A Note from the President... A few weeks ago, I dropped my youngest child off at college, and while I’m excited to see what the future holds, I can’t help but feel a little nostalgic. Seventeen years ago, I was a stay-at-home mother with three children under the age of four. Seasoned parents would smile wistfully and say, “Enjoy this time -- the days are long, but the years are short.” I understand that now, but boy, did I have some loooong days. Getting out of the house always helped, and a trip to the public library was a guaranteed hit. We listened to stories and did crafts, played computer games, checked out cassette and VHS tapes (I’m dating myself here…) and took home books by the dozens. I still remember the “I Love Toy Trains” video that we must have watched a hundred times -- it introduced us to the Choo-Choo Barn in Strasburg, PA, which we then added to our list of Must Do Road Trips. (I’d absolutely recommend it to anyone in the Lancaster area with an hour or two to kill - it’s quite unlike anything you’ve ever seen before!) As I got to know the staff at the library, I learned how much they depended on volunteers to make so much of what we enjoyed possible. How could I help? I wondered. I started small -- typing and proofreading item listings for the annual auction. Over the years, my auction responsibilities increased and I branched out to (and recruited my children to help with) unloading books for the annual book sale. In 2007, I was asked to become a Library Trustee.

For me, one of the best things about volunteering for the library is the connections I’ve made with people who would otherwise be out of my circle of acquaintances. Many years ago, it seemed as if the only people I knew in town either worked at Bucknell with my husband or had children born between 1994 and 1997. Now, thanks to my involvement with the library, I know folks of all ages and occupations, including two wonderful people that we welcomed to our board this summer. Randy Maslow-Grindlinger is an interior designer and owner of Dwellings; Amanda Gaynor serves as a law clerk and attorney for the U.S. District Court in Harrisburg. They bring new and different perspectives while sharing the board’s commitment to a forward-looking library that meets the needs of our entire community. On behalf of the board and staff, I’d like to thank them, and all our volunteers, for their service. If you’re not already a volunteer, please consider joining us. There’s a place for everyone at the library!
