UC Reciprocity To support UC’s student and staff health throughout the UC system, a policy of reciprocity is available to all UC Recreation Sports Departments at all campuses. All UC Recreation Departments will honor other UC campus students and campus Recreation members at their facilities during the school year, with a valid UC students ID card and UC Recreation members card at no charge. At specialty facilities, i.e. aquatic and equestrian centers, the visiting student/member must pay the standard rate. Yes, you can use facilities at UCLA, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, UC Davis, and UC Merced.

SRC Information
General Class Info Non-credit courses are designed to teach skills that an individual can use during leisure time. Classes are taught by qualified instructors who have special skills they wish to share. Course fees cover instructor’s salary and most supplies. If you are interested in teaching a class or have ideas about new classes, we encourage you to drop in and see us or contact Rose Edmonds at rose. edmonds@ucr.edu. You may register for classes at the front counter of SRC North and South. All fees are paid at the Student Recreation Center and each class has a separate fee structure depending on the nature and cost of the class. We accept Visa, Master Card and Discover cards. No refunds on activity classes unless the class is cancelled by the Recreation department. All classes have a minimum and maximum number of participants required, depending on the type of class. Enrollment is based on payment of fees and is on a first-come basis. Class will be closed after the maximum has been reached and cancelled 48 hours before the first class session if the minimum is not met. For information on specific classes, please contact us at (951) 827-5731. SRC parking is available in any guest lot (i.e. 25, 24, 30, and 22). Lot 25 allows for 90 minute parking with any valid UCR parking permit or receipt purchased at the lot’s parking pass dispenser. Parking lot guest passes may also be purchased at the Parking Kiosk at the UCR entrance off of University Ave., and on Canyon Crest Drive off of Martin Luther King Blvd. Note: Workout attire is required for all classes; denim or jeans are not allowed.
Open Recreation The Student Recreation Center offers structured activities in all of our programs, but we also encourage open recreation. That means you can drop in and do your own thing! Take advantage of our facility space and swim, dance, climb, lift, jog, or play a game. Available open recreation spaces include all multi-purpose rooms (MPR), tennis courts, fitness center, all courts, and The Rock. For more information and changes to our open recreation schedule, please visit us at recreation. ucr.edu or look out for our regularly updated R’Rec screens inside the SRC. You may also call into our message system at (951) 827-5738.
Free SRC Use Days If you are not an SRC member, but are eligible to join... then we have a treat for you. We are opening our doors to the UCR community for an entire week free! Visit us at the Student Recreation Center and take part in our group exercise classes, swim in our awesome pool, climb The Rock, play basketball and indoor soccer in our MAC gym, serve it up on the tennis courts, and explore our entire facility! We’re positive that you’ll like what you see, and that you’ll feel better after participating in all the fun. March 28 - April 3 Monday - Sunday; see hours on page 4. Dance Argentine Tango Danced to the haunting and alluring melodies of the Bandoneon, the Argentine Tango is rich in history. This sensual dance is a dialogue of the spirit translated into a language of intricate and flirtatious footwork. Ballroom/Latin Dance: Quickstep/Rumba This dance was born to the syncopated rhythms of the Big Band Sound and you will feel like a true dancer gliding gracefully around the floor. Ballroom Workshop: Quickstep This workshop will examine the basic coordination between the movements of the feet and torso as well as the posture of the head and arms. May 1 Sunday, 1:00pm - 4:00pm MPR A UCR/IEP Students $15, Non-students $20. Contemporary Dance This class will start at the beginner level and will ease into intermediate level choreography. Please wear stretchy, comfortable clothing. Sneakers are not allowed. All levels welcome and no experience needed. Hip Hop Dance, Beginning Students will learn basic concepts for the first half of the class then be introduced to four choreographed dance routines for the second half. Self Defense, Women/Men Learn to prevent assaults and practice how to effectively fight back in life-threatening situations. This class is designed for women and men ages 18 years and up. Hip Hop Dance, Intermediate This intermediate class is recommended for students who are comfortable with learning choreography. Students will learn a new piece every week that increases in difficulty for progressive learning depending on class skill level.
Tennis, Beginning* This class is designed to introduce the basic strokes in tennis; the forehand, backhand, serve, volley and slice backhand. We’ll teach the basics and sharpen your game. General Classes American Red Cross Standard First Aid with CPR/AED Adult/Pediatric This class incorporates the current American Red Cross standards, and will help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. Learn skills to give immediate care to a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel help arrive and take over. Upon successfully completing this course, you will receive certificates for Standard First Aid with CPR/AED - Adult and child - valid for two years. Tennis, All Levels* We’ll teach the basics and sharpen your game. Applicable to all skill levels. Highland Bagpipe, Continued This class is a continuation of winter quarter’s Highland Bagpipe class. While a help, the ability to read music is not a prerequisite. A practice chanter is required. Aikido, Unlimited Students learn the basic moves of Aikido, a traditional Japanese Martial Art, designed to turn an attack against an aggressor. Skills developed are the ability to fall without being injured, escaping from grabs and assorted attacks. Beginning students train with more advanced students which moves the learning curve forward at a quicker pace. Aikido, Weapons Students learn to handle the traditional Japanese jo (staff) and bokken (wooden sword) through katas (set forms) and dual practice. Aikido, Intermediate/Advanced Students begin to expand and develop a wide range of defensive maneuvers and perfecting “turning an attack against the attacker.� Classes are fun and non-confrontational. Judo, Beginning This is an introductory course in Kodokan Judo. You will learn several basic throws, pins, arm bars, chokes and how to fall properly to protect against injury. Free practice (Randori) will include standing techniques and mat work. Judo etiquette and respectful behavior is required during the class. If all technical and attendance requirements have been met, you may test for Yellow belt at the end of the quarter.

Judo, Advanced Approval Required. Intermediate and advanced training in Kodokan Judo. Judo Gi is required. This class focuses on Tachi Waza (standing techniques) and Ne Waza (ground techniques). Kata will also be taught and practiced on a selection basis. Competition is recommended but not required, as it is a crucial method for testing and improving judo skills. Karate, 5-18 years, All Levels Learn discipline, focus, self-defense and increase fitness while having fun learning traditional Japanese Shotokan Karate Do. Emphasis will be on practical techniques. No previous experience is necessary. Bring a waist high stick to class. Tai Chi Yang, Beginning T’ai-chi ch’uan is a traditional Chinese martial art that has been shown to reduce stress, strengthen the immune system, lower blood pressure, and improve balance. Students will receive a semi-private lesson to learn the twenty-eight movement form. April 6 - May 25 Wednesdays, 7:00pm - 8:00pm MPR C UCR/IEP Students $56, Non-students $78.
Tai Chi, Beginning/Continued This multilevel class uses “Individualized Curriculum” where students work on their own program. Beginning students will learn the 28 movement Old Yang style form. Continuing students will work on the Long form, San Shou Form, Fast Form, Kuang Ping (Guang Ping) form, Pa-kua Chang (baguazhang), Hsing-I Ch’uan (Xing-yi quan), pushing hands and t’ai-chi weapons.

Karate, Adult, Beginning Karate is an intense and effective method of self-defense, a rigorous total body exercise, a philosophy of life, and an exciting competitive sport.

Tai Chi Yang Style, Advanced This class teaches the Old form of Yang Style Symmetrical form and Ch’i Kung (Qigong). Students should have at least one session of Beginning t’ai chi ch’uan. This class covers the whole system including the Long Form, Pushing Hands, San Shou-Partner Form, Fast form and weapons. Hsing-I Ch’uan and Pa-kua chang (baguazhang) may also be taught. COMPETITIVE SPORTS Competitive Sports provides structured and organized programs to fullfill your needs of relaxation, socialization, achievement, physical wellness, and fun. Go deep in one of our competitive flag-football leagues or challenge another dorm to basketball in the same gym where the UCR Highlanders compete. The SRC gym, MAC Gym, Glen Mor fields, and the Blaine Sports Complex are just some of the locations where you’ll get a chance to compete against others. Intramural Sports The Intramural Sports program offers structured leagues and tournaments for all undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and staff members with an SRC membership. Competition ranges from competitive to recreational; and most sports offer either men’s, women’s, or co-rec leagues. With over 20 sports and tournaments offered, we have something for everyone! All levels, gender, and skills are welcomed. Get Active! Registration opens March 28 and ends April 7 at 5:00pm. The Competitive Sports office is located in SRC North with extended office hours during registration, Monday - Friday until 7:00pm.

A sport club is a group of students who meet regularly to pursue an interest in a competitive collegiate activity at the state, regional, and national level. UCR sport clubs are an exciting alternative to intramural sports and offers a way of getting involved in a fun and competitive environment. Rugby, Soccer, Volleyball, Kendo, Tae Kwon Do and Ball Room Dancing clubs compete against other college teams. We have 19 highly competitive sports and Rec club teams. Each club team is developed, organized, and managed by students with guidance from the Competitive Sports Assistant Director.

Sport clubs enable students to enhance their collegiate experience and serve as an excellent setting for the development of athletic skills, student leadership, and social outlets. All participants are welcome and membership fees are required for uniforms, association fees and other equipment. There are try-outs as it relates to becoming a member of the team. Challenge yourself with 110 Bootcamp, learn from our certified personal trainers and make fit happen at the SRC. Note: Workout attire and non-marking shoes are required; denim or jeans are not allowed.

Running Clinic Everybody runs, so why not do it correctly? Available to SRC Members only, this clinic will teach you the principals of running, optimal form, proper warm up technique and strength exercises to keep running injury free. Video analysis will be used to catch and correct common running problems. Whether you’re just starting to run, training for your first 5k, or even a seasoned distance runner, this clinic will teach you the skills needed to continue your running for years to come. AQUATICS
The SRC has a 237,000-gallon pool and 20-person spa available for your aquatic adventures. The pool contains a lap swim area, recreational swim area and a vortex/current channel. It is available for lap swimming, recreational swimming, programming and rentals. A large deck with furniture is also available for those that would like to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Aquatics provides an opportunity for the UCR community to bridge academic learning with recreational health and wellness, leading to a higher quality of life. Private and Semi-Private Lessons Learn at your own pace! Set a time to meet with our instructor and get those swimming lessons that you’ve always wanted. Register at the SRC front counter and our SRC Aquatics staff will contact you to arrange for your private lessons. Private lessons are 30-minute one-on-one sessions scheduled on a first-come-first-serve basis. You may add a second person to create a semi-private lesson. AMERICAN RED CROSS LIFEGUARDING Through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, you’ll learn teamwork, rescue and surveillance skills, First Aid and CPR/AED and other skills you need to work as a professional lifeguard. Successful completion results in a 2-year certification in Lifeguarding that includes first aid, professional-level CPR and AED in one certificate. Participants will need a bathing suit for all meetings. Note: Must attend all dates. Prerequisites: 1. All participants will need to swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. 2. Tread water for two minutes only using your legs. 3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds. • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 – 10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object. • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object while keeping your face at or near the surface so you are able to get a breath. You should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water using a ladder or steps. If participants fail to demonstrate these prerequisites they will receive a refund for the full amount. CHILDREN’S SWIM LESSONS Thirty minutes, once a week for five (5) weeks. These lessons are for SRC member’s children of all abilities. Ropes
The Rock Join our adventure based, purposeful risk taking and cooperative team building community at The Rock – SRC South’s epic 32-foot-tall climbing wall and 12 ½ foot-tall bouldering area. If you’re a beginner, we’ll help you get started. If you’re an experienced climber, we’ll help you stay challenged. Each week, we change a section of The Rock’s routes/problems – that means a whole new Rock every month! Climb during open climbing hours, learn new skills at climbing clinics and win prizes at our quarterly climbing competitions. Most activities are free and we provide all the gear you need.
Intro to The Rock New to climbing or just want to learn? Take 15 minutes to learn the ins and outs of The Rock; how things work, clinic descriptions, and a brief tour of what we have to offer. Top Rope Belay Lesson Learn the basics of top rope belaying. April 5 - June 1 Tuesdays and Wednesday, 5:00pm - 6:00pm Free to SRC Members.
Intro to Lead Gym Climbing The first half of the lesson we’ll teach you safe and efficient lead belaying and climbing techniques, as well as clip protection. You will practice lead climbing with a top-rope backup. The second half of the lesson will get you on the “sharp end.” You will learn the process of a dynamic belay and experience lead climbing without a top-rope backup. You will practice taking and catching real lead falls and learn how to do it safely. A lead endorsement test will be required (by appointment only) at a later date (at least one week after) before you are endorsed to lead climb at The Rock. Be sure to register for the session in which you are available to attend both days. Session I April 13 & 20 Wednesdays, 1:00pm - 3:00pm SRC Members $20/session.

Sport Climbing Anchors
Intro to Traditional Climbing
Learn basic anchoring principles (required for single-pitch climbs). Also learn how to remove all your equipment and rappel to the ground safely.
Learn crack climbing techniques, how to tape your hands, basic gear requirements and descriptions. Must attend both days.

We accomplish this by creating a physically and emotionally safe environment in which individuals and teams are free to step outside of their comfort zone and take a risk. MOBILE ROCK WALL
The Mobile Rock Wall is a 25 foot climbing wall on a trailer with 5 auto belay routes. Once we arrive at your location, the set up of the wall should take 15 minutes.
