There’s More to the Story - NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK
Most people know about the wealth of stories available at the library, from picture books and large print to audiobooks and ebooks. But there’s so much more to the story of libraries.
Libraries are welcoming spaces that bring communities together for entertainment, education, and connection through book clubs, storytimes, movie nights, crafting classes, lectures, and more. The library offers a wide array of programs, classes and resources, including museum passes!
I LOVE THE ART GALLERY. IT IS A CULTURAL GEM A GIFT TO THE COMMUNITY THAT GIVES ARTISTS AN OUTLET AND VISITORS A CHANCE TO EXPLORE AND DREAM .
– Pat, Library Patron
And, libraries play a critical role in the economic vitality of communities by providing internet and technology access, literacy skills, and support for job seekers, small businesses, and entrepreneurs.
I APPRECIATE THE FREE TECH HELP AT THE LIBRARY. JUST ONE APPOINTMENT WITH JEFF, ( TECH ASSOC.) HELPED ME LEARN SO MUCH ABOUT EXCEL AND HOW TO USE IT AT MY JOB. – Kara, Library Patron
If you haven’t checked out the library lately, you’re missing the full story. Stop by for a visit during National Library Week, April 23 – 29!

A sign reads “Home is where our stories begin.” That was certainly true for me, but there’s another place that shaped my future. It was the lower level of the municipal building in my hometown — our public library. The lighting was mediocre, the space a bit cramped, and the smell was unforgettable - the lovely, musty odor of paper, visitors in damp coats and #2 pencils. It was a safe place where people were eager to help me open my mind and discover the world.
As we celebrate National Library Week, I’m struck by how fortunate we are to have such a vibrant local library. Sometimes I sit and watch people come through the door — children eager for a program with Miss Mary, seniors picking up materials for their BILL class, homeschool study groups doing homework, and people eager to use the reliable high-speed internet WiFi connections. There’s no doubt that when compared to other communities our size, the Public Library for Union County exceeds what most areas can afford and support.
It’s also interesting to think about those things that are less visible. Things like the dramatic increase in patrons who access the library’s digital offerings remotely, including a catalog of 4,000+ different magazines. Or, the fishing poles a grandparent has checked out for visiting grandchildren. Or, the families taking advantage of cultural museum passes.
These are available at the same price I paid as a child: zero dollars. The free public library is still free, and the Public Library for Union County staff are just as eager to help everyone who enters its doors. It’s a resource ripe for the taking. Admission to this world of discovery, learning, entertainment, and possibilities is the humble library card.
Come see what’s in ‘story’ for you at your local library!
