Highway 40 fire; semi-truck burns for nearly two hours

Drug Boom:

Part Two- Triggers By Ryan Collins ubmedia.biz

One of the hardest aspects of addiction for family members and those

A tanker hauling oil waste water caught fire yesterday on Highway 40 at mile marker 121, blocking traffic in both lanes, according to a press release from the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP). The Roosevelt Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire at 3:39 p.m. “Roosevelt fire was paged at 15:39 (3:39 p.m.),” Assistant Fire Chief, Nathan Goodrich said. “The fire was at Highway 40, just across from the store Junk In The Trunk at mile post 121. It was a semi truck pulling one of those little pup trailers and he was headed east

bound.” Goodrich said as the semi was headed down the hill as the pup trailer began to sway back and forth, eventually turning over. “It popped the axle off,” Goodrich said. “It ignited something from sliding down the road and started the truck on fire as well.” The oil waste water was burning at an extreme temperature, according to Goodrich. “Our fire attack was mostly defensive in cooling the trailers down so the fire would go out,” Goodrich added. “We used some class B foam on it to put it out to cool the tanks down so it would go out sooner.” The Roosevelt volunteer fire department was back at their station at 5:42 p.m. after combating the fire for nearly two hours. No injuries occurred in the accident.

tor at Northeastern Counseling Center, Robert Hall said. C That’s not to say that there are not preventative measures for adults. “There are some efforts with adults, like putting out collection sites at pharmacies to remind people to properly dispose of their pain pills,” Hall said. “There are a lot of prevention things going around, and I think they have positive effects, but we’re still going to have problems to deal with after the fact unfortunately.” Northeastern is one of the only counseling centers in the Basin and they do have medication available for their patients going through addiction treatment. “We do have medication assisted treatment,” Hall said. “Which for the opioids, would specifically include Suboxone.” Suboxone is a drug that helps alleviate pain for the user as well as addiction. “That’s a medication that can be used in conjunction with therapy,” Hall said. “We prescribe that, and there are a also a couple of medical providers in the community that also prescribe that medication.” Treating drug addiction with a drug may seem counterintuitive, but if you are court compelled to seek treatment for drug addiction, it is a means to an end. “A lot of those individuals, especially women, but not exclusively women, trauma plays a role in their substance abuse,” Hall said. If trauma is one of the main factors in addiction and addiction triggers and the court system also plays the role as a trigger in programs such as drug court, the obvious way to avoid addiction would be to avoid trauma of the court system as a whole. Treatment has to be specifically catered to the individual in order for that treatment to be successful, according to Hall. Trauma is something that happens in life, as well as addiction. Both must be treated in order to recover.

An addiction is completely unique to the individual and there is usually one universal to addiction problems, everybody is different in how they respond to addiction treatment. If addiction is looked at as an illness that can be treated, the entire process of rehabilitation and sentencing changes. “I’ve had people tell me that taking heroin is like having the warmest most comfortable blanket just wrapped around them,” Public Defender Lance Dean said. “And it gives you this nice little hug.” According to Dean, he gets many clients that are repeat offenders and eventually make their way to Drug Court. “What happens is that if somebody has a lot of drug history, and they get some new charges, there is drug court,” Dean said. “In my opinion, the only local treatment that is drug oriented for people with addiction is the drug court program, the Unitah County drug court program.” The Uintah County Drug court is held on Wednesdays at 7:30 a.m. by judge McClellan. The mission of the Uintah County Drug Court program is:

Merry Christmas from our team to yours. Thank you for your support, we couldn’t ask for better friends and neighbors.

“Our primary goal is to assist addicts in conquering addiction. Mike Davis went on lto breakdown revenue the city generated during 2017. Sales tax was the highest revenue generator in 2017, bringeing in $3,435,396. The highway tax was the hsecond highest revenue generator, making the city $1,231,658. The franchise tax came in as the third highest income for the eyear with $1,065,328. e Property tax, which was a topic of discussion as pointed out by a council member, was the eighth highest, making the city $369,896. The city listed 19 forms of incomes for the past year. “We’re seeing posietive signs in the ecosnomic reports and our sales taxes,” City Manager Quinn Bennion said. “So we’re being optimistic...It’s .a slow growth, but we are seeing some good asigns in the economy.” Compared to the 2016 sales tax revenue for the city, 2017 tax revenue was up $235,000 from last gyear. “We’re projecting that we’re going to be dprojecting a little bit rhigher sales tax coming in as the economy

It was decided during the meeting that all city employees will be receiving a $200 Christmas bonus. “I believe that we should give when we can,” councilman Bert Clark said. Although the city council was just discussing the budget prior to the agenda item of giving Christmas bonuses, the city gave what it could, echoing Clark’s sentiment. The City wrapped the meeting up and applauded several Boy Scouts who were in attendance and stayed through the entirety of the meeting. The next city council meeting will be held in town hall on the Dec. 20 and will be the last council meeting for mayor Norton.

Uintah’s Carson Talbot wins the 50-yard freestyle with Orem on Thursday night in a dual at the Uintah Community Center Pool.

Moments after the swimming dual with Orem on Thursday night at the Uintah Community Center Pool, Uintah High School senior captain Eric Brown was quick to point out his 200yard medley relay is currently sitting in the top 10 in the state. The top 16 relays qualify for the state meet. “It’s awesome,” Brown said. “I’m hoping it stays that way or it even gets better. It will give us a chance to go to state.” During the dual with Orem, the UHS medley relay team was made up of Landon, Jones, Kylon Mortenson, Brown and Shane Ashby. “Anytime that we can drop those times will help us secure those spots,” UHS head swim coach Wendy Harris said. “We have three boys fighting for spots in the A relays.” The four finished in second behind Orem with a time of 2:10.31. Brown said Uintah’s top medley relay team

includes Carson Talbot (backstroke), Troy Young (butterfly), Jason Valadez or Jones (freestyle) and Brown in the breaststroke leg. “We had a couple of personal records in the relay with Orem,” Brown said. Brown is one of the selected captains on the team. The team voted him into the role. He was surprised when he found out his captain position. Brown communicates with the coaches during the meets and practices. “It’s a lot of fun,” Brown said about his role. “I like working with the team. I’m one of the only three seniors on the team. The chances were pretty good.” Brown doesn’t have any complaints on how the season is progressing right now. “I have a few personal records,” Brown said. His standout event is in the 100-yard breaststroke. He has been doing the event for the past four years. “That is my favorite event,” Brown said. Brown’s set goal is to get the breaststroke under a 1:10. He has recorded a 1:11. Brown didn’t end up swimming the breaststroke event with Orem, but he was in plenty of other races for the Utes. “It will take a lot of hard work, and sticking with it,” Brown said.

Wishing you all the Merriest of Christmases & the Happiest of New Years

The dual with Orem hit the midway point of the season. In the team standings, the Uintah girls edged Orem 88-82.

Christmas is a great time for flowers!

“I think they are doing great,” Harris said. “For how small we are, I feel like we are competing well. The

kids are cutting their times.”

The Orem boys downed UHS 91-70. “We were pretty similar in size with Orem,” Harris said.

All the UHS girls relays are sitting in the top 15 in the state.

“The girls need to drop some time on their relays,” Harris said. “They need to push it. Last year, we didn’t even get to go. We are in a lot better position this year.”

Uintah’ss Celia Peterson, Kelli Cazier, Alma Winberg and Molly Kiever won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:15.28.

“I do change them, but our A relays are pretty set,” Harris said. “We keep changing the order, hoping maybe with one of them going first will make a difference. They just need to get their personal best times.”

Winberg won the 200-yard individual medley (2:35.70) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:19.70). Kiever claimed the 200-yard freestyle (2:17.05) Uintah’s Adalie Blackburn finished first in the 100-yard freestyle (1:06.38).

Young finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:05.15) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.03). Valadez added a top spot in the 100-yard freestyle (58.32).

Talbot, Jones, Valadez, and Young had the fastest time in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:47.48). The same four were first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:39.96). Talbot was first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.83) and the 50yard freestyle (23.36).

With less than a minute left in regulation, Uintah’s Camry Myers dived after the basketball, forcing an intense scramble with the Union players on Friday night at Uintah High School. Despite the hustle effort put in by the Uintah Lady Utes, the Union Cougars came away with a 50-36 victory. Just seven days ago, Uintah came up with a 55-43 win against Union during the annual Shanon Johnson Basketball Classic. “It’s always a good game with Union,” UHS head coach Kristy Putnam said after the tournament. “I like playing them because we are intense and they are intense.” The win by Union marked the last meeting between the schools less than 30 miles apart. Uintah is playing in the 4A division this winter and Union is in 3A. Uintah stands at 3-3 on the season and the loss completed a six-game homestand to open the season. Uintah now plays Hurricane on the road on Thursday, Dec. 14. Uintah’s next home game isn’t until Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, against Region 10 foe Orem High School. With the victory over UHS, Union broke a three-game losing streak and is 4-3 on the year. Emery pounded Union 85-47 on Tuesday, Dec. 5. In the first eight minutes at Uintah High School, both the teams were on a fast paced team. Union was up 17-12 after the first period. Union built the

advantage to 13 points at 28-15 in the second period after Tori Ross knocked down a 3-pointer. Kennedy Ross connected for a 3-pointer right before the break, and the Union Lady Cougars raced into the halftime break with a 31-17 edge. Union outscored Uintah 14-5 in the second period.

points and Tori Ross finished with nine. She had the other two 3-pointers.

At the third period, Union struggled from the field goal range. Uintah’s Kaidi Calder registered an offensive rebound for two points, making the scoreboard read 3121. At the 4:29 mark of the period, Kennedy Ross completed a three-point play the old fashion way for the first points of the second half.

Union was 9-17 from the free throw line. Uintah was 11-16.

Uintah’s Taylee Elison swished a 3-pointer, cutting the score to 3425. Union’s Kennedy and Tori Ross had back-to-back 3-pointers for a key stretch in the contest. After three periods, Union seemed to be in control at 40-26.

For the Uintah Lady Utes, Calder and Kassidy Callahan scored 10 points apiece. Teammate Madi Foster put in eight points. Ellison had the lone 3-pointer for the home team.

Roosevelt’s Kimmie Wall and Randlett’s Joe Frost are representing the Uintah Basin during the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Wall locked down her second straight spot in barrel racing, while Frost will be challenging for a world title in bull riding. This year’s Super Bowl of professional rodeo is made up of the top 15 contestants in each event qualified for the NFR, following a grueling regular season ending Sept. 30 after hundreds of rodeos across the United States and Canada.

Merry Christmas From Your Friends At The Chamber

The 10-day NFR runs Dec. 7-16, with each nightly performance to be televised live on CBS Sports Network. “It’s going to be pretty good watching this year with all 15 bull riders in all 10 rounds,” Frost said last week. “Every year there are some young guys who are coming up and riding good. There are a bunch of us that have been going who are pretty much the same age that are getting better every year.” This season, Wall finished 15th in the barrel race standings with $76,294. Ask an Expert: Six Tips for Holiday Spending

by

Amanda Chris-

tensen

According to The

National Retail Federation, American consumers spent $655.8 billion on the holidays (excluding automobiles, gasoline and restaurants) in 2016. Consumer spending is expected to increase by up to 4 percent this holiday season. Determining how much to spend on Christmas can be tricky. Financial planners advise us to spend no more than 1.5 percent of our income on holiday expenses. So, if you made $50K, you’d want to stay under $750 for total holiday spending. If you love the holiday,

but do not want to be paying for it in May, here are a few things to consider now: 1. Stick to it: Focusing on your gift-giving budget is one of the easiest ways to control holiday spending on your terms. Set a total spending limit on gifts, and carefully think through the gifts you buy. If it helps you stay within your spending budget, suggest a gift exchange with family members, coworkers, neighbors, etc. Draw names instead of buying gifts for each person. 2. Divvy it up: Once you’ve determined how much to spend, based on the recommended 1.5

percent, divide the total among the people you plan to buy gifts for, the holiday food extras and any other expenses you know you will incur. Finish the spending plan before you start shopping, and keep track of spending as you go. There are plenty of Christmas gift budgeting apps on iOS and Android to help. Choose one with high customer ratings. 3. Set it aside: If you are spending $8 to $10 each day for lunch, pack your lunch and save that money in a separate account for Christmas expenses. Over the next four weeks, SEE SPENDING on Page 18
