Fizz, Boom, Read...Spark a Reaction: A Booming Success!   The “Fizz, Boom, Read” summer reading program at the Herr Memorial Library, which encourages children to continue reading throughout the summer, has ended.   This year, 760 children participated in the summer reading program logging over 165,000 minutes from June 1st through August 14th! This is an increase of 275 children from the summer of 2013!   “It was a fabulous summer!” said Carol Grove, Summer Reading Program Coordinator. “We had fantastic support from the community for our programs! The kids all did a great job of reading. The kids were VERY motivated to do the random acts of kindness for the Spark cards. It was great to see the reaction that the “sparks” caused!” Kind Act Spark Cards Totals are: • Adults: 127 Spark Cards • Teens: 22 Spark Cards • Kids: 73 Spark Cards Total number of Spark Cards Submitted 222 with 1,110 kind acts completed in the Union County community!

• Children participating in the summer reading program helped make braided dog toys to be given to shelter dogs at Mostly Mutts. • Dog and cat products were collected and donated to Arthur’s Pet Pantry and Mostly Mutts. • A collection of food items donated to the Food Bank. • A positive signage campaign on route 45 in Mifflinburg, where 12 businesses helped to post positive, inspiring and kind words on their message boards promoting our program. We in turn promoted them via Facebook and inhouse. This effort was recognized in the Daily Item, Standard Journal, Heritage Press and WBRE. • Letters and pictures were made by children and given to members of the community.   The Herr Memorial Library would like to thank all of the participants, sponsors and volunteers who helped to make the summer reading program a HUGE success! You have the spark!

Highlights from Herr’s contribution to the Kind Acts Experiment: • $103 raised for T&D Cats of the World Refuge as Friends of Herr Memorial Library sponsorship of Jade the Bengal White Tiger. • $43 raised for Kelsey’s Dream to use for purchasing 2 “Hopper the Cancer Crushers” an educational and comforting plush frog for children fighting their battle with cancer.

Digital Camera: Top of the Wish List   Herr Memorial Library is fortunate to have broad support among residents of the Mifflinburg Borough and surrounding areas, with many people donating time, money, and materials for the benefit of all.   In addition to ongoing requests for financial support for operating expenses, materials, and program development, the library occasionally is in need of very specific items.

We really appreciate everyone’s help! For more information, call 966-0831 or visit the library.   Herr News & Notes • Fall 2014
