SRC Information

GENERAL CLASS INFO Non-credit courses are designed to teach skills that an individual can use during leisure time. Classes are taught by qualified instructors who have special skills they wish to share. Course fees cover instructor’s salary and most supplies. If you are interested in teaching a class or have ideas about new classes, we encourage you to drop in and see us or contact Rose Edmonds at rose. edmonds@ucr.edu. You may register for classes at recreation.ucr.edu or at the front counter of SRC North and South. All fees are paid at the Student Recreation Center and each class has a separate fee structure depending on the nature and cost of the class. We accept Visa, Master Card and Discover cards. No refunds on activity classes unless the class is cancelled by the Recreation department. All classes have a minimum and maximum number of participants required, depending on the type of class. Enrollment is based on payment of fees and is on a firstcome basis. Class will be closed after the maximum has been reached and cancelled 48 hours before the first class session if the minimum is not met. LIFE SKILLS & LEADERSHIP Workshops are offered throughout the academic year; attend five out of the six annual workshops to earn a Certificate of Completion in Life Skills and Leadership. Core values include goal setting, communication, leadership fundamentals, self-esteem, fiscal management, health and wellness, time management and community building! BASIC BEGINNER SALSA Level 1 April 17 - June 5 Tuesday, 7:00pm - 7:55pm MPR E This 8-week class will introduce you to the rhythm of Salsa music, with an emphasis on the development of partnering skills, lead and follow, dance floor etiquette and a good understanding of timing. You will learn Salsa footwork, dance positions and combination/figures. We will teach you fun and easy dance patterns. This class will give a solid foundation of movements so you feel comfortable on the dance floor. No prior dance experience necessary. No partner needed.

HIP HOP DANCE Beginning April 15 - June 3 Sunday, 7:00pm - 8:00pm MPR A Students will learn basic concepts for the first 4 weeks of the class then they will be introduced to four choreographed dance routines for the last 4 weeks of the class. Please be prompt and wear comfortable clothing. All levels welcome and no prior dance experience is required. UCR/IEP Students $25 Non-students $30

HIP HOP DANCE Intermediate April 15 - June 3 Sunday, 8:00pm - 9:00pm MPR A This intermediate class is recommended for students who are comfortable with learning choreography. BEGINNER BACHATA Level 1 April 17 - June 5 Tuesday, 8:00pm - 8:55pm MPR E Bachata is a dance that originated in the Dominican Republic. It is a popular and fun style of social dancing. It is also the easiest of all the Latin Dance Styles. In this 8-week class, we will teach you the 8-count rhythm step which

will introduce you to the basics of this playful dance. Bachata can be danced either in open or closed positions and typically involves a side-to-side movement. AMERICAN RED CROSS STANDARD FIRST AID with CPR/AED Adult/Pediatric April 22 Sunday, 9:00am - 4:00pm May 19 Saturday, 9:00am - 4:00pm Conference Room This class incorporates the current American Red Cross standards. It will help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. Learn skills to give immediate care to a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel help arrive and take over. Students who successfully complete this course will receive certificates for Standard First Aid w/CPR/AED - adult and child - valid for two years. UCR/IEP Students $50 Non-students $90

SELF DEFENSEBASIC, WOMEN/MEN April 24 Tuesday, 6:00pm - 9:00pm MPR B & C Learn to prevent assaults and practice how to effectively fight back in life-threatening situations. This class is designed for both women and men ages 18 years and up. This class is free to the UCR Community and you must call the Women’s Resource Center to register (951) 827-3337.

April 17 - June 7 Tuesday. Thursday, 6:00pm - 7:00pm Tennis Courts This is a beginners class for students that are completely new to tennis or have had limited tennis experience. In this class, students will be focusing on learning the basic strokes, scoring and tennis etiquette. The focus of the classes will also be on the consistency in strokes. Students will improve on their movement skills, hand-eye coordination and racquet skills by the end of this course. The goal is for the students to be able to sustain a rally and understand the mechanics of each stroke.

Players should know the basics for serving overhead and should know the rules and regulations for match play. The

JUDO, BEGINNING April 2 - June 6 Monday, Wednesday 7:00pm - 8:00pm MPR D This is an introductory course in Kodokan Judo. You will learn several basic throws, pins, arm bars, chokes and how to fall properly to protect against injury. Free practice (Randori) will include standing techniques and mat work. Judo etiquette and respectful behavior is required during the class. If all technical and attendance requirements have been met, you may test for Yellow belt at the end of the quarter. *No class May 28

JUDO, ADVANCED April 2 - June 6 Monday, Wednesday 7:00pm - 9:30pm MPR D Approval required. This is intermediate and advanced training in Kodokan Judo. Judo Gi is required. This class focuses on Tachi Waza (standing techniques) and Ne Waza (ground techniques). Kata will also be taught and practiced on a selection basis. TAI CHI, WEAPONS AND APPLICATIONS April 2 - May 21 Monday, 7:00pm - 8:30pm MPR C This class will explore the applications of the t’ai-chi ch’uan form , specific training methods of pushing hands, san shou, chin-na, Red Boat Style and t’ai-chi sticky hands. Emphasis will be on practical techniques. No previous experience is necessary. Bring a waist high stick to class.

T’ai-chi Ch’uan is primarily practiced to promote good health, improve coordination, balance and body awareness, calm the mind, reduce stress and practice “dynamic relaxation” which harmonizes the mind and body. Harvey Kurland is a certified T’ai-chi ch’uan Chief Instructor and Exercise Physiologist. He has studied T’ai-chi ch’uan and other related arts for over 35 years and is a Certified T’aichi ch’uan Chief Instructor who teaches the complete system of long form, pushing hands, San Shou, sword and walking stick, ch’i kung, as well as the circular Bagua training. Harvey’s goal is to improve the health of his students and they have all greatly benefited by showing significantly improved balance, stress reduction and lowered blood pressure.

MPR C T’ai-chi ch’uan is a traditional Chinese martial art that has been shown to reduce stress, strengthen the immune system, lower blood pressure and improve balance. INTRAMURAL SPORTS The Intramural Sports program offers structured leagues and tournaments for all undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and staff members with an SRC membership. Competition ranges from competitive to recreational; and most sports offer either men’s, women’s, or co-rec leagues. With more than 20 sports and tournaments offered, we have something for everyone!

Sign up on the spot and wait for your name to be called, on the second floor of the SRC. This a free service to SRC Members. Sign up at 4:45pm to secure your spot. Spots typically fill by 5:00pm.

Policies: This service is for SRC members only. Massage is provided on a first come first serve basis. One session per day and a maximum of three sessions per month is permitted. Members sign up, in person, beginning at 4:45pm each day. Appointments cannot be made online or prior to each day. Members must be present to sign in. Signing in for others is not permitted. It is the members’ responsibility to be present at their scheduled massage time. If the member is not present at their scheduled time, the next member on the waiting list will receive a massage. If the sign-up sheet is full, interested members can add their name to the waiting list. Wait listed members must check in and be present to take the available spot in the event of a no-show. One massage session is 7-10 minutes long, but can vary. Length is based on the number of participants and at the discretion of the massage therapist. The last session will begin at 7:50pm.

AQUATICS The SRC has a 237,000 gallon pool and a 20-person spa available for your aquatic adventures. The pool contains a lap swim area, recreational swim area, a vortex/current channel, and a large deck with lounge furniture. It is available for lap swimming, recreational swimming, programming and rentals. Aquatics provides an opportunity for the UCR community to bridge academic learning with recreational health and wellness, leading to a higher quality of life. Participants will learn how to hold their breath, float, get an introduction to the basic strokes and learn basic water safety skills. AMERICAN RED CROSS LIFEGUARDING Registration opens April 9! April 14, 15, and 21 Saturdays/Sundays, 9:00am - 5:00pm (Must attend all sessions.)

Through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, you’ll learn teamwork, rescue and surveillance skills, First Aid and CPR/AED and other skills you need to work as a professional lifeguard. Successful completion results in a 2-year certification in Lifeguarding that includes first aid, professional-level CPR and AED in one certificate. Participants will need a bathing suit for all meetings. Prerequisites: • All participants will need to swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. • Tread water for two minutes only using your legs. • Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds. • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 – 10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object. • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object while keeping your face at or near the surface so you are able to get a breath. You should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water using a ladder or steps. If participants fail to demonstrate these prerequisites they will receive a refund for the full amount. These lessons are for SRC members and eligible members children of all abilities. All swimming lessons are taught utilizing the American Red Cross guidelines and teaching techniques. COOKING WELL Cook, Eat, and Be Healthy! Participants of all skill levels are welcome to the SRC cooking demonstrations, located in the classroom kitchen. Our kitchen is fully equipped with the tools necessary for our chef to improve your personal wellness through any of our healthy cooking classes. With the help of Chef Val, you will pick up valuable cooking techniques. Come, eat, and go home with delicious healthy recipes. Classes are demonstrations only unless otherwise specified. Space is limited, so you must register at the SRC front counter.

Our culinary demos, located in the SRC South kitchen, are FREE to SRC Members. Registration is open until the time of the demo, depending on availability.

ROPES The Ropes Program’s goal is to provide and promote adventure based, purposeful risk taking and cooperative team building opportunities for UCR and the UCR community. This auto-belay uses centripetal force to lower you safely to the ground once you reach the top. All routes that are green tagged can be climbed on the auto-belay. You must get certified by a ROCK staff in order to climb during non-roped hours.
