A guide to:
An overview of the agressive sport for newbies. By: Hailey Tucker Pro wrestling is one of the most popular forms of sports entertainment. Among all of the difficult tactics, the basics are the most essential in knowing what to do in your first real match. Being successful in wrestling is a direct result of your expertise in the fundamentals. It all starts with knowing the positions and creating strategies to perform on the mat. So, when joining your coach will most likely start out with a warm up, but don’t worry it probably won’t be too complex. Everyone knows that a match is won by a pin or fall, however it’s all a matter of what you do to get the win and have your hand raised by the ref. It’s essential to understand the basics such as a stance, level change, penetration step, takedown, reversal, etc. in order to discover new techniques and aspects that will help you win your first match. Finding your stance: Before a match begins, you can see the wrestlers standing in this staggered-like position. If done correctly, a stance can give you advantages in winning against the opponent because of how low you are to the ground. Staying in this position throughout most of your match shows you don’t get tired easily and makes you seem like you know what to do. Getting the takedown: From the neutral position in which you are both in a stance, one is usually able to take the other down to the mat. The takedown can be done with different strategies, however the most common are double-legs and single-legs; performed by the penetration step. Using these as your form of a takedown makes you look big and strong, especially if you drive/ lift them and bring them back down to the mat.
Knowing the basics The saying “you can’t win them all’ definitely applies for this sport because the opponent may be the one who takes you down first and gets you to a pin. Learning to get back into control after it’s been taken away from you not only gives you points for escaping but hopefully allows you to get back to where you started.
Reversing on the opponent: Quickly turning the tables by overpowering the opponent after being in a position of defense is a big eye-opener for a lot of people, sometimes even yourself. This is usually performed by a spin, escape or slide out. Doing this let’s everyone know that you aren’t a quitter and that you are able to retrieve your winning title. There are many components of wrestling but these are the basics to know before going to your first practice. Having an idea of what you are getting into is necessary and so is knowing what to do in your first match. If you want to show everyone how advanced you are already pay close attention to your coach and follow these simple positions. No need to feel intimidated, just get out there and “show them what you got!”

A GURLS PERSPECTIVE SMALL TALK WITH: DALIA BLOOMS
Being a female in a sport that people assume is “mostly for boys” isn’t always easy. You aren’t expected to accomplish the same as the male wrestlers simply because of your gender. However, we can change the way people percieve our abilities if we put in that extra effort and work hard. I wrestle males at tournaments and it can be rather challenging sometimes but winning out there and having fun helps you get noticed. It definiteley shows you gave it your all and thats what matters the most!
