Mr. Sticky’s Fundraiser

The West End Library is selling Mr. Sticky’s sticky buns starting October 1 through November 7th. Buy one sticky bun for $3 or two sticky buns for $5. Payment is due at time of ordering and all checks should be made payable to West End Library. The orders may be picked up at the library on Monday, November 20th after 4:00 pm. Proceeds from this fundraiser benefit the library’s children’s programs and books.

Cookbooks Are On the Way

This holiday season look for the West End Library cookbooks available for purchase. Recipes were collected from the West End community and compiled to create this cookbook. Cookbooks can be purchased at the West End Library. Proceeds from the cookbooks sales will be used to enhance the library’s book collection.

Thank You

Thank you to all who volunteered, baked and contributed books for our annual Book and Bake Sale in May. We had a fine selection of books covering a wide variety of topics; and, of course, some good fiction in hardcover and paperbacks. Our library continues to expand its collection and services because of your commitment, Thank you for making our sale a success.

Fire Prevention

October is pumpkin month at the West End Library! School age children can come to the library to decorate a pumpkin with supplies provided by the library. There will be no pumpkin carving during this program.

Make an Autumn craft and watch a movie while enjoying some yummy snacks. Dress up in a costume and come have a good time!

The West End Fire Company presents fire prevention and fire safety. This program is held in the Hartley Township Recreation Center and is for children, homeschool families and the public.

Summer Reading - Thank You!

Our summer reading program was a great success and we would like to thank everyone that participated and donated items for this years events.Thank you to Burger King, McDonald’s, Meixell-Diehl Insurance, Mifflinburg Bank & Trust, Mifflinburg Moose, and Union County Sportsmen’s Club.

Handmade Quilt Wall Hanging Raffle

Tickets are $1 per ticket or 6 for $5. The tickets are on sale at the West End Library. The raffle runs until April 8, 2018. The winner will be drawn at the Gift Basket Bingo. The quilt is hanging in our library. Don’t miss out on a great wall hanging that was made by our board members.

The Bibliophile’s Bench Real Food/Fake Food by Larry Olmstead Whether you are a foodie, a label reader trying to eat healthy or a savvy consumer who wants to make sure you get what you pay for Larry Olmstead’s Real Food/Fake Food has something for you. Broken into chapters focusing on wine, olive oil, fish, cheeses, beef and geographical specialities like Parmesan cheese (not the green box cheese!) and parma ham. Olmstead’s book is well worth a read before your next trip to the grocery store or dinner out. Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz If your favorite board game is clue and you are always the first to figure out whodunit or enjoy English cozy mysteries in the tradition of the grand dames of mysteries like Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers then Horowitz’s Magpie Murders is the book for you. A tale in which art imitates life with a book editor taking on the role of sleuth to solve two whodunits; one fictional the finale to one of her most successful authors suspicious death of the same author. Wait until the weekend to start this book because once you start you will be hooked.

Coupon Book The West End Library acquired a community coupon book. Visit the library during regular business hours and grab coupons. The coupon book is located in the magazine area in the library.

Dewey Cam Now available, Dewey the Hamster Cam. Visit UnionCountyLibraries. org/dewey-the-hamster/ to see what he is doing. Since hamsters are nocturnal he usually emerges around 9:00 pm. You never know though because he may be out during the day after his excursions in his hamster ball.

Become A Volunteer Each year the number of trained emergency medical personnel serving rural areas of Pennsylvania decreases, and in some instances cases has resulted in the closing of local ambulance services. Union County West End Ambulance needs volunteers. If you are interested, in serving your community as an Emergency Medical Technician , or an Emergency Medical Responder please contact the station at (570-922-1120) or by email at westend27@dejazzd.com.

Community News

The Western Union County Youth Center will re-open on January 5, 2018 with a Skill Toys Program, generously sponsored by the West End Library. The Youth Center is next door to the West End Library and is open to youth from the Mifflinburg Area School District, Ages 13 and up. All our programs are free. We are open on most Friday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. If the schools are closed, the youth center is closed. If winter weather starts after school hours, the Youth Center will be closed that night. Check the Union County Times for our latest schedule, or stop by the West End Library to pick up a schedule.

The Hartley Township Recreation Center will have Bingo on the following dates: October 7 and 21 • November 4 • December 2 January 6 & 27 • February 10 & 24 • March 10 & 24 April 7 & 21 • May 12: Mother’s Day Bingo There will be no Bingo in December. Located near the Laurelton Ball Field, doors open at 5:45 pm and Bingo starts at 6:30 pm; cost is $.25 per card. Delicious homemade food is available for sale. Proceeds support the Youth & Recreation Center. For more information, call 570-9221578. Come out for a night of food, fun and BINGO!
