Summer Reading Success The 2014 Summer Reading program “Fizz, Boom, Read” success begins with statistics. 81 children/teens registered for the summer reading program and read a total of 56,250 minutes! That equates to 937.5 hours! There were also 24 adults who registered and read a total of 301 books! The library would like to thank all of the local businesses that generously

West End Says Goodbye continued to grow resulting in a freestanding building was dedicated as the West End Library in 2006!. This new space allowed for expansion of library materials, programs and space for public computer access. Throughout all of the changes, Susan has done collection development, maintained budgets, wrote proposals for grants, organized a shelving project and helped with circulation, programs and services.

The West End Library will soon be losing someone important to the library, Director Susan Epley, who is retiring on September 30th. Susan brought experience from the Sussex County Library in New Jersey and has been with the West End Library for 18 years. Since starting as a volunteer and board member back in 1996, Susan has watched the library grow. Starting as the West End Book Association, which was housed in a 750 square foot room in the Community Center, the need for a library

Susan will not be able to forget her time here at West End Library. “I am grateful for all of the years I’ve been here and to be able to see the library change and grow. I will miss working and helping the staff and the wonderful patrons that visit us. I want to thank the library staff, patrons and library board members for all of their help and support.” said Susan.

Stock Your Kitchen • Pampered Chef Fundraiser The holiday season is just around the corner and the delicious aroma of pumpkin pie, turkey, ham and all of the trimmings will soon be filling the air. Why not get something special for the chef in your kitchen! The West End Library is hosting a Pampered Chef fundraiser during the month of October with an open-house slated for 6 to 8 pm, Thursday October 23 at the library. Cindy Inch will do a cooking demo and there is an opportunity to place an order from the catalogs. Orders must be placed by October 31 and can be done by visiting the library or online at www.pamperedchef.biz/csi. Items should arrive by mid-November. For more information call 570-922-4773.

What’s Going On at Your Library West End Readers 1st Monday of the Month Starting in October The group will be discussing the book House Rules by Jodi Picoult on October 6.

Starting October 1, the Union County Library System is offering free access to digital magazines through Zinio. Zinio offers a large collection of popular digital magazines with unlimited simultaneous access. No holds, no late fees and the best part is the magazines can be downloaded indefinitely to your Zinio account. You can read online in any web browser or you can read through the free app on your mobile device. To take advantage of this new online service: - Live within Union County - Have a valid library card and pin number. (If you need your pin number, just ask) - Sign Up for a Zinio Account Also, if you have not tried Hoopla, now’s the time! Hoopla is a digital collection containing movies, TV shows, audiobooks and music. On demand, no waiting, no holds, and free with a valid library card. Needlecraft and Friendship 3rd Friday of the Month We are going to be knitting and crocheting items for babies and children to be sent to World Vision. You can also bring your knitting, crocheting, quilting and other needlecraft projects to the library for an afternoon of fun and friendship. West End Lego Club 4th Thursday of the Month through December Lego enthusiast Bobbie Reynolds will graciously share his ENORMOUS Lego collection with the patrons of the West End Library. Join us for a night of building fun. Programs begin at 6:30 pm. If you are interested in a particular themed set, please let us know. We will make our best effort to have the set ready for you. Protect Your Devices: Malware and Anti-Virus Monday, September 15 - 6:30 pm Check out this program to learn what Malware is and what types are out there on the web that could hurt your computers, tablets, and smartphones. Other topics of discussion include scams, anti-virus software and some “Best Practices” when downloading from the web and an app store. Scarecrow Craft Night Thursday, October 9 - 6:30 pm Visit the library to enjoy an evening of crafting with gourds and straw hats. What fanciful scarecrow can you make? Enjoy a cup of warm apple cider to spice up the night! This program is open to children and families (children under age 7 should be accompanied by an adult.) The program will begin at 6:30 pm. Please register to attend so that enough materials will be available.


What’s Going On at Your Library “Metropolitan Restoration” Antique Car Tour Thursday, October 16 - 6:15 pm Mr. Paul Reeder, owner of Metropolitan Restoration Service, Inc. of Hartleton, will offer a tour of his facility to children, families, and antique car “buffs” of any age. Interested participants can meet at the library at 6:15 pm, and will travel as a group to Metropolitan Restorations. Families will need to provide their own transportation. Visit their website for more information www.metropolitan-restorationservice.com Civil War and the Underground Railroad with Bruce Teeple Monday, October 20 - 6:30 pm Bruce Teeple is a writer, local historian, speaker, and columnist for the Centre Daily Times. A graduate of Penn State in history and political science, he served for nineteen years as curator of the Aaronsburg Historical Museum.

Discover Tuesdays - 10:30 am “Discover” is a preschool story time for children (ages birth to five years old) to enjoy along with a parent, grandparent or caregiver. Each week features a different theme complete with read-aloud stories, music and musical instruments, age-appropriate crafts, and educational games and activities. This program is supported by the Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way.

EllaCinda Beading Monday, November 10 - 6:00 pm Cindy Reed will be showing the techniques of making a beaded bracelet. There is a limit of 12 participants and is for ages 16 and older.

Community News West End Ball Association The West End Ball Association would like to thank the community, township supervisors and employees, coaches, parents and players for their part in making 2014 a great year of ball in the West End. All volunteers must have a background check, which is provided at no cost by the organization. Anyone interested should plan to attend our monthly meetings, which are held on the second Sunday of each month @ 5pm @ the Rec Center. Hartley Township Youth/Rec Center The Hartley Township Youth/Rec Center would like to extend a special thank you to the community for their support of the fundraisers and bingos held throughout the year. We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to each of the businesses that donated items for our Mother’s Day Gift basket bingo held in May. Our Cash Bingos will start up again towards the end of September. Please watch for the dates on our new sign that will soon be displayed in front of the library area (next to the road). To reserve, call Linda @ 922-1151 West End Ambulance It has been a busy summer for us, as we’ve continued to respond to an average of 20 calls per month since the Spring. The ambulance association plans to sponsor a walking program this fall to motivate our community to exercise 30 minutes- twice a week. The program will be designed to take in less active walkers as well as more advanced walkers. We continue with our trainings and updating our education to serve our community. We hope to add some Community CPR classes to our area as well, watch for details this winter. Thank you for supporting us in our fundraisers this year.
