USU-Uintah Basin Interim Executive Director Statement Utah State University (USU) Uintah Basin continues to provide the community with the opportunity to achieve new milestones in their lives. The campuses reputation continues to grow, and with the addition of support programs and the great success of graduates, more students are enrolling. Student enrollment increased from 461 in 2017 to 482 in 2018 and we’ve continued to see increases this spring. We are also experiencing changes in our regional economic conditions. The region’s unemployment has continued to drop for three years in a row: 9.2% (2016), 7.1% (2017), 4.6% (2018), 4.3% (February 2019) and we are pleased to see that members of the community are still pursuing higher education. The USU Uintah Basin faculty and other USU faculty offering broadcast and online courses create environments where all can feel valued and welcome no matter their unique background. This fall, we plan on welcoming new faculty in business and nursing. One of USU Uintah Basin’s primary goals is to provide students with work experience before they graduate so they can apply what they learn in their majors as soon as possible. This hands-on experience pays off in the long run, opening new career opportunities to the vast majority of students. Research continues to be a significant push for USU Uintah Basin, and in the 2018-19 academic year, the campus received a total of $12 million in research grants and contracts. The research completed at the campus by both students and faculty makes impacts on the local economy. USU’s Bingham Research Center conducted research that led to a marginal, rather than moderate, ozone designation for the Uintah Basin by the Environmental Protection Agency. The result will be fewer regulatory measures for the local oil industry that would have proven costly. A large part of our student’s success, and the institution’s research accomplishments, are possible thanks to the generous donations of individuals and organizations that provide student scholarships. USU Uintah Basin held its second annual Perfect Swing Golf Tournament last Fall and raised over $13,500 for the USU Advisory Board Community Scholarship. These donations help make higher education more accessible to those who otherwise would not be able to meet the financial requirements. We are in the planning stages for our third tournament in August in conjunction with the Uintah Basin Energy Summit. We hope to see you there. USU Uintah Basin serves the Manila, Roosevelt, and Vernal communities as Utah’s land grant institution. Without local support, we would not be able to make such a tremendous impact for each of our students. We are grateful for the blue-blooded Aggies in the Basin and wish future success to this year’s graduating class. Go Aggies!

James Y. Taylor Executive Director Utah State University-Uintah Basin
