uchesne County! Hidden treasures! Vacation Pleasures! Whether you are coming to explore the high wilderness areas backpacking, enjoy a family reunion in a destination facility, cast a line into some of the best fishery waters in Utah, take part in one of the many area annual events, let your cares dissipate as you watch migrating birds or play the links on Utah’s best municipal 18 holes, you have made the right choice. Remember to WAVE as you visit some of the friendliest people in the West. Wildlife – Duchesne County can be wild. From greyling in the high mountain lakes, to fly fishing in the numerous streams and rivers, to the home of state record warm water fish, anglers can find an adventure that suits them. Need help getting started? Falcon’s Ledge Resort, near Altamont, is Utah’s ONLY Orvis recognized fly fishing school. Migratory birds like osprey, ferruginous hawks, eagles and many other raptors call Duchesne County home. Nearby Ouray National Wildlife Refuge, consisting of 12,000 acres of upland game and riparian habitat, 12 miles of Green River shore line, and set in a desert environment, is a resting migratory stop or nesting home for 209 species of birds. If upland game is more your idea of ornithology, there are areas for hunting pheasants in special Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Wildlife Management Areas or you can book a guided hunt at the Orvis endorsed Pleasant Valley Hunting Preserve. Big game is a big deal in Duchesne County. Here you can find all the major big game legally hunted in Utah including, deer and elk. Hunt the Ashley National Forest, or hire a professional local guide for a world class hunting experience. Activities for the outdoor enthusiast are as endless as the miles of trails, shorelines, and roadways.

Bike trails, ATV trails, dirt roads and rural macadam roadways offer excursions for road bikes, dirt bikes, ATVs, mountain bikes, road bikes, water craft, boats and of course snow mobiles in the winter. Don’t forget your helmets and appropriate safety gear. Day hikes, extended backpacking, and horseback rides all lead to destinations like the roof of Utah at 13,528 foot Kings Peak, the Grand Daddy Lakes past Defa’s ranch, and the pristine lands of the High Uinta Wilderness. Trails in Nine Mile Canyon lead visitors into pictograph galleries of one of the largest pre-historic rock art sites in North America. Vacation with family or friends at one of the 10 destination private resorts located within Duchesne County. From secluded rooms for two to a lodge built to hold 90, these resorts offer complete recreational packages. Book a wedding, hold a reunion or reward your employees with a working corporate retreat. Ashley National Forest creates the northern boundary of Duchesne County and includes improved campgrounds at various elevations from 6,000 feet to over 13,000 feet. The forest boasts 1,156 campsites and eight picnic areas. Dispersed camping is allowed in the National Forest and offers a 14 day occupation limit for primitive camp sites. Events in Duchesne County include rodeos, annual car shows, Ute Indian Tribal Pow Wows, the Duchesne County Fair, the annual Walleye Classic and the 100 year old tradition of Uintah Basin In Celebration (UBIC), a three day extravaganza held in Roosevelt the first weekend of each August. Families come together, reunite, join friends and meet visitors during these festive family oriented special occasions. Perhaps someday it will be you! Duchesne County... Spend a Day! Stay a lifetime! COVER PHOTOS BY: Ryan Lundstrom

acationing in the pristine High Uintas Wilderness Area, visitors forget their worries and the busy lives they lead. Muscles relax and tensions ebb away as the beauty of the mountains permeates the soul. Opportunities abound in this unique east-to-west mountain range to recreate and rediscover yourself. Hiking, horseback riding, fishing, hunting, photography, bird and animal watching and exploring are just some of the family oriented activities which can be enjoyed in the High Uintas. Countless lakes are scattered across a total of 456,705 acres of immaculate wilderness land. Rivers, streams, ponds, lakes, and reservoirs are open to public use on the 1,287,909 acres of the Ashley National Forest just outside of the wilderness boundaries. Everyone can enjoy and experience the Uinta Mountains. The world famous Grandaddy Lakes can be reached via horseback or hiking to the grandaddy lakes basin. The largest, and most visited, lake in the High Uintas, Grandaddy, sits in a glaciated bowl and shares the space with numerous lakes of various sizes. To avoid the crowds, simply travel to one of the other nearby lakes. Car camping, RV camping, primitive cabins, modern motels, and resort lodges populate the southern slope of the Uintas in Duchesne County, Utah. More than 1,100 campsites give those camping and RV’ing nearly unlimited opportunities to easily explore the mountains. The Ashley National Forest offers open camping with a 14-day camping limit on much of the south slope of the Uintas. Snow lingers in the high country, often into June. Best hiking in the wilderness area is between June and September. So, whether you are staying at the only Orvis-endorsed trout fishing lodge in Utah, or roughing it at a dude ranch at the entrance to the Grandaddy Lakes, or camping at a National Forest or State Park campground, the south slope of the Uintas and the High Uintas Wilderness area offers a world class escape from it all.

Award Winning Roosevelt City Golf Course. One of the best kept secrets of Duchesne County.

T

| Duchesne County Travel Guide

he front nine holes of the course were opened in May of 1974 and was designed by the late Joe Williams. The front nine is very traditional with tree-lined fairways and large greens. The trees increase the difficulty and make this nine a good test to even the advanced golfer. Water comes into play on three holes on this side. The greens on the front are not very severe but do have many subtle breaks. The back nine was opened in May in 1994 and was designed by local motel owner Gordie Harmston and built by a committee of local enthusiasts with a grant from the State of Utah and much donated time and money. The back nine plays more like a links course until the trees mature. The back nine features an island green, a par three with a vertical drop of over a 100 ft., and a par five with a double fairway. A large cliff area comes into play on three of the holes and the views are magnificent. The greens on the back are more severe than the front and offer a real putting test. The course offers wall to wall grass on all the holes except two. This is a very lush course and gives one the sense of an old country club.

n early August, farmers, ranchers, housewives, bronc busters and bull riders convene in Duchesne City, the county seat of Duchesne County, for the annual Duchesne County fair. The week-long fair actually begins with some competitions during the week leading up to the main events. Two royalties preside over the fair: the Rodeo Royalty and the Miss Duchesne County Royalty. You will see them at nearly all events, helping out and giving back to their communities. Guest performers, a demolition derby, a motor cross, fun runs, a livestock auction, 4-H events, cotton candy, a carnival midway and evenings filled with rodeo competition are all part of the festivities. A parade on Saturday begins the final evening at the end of fair week and fireworks set off from the high bluffs above the fair grounds send fair-goers home, happy until next year.

he best thing about the Basin is the people who live here,” says Chad Mortensen, director of UBIC events. The annual UBIC events bring together people from across the Uintah Basin and even brings visitors from across the state. This celebration is all about the sense of community found throughout the area, both in individual towns and the Basin as a whole. UBIC events span two weeks of fun and entertainment and offer something for everyone. Athletes can find numerous activities to show off their skills, including adult and kid triathlons, 3v3 soccer and basketball tournaments, softball tournaments, tennis tournaments, golf tournaments and more. Aspiring artists participate in the annual arts and crafts show or the kids’ Art in the Park events while performers of all varieties

show their skills during the UBIC talent show or the local talent performances at Constitution Park. Pageants are also part of the two-week celebration, including Miss UBIC, Mr. UBIC and the UBIC baby show. UBIC goes out with a bang the first Saturday in August with the annual UBIC parade held that morning on Main Street and State Street, a free concert that night featuring local and big-name bands from around the country and, of course, a fireworks show after. UBIC has more than 90 years of history. The first UBIC was held in 1923 and began as an agricultural and farm equipment convention. The annual festival ran for 21 consecutive years but was discontinued in 1943. It was revived in 1950 as the community celebration we know today and has continued ever since.

Flyfishing from wilderness to rural - beginners to experts

| Duchesne County Travel Guide

D

uchesne County is home to a myriad of year-round fishing opportunities. Whether your passion is fly fishing, stream fishing or ice fishing you’ll find it in Duchesne County. And it doesn’t take long to get out of city limits and get your line in the water. “I love that it is so close and simple to get to places to fish,” said Duchesne County Resident Ryan Lundstrom. “I can leave the office in Roosevelt and be fishing in Uinta Canyon in just over a half hour.” Lundstrom is an avid fisherman and knows where to go for great fishing. “For boat fishing you can not beat Starvation Reservoir, there is also good lake fishing in Big Sandwash Reservoir. To fly fish, head up any of the Uinta mountain canyons. Rock Creek, Yellowstone and Uinta canyons are always a good bet and will provide a fun and relaxing experience. To get higher and truly enjoy high elevation fishing, head up the Elk Horn Loop to the Pole Creek and Chepeta areas.” For ice fishing, head to Starvation Reservoir or Big Sandwash Reservoir this winter. You can also take advantage of Utah’s only Orvis Fly Fishing School at Falcon’s Ledge in Altamont, Utah. “There is no more calming and peaceful place to be than in the Uinta Mountains,” said Lundstrom”. It is such an old mountain range that it is always so quiet, not that there isn’t lots going on, animals and birds everywhere, they just seem quiet and peaceful. It is a great feeling to be up there.”

Uinta mountains, open meadows, Pine forest, Aspen groves and streams that are cold and clear. You may also see some of the great wildlife which could include elk, deer, moose, mountain sheep, bears, coyotes, eagles and hawks. If you want to stay awhile, there are two developed Forest Service campgrounds in the canyon, Yellowstone and Swift Creek. Both provide family and group camping. Dispersed camping is also allowed in accordance with Ashly National Forest camping guidelines. http://www.fs.usda.gov/activity/ashley/recreation/camping-cabins The best season to ride the trail is late spring to early fall. Nine Mile

Canyon

| Duchesne County Travel Guide

A

t the southern end of Duchesne County in Northeast Utah lays one of the great paleontological showcases in the intermountain west, Nine Mile Canyon. Accessed by a modern asphalt highway, the approach is through Pleasant Valley, just one mile west of the town of Myton. The 45-mile trip is now easily traveled by passenger cars. The final descent into Nine Mile Canyon, down Gate Canyon, should only be attempted in dry weather, however. Check forecasts and gain information locally before driving the last 6 miles into the canyon bottom. While modern stream bed crossings of concrete have been constructed, flash floods can still fill those dips and are hazardous if they are in flood. Once in the canyon bottom, there are 27 miles of road, some paved and some graded, which take the visitor on a scenic drive through some of the finest paleontological stone art galleries in the west. There are no facilities or gas stations in the canyon bottom and drivers are encouraged to fill their tanks before making the trip. Cottonwood Glen Rest Area offers picnic tables and toilets for day use only. Overnighting in the canyon is not an option. A full day should be allowed in planning so visitors will have the chance to explore by road and to allow time for short loop hikes to the various art panels. Perhaps the signature panel is the Cottonwood Panel, also known as the Great Hunt Panel. It has its own parking lot and a short trail takes the visitor to this famous rock art. Nine Mile Canyon abounds with art, cliffside granaries of ancient cultures and remnants of complete villages from the Fremont culture which once inhabited the canyon. The high desert setting of the canyon means there is little rainfall, though summers can have isolated and intense thunderstorms. Winters can produce snow which may make some areas icy. Spring and fall are beautiful times to visit the canyon. While in Nine Mile Canyon, remember to touch nothing, take only photographs and let the solitude and isolation sink into your group. This is a special land, sacred to many, and special to all.

Starvation State Park Family Fun Day

T

he annual Starvation Family Fun Day is the perfect way to bid summer farewell in style. People of all ages bask in the sunshine, fish, swim, play games and relax in the shade while eating their lunches at Starvation State Park. “We started Family Fun Day (in 2005) to run in conjunction with the Walleye Classic which started (in 1990),” said Duchesne County Chamber of Commerce Director Irene Hansen. “The first year we had 50 people, mostly family and friends of those fishing in the Classic. Today we probably have about 500 people at Family Fun Day and the Walleye Classic.

Each year Division of Wildlife officials install nets to section off a bay near the boat dock and stock it with fish for the Youth Fishing Derby. Children who participate receive prizes, but some receive additional prizes for biggest fish, most fish, longest fish and heaviest fish. Other activities include a small pond for children under 3, face painting, crafts and a puppet show. “This is all about introducing kids to parks, fishing and camping. We’ll lose a generation if we don’t introduce kids to these great things,” Hansen said.

We are located only 15 minutes from beautiful Starvation Reservoir and just 30 minutes from Roosevelt and the Roosevelt Golf Course! For more info visit our website at www.studio6duchesne.com
