridge. Registration is from 6-9 p.m. at Western Park on Wednesday, May 29, and again Friday and Saturday mornings from 6:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. As of May 4, there were 50 machines registered with four weeks left. “We hope to have more than 200 machines,” Carlene said. There are 20 or more machines who are trail leaders and sweepers for the different trails. “These people are all volunSEE PARTICIPATION on Page 21

Local officials support Outlaw ATV Jamboree Story By Bruce Tippets btippets@ubmedia.biz
Uintah County Commissioner Brad Horrocks is 100 percent behind supporting the annual Outlaw ATV Jamboree as he knows it’s a perfect opportunity to showcase all the trails in the area. This year’s jamboree is slated for May 30-June 1 in Vernal. “I’m really excited to be a part of the jamboree,” Horrocks said. “I think there is no end what we can do. I think the opportunity we have people out here to ride our existing trails and we are getting trail lines put together to make up different trails where people can come back on their own and ride.” Horrocks went down to the Richfield jamboree to get a few ideas for the Vernal jamboree. “We are looking to model what they have down there,” Horrocks added. “I think that it’s going to be a great deal for Uintah County in the next two to five years. It’s already a big deal. We are really pushing forward on this hard. We have a tremendous area to see and what we have here is amazing.” Horrocks has invited all of the commissioners from around the state to participate in the jamboree. “I hope to get half a dozen or a dozen of them to come out and see our county,” Horrocks explained. “The ATV business is the biggest recreation busi-
ness in the state of Utah. ” Vernal City Mayor Doug Hammond is a regular participate in the Outlaw ATV Jamboree. Hammond has a side-by-side that he takes on the different trails that are available. “I like it just because you get to see the country you don’t get to normally see,” Hammond explained. Hammond went on the John Taylor Loop and the Red Mountain Trail in 2018. On the Red Mountain Trail, riders start at Docks Beach, winding through cedars and ponderosa pines up a steep stretch of sandstone slick rock to the top of Red Mountain. Near the top the riders will see a historic log cabin and amazing views of Ashley Valley and the surrounding mountains. The trial is narrow and challenging in places. The length is 20 miles and the trail is for expert riders. “Red Mountain was exciting because it’s the toughest trail we have,” Hammond said. “The rock ledges make it difficult. You drive up rock ledges and you come down rock ledges. It’s really something else. I had before.” In the John Taylor Loop, Hammond was able to explore the Ashley National Forest along the Red Cloud Loop Scenic Byway. “The John Taylor Loop was unbelievable,” Hammond said. everyone and make sure everyone will make it down the trail,” Brandon added. The Barnes have picked to help with the Rector/Dragon Loop, the Outlaw Range Ride and the Butch Cassidy Trail. “We personally know all of the people who run the jamboree,” Brandon added. “We try to be regulars in the Vernal area.” Alton Tolson from Perry, Utah, has attended the jamboree the last few years and is already signed up for the one this year. “It's just a friendly environment,” Tolson said. “”We like the folks there. We go to some other jamborees that are just huge. This one isn't so big. We like the area around the Flaming George area.” Tolson participates in the TriState Jamboree in Hurricane.
“The Hurricane is a little bit big,” Tolson explained. “The one in Hurricane is a lot of fun, but we had 900 people there and 450 ATVs this year. That is a lot of people.” Tolson will be going on the Josie Morris Trail and John Taylor Loop along with a third one. In the John Taylor Loop, the riders will explore the Ashley National Forest along the Red Cloud Loop Scenic byway. The riders climb to the top of Dyer Mountain Mine and drop into Iron Springs past Big Brush Creek Cave and enjoy views of wildlife. “We don't want to get too many people,” Tolson said. “We don't run into very many people when we are on the trails there in Vernal. The ATV Jamboree is a lot of fun. We look forward do doing it every year.” For more information on all the rides available people may visit www.outlawatvjam.com.

has had a side-by-side for the past five years. This past year Hammond participated in the Richfield ATV Jamboree. “We went to the top of Monroe Mountain during the jamboree and that was fun,” Hammond added. “The Richfield and the Vernal Jamborees are pretty equal. They are all so different because you are seeing country you have never seen from a pickup windshield.” The cost for the jamboree is $50 per person or $25 under 18-years-old. “I think that it’s very important,” Hammond said. “To have 100 ATVs running on that weekend will bring money for
hotels and other things.” The registration includes a registration bag, one jamboree t-shirt, and tickets for a gun drawing along with two breakfasts and two dinners. “It’s really an enjoyable time,” he added. “The price is affordable.” People may register at www. outlawatvjam.com or call 1-800477-5558 for more information.

Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Powell Expedition Submitted Story The U.S. Geological Survey and partnering organizations are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Powell Expedition, an exploration of the Green and Colorado Rivers that ended in the Grand Canyon. Led by scientist and Civil War amputee John Wesley Powell, a team of 10 men in four small wooden boats departed Green River Wyoming on May 24, 1869. Only six men and two boats completed the 95-day journey, but the expedition succeeded in recording some of
the earliest known maps, data, topographic measurements, geology, and local Native American culture, for much of the treacherous Colorado River that runs through modern-day Grand Canyon National Park. Powell later became the second director of the U.S. Geological Survey as well as the U.S. Commissioner of Indian Affairs, the first director of the Bureau of Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution, and a co-founder of the National Geographic Society. (photo and information Courtesy of the U.S. Geological Survey)
On Saturday, June 1, the BLM will be hosting John Jarvie fest. They will have special speakers; food will be available for purchase, old time demonstrations, and reenactments. The Outlaw ATV jamboree will be offering two start times for the ride on this day as we expect a large group with this special event. This is part of the John Wesley Powell 150th Celebration.

teers and include members of the local URAT (Uintah Riders All-Terrain) and without them this event would not happen,” Carlene said. “They have spent countless hours proofing trails, cleaning up garbage and making sure that the visitors have a great time.” The goal for the jamboree is to have people come back and visit the Uintah Basin to explore on their own. “This event brings people

haze of ambient light. The International Dark Skies Places Program, founded in 2001, seeks to preserve places where the sky is darkest so that people can truly see the magnificence of the Milky Way. “Visitors from around the world are finding that star-
together to take in the great scenery the Basin has to offer. Even many local residents haven’t been on many of the trails we have scheduled,” Carlene said. “You can go 30 miles in any direction and enjoy different terrain and sites to see.” Carlene said the jamboree was fortunate to get the approval from the Ashley National Forest Office, since some trails include mountain rides. “A lot of folks requested to go on the mountain through our surveys we gave them at the end of jamboree last year,” Carlene said.
Carlene and Travis Slaugh had the opportunity to see the Wagon Wheel in Meeker, Colorado, last year and the third annual rally in Rangely, Colorado, last week, to get a taste of what different ATV jamborees are like around the area. “We learned something from both events that will help us put on a better event this year,” Carlene said. “From the Rangely event, we brought back that all government entities need to be involved to make it a success. In Rangely, their Chamber of Commerce, the travel and tourism, eco-
nomic development, commissioners, search and rescue were all there participating and helping in one way or another. It was very impressive to see that they were working together as a community instead of against.” In Meeker, the Slaughs liked how they let their visitors with the ATV rally ride on local streets. The last couple of years we have received permission from local municipalities to allow riders to operate their machines on local roads.
filled skies at Dinosaur are often as novel and awe-inspiring as fossil-filled rocks,” says Park Ranger Sonya Popelka. Whether visitors are avid campers enjoying the sky on their own terms or would like a guided night hike in a park setting, the protected area makes for spectacular stargazing. The regular line-up of night sky programs at Dinosaur from June 24 through September
13 includes Stargazing with Telescopes, Night Sky for the Naked Eye, Night Hikes Under Moonlight, and the annual Skies Over Dinosaur Astronomy Festival. Details for these and other programs can be found on the Guided Tours and Calendar of Events pages on the monument’s website www. nps.gov/dino. Dark sky viewing may also be enjoyed at Steinaker State
Park, which is located approximately five miles north of Vernal to the west of Hwy 191, and Red Fleet State Park, which is approximately ten miles north of Vernal to the East of Hwy 191. All three of these locations offer fantastic views of the night sky.
