he first annual UBTech Career Fair offered prospective students a chance to talk with instructors in a plethora of fields about what they can expect from studying in that field. The one on one experience allowed prospective students the opportunity to get a feel for how life would be pursuing that field. High school students and nontraditional students packed the Vernal UBTech campus on Jan. 18 with the intention of bettering their lives and doing so through education. Instructors eagerly talked with the prospective students in a vibrant atmosphere that was filled with optimism and hope for future studies. A panel of regional professionals lined the stage for a discussion, offering some insight as to what they and their companies are looking for from prospective employees. Vice President of Development and Marketing, Bob Peterson, introduced the panel of professional leaders. “We invited them here to discuss employment needs, trends, what they’re looking for and the value of education,” Peterson said. “They represent the workforce. They’re here to side with UBTech in demonstrating what needs they’re really looking for and to demonstrate that UBTech provides a great source of instruction and education that fits a lot of their needs.” Joel Brown, director of the Vernal Chamber of Commerce, was the moderator of the discussion and asked the panel a series of “tough questions” as Peterson put it. Brown pointed out
the fact to the crowd that anyone from the Uintah Basin is eligible for a scholarship to attend UBTech, before asking the panel the first question of the night. “Describe the kind of person that you want to hire for your organization,” Brown asked the panel. David Palacios from Savage Trucking answered first, stating that his organization looks for a Class A CDL with a doubles and triples endorsement, as well as a Hazmat endorsement. Palacios pointed out the fact that all those certifications can be acquired at UBTech. UBTech student of the Year, Faith Burk talked to the crowd about her first day at UBTech. “As a student, I remember my first day at UBTech, they told us, ‘you are on a ninemonth job interview,’” Burk said. “So when you listen to what the industry partners want, that begins in school. UBTech gives you those opportunities like in nursing they have a class presidency. You can try for the student of the year if you want some leadership opportunities and abilities to practice speaking and things like that. UBTech really gets you started day one to prepare for that future job.” A common theme the panel expressed is the need for their employees to understand some of the basic elements of technology. “If you noticed, all of the other panelists mentioned technology in some form or another,” Kirk Bostick of Spectra said. The first annual event will be back next year at the Vernal and Roosevelt campus’ for anyone interested in attending next year to learn more about exciting career opportunities.

tah House of Representative member Scott Chew walks to the podium of the Grace Event Center in Roosevelt before several hundred people gathered at the Uinta Basin Water Summit. Chew is about to address a crowd consisting of county commissioners, farmers and Basin citizens. Most of them have been there since 8 a.m. that morning, listening to presentations from some of the leading names in water conservation efforts across the state. Considering the lack of moisture this winter, most here k n o w th a t w at e r conservation efforts are critical to almost every component of our lives. Farmers are there in droves, representing the agricultural sector. Some of the farmers and ranchers are sitting next to or across from representatives such as Chew, who will be on the front-line of many water issues facing the state. Chew begins to
talk about what he expects from the upcoming legislative session which he will be a part of this week in Salt Lake City. “One thing I’ve learned about being in the legislature, it’s trying to predict whats going to go on in the incoming session is like trying to figure out where the coyote is going to show up when he runs out of the sheep herd,” Chew said. “You never know which end of the draw he’s coming out on, and that’s exactly how it is in the legislature.” Chew went on to explain that last year in the session, there were 1,200 bills and that this year there are over 1,700. One issue that is guaranteed to be covered in the session is water. According to Chew, there will be 50 bills that mention water in them. Of those 50 bills, eight of them are directly addressing water use and conservation. “Last year at this same time, nobody was even worried about water,” Chew said in an interview with the Express. “This year it’s a lot more in the spotlight. I’m pleased
that the reservoirs around the state, except Steinaker and Red Fleet are actually fuller than they normally are at this time of year. Of course, we know that’s because of what they were able to accumulate last year.” Air and water are always topics that are discussed and brought into bills during the legislative session, but one of the things the Wasatch Front fails to understand, according to Chew, is just where all their water comes from. “I’d say 80 percent of our state population doesn’t even give that a thought,” Chew said. “They’re not aware of the infrastructure and a lot of it is getting old and its got to be taken care of. I think some people are being more aware, but the general public is still just turning on their faucet and water comes out and they don’t give it a second thought.” Representative Chew finished his speech to the crowd of citizens and officials that will all face the same water issues in the coming years. They all gave him a resounding applause as he finished with a joke
that brought about a collective laugh. The joke was lighthearted and made the subject more exciting but as Duchesne County Chamber of Commerce Director, Irene Hansen said, SEE SUMMITT on Page 6

One of the top ten best small towns for family vacations by
Ryan Collins
Not long ago, Vernal was named by the Travel Channel as one of the 10 great small towns for big vacations. Anybody who enjoys the recreational opportunities afforded here, clearly understands why Vernal is ranked in the top ten. “As the gateway to Dinosaur National Monument, Vernal, Utah proudly claims its title of Dinosaurland. “It really inspires us to be one of those people who plant seeds that a harvest will be reaped 20 years from now or 30. It might be until our greatgrandchildren before we see some of the things that are done in planting put into
Flaming Gorge National Recreational Area, camp and cliff dive at Steinaker State Park and Red Fleet State Park, and horseback ride, fish, mountain bike or just relax at Red Canyon Lodge,” Steve Larese of the Travel Channel wrote of Vernal. The outdoor opportunities in the Basin-for even the most jaded enthusiasts--are there for the taking. The rare recognition from the Travel Channel is worth its weight in gold for tourism. The recognition is
there as well as the places to draw people far and near. It remains to be seen just how many tourists the top 10 ranking will bring, but the ranking certainly won’t hurt in that department. There are still hidden recreational gems known and cherished by locals and sought out by “tourists” such as myself. Lately, I’ve been trying to explore as much as possible, hitting all the spots
effect.” As with the lack of moisture this winter so far, it’s not about the short term when it comes to water, it’s about the long-term. The Uinta Basin Water Summit covered many of the issues facing us directly and indirectly, making a concerted effort to look to the future and how our actions today will affect
those in the future. The Uinta Basin Water Summit will take place again next year in Vernal and the issues facing us this year may be completely different from what awaits us next year. But as Hansen put it, the seeds we sow today will reap a harvest down the line.

that make the Basin unique and full of history--with a twoyear-old. Most of the adventures are spent with him not batting an eye to the areas we visit, but the hope is that he gets out of the house and enjoys some quality time doing something other than watching Despicable Me thousands of times. Last weekend we made a trip to Moonshine Arch in the early
afternoon, following the signs and wondering all the while where the arch was and if we’d gone the wrong way. It wasn’t until we came up to that final stretch where it comes into view all at once that we knew we had gone the right way. The meandering and searching for old signs to signify we were going the correct way was worth it to me and just being able to go outdoors in January was icing on the cake. When we arrived, there wasn’t a soul at the impressive arch,
until groups of people started flowing in after us in droves. It’s places like Moonshine Arch that helped make Vernal reach the top 10 ranking and it’s something to be proud of and hang our hats on. Projects like the Trails Plan will enhance these cherished sights and make them all the more accessible to the general public. Receiving a ranking like this is something to be proud of. Moonshine Arch (above) is a perfect day trip for anyone looking to get out of the house, especially if it’s a 40 degree day in January with sunshine.
Utah economic outlook & public policy summit SALT LAKE CITY, UT – The Salt Lake Chamber, Utah’s largest and longest-standing statewide business association, held the Utah Economic Outlook & Public Policy Summit, in partnership with the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute, to preview the business community’s priorities for the upcoming 2018 General Legislative Session. The Utah Economic Outlook & Public Policy Summit is the state’s premier economic forecasting and public policy event.
This year, the Salt Lake Chamber was honored to have Governor Mitt Romney give the keynote address. In addition to learning about the Chamber’s legislative priorities, the nearly 900 business, policy and academic thought leaders in attendance also gained valuable insight on the future of Utah’s economy. “As Utah’s Business Leader, it’s critical that the Salt Lake Chamber provide a forum like this one to focus on the key issues impacting our economy and what

we as a business community can do to keep it moving forward,” said Lane Beattie, president and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber. “While Utah’s economy is the envy of the nation, it was not without collaboration and purposeful planning.”
