Ranches Host Spring Spectacular Lamb Tour Story and Photo By Chelsea Deets Six Uintah Basin sheep ranches came together for the second annual Spring Spectacular Club Lamb Tour last weekend near Vernal. The six ranches participating were: Allred/Elliott, Holmes Club Lambs, Long Club Lambs, Long Livestock, and Don Reynolds. Each contributed their best show-worthy lambs to the sale for a total of 14 prospects that were also listed in an online auction. The lambs ranged in price from $300 to $600 depending on parentage and physical characteristics.

Roosevelt Man Takes a Spin on Wheel of Fortune Story By Chelsea Deets Roosevelt resident Dean Wilson spun the wheel on Wheel of Fortune recently and walked away with $20,250 in cash and prizes. Wilson is the Vice President of Student Services at Uintah Basin Technical College and an educational consultant. He also co-founded a non-profit organization called, “You Got This,” which focuses on Suicide Prevention. In his spare time, the father of two enjoys beekeeping, boating, and riding motorcycles. “I applied to be on Wheel, because as a former high school principal, I always encouraged students and staff to take risks and get outside of their comfort zones,” Wilson said. “I always have said if you take a moonshot, there are two
options: land or learn.” Wilson says he has been tuning into the show for as long as he can remember. He, along with his wife and twin daughters, watch an episode of Wheel of Fortune every morning before going to school. “Contestants of the show spin the wheel to set the stakes before trying to solve a series of hangmanstyle word puzzles,” says Kyle Montplaisir, senior coordinator and publicity and promotions at Wheel of Fortune. “The one who solves the puzzles can win once-in-a-lifetime vacations, new cars, or cash prizes.” As for the winning puzzle, “I was fortunate to solve a “same letter first word” puzzle that was SIZZLING SIRLOIN STEAK,” says Wilson. “I ended up solving the puzzle without the S, which Pat (Sajak)

National Volunteer Month, A Great Time To Donate Blood Story By Derek Hopper

The American Red Cross (ARC) encourages eligible donors to give blood or platelets during April, which is National Volunteer Month. The ARC is seeking eligible donors of all blood types and has a critical need for type O donors. To ensure blood products are available for patients this spring. Nearly half of the general public knows someone who has been assisted by a blood transfusion. For many volunteer blood donors, like Gail Wright, that personal connection serves as an inspiration to give. Wright’s brother was involved in a serious motorcycle accident in 1982 and needed several blood transfusions during his four-month of recovery. She lived over 120 miles away at the time.
Unable to be near him, she decided she could help by donating blood. Wright has continued to donate and recently completed her 11th gallon of donated blood, which is 88 lifesaving blood donations. Volunteer donors are the only source of blood products for those in need of transfusions, and the Red Cross salutes the volunteer blood and platelet donors who help fulfill its mission to save lives. While donors of all blood types are needed, the Red Cross currently has a severe shortage of type O blood donations and urges type O donors to give now. who want to compete in stock shows and county fairs which occur multiple times a year between the months of April and December. “It’s like the Westminster dog show but for sheep,” says Ryan Long, one of the sellers. “The animals are groomed, prepped, nutrition is high, they have to be exercised, and they’re shown in competitions. Judges look at carcass merit (meaning quality of meat), balance of the lamb’s frame and proportions, looks and show ring appeal, and they’re placed accordingly.” Many of those at the Spring Spectacular were there to purchase lambs. Some of the attendees, the Henderson family, came for the chance to see running livestock farms in action as part of their 4-H educational requirements. “For the kids to qualify for the county fair, they have to have an educational component to their project and write an essay,” says Mrs. Henderson. “They have to attend show, go to different farms, go to a feed seminar. They get to see how things are set up, compare genetics at this farm with that of their own stock and see how their lambs
measure up.” Josie Henderson says she’s not old enough to be in 4-H yet. She’ll get to join officially next year. In the meantime, she gets to help her brothers with their lambs. It’s a big responsibility to raise a lamb for show. “They have to get up, get the lambs fed and watered and exercised so they build muscle,” says Henderson. “They have to get up early. Lambs get overheated quickly, so the kids have to get up at 5:30 a.m. every morning in order to exercise them. There’s no sleeping in when you have 4-H lambs. It teaches them a lot of responsibility.” Part of that responsibility, at least in the Henderson household, is money management, work ethic, delayed gratification, and investment in the future. “The first year, we bought everything, the lambs, food, supplies. When they sold the lambs at the county fair, the kids paid us back,” Mrs. Henderson said. “We then put the money in a bank account. They get a prize out of the money they earn, new clothes for school or something, but the rest is set aside to buy and care for a lamb and feed for the next year.”
