Job Descriptions

One of my job descriptions as a business editor was to

organize and assist in the sales

of senior and business ads. I feel I worked very closely in organizing the funding, and keeping track of each of the senior ads and what size each parent had ordered. My main objective when looking through each senior ad as to see what size and how many pages would be needed in order to fit everyone in the yearbook. The other part of my job was to keep track of funds in order to see how much money the yearbook needed to raise in order to print. I kept a sheet that allowed me to keep track of every senior ad coming in, how much they paid, and the photos that were attached to the form. Looking back, one thing I could have done differently would have been creating a file online that kept track of each senior ad as soon as they purchased it, and compiled a list that showed the size of the ad. This would have made the process easier and more efficient than going through a huge binder of unorganized papers.

Descriptions

Another one of my job descriptions is to assist with all Magazine projects and UHSpress events. I feel like I have demonstrated this throughout the year, because I create all

business ads

the for the magazine, while organizing the funds in order to publish the magazine, and come up with a handful of fundraising projects for the club. When the club is in the process of creating a magazine it is my job to compile all the ads that were taken out, and see what size ad they paid for and how many extra pages we will need in order to fit all of them.

design

After I do this I their ad to be placed throughout the magazine and distribute the ads to each of the businesses once the magazine is completed. I have done this for both of our magazines and made sure that they were what the customer wanted to be shown to the consumers of our product. I have also demonstrated assisting with UHSpress events, by creating multiple flyers throughout the year to announce different events and products we have produced such as Ms. UHS, lip synced battle, senior ads, and magazine announcements. helped set up and plan events for our hall decorating that we did in October, set up the Tijuana fundraiser, and be present all days that we were selling the magazines and yearbooks. One thing that I could have done differently would have been to be present in class more often so that I could be more useful to not only the newspaper staff, but as well as the yearbook staff.

Job Description

Another part of my job description is to de-

.

velop and run marketing ad campaigns I feel that I have done this over the course of the year by marketing out advertisements to local businesses as well as distributing all businesses to the

newspaper staff

yearbook and in order to try and gain money for both clubs. At the beginning of the year I distributed all businesses who were left over after the previous distribution the previous year, and I as well went out and got advertisements of my own in order to word towards our set money goal to produce the magazine. Another thing I did to demonstrate my job

organized

description is I marketing campaigns such as the Tijuana fundraiser and tried running the Ms. UHS program by designing a theme, flyer, and signup sheet for students. Many marketing campaigns that I had set up the previous year had not worked out so well such as electric cars, popcorn sales, and car washes, so this year we decided to lean more into getting as many magazine ads in order to pay for the magazine and any other expenses along the way. One way in which I could have bettered our marketing campaigns would have been to design an app that students could download to keep informed with the school and the articles that were being published. I feel this would have tremendously helped our marketing campaign, because students could get notification on their phone about the latest articles, fundraisers, and things on sale for both yearbook and newspaper. Since, this is the technology era I feel that designing this app would be a great way to get our name out there as well as letting students have easy access and reminders at the tip of their fingers, and in return will market our products to the entire student body more efficiently.

As I began to slowly walk up the grassy aisle in my tear stained black dress, I placed flowers on the tombstone that had my grandmother’s name engraved on it and, I could think nothing more than, I wish I could say goodbye one last time. I remember the day so clearly when my mother and I received the news that my grandma had passed away from an aortic aneurism. At first I did not believe it, someone I just saw a couple weeks ago was now only a distant memory to me. I can recall all the times I was too embarrassed to give her a hug in front of my friends, or how I would get annoyed with the hour long phone calls she would have with me about life, or even decide to stay in my room instead of spending time with her when she visited. Now, after almost a year of her being gone I regret every day the instances where I neglected to give her the attention she deserved, and now after each day all I want to do is call her up on the phone and tell her how my day went and wait for her to give me an hour long speech about how proud she is of me. Since I was born the only people who really stayed in my life were my mother, aunt and grandma, and when she passed away it was like losing a huge piece of the puzzle and never being able to feel complete again. My grandma was the one person who was always there for me, and always gave me advice on boys, school, my mom, and everything in life, and I took her for granite.

I will never be able to go back in time and spend that extra hour watching television with her on the couch, or call her first and ask how her day was instead of her always calling me, or even giving her the biggest hug and kiss the second she arrived, because it is always the smallest things that count the most and I neglected to realize that. In life things happen so unexpectedly, and the last time I saw her was the morning she left and I was too lazy to get up and give her a kiss goodbye. Being the age that I was many people can say that we are self-absorbed, and I can confirm that in my case that is correct. I was too tired to get up and give a kiss goodbye to one of the only woman who has been there for me through everything, even my mistakes, and that is one thing I will always regret. The most important lesson that I learned from this was never take someone for granite, because you never know when they will be gone. Sadly, I had to learn this lesson the hard way, but I have become a better person because of it. My advice to everyone is to never let anything keep you from happiness, if you hold onto grudges and hatred it will only make your life miserable, and when something happens let it go, because the situation is only temporary but if you let the anger get the best of you it can become permanent.

My grandma taught me so many life lessons that have allowed me to become the person that I am today, and even though she will never be here physically to watch me graduate or to have watched my first soccer game back from my injury, or to watch me get married, deep down in my heart I know that she is watching me from Heaven and will be with me in spirit. There are many lessons that my grandma taught me over the years that have resonated with me ever since she passed away, one is to never fear failing, because in order to succeed you must fail and if you never take the chance than you can never grow as a person. In life we pave a road with every life decision that we make, and the choice is ours, but if you let barriers and obstacles keep you from making it to the finish line than you will never be able to see the beauty on the other side. Like the old saying goes, “after every thunder storm is a rainbow.” The most important and biggest lesson I had to learn the hard way is to never take someone for granite, but it took my grandmother passing away to also see all the other lessons she had taught me and to take each and every one of them to heart.

When I think about all the memories my grandmother and I had it makes me sad knowing that I never got to say goodbye, or share one last moment with her before she passed away, but I know that sometimes things happen for a reason, and maybe she had to pass away for me to realize all these life lessons. Now, I spend as much time with my family as I can and I make them the first priority in my life, because you never know what life has ahead for you or anyone else and if something ever were to happen to me I want each one of my family member to know that I loved them unconditionally. My grandma was one of the strongest and kindest people you will ever meet, she was selfless and did everything for everyone else without ever wanting anything in return, and her unique characteristics have inspired me to always want to become a better person each and every day. The death of my grandma has an everlasting impact on me, but I will take what she taught me and teach others as well. I cannot wait to walk across that stage on graduation day and look up to the sky and say, “Well grandma, we did it.” In the years that come I plan on teaching everyone the importance of never taking someone’s love and kindness for granite and hopefully becoming a better person myself and carrying on my grandma’s loving nature.

When looking back on these past three years being in newspaper, I can definitely say I have learned a lot of life lessons that I will take with me for the rest of my life. My past couple of years have been very hard for me in my personal life, but I am glad to have had a class like this where I am able to express myself and learn more about the business aspect of a club. This club has taught me so much about the business world and one day I want to open up a business of my own helping children with cerebral palsy and this club has allowed me to gain knowledge about business and apply it. I have also gained lifelong friends that I will take our memories with throughout my life, and I wanted to give you a special thanks, Mrs. Kohler, for never giving up on me, for always believing in me, and for being my friend who I can talk to about anything. You have helped me through so much in my personal life, and I do not know where I would be without your guidance. Thank you, for not only being one of the best teachers I have had, but for showing me the potential that I have in life. I will miss you a lot and promise to come back and visit.

Extra Credit I do not create any spreads for the magazine, but I do create all the ads that the businesses take out. I would have to say I am most proud of my first edition magazine ads, because I was able to create most of them from scratch and still designed them to look professionally done. I think my favorite part about designing ads is the final product, where you can see how far you came and see people buying what you created, it is a very satisfying feeling. I may not be able to write for the magazine, but I feel these business ads are a pure example of how the magazine is even able to be printed, because without the help of businesses such as DeLand Fish House and Hansen, we would not be able to have created either issues of our magazine. I learned many things on indesign this year such as creating spreads, like this one, using tools such as photoshop to help me cut out photos and put them in my spread, and use the formatting tools that are at the tip of my finger. At first using indesign was very challenging for me, but after creating each ad I was able to master this app and in college I know this will be a very useful tool for me when I have to create spreads or assignments that require copy. I am very greatful to the technology that has helped me become a better writer and better business manager.
