Laubs nab title with giant size pumpkins Bruce Tippets
btippets@ubmedia.biz
Ralph and Juana Laub finished first and second on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017, at the Harvest 2017 Bash after their pumpkins weighed a massive 1,326.5 pounds and 1,314.0 pounds respectively, bringing the title back to the Uintah Basin. Ralph’s pumpkin edged out Juana’s for the title at Pawnee City, Nebraska. “We are excited,” Juana Laub said on Tuesday after making it back to Vernal. “It doesn’t matter if he wins or if I win. We are a couple working together and bringing the title to Vernal to be No. 1 and No. 2.” The Laubs were expecting their pumpkins to be over 1,300 pounds. “We have a pretty good idea with the measuring we do,” Juana Laub said. “We were pretty close to what we thought that it was going to be. We
are happy with the results.” The pumpkins set their personal best records. The couple belongs to the Utah Giant Pumpkins Growers and that club is world wide. The Laubs have been growing giant pumpkins for the last seven years. “We just never know what the outcome is until you put them in the weights,” Juana Laub said. Other competitors in Nebraska came from Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska. “I didn’t pay attention to third-place because I was so excited,” Juana Laub said. “I think the third one was 800 pounds.” The pair aren’t new to the pumpkin competition. The Laubs have been going pumpkins for the last seven years with their mentors being Lee and Dori Perry. “The people were very happy to see us there,” Juana Laub said. “They were very surprised we came
from so far away. They were very pleasant and they invited us back. They had a lot of questions on how we grew our pumpkins so big. They want to have seeds from us. They want to have more input on how we grow in order to implement them into our patch.” The couple couldn’t believe what the reaction was by other people driving, getting gas or eating on the way back from the pumpkin competition. “It was magnificent coming back home,” Juana Laub said. “You should have seen the peoples eyes and the thumbs up they were giving us because they haven’t seen such a giant pumpkin. They were taking videos of our pumpkins. Every time that we stopped for gas or eat, people wanted to take photos of the pumpkins and touch them.” The couple is planning on putting the
Operation Christmas Child Collection Week Hundreds of Vernal residents will transform empty shoeboxes into gifts filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items Nov. 13-20. Vernal volunteers are opening a site to serve as a drop-off location for shoebox gifts. The gifts will then be deliv-
ered around the world by the Samaritan’s Purse project Operation Christmas Child to children who are living in the midst of poverty, war, disease or natural disaster. Additional information is below my signature. For a complete list of drop-off loca-
tions, searchable by zip code, visit samaritanspurse.org/occ. SIf you would like to speak with a site coordinator or local representative about this upcoming project, please contact: Tonya Craven 435-621-2280 Chris Daggett

School District responds to Drollinger complaint Liberty Best
lbest@ubmedia.biz
Uintah School District filed an answer to James Drollinger’s complaint filed with Uintah County 8th District Court regarding an alleged violation to the Utah Open and Public Meetings Act. The district’s first
defense in their answer document was that Drollinger failed to state a claim of action upon which relief can be granted, for reasons including, but not limited to, inapplicability of the Open and Public Meetings act to the separate budget hearing notice and the district’s lack of standing to request voiding of an
act under the Open and Public Meetings Act. The district denies paragraph four of the complaint because of the creation of causes of action under the Open and Public Meetings Act does not confer jurisdiction on the court. The district admits that the court has subject matter jurisdiction, accord-

pumpkins out of the patch. Juana Laub wanted to thank Terry Hadlock, Heather from Jensen Nursery, Kristin Anderson, son George Laub, Butch Boren, Lee Perry along with Dori and Mikie Wilkins for all the help they did for the pumpkins. “We enjoy bringing similes to people when they get to see this massive giant pumpkins,” Juana Laub said.

abide by the Open and Public Meetings act. “In meeting to adopt a budget and make appropriations, they must comply with the Open and Public Meetings Act and other legal requirements.” The district admitted that the hearing was published in the newspaper on or about May 30, 2017, but deny that the notice was published on the Utah Public Notice Website at that time. The complaint stated that the notice published did not include the meeting agenda and did not list the proposed budget under an agenda item.
In response the district said they admit that the notice of the budget hearing published on the Utah Public Notice Website on May 18, 2017 and in the newspaper on May 30, 2017, did not include a meeting agenda. “The defendants deny that providing an agenda with this notice was required by Utah Code 53-19102(3) or other law and deny that the defendants failed to provide a meeting agenda with the Open and Public Meetings Act notice that it provided for the June 20, 2017, meeting of the Board of Education at which the budget hearing was conducted,” the answer filed reads. The answer also
said, in response to the complaint stating that the budget was put in with regular agenda items, the district admits they conducted the required public hearing regarding the proposed budget and addressed other business as well during the June 20, 2017, meeting of the Board of Education. The answer said the public hearing regarding the proposed budget was conducted during the meeting at the time and in the sequence which the agenda indicated that public comment would be received during the meeting. The third defense of the answer document states that the district denies each and every allegation contained
in the complaint not otherwise specifically mentioned. The answer also states that Drollinger’s action against the district is without merit AMIYA BAILEY of Rashelle Boren and Skyler and not brought in , daughterNorah Rae Hague Bailey, born August 28, 2017.
