A note from the president...

We welcomed two new grandchildren into our family in September and December of 2016. As I observe the adjustments that each family is making to accommodate a new life in the house, I am reminded that in the early stages of new parenthood, the focus tends to be on feedings, sleeping, and diapers. It is hard to look beyond meeting the day-to-day needs of this amazing new being. And yet I know that the time between birth and age six is a period of development and discovery unparalleled in later life. Tremendous physical growth occurs and early literacy skills are learned between birth and age three. So I am sharing with the new parents some ways that they can influence their child’s capacity to learn with some very basic steps. In health care, the overall well-being of each individual is governed by diet, exercise, immunizations and regular testing choices. We have all had these conversations with our doctor. The United States Department of Agriculture even gets involved by promoting dietary guidelines through My Plate, which graphically shows the recommended portion for vegetables, fruits, grains, protein and dairy.

New parents can approach the development of their child’s brain in a similar way. There are activities that can become part of a child’s regular “diet” for learning. These include talking to your child in normal tones, singing in your best voice, rhyming words, imaginary play and reading. Each activity places the attention of the parent on their child thus helping to wire the 100 billion neurons that need to be connected in the brain. The library recognizes the parents’ role as a child’s first teacher and offers age appropriate spaces, materials, programming and opportunities to gain skills through modeling. It’s never too early to begin learning together! If you haven’t used the developmental tools available from the library please come by. We’d like to get to know you and your child better. Thank you for your support and interest,

Jacquelyn Paul President, Board of Trustees Jacquelyn Paul recently retired as Senior Vice President, Strategy and Business Development for Geisinger Health System.

Ben Hoffman

Ben Hoffman Ben’s longstanding commitment to the library began in 2012 when he joined the Book Sale Committee. For the past five years, Ben has helped move donated books from the back hallway of the library to the basement to be sorted. Each month he brings boxes of books that are not sale worthy to the loading dock for HandUp Foundation to pick up and recycle. Aside from moving boxes, Ben also helps break down cardboard, sort books and assist with cleanup at the conclusion of the July book sale. In 2016 Ben was awarded the silver President’s Volunteer Service Award. Eligibility for this award requires at least 175 volunteer hours. Ben’s volunteer work does not stop with the library. Ben also assists White Deer Run and the Food Bank. What Ben loves most about volunteering at the library is being able to help the library and occasionally Ben finds a book to keep! Thank you Ben for your commitment to helping the Book Sale Committee and the library!
