Spring 2023 - A Newsletter for Friends of the Herr Memorial Library
All Together for Summer Quest 2023!
Readers of all ages join in kindness, friendship, and unity this summer as part of the library’s Summer Quest program, “All Together Now.” The program sponsored generously by Fulton Financial Advisors at Fulton Bank runs from June 1 – August 12 and offers fun and engaging programs, crafts, and more! Herr participants can track their reading with the Reader Zone App. Reading just 100 minutes a week, or 20 minutes a day will earn a brag tag to clip to a backpack, key ring, or book bag. Earn at least 5 brag tags for a chance to win a prize basket, only at our library! Prize baskets are sponsored by the Mifflinburg Kiwanis Club, and are filled with fun toys, books, and activities perfect for all ages. Earn all 10 brag tags, completing the goal of reading 1,000 minutes, and win a special prize!

The Board of Trustees for the Herr Memorial Library are thankful for the generous one-time donations and the committed yearly gifts from various members of our community to our fund development campaign. The board will again be reaching out to members of the community to talk about Library programming, success stories, and planning for the future. The Library also sends letters and arranges follow-up visits to meet with prospective donors to discuss information on how best to match them with Library needs. Reports on the success of the campaign will be made publicly available on the Library system website as well as in its printed publications. For more information call the Library at 570-966-0831.

Board of Directors
Dear Friends of the Herr Memorial Library,
For twenty-five years, the Union County Library System has faithfully served the residents of Union County in their literacy needs at the West End Library in Laurelton, the Public Library of Union County in Lewisburg, and the Herr Memorial Library in Mifflinburg. When the federated system was established, many county residents were counted as patrons of the Public Library for Union County due to the size and space restrictions of the other two smaller facilities. As time passed, the number of local patrons at our library increased. This caused a need to increase the size of the collection as well as our programming capabilities. Due to this increased growth, the Union County Commissioners and the Union County Library System petitioned the Office of Commonwealth Libraries to alter the Union County library service areas. The state library approved the petition, and as of 2023, the service areas for the three libraries were adjusted to reflect the communities they serve. The West End Library serves the west end of the county, the Herr Library serves the center of the county, and the Public Library of Union County services the eastern end of the county. While residents are encouraged to patronize each of the sister libraries, the home library of the resident is now responsible for meeting their literacy needs. The Herr Memorial Library is delighted and excited to include Limestone Township, West Buffalo Township, the Borough of New Berlin, and the Borough of Mifflinburg as part of its new service area.
Volunteers Needed!
Iddings Quarry graciously donated landscaping rock to assist with the library building’s rainwater drainage. Help is needed to spread the rock around the building base. Other maintenance needs include the washing of exterior and interior windows and gutter maintenance. Any help is greatly appreciated and would work to reduce the overhead costs. Thank you to our kind and generous community for your help!
The Herr Memorial Library continues to engage patrons of all ages with more than books and magazines. We offer unique programs such as Toddler Discover Class, Engineering Club, Teen Game night, and various programs for adults. The library also connects the community to non-traditional items such as Wi-Fi hotspots, computer access, cultural passes, e-books, and children’s Discovery Bags. It is an honor to serve our newly expanded service area and the surrounding community with technology, programming, and literature that strengthens the mind and ignites the imagination.
The library desires to continue to positively impact our community through the growth of literacy and technology development. However, the library cannot do this alone. We need your help. A monthly gift of just $15 can assist the library in meeting the needs of our growing community: collection expansion; program development for children, teenagers, and adults; and outreach opportunities. Your generous financial gifts ensure that future generations may enjoy the bountiful riches of the library. Remember that all gifts are tax-deductible and benefit the ongoing efforts of the library to fulfill its mission and vision for the community and beyond. Thank you in advance for your generous donation.
Sincerely,
Kym Lichtel Board President
