Benefits the West End Library

Proceeds from this fundraiser are used for new materials, programming and summer reading programs.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten Families are invited to join the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. This nationwide challenge encourages parents and caregivers to regularly read aloud to their children. By reading just one book a night, families can reach the 1,000-book goal in three years and provide their children essential early literacy skills. Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to during early childhood. Most importantly, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading. There are two ways to record your books. Download the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten free app or stop in the library for paper log forms. The library is here to help you and your child reach the 1000 book goal!

Play K Stations

Parents and other family members want the best for their children and the library is the place you can come play, learn and explore. Coming soon are Play K stations. Special play materials will be put out at designated times for families to come in and play, learn and explore on their own. This program was developed by the Office of Commonwealth Libraries and is part of the Cruise into Kindergarten initiative. Stop in the library for more information. West End Wisdom

Borrow a loop and loom kit from the library! These looms make adorable pot holders. Make one pot holder for you and then one for the library to sell for fundraising.

Wee Blocks

Young children learn best when they are able to construct knowledge through meaningful play. Younger children will enjoy Wee Build blocks and older children can play with Magna Tiles and Legos. The West End Library received Wee Build materials as part of a state grant from the Office of Commonwealth Libraries.

Straw Bale Gardening

The library is going to be a stop on the 2016 Garden Tour on June 26th. In preparation, the library is creating a straw bale garden for the kids to create and garden throughout the summer. Straw bale gardening is a different type of container gardening. Once the straw inside the bale begins to decompose, the straw becomes “conditioned and ready to plant.

Dog Agility

Not much into team sports? Why not check out agility? Your dog will learn new tricks and you will have fun bonding with them and playing a great game. This summer the library will host an agility demonstration. Cocker Spaniels, Papillions, Australian Shepherds and many other dogs and handlers will be on hand. Come to the library for an afternoon of fun!
