Do you have two minutes each day for you and your child to learn something new? ReadyRosie delivers daily videos to parents and caregivers that model everyday teachable moments to increase language, literacy and math skills for children birth to five years old. Upon registration, you will begin receiving an email and/or SMS text message with an activity you can do at home, at school or anywhere you are with your child. Each message contains an activity modeled on video in English and Spanish and an expert video to help explain the “why” behind the activity. Also included are instruction on how to adjust the activity for a younger or older child and how to extend the activity shown in the video. The material covered is aligned with the Commonwealth’s pre-K guidelines and the PA state standards. Download the free ReadyRosie mobile app for your iPhone or Android device. Find additional videos that can be filtered by language, skill, location, age and subject.

A note from the president...
We may celebrate New Year’s Day in January, but for me, as for many others, back-to-school time is the true “new year.” Moving up a grade, or starting school for the first time, is a rite of passage that we all have in common at some point in our lives. And because nowadays we document these moments by posting online, my Facebook feed has been filled recently with “first day of school” photos featuring smiling faces and brand-new backpacks. (I especially enjoyed the photo of an adult student beginning a master’s degree program, standing on her porch with bookbag loaded, just like her kids!) We recognize this rite of passage because education is so important in today’s world. And while school is the main place we go to learn, resources for education abound in other places, including online. A big issue for families, however, is that the information found with a Google search is not always appropriate for younger children, and kids (and their parents) can waste a lot of time and feel a great deal of frustration. Luckily, the public library can help! From the comfort of your own home (or by using the library’s computers and lightning-fast internet connection), you can access some of the many eResources available to library card holders. Starting in September, the library launched ReadyRosie, an online engagement tool for parents that offers teachable
activities through short videos. Other available eResouces include Tumblebooks which offers animated picture and chapter books, and PowerKids that features databases and age-appropriate reference material related to science, social studies, history, language arts and more. While these online programs can be accessed from home, you’ll have to come in to the library to take advantage of the extensive collection of non-fiction and reference books for young, intermediate, and adult readers. The act of browsing through the physical stacks has resulted in some of my favorite finds. There is something about pulling out and flipping through actual books (often judging them by their covers!) that just can’t be replicated online. Find comfort in knowing the library is here to support you through the journey of being your child’s first teacher. All these learning resources and more are available to anyone who holds a Union County Library System card! So take advantage of Library Card Sign-Up Month and reap the benefits of everything the library has to offer for life-long learning.

Living a Literary Life The Public Library for Union County is pleased to welcome Corri Hines as Assistant Director. Corri graduated with a bachelors degree in English literature and composition with a minor in secondary education from Westminster College. While working for the Mercer Area Library for four years she worked to obtain her masters in library science through Clarion University. Her love of literature extends into her personal life. Corri enjoys reading a variety of books like The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, The Temple of the Golden Pavilion by Yukio Mishima, The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Besides reading, Corri enjoys watching shows on Nextflix, listening to music, watching movies and exploring Lewisburg in her down time. ”A library is like a good friend,” said Corri. “You can find comfort in a good book and comfort in knowing you are never alone.” Corri hopes the library can be a destination space and a resource center for all ages.
