PROCESS TERMINOLOGY: LOCKSTITCH SEWING MACHINE
1. PRESSER FOOT (MACHINE FOOT): The presser foot holds the fabric in place while you sew. Pressure should be strong enough that the fabric does not slip. 2. REVERSE LEVER: When pushed down stitching is reversed, when released stitching will return to normal. 3. STITCH LENGTH DIAL: Numbers 0-5 indicate stitch length, 5 is the longest. When adjusting the stitch length, the dial is easier to turn if the reverse lever (2) is pushed down to the halfway position. 4. THREAD RETAINER: Passing the thread through this ensures the tension remains even when sewing. 5. TAKE UP LEVER: The machine thread must pass through the Take Up Lever to enable stitching. Ensure the lever is raised to its highest point when threading the needle. This will help prevent the thread from coming out of the needle when starting to sew. Š Karen Ferry and Rosemary White
6. NEEDLE PLATE: Sliding the needle plate out to the left will allow access to the bobbin case shaft. 7. BOBBIN WINDER: The bobbin is placed on the spindle when winding a bobbin. 8. MACHINE PULLY (WHEEL) :Rotating the wheel towards you will take the machine needle up or down. 9. PRESSURE SCREW: this adjusts the pressure of the machine foot on the needle plate and holds the fabric firmly in position while sewing. To much pressure will cause the feed teeth to damage the fabric. To little will make the fabric slip. Adjust by loosening or tighting the pressure screw. 10. TENSION GUIDE DISKS. It is essential that the machine thread is placed between the tension guide disks at this point. You will achieve a smooth and even stitch if the thread tension is correct.
